thank you for joining us today. >> major developments in the past few hours in the bombing attacks in new york and new jersey. the suspect now under arrest captured this morning in new jersey after a gun battle with police. >> you can see him here bloodied on a stretcher and investigators say he was discovered by a local bar owner who found him sleeping in the hallway and then called police. >> 28-year-old ahmad khan rahami, a suspect wanted for questioning in the bombings in new york and new jersey now in police custody after a shootout with police in linden, new

jersey. >> one of the officers was actually sitting in his police vehicle when he was shot at. i'm told the round went through the windshield and actually glanced off his forehead area. >> federal agents moving in, searching through rahami's home in elizabeth, new jersey. the same city where yet another explosion took place overnight. the bomb squad trying to diffuse one of five devices found in a back pack when it exploded. this while authorities say it was right near the vera zan no bridge where fbi agents stopped five men and detained them as they determined whether they were connected to the bombings. the explosion in manhattan and chaos happening on a balmy saturday night. law enforcement moving rapidly and piecing together this investigation. >> taken to quauntico for review, we work jointly with the nypd. >> investigators are closely analyzing this dumpster, twisted and mangled in the aftermath of

the explosion. from the det nation of a pipe bomb in seaside park to the chelsea explosion, they were able to track rahami from a cell phone attached to an undetonated pressure cooker discovered a few blocks from the chelsea bombing. >> the swift arrest of rahami happened hours after he was identified by law enforcement. >> jessica castro is at the live desk with evidence that was critical in identifying him. >> authorities say it was this key piece of surveillance video that helped them identify the 28-year-old and track him down. the video places rahami in the chelsea neighborhood of manhattan saturday night that injured 29 people. these images are surprisingly clear, showing him carrying a duffel bag along discovered with the few seconds of footage, they also recovered a cell phone, which tracked to rahami's father. early this morning, the fbi issued this wanted poster and

sent out cell phone alerts to residents in the area after he was spotted by a neighborhood bar owner in the linden new jersey area. police arrived there and got in a shootout with him. two officers were hurt but are expected to be okay. one shot in the vest and other in the patrol car. the shoot outhappened less than a 15 minute drive from where the pipe bombs were found last night. reporting from the live desk, jessica castro, abc 7 news. >> new york remains on heightened alert for terror as united nations general assembly is just beginning with leaders coming from around the world to manhattan and that means lots of extra security as first session happened this morning they are protecting more than 140 world leaders attending the general assembly. 1,000 additional state troopers and national guard members also post at the transit hubs and locations across new york city. we're seeing an increase

police presence in san francisco. >> oracle kicks off open world today. talking to attendees as they come into moscone center. >> reporter: there are examples of security everywhere here. some not as obvious as others. these cubes look decorative but they are filled with blocks of concrete so no one will be able to drive through here. this is one of a few example of security we have found here. bomb sniffing dogs swept through oracle world to prepare for the 60,000 attending this week. we saw chp officers and private security teams guarding the perimeter. attendees tell us security is not on their minds this week. >> i feel pretty safe here. i come last year also. it's pretty safe. >> reporter: san francisco police have added uniformed officers all over the city in response to the explosions on the east coast. with visitors here from as far

as london and xri lancaster ka, many told us they admire security in the u.s. and feel safe. >> take all of the necessary precautions and we have all of the confidence in the country. and we have been looking at u.s. as a role model for developing countries like us. >> you can live your life like that and be worried about it. coming from london we're fairly used to those kind of things. you have to get on with things really. >> san francisco police say they hope people will think about security and help them look for anything unusual. >> what they are counting on is the public not being aware of what they are doing and just simply ignoring them. so that's why we really emphasize if you see something, say something. because we want the public just to be a little extra vigilant. >> people here we talk to say they are willing to say something if they see something

minnesota. saturday night's attack in minnesota wounded nine people, all of them are now out of the hospital. an offduty police officer shot and killed the attacker. the suspect had worked in the past as a security guard at a store in the mall. he mentioned allah and asked one victim if he or she was muslim before stabbing them. >> new information about last week's freakish death of an elderly driver of 101 on the peninsula hit by a large metal nut or bolt kicked up by traffic. caltrans is coming forward to say the part fell off one of its trucks. matt keler is live with more on the developing news. >> reporter: it is unfortunately all too common here in the bay area but chp says it is actually rare for that to happen to a caltrans vehicle. new details emerged about the tragic incident that claimed the life of an 82-year-old. this object, a brass nut or bolt

about the size of a baseball crashed through lewis shaffer's windshield when he was driving north. it hit him in the neck and the van crashed along the center divider before it came to a stop. shaffer died at the scene. the chp says that object is from a caltrans water truck. the investigation revealed that truck was traveling southbound on 101 around the same time as the crash when it blew a tire. >> we now need to find out what it is that happened and how this piece came off the caltrans truck. and see if fz something that can be avoided in the future. >> chp investigateors are tryin to find out if the metal piece went into the windshield or if another vehicle's tire kicked it in the air. caltrans responded to the preliminary investigation report and released a statement. they say the truck was driving between job sites at the time of the incident. caltrans will continue to cooperate with chp as they

finish their investigation. caltrans offers its deepest condolences to mr. schaefer's family and friends. >> chp says they received phone calls from witnesses and are hoping for more. they also say they want dash cam video hoping somebody driving by has dash cam video to see the moments right before the impact. reporting live in palo alto, matt keller, abc 7 news. demolition work on a popular country store destroyed by fire in san mateo county. you are looking at the flames that gutted the store early yesterday morning. no one got hurt here. firefighters are still looking for what caused that fire. >> and we are heating up quickly on this monday morning. a live look outside from the mt. tam cam. you'll notice we have a haze in the atmosphere and have a spare the air day officially in effect on our monday, especially inland where we will have poor air quality. numbers right now are soaring quickly. we're at 75 in san francisco.

new details about a middle school teacher on the peninsula just pleaded not guilty to lewd acts with one of her former students. san bruno police found heather butz with a 15-year-old girl inside a parked car. investigators believe the two engaged in a relationship for several months, butt s taught english and drama and remains free on bail. marin deputies will be hitting the streets with a tool aimed at improving transparency. 85 deputies will be outfitted with body cameras like these used by san francisco police. the board of supervisors okayed

there's a new warning for parents, the american academy of pediatrics are urging doctors not to prescribe the pain medication codeine to children. the association says codeine can be ineffective and the risk of side effects are too large. codeine is commonly used in overthe counter could have syrups, some people metabolize it resulting in breathing problems and sometimes death.
