in minnesota, we are hearing from the family of the man accused of going on a stabbing spree in a mall. he attacked nine people before being shot and killed by an offduty police officer. investigators said he asked potential victims whether they were muslims. relatives are shocked that isis claims the 20-year-old was connected to the terror group. >> are you aware that isis is saying he was a soldier? >> no. ahmad rahami is refusing to answer questions or even give his name as investigators build the case against the afghan-born naturalized u.s. citizen. >> we have every reason to believe this was an act of terror. >> reporter: attending high school in new jersey, graduating in 2007, remembered as a clean cut kid, interested in sports and girls. >> ahmad had a girlfriend who became pregnant who was far along in her pregnancy at the prom. and i know they ended up giving birth to a baby girl. >> reporter: after a year at junior college, he worked at the family restaurant, first american fried chicken, in elizabeth, new jersey, and lived in the family's second floor apartment, which the fbi searched in 2011, and the family sued the city of elizabeth claiming discrimination against muslims because the city imposed a 10:00 closing time at the restaurant. >> we had some code enforcement problems and noise complaints.

>> reporter: there was other trouble. court records show rahami was accused in 2014 of stabbing a relative in the leg. but a grand jury failed to indict him. and u.s. officials tell abc news over the last few years, he traveled to afghanistan and pakistan, including almost a year in quetta, pakistan, from april 2013 and march 2014 telling authorities he had a wife in pakistan. >> if they spent more than a few days, it raises suspicion while there they will have been recruited by terrorist groups. >> reporter: friends say he was changed when he came home from afghanistan. but if his goal was to become a big time terrorist, rahami was a failure. he was caught planting the first bomb and saw him at the second location a short time later. even more revealing, the bomb that did not explode was connected to a cell phone which

the fbi was able, in only in a few hours, to track right back to rahami. so far, there's no indication of a large scale full-blown terror cell, but officials have other devices in the search of the home, and there remains open request whether there was accomplices that helped in some ways. the first charges filed against him by the union county prosecutor for attempted murder because of that shoot-out with police. brian ross, abc news, new york. we're learning new details about the other incident that took place over the weekend, the mass stabbing in minnesota. the fbi is now calling it as a potential act of terrorism. pierre thomas has the latest. >> reporter: the suspect was the fbi's worst nightmare, a lone wolf with no known ties to terror attacking the softest of targets, a shopping mall on a busy saturday evening.

we'll tell you what was said. and later, the ground breaking reality show starring five transgender models, it promises drama a, cattiness and covers the trials and tribulations of being both beautiful and transgender. it's tuesday, september 20th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. we start with the man accused of setting off bombs in new york and new jersey taken down in a shootout with the police. >> we're talking about ahmad rahami, who is now recovering from several gunshot wounds. he's being held on $5 million bail. police say he opened fire on them after he was found asleep in the doorway of a bar. >> rahami is a naturalized citizen from afghanistan. >> elizabeth has the latest on the scene from the shoot-out. good morning. >> good morning to you.

as you can see, that scene of the shoot-out still taped off and it is still considered a crime scene with investigators collecting evidence here. and with the fbi still investigating, we're told more charges are pending. the search for ahmad khan rahami ended at this new jersey bar with a gun fight that left the 28-year-old afghan native bloodied and these two linden officers wounded. but all three are now recovering from nonlife threatening injuries. >> oh, man, it was wild. >> the bar's owner found the suspect sleeping in the hallway and called police when an officer approached. >> within a matter of seconds, the suspect fired on him. he had his vest on and the -- and he was hit in his vest. but that saved him. >> rahami fled on foot with gun in hand and other officers in hot pursuit. >> you heard like pop, pop,.pop, pop, a lot of shots. >> he just heard people screaming. >> the injured rahami brought down by law enforcement, less than 48 hours after a bomb went off on this new jersey boardwalk

and this powerful blast that rocked a manhattan neighborhood. the next night, five pipe bombs were found at this new jersey train station as police try iedo disarm them, surveillance cameras spotted rahami planting the bomb in new york city friday night and later caught him at a second location where this unexploded bomb was recovered. rahami worked at his family restaurant, american fried chicken, beneath the family's second floor apartment. the fbi found more explosive devices when they searched the apartment. investigators are now looking into the suspect's background and his travel history, including his visit to afghanistan two years ago. to help zero in on a motive and to see if he truly acted alone. kendis and diane. >> elizabeth, thank you. and all the devices were discovered over two days in a 60-mile stretch from manhattan to the jersey shore. and investigators are still trying to figure out whether just one person was responsible.

former fbi special agent in charge and an abc contributor steve gomez is joining us on the phone. steve, authorities say they're confident this guy acted alone, but, you know, for some time, they were thinking there were other people that might have been involved. what are we learning right now about this case? >> well, you would think that there was somebody else involved because you're talking about four devices, four different locations, two states. that's pretty sophisticated. that's a lot of work that goes into it. so the idea that he's a lone wolf attacker, it's hard to believe, but that's the operating theory that they're going off of right now. but they are going to be digging into a lot of this guy's background. they're going to be talking to the family, friends, neighbors and so on. they are not going to leave any stone unturned because the bottom line is, you can't let somebody else be out there, whether they were helping him develop the devices that

exploded, whether they gave him some financial support or whatever it was. you've got to figure out if there was somebody else involved. >> steve, that's always a big question in cases like this. is there someone else involved? and the other one, of course, are there more devices. what goes into answering that? >> well, it looks like when they conducted the searches, they did find some other explosive items and devices and so on. so that's good they were able to find that. they're going to be doing other searchers, as well, i'm sure. they're going to try and canvas any location this guy had any contact with. so finding additional explosive material, that's going to be very important and, you know, a lot of that is going to start with the analysis that's being done on the devices that exploded as well as the ones that they were able to recover before they went off because the footprint of those devices and the material, they're going to trace them back to where he acquired it and that might lead to some additional clues. >> so you had this incident over the weekend. you had the stabbing in

minnesota that ended up injuring some ten people we're learning now. of course we had the 15th anniversary of 9/11. any idea that there might have been a timing issue with all of these attacks that took place? >> well, if you notice, you know, because i track this, you know, quite regularly. we talk quite a bit when an incident wliek this happened. and we haven't had an incident like this in a while, i mean, several weeks. and we were having one every week, you know, sometimes twice a week. so you almost wonder, was there a dry spell and then there was some kind of online communications that were going on from either isis or al qaeda. i mean, probably isis or just some kind of communication from somewhere to basically say, lay low for a while. because the world was getting hit, you know, every week. and now all of a sudden we have four devices, you've got the minnesota attack there which was gruesome.

member elizabeth warren. gas prices rising in the northeast because of shortages. many gas station ves run dry after a pipeline was shut down due to a leak. drivers are panicking and stocking up, increasing demand. the biggest increase in georgia, up 21 cents in the last week. a new study finds more than a third of children aged 4 to 7 are not properly restrained in car seats. of those children, 25% were in restrained by seat belts only. the rest had neither seat belts nor car seats. many put in booster seats too soon. parents can learn more on saturday during the national seat check. for details, check with your local police department. a suspected drunk driver in custody after hitting two pedestrians on the hollywood walk of fame, allegedly, and then smashed into a building, they say she tried to run, but was caught a short time later. the pedestrians are expected to be okay. the building hit is home to the museum of broken relationships.
