100-year-old tenant. good evening. >> thanks for joining us. the protest reached a new level when protesters tried to hang an anti-eviction banner. >> one fedup tenant pulled up the banner, ran off with, it and threw it off the side of the building. >> this is video you'll see only on abc7 news. abc has more on the latest twist in the ongoing battle. >> reporter: of course at the center of this is 100-year-old iris canada. this is not the first time that protesters targeted this building. we believe it's the first time tenant so fed up confronted demonstrators. >> we started hearing people on our roof. >> reporter: those people she's referring to were protesters who broke into an apartment building next door to gain access to her roof. hanging a 21-foot banner over the building, rights over her window. reached out and tore the bottom part of the banner.

her husband warned protesters they were trespassing. when they didn't comply, he climbed on to the roof, and with knife in hand, began cutting the cords that were holding up the banner. one of the demonstrators tried unsuccessfully to stop him. the tenant then ran and tossed the red banner off the top of the building. >> hell no, we won't go! >> reporter: outside, dozens came to demand that 100-year-old iris canada be allowed to stay in her apartment. >> we need to stand up to this kind of greed and make sure people can live in their homes as seniors and not be kicked out on to the streets. >> reporter: this began more than a decade ago when the building was purchased. because of her age, canada received a settlement granting her the right to stay there rest of her life as long as she paid $700 a month and actually lived there. >> he's the beneficiary of that life estate. >> reporter: the landlord who lives back east formed a tenancy in common with other people. he claims canada has really been

living in oakland with her great niece and asked that the lifetime estate be terminated. the court ruled in his favor. still, today we found her inside the apartment. the other owners of the six-unit building want to do a condo conversion and have been left in limbo. >> they have absolutely nothing to do with this lawsuit. and they have no control over it. and we're being harassed and targeted. >> reporter: canada's attorney continues to ask the courts for a stay. yet her time may be running out. in san francisco, abc news 7 news. housing advocates in oakland urged voters to approve two november ballot measures affecting renters. measure jj would require approval from the rent board for any rent hikes above inflation. the demonstrators also pushed for alameda county measure a1 which would raise $460 million to build rental housing. demonstrators say these measures would help prevent many people from being forced out of

oakland. delays on a major peninsula freeway because of a brush fire. sky 7 was over brisbane as firefighters doused a brush fire. the fire broke out on the slope between u.s. highway 101 and bayshore boulevard about 3:15 this afternoon. crews raced to the scene from across northern estimate county. they haven't said how many acres burned. still trying to assess that. the biggerimity pact has been on commuters heading south from the city. a san jose police officer appeared in court to answer accusations that he leaked information to vietnamese gang members. derek antonio faces six charges including unauthorized access to police data bases and being an accessory to a crime. antonio was arrested with 22 other people in a case linked to two homicides. antonio remains free on bail. symbols of hate on campus. two san jose state university students are waiting to find out their punishment after they confessed to being responsible for two separate swastika

displays. abc 7 has more live from the campus. chris? >> reporter: and sadly, allegations of racism aren't anything new on this campus. you might recall the case involving three white students who were expelled for bullying their black roommate. since then, a new president has been hired as well as a new kpeef diversity officer. some wonder, though, if the changes are enough. many students at san jose state university were stunned after two swastikas were found on display in two different residence halls. >> i can't imagine how they felt when they saw the swastikas. that is crazy. >> reporter: campus police announced this afternoon that two male students confessed to being responsible for the hateful acts but say the cases are unrelated. >> i don't want to go too much into motivation. i think it was characterized by both as a joke in essence. >> reporter: according to police, one student formed a swastika out of nametags at washburn hall on monday. another swastika was drawn on a white board at campus village on

tuesday. police say there was no physical damage to either building. >> you look at people people ask passing you don't know who they are obviously. everybody's not as friendly as they look. >> reporter: university president mary pap azian has ruled out expulsion for the students. >> we're outraged when anywhere in our neighboring communities, university, or anywhere we live or work has been targeted by something hateful. >> reporter: some are hopeful that others will learn from the experience. >> to me it's childish. like that's something you will see notebooks in middle school or something. >> things like this should not happen. things like it are not okay. when on campus or in the public, period. it shouldn't happen. >> reporter: papazian will meet with concerned students at a campus dining hall later tonight. in san jose, abc7 news. the family of a man shot and killed by police urged people to remain calm and peaceful following two nights of violent protests in charlotte, north carolina. north carolina's governor has

declared a state of emergency hoping to avoid scenes like this from last night. charlotte's mayor told abc news that a curfew is being considered. the violence is the result of tuesday's deadly shooting of keith lamont scott. officers claim scott refused orders to drop a gun. some residents say he was unarmed. let's look live at what's happening in charlotte where it is past 8:00 in the evening. the sun went down about an hour ago. people are again gathering in the streets for a third night of protests. everyone hoping this satellite will be much more calm and less -- this night will be much more calm and less violent than the previous two. several hundred people there. so far everything is calm in charlotte. members of the congressional black caucus demanded that attorney general loretta lynch open investigations into the recent deadly police shootings of unarmed african-americans. caucus members walked to justice department headquarters to present a letter to lynch urging her to prosecute officers involved in the shootings.

oakland democrat barbara lee joined the march. earlier the congresswoman spoke on the house floor describing what led to the deaths of several unarmed african-americans. >> you can get killed for going to buy a bag of skittles like trayvon martin, or you can get killed for riding on new year's day, for instance, in the subway in the bay area, like oscar grant. this is subway card. or maybe you can get killed for -- >> lee continued to say that americans should not live in fear of the police and said "enough is enough when it comes to deadly interactions with officers." starting today, all 800 police departments in california must start tracking any use of force that causes serious injury tlarch includes ever -- injury. that includes everything from a broken bone to a deadly shooting. data will be collected using an online tool called ersis. it was developed by the

california department of justice and san francisco based non-brofity bays impacts. -- profit bays impact. they say it will be the first statewide digital data set of its kind in the country. mike honda is filing a lawsuit against ro khanna that alleges internet espionage. we have more on the story. laura? >> reporter: the honda campaign told us today they found out about the breach in may, but they didn't reveal it or file their lawsuit until today. >> what you have here is a cyberattack. >> reporter: with november looming, congressman mike honda's re-election campaign is accusing rival ro khanna of computer fraud and cyberharassment of honda supporters. >> the documents and files in question were located in a private campaign drop box account. >> reporter: the allegations are included in a lawsuit filed by the honda campaign in federal

court, again: -- against khanna and his campaign manager. it includes screen shots of the digital signature as evidence that he's illegally accessing honda campaign data. including to the filing, he initially gained access to the donor list in 2012 when he worked as an intern for a consulting firm then employed by the honda campaign. >> and then he joined the khanna campaign in january, 2014. in the meantime, potentially thousands of supporters of the honda campaign have been harassed by getting emails from a person that would least expect and not welcome. that is mr. khanna himself. >> reporter: chance's team tells abc7 news, "the fact that mike honda went to the press before serving us tells you what this is really about -- politics." down in the polls, six weeks before an election, it's clear mike honda will do and say anything to hold on to his seat.

yahoo! is admitting that hackers stole account information from more than 500 million users. that is staggering. it is one of the largest

cybersecurity breaches ever. abc 7's william freedman joins us live from the newsroom. wayne, how cuesers find out if their -- how can users find out if their information was hacked? >> reporter: that is a moot question. yahoo! says that anyone using their site should assume that their information has already been stolen. we're talking names, e-mail addresses, birthdays, passwords, and security questions. >> if this is a canary in the coalmine, the coal mine is so full that no more can get in. every week there's a new breach or break. >> reporter: so says the forecaster so wary of internet security that he changes passwords for for every account and never provides his real birthday. paul safa was not surprised by yahoo!'s admission of the breach. he says if you think your information is safe you're living in a fantasy world. >> people shouldn't feel safe. for most part, it's their own fault. they create bad passwords, give

out too much information and are careless on line. >> reporter: you might as well be handing hackers the tools they'll use against you. >> reporter: the implications are that if someone gets into your yahoo! mail account, for example, if that is the account to which banks or other companies send passwords reset messages, it provides a stepping stone through which the hacker is able to get into the other accounts. yahoo! blames a state-sponsored actor, a fancy way of hay saiing hackers from another country acting out a vicious cyber cold war. >> this an information cold war. you and i are the collateral damage. >> reporter: and now so is yahoo!'s already damaged reputation. see the question is what can you do? clearly, change your passwords could make them stronger. and change the answers to your security questions. replace them with alternative passwords. those will help protect your security. >> okay. good tips. thank you very much. we sent out a push liter

"consumer reports" alerts us to some foods you never want to feed your dog.

theo, the family dog, was alone with their toddler and a bowl of grapes. later they noticed the grapes were missing. >> i think what he said was did you feed theo grapes. what did you say? >> yes. >> yes. she said yes. >> reprter: knowing that grapes can be toxic for dogs, they immediately rushed theo to the animal hospital. >> as most dog owners know, they'll eat anything. and there are some human foods that can cause serious health problems. >> reporter: the fda recently released information on people food that's can make dogs sick. here are a few years might not know about. onions, garlic, and chives, and any foods seasoned with them. it can damage a dog's red blood cells which can progress to anemia. macadamia nuts are toxic and can lead to vomiting, fever, and muscle weakness. fatty foods like fried chicken can inflame a dog's pancreas. and xylitol, a sweetener used in foods like gum can cause a

a suspect accused in a string of south bay bank robberies is in jail. police took 25-year-old spencer havens into custody at his san jose home without incident. investigators say he held up at least six banks in san jose, cupertino, and sunnyvale between july 19th and september 13th. researchers are saying that the year 2152 is when the gender pay gap will finally close. that means the rate the gap is narrowing, women will have to wait 136 years until they make as much money as men. that's according to a report by the american association of university women. women working full time in the u.s. are paid on average 20% less than men. in california, it's a little better than that. women make 11% less than men. it is a love song that probably won't strike your fancy. it is music to the ears of a type of fish swimming off our
