back to breaking news in charlotte, protests continued past the midnight curfew. >> people are protesting the police involved shooting of keith scott. the victim's family has now viewed video of that shooting and they say scott's hands were by his side and he were slowly walking backwards when he was shot. police say he was holding a gun and the police chief has so far refused demands that the video be made public. president obama is now weighing in on these violent protests. the president went one-on-one with abc's robin roberts. >> she asked about the growing tensions between protesters and police but how all americans can

bridge the racial divide. >> what we've seen recently in charlotte, north carolina, young people rising up, and showing their frustration in a different way. when you and the rest of the world see that, what goes through your mind? >> well, i think it's important to separate out the pervasive sense of frustration among a lot of african-americans that shootings of people in the sense that justice is not always, you know, colorblind. the way we change the system requires us to be able to reach out and engage the broader american community. and that requires being peaceful, that requires being thoughtful about what are the specific reforms you're looking for.

breaking news breaking news this morning on "world news now," another night of protests in charlotte, tense moments between demonstrators and police, but a peaceful night as the community searches for answers and the nation hopes for healing. we'll head live to charlotte with a full report in just a moment. and the white house is investigating after one of its staffers was hacked and sensitive information about the first family reportedly stolen via e-mail. we'll get the latest on that developing story. and new this hour, the latest on the hollywood star under investigation. >> what we found out about brad pitt in the middle of the increasingly bitter divorce and what authorities are looking into involving an incident with pitt and one of his children. and there's another hollywood heart throb who admits he's baffled over his hunk

status. the stunning admission that "50 shades of grey"'s jamie dornan thinks about what he looks like unshaven. the full story ahead in "the skinny" this friday, september 23rd. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> so christian grey doesn't think he's good looking? >> allegedly. >> okay. >> the ross unit is all over. >> we'll get into that in a second. good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. we're going to start with people who are clearing out of downtown charlotte after a night of mostly peaceful protests. this follows a midnight to 6:00 a.m. curfew imposed by the mayor after two nights of violent protests resulting in dozens of arrests and one death. >> the national guard arrived earlier in the day after the governor declared a state of emergency in the city. we are live in charlotte, and, heather, a different scene from what we saw last night, right?

>> reporter: yeah, diane, kendis, things are much calmer now. hundreds of protesters are still defying the order to maintain that city-wide curfew and they are continue to go march through the streets of uptown charlotte. they've been here for hours, at times laying down in the street. while demonstrations have remained largely peaceful, there's been tense moments. at one point, protesters blocked the interstate here outside of uptown. police deployed tear gas to get the crowd to disperse. charlotte meclenberg police say two of their officers were sprayed with some kind of chemical agent by civilians and were treated by emergency workers. no reports of any injuries to civilians. as you mentioned, more than 400 national guard troops are here on the ground assisting the police tonight. the city's mayor said the nightly curfew will remain in effect until that state of emergency is lifted.

meantime, the family of keith scott says they have seen the video of the police shooting, and there continues to be two very different sides to this story. police saying the suspect did have some kind of weapon, a gun, but the family says he was carrying a book, and this morning, they are not commenting on what they saw in the video. kendis, diane? >> so different tales completely, but where does the investigation go from here? >> reporter: well right now, we know the fbi and department of justice are here on the ground. they will be assisting with the investigation. and, you know, i wanted to let you know one of the reasons why protesters believe that tonight's protests were so calm is because there are leaders here. earlier tonight, the naacp held a gathering outside of the omni hotel where the protesters last night was shot ask killed. and down the road, we had people gather at a church for a prayer vigil to ray for peace. we should be learning in the next several hours what's planned for today and what the next step of the investigation

will be, but the police chief saying he is not going to release that police video. kendis, diane. >> despite the amount of pressure he's getting. thank you, heather, live for us from charlotte. as protesters came on the streets again, demanding release of the video, doesn't sound like the police chief is going to capitulate. >> yes. take a lisp to the protests. >> we want the tape! we want the tape! we want the tape sfwlrchlts! >> you can clearly hear they were chanting, "we want the tape" last night. we are joined by former special agent in charge, steve gomez. steve, the family has seen the tape. they want it released. can the public outcry finally force authorities to release that? >> well, they're going to force them to hurry up and release it. whether they're going to release it right away is another question. i think as we've seen in the last couple of days, the investigation that is ongoing is

clearly causing them to hold on to the tape. it's not as clear-cut as seen in other cases. what you have is they are going to hold on to it and see what's going on. there's probably complications with what the video shows and they probably realize that they're going to have to, you know, explain what the context of what the officer did was and what actually -- >> steve, is that all this is? is this a desire to give a full explanation when you do show the video or is there some way that showing the video could impede the investigation itself? >> i think we may have lost him. >> yeah. steve was there on a cell phone. we're going to try to get that connection -- >> are you guys there? >> yeah. steve? >> yeah, yeah, i can hear you. >> so, steve, i was just asking, is all this concern about not releasing the video, is it just for the sake of being able to offer a full explanation of when they do release it, or releasing this could impede the

investigation itself? >> absolutely. no, this is all about being able to offer a full explanation. and there's a complication that is clearly involved with this investigation based on the video. and, you know, most want -- if i was in charge of that kind of investigation, i would be saying let's hold on for a second. they are probably doing a lot of interviews. they are probably examining the officer's past conduct, had there been any complaints against the officer. those are all being taken into consideration in addition to what the video depicts, and what they are able to do forensically at the crime scene there or at the scene of the shooting. >> abc contributor and former fbi special agent in charge, steve gomez. steve, thanks for joining us. wore going to move on to politics. the first presidential debate of the general election season could shatter records with 100 million people expected to watch. hillary clinton is off the trail until monday night's showdown.

she's doing some intensive prep, including mock debates with a trump stand-in. both clinton and trump are each reviewing the other's past debates. trump said he's going to be himself and respectful and reportedly cleared his schedule for today for debate prep as well, but sources said he's not delved into policy or taken part in mock debates. watch the debate here on abc with our power house political team live monday night at 9:00 eastern. hopes for a truce in syria appear to have collapsed. more talks expected today, but kerry says constant violations of the cease-fire have hurt chances of a permanent deal. he called for russia and the government to make stronger commitments, and the comments came amid news they are restarting operations in aleppo 37 the bombing suspect, rahami, is hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

he is unconscious, and he's not been questioned so far. it may be some time before they can. meantime, rahami's wife has returned to the u.s. and a senior law enforcement official said she's been cooperative, quote, to a certain degree. the secret service investigating a possible cyber breach of what appeared to be a scanned copy of michelle obama's passport was posted online. it was a span of e-mails posted from a white house staffer. the image includes the passport photo and information page, most of which is already public information. yahoo! reports the biggest known hack of a single company's computer network ever. they said the account information of nearly 500 million users was stolen two years ago. yahoo! blames state sponsored hackers, but doesn't name the company. the company believes no payment card data or bank account information was stolen. word comes from cornell university, don't get wrapped up to reactions on posts on facebook.

the medina school district posted this sign announcing the staff may be armed and will use whatever force necessary to protect their students. many of the residents have no problem with the sign. the sign goes for pre-k through high school. the superintendent says the move was not prompted by any specific event. it was just the general environment nationally. and increasing fallout in the increasingly acrimonious divorce between brad pitt and angelina jolie. >> the fbi is looking into an incident involving pitt and at least one of his children on a private plane. here is matt gutman. >> reporter: sources telling abc news that the los angeles department of children and family services is investigating child abuse claims involving brad pitt. the news coming on the heals of the bombshell divorce filing from pitt's wife, angelina jolie, who in an 11-page filing requested sole physical custody of their children. sources tell abc news the investigation focuses on a shouting match he had with one

each other for a listeria scare. recalling ice cream for the second time in two years. those are just some of the top stories on this friday, september 23rd. from abc news, this is "world news now." good friday morning, everyone. we're starting this half hour with a curfew now in effect in charlotte. >> but protesters were still out on the streets. no violence at least so far, at least limited. demonstrators are now demanding the video of the deadly police shooting of keith scott be made public. the family has seen the video, but as far as the public, it's not going to be released any time soon. >> kim ryan is joining us from charlotte with the latest. jim? >> reporter: diane, kendis, for a third consecutive night, protesters take to the street in charlotte demanding answers for a police shooting, keith lamont scott. but this latest demonstration was cast against the backdrop of the governor's emergency declaration, and the hundreds of

national guard troops that it brought to bear. military vehicles and guardsmen in fatigues were posted in front of government buildings and office towers to prevent a repeat of wednesday's property damage. and it seemed to have an effect in holding down the violence. one protesters who was shot, apparently by another protester wednesday night died of his injury. justin carr 26 years old. later, the mayor imposed a 12 midnight to 6:00 a.m. curfew. they will study effectiveness of the action to decide whether it should be extended into the weekend. family members of keith lamont scott have now seen dash cam video of the shooting. the police chief says it shows the 43-year-old was holding a gun at the time, and that officer was justified in pulling the trigger. vincent, who like scott, is black, is on leave during the investigation. the family says the video is still inconclusive and insists scott had a book in his hand when shot to death. >> thanks to jim ryan there. abc in charlotte.

we want to get to this breaking news from tulsa. a police officer has turned himself in and posting bail after being charged with man slaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed man there. betty shelby could face four years to life in prison if she's convicteded in terence crutcher's death. prosecutors say officer shelby escalated last friday's confrontation with crutcher. he was not responding to commands, but he was walking away with hands up. and investigators are talking to a number of people about last weekends's bomb attacks in the new york city area, but they're unable to talk to the person at the top 06 their list. in fact, they may not ever be able to question the suspect. more from abc. >> reporter: as authorities hunt for possible accomplices, new footage of the moment that bomb blast rookd manhattan's chelsea neighborhood. but authorities are still unable to question the ski suspect. sources tell abc news ahmad

rahami is unconscious and in the hospital after being shot seven times in the shoot-out with police and that he may not survive. late wednesday his wife returned from dubai to be questioned by the fbi, and officials says she's been cooperative, quote, to a certain degree. the suspect's father speaking about his daughter-in-law. asia bibi, is she coming back to the home today? >> no. >> reporter: as authorities continue to retrace rahami's steps, abc news learned he visited this virginia gun shop in july with several other people when he purchased the gun used in that shoot-out with police and that he visited this hair salon the day before the bombing, giving someone a high five. we're told investigators are honing in on a three-hour gap between when rahami was spotted on surveillance video here in chelsea and with his car was seen leaving manhattan. abc news, new york. wells fargo is not out of the woods yet.

effect, but hundreds of protesters continue to ignore the order as they march in the streets of uptown charlotte. >> no justice -- >> no peace. >> reporter: for a third straight night, protesters took to the streets of charlotte, a heavy police presence backed up by more than 400 national guard troops didn't detemperature crowds from demonstrating against the fatal police sheeting of keith lamont scott, a 43-year-old black man. scott was shot by a black officer, brantley vincent. police say scott refused to drop a handgun. some witnesses say scott had no gun. others say he held a book. thursday, authorities allowed scott's family their first look at videos of the incident. in a statement, their lawyer said after watching the videos, the family again has more

questions than answers. when he was shot and killed, mr. scott's hands were by his side and he was slowly walking backwards. police say they will not make the videos public until the investigation is over. >> this family does not agree with rioting or incident individuals being injured or killed. on wednesday, demonstrations and with bedlam as angry crowds clashed with police. tear gas and flash grenades were not enough to keep protests, some masking their faces, from smashing windows and blocking roads. this man was shot, police say not by them. he later died. and at one point, protesters blocked part of the interstate just outside of uptown. police had to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowds. the city's mayor says thor curfew will remain in effect until the state of emergency is lifted the.

>> a very popular area in charlotte. that was the scene of a lot of violence last night. things are a lot more calm this night. any issues so far? >> well, charlotte meclanburg police say two of their officers were sprayed with some kind of chemical agent by civilians. they were treated by emergency workers. we have not heard reports of any civilians being injured. police continue to monitor the situation from about 1200 cameras placed throughout the city. >> heather, what do we know about where things progress from the investigation here? >> protesters are still very angry. they say they will continue to demonstrate. they're still calling or the release of that police video footage. the police chief saying he will not be releasing that video. we know the fbi and the department of justice are here on the ground investigating and tonight the family still calling for calm. kendis, diane. >> heather live in charlotte, thank you.

and breaking news in tulsa, a police officer turning herself in in the shooting death of an unarmed black man. prosecutors say officer betty shelby acted unreasonably when she shot terence crutcher last friday. police video shows crutcher with his hands up during most of the encounter. the district attorney praising the police department's reaction. he called on residents to remain peaceful. >> it is the shared responsibility of all who have the ability to control their reactions to do just that. >> crutcher's funeral is scheduled for tomorrow night. in the meantime, shelby posted bond after turning herself in. she faced four years to life in prison if convicted. a judge is actually going to decide if the case goes to trial. police in western maryland say officers there were justified in pepper spraying a 15-year-old girl. two officers are trying to get that handcuffed teen into their cruiser. she's sprayed after refuse to go

put her feet inside. she was cuffed after kicking and cursing at the officers. the girl allegedly had ridden her back through a red light and hit a car. hillary clinton reached out to the mayor of charlotte to discuss the unrest and not to be undone, trump tweeted last night that he spoke with north carolina's governor and trump is also clarifying his position on the expanding the use of stop and frisk. tom llamas is on the campaign trail. >> reporter: with the issue of race red hot, donald trump keeping praise on police but also offered this. >> we must do everything we can to ensure that they are properly trained, that they respect all members of the public, and that any wrongdoing is always and it will be by them, vigorously addressed. >> reporter: but then while speaking about the protesters in charlotte, this off prompter

>> i would say in the united states. >> and what would you do? >> try to prevent him from destroying the united states. >> abc news, chester township, pennsylvania. police are looking for a motive in an apparent double murder-suicide at an east tennessee factory. the bodies of three workers, two men and a woman were found inside the thomasin betts corporation. all three of them were shot and the local area schools were put on lockdown for the investigation. investigators still haven't been able to question the man charged with placing bombs in new york and new jersey last weekend. ahmad rahami is in the hospital and in creditical but stable condition. meanwhile, rahami's wife has returned to the u.s. from dubai and severe storms in utah, a has been questioned. twister caught on camera. you can see it's twirling behind that verizon store there. there were some injuries. large trees downed and loss of power. there were strong winds and heavy hail.

>> what we've seen recently in charlotte, north carolina, young people rising up, and showing their frustration in a different way. when you and the rest of the world see that, what goes through your mind? >> well, i think it's important to separate out the pervasive sense of frustration among a lot of african-americans that shootings of people in the sense that justice is not always, you know, colorblind. the way we change the system requires us to be able to reach out and engage the broader american community. and that requires being peaceful, that requires being thoughtful about what are the specific reforms you're looking for. the overwhelming majority of

breaking news breaking news this morning breaking news this morning on "world news now," another night of protests in charlotte, tense moments between demonstrators and police, but a peaceful night as the community searches for answers and the nation hopes for healing. we'll head live to charlotte with a full report in just a moment. and the white house is investigating after one of its staffers was hacked and sensitive information about the first family reportedly stolen via e-mail. we'll get the latest on that developing story. and new this hour, the latest on the hollywood star under investigation. >> what we found out about brad pitt in the middle of the increasingly bitter divorce and what authorities are looking into involving an incident with pitt and one of his children. and there's another hollywood heart throb who admits he's baffled over his hunk status. the stunning admission that "50

shades of grey"'s jamie dornan thinks about what he looks like unshaven. the full story ahead in "the skinny" this friday, september 23rd. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> so christian grey doesn't think he's good looking? >> allegedly. >> okay. >> the ross unit is all over it. >> we'll get into that in a second. good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. we're going to start with people who are clearing out of downtown charlotte after a night of mostly peaceful protests. this follows a midnight to 6:00 a.m. curfew imposed by the mayor after two nights of violent protests resulting in dozens of arrests and one death. >> the national guard arrived earlier in the day after the governor declared a state of emergency in the city.

we are live in charlotte, and, heather, a different scene from what we saw last night, right? >> reporter: yeah, diane, kendis, things are much calmer now. hundreds of protesters are still defying the order to maintain that city-wide curfew and they are continue to go march through the streets of uptown charlotte. they've been here for hours, at times laying down in the street. while demonstrations have remained largely peaceful, there's been tense moments. at one point, protesters blocked the interstate here outside of uptown. police deployed tear gas to get the crowd to disperse. charlotte meclenberg police say two of their officers were sprayed with some kind of chemical agent by civilians and were treated by emergency workers. no reports of any injuries to civilians. as you mentioned, more than 400 national guard troops are here on the ground assisting the police tonight. the city's mayor said the nightly curfew will remain in effect until that state of emergency is lifted. meantime, the family of keith scott says they have seen the video of the police shooting,

and there continues to be two very different sides to this story. police saying the suspect did have some kind of weapon, a gun, but the family says he was carrying a book, and this morning, they are not commenting on what they saw in the video. kendis, diane? >> so different tales completely, but where does the investigation go from here? >> reporter: well right now, we know the fbi and department of justice are here on the ground. they will be assisting with the investigation. and, you know, i wanted to let you know one of the reasons why protesters believe that tonight's protests were so calm is because there are leaders here. earlier tonight, the naacp held a gathering outside of the omni hotel where the protesters last night was shot ask killed. and down the road, we had people gather at a church for a prayer vigil to ray for peace. we should be learning in the next several hours what's planned for today and what the next step of the investigation will be, but the police chief

saying he is not going to release that police video. kendis, diane. >> despite the amount of pressure he's getting. thank you, heather, live for us from charlotte. as protesters came on the streets again, demanding release of the video, doesn't sound like the police chief is going to capitulate. >> yes. take a listen to the protests. >> we want the tape! we want the tape! we want the tape! >> you can clearly hear they were chanting, "we want the tape" last night. we are joined by former special agent in charge, steve gomez. steve, the family has seen the tape. they want it released. can the public outcry finally force authorities to release that? >> well, they're going to force them to hurry up and release it. whether they're going to release it right away is another question. i think as we've seen in the last couple of days, the investigation that is ongoing is clearly causing them to hold on to the tape. it's not as clear-cut as seen in other cases.

what you have is they are going to hold on to it and see what's going on. there's probably complications with what the video shows and they probably realize that they're going to have to, you know, explain what the context of what the officer did was and what actually -- >> steve, is that all this is? is this a desire to give a full explanation when you do show the video or is there some way that showing the video could impede the investigation itself? >> i think we may have lost him. >> yeah. steve was there on a cell phone. we're going to try to get that connection -- >> are you guys there? >> yeah. steve? >> yeah, yeah, i can hear you. >> so, steve, i was just asking, is all this concern about not releasing the video, is it just for the sake of being able to offer a full explanation of when they do release it, or releasing this could impede the

investigation itself? >> absolutely. no, this is all about being able to offer a full explanation. and there's a complication that is clearly involved with this investigation based on the video. and, you know, most want -- if i was in charge of that kind of investigation, i would be saying let's hold on for a second. they are probably doing a lot of interviews. they are probably examining the officer's past conduct, had there been any complaints against the officer. those are all being taken into consideration in addition to what the video depicts, and what they are able to do forensically at the crime scene there or at the scene of the shooting. >> abc contributor and former fbi special agent in charge, steve gomez. steve, thanks for joining us. wore going to move on to politics. the first presidential debate of the general election season could shatter records with 100 million people expected to watch. hillary clinton is off the trail until monday night's showdown. she's doing some intensive prep,

including mock debates with a trump stand-in. both clinton and trump are each reviewing the other's past debates. trump said he's going to be himself and respectful and reportedly cleared his schedule for today for debate prep as well, but sources said he's not delved into policy or taken part in mock debates. watch the debate here on abc with our power house political team live monday night at 9:00 eastern. hopes for a truce in syria appear to have collapsed. more talks expected today, but kerry says constant violations of the cease-fire have hurt chances of a permanent deal. he called for russia and the syrian government to make stronger commitments, and the comments came amid news they are restarting operations in aleppo. the bombing suspect, rahami, is hospitalized in critical but stable condition. he is unconscious, and he's not been questioned so far. it may be some time before they can.

meantime, rahami's wife has returned to the u.s. and a senior law enforcement official said she's been cooperative, quote, to a certain degree. the secret service investigating a possible cyber breach of what appeared to be a scanned copy of michelle obama's passport was posted online. it was a span of e-mails posted from a white house staffer. the image includes the passport photo and information page, most of which is already public information. yahoo! reports the biggest known hack of a single company's computer network ever. they said the account information of nearly 500 million users was stolen two years ago. yahoo! blames state sponsored hackers, but doesn't name the company. the company believes no payment card data or bank account information was stolen. word comes from cornell university, don't get wrapped up to reactions on posts on facebook. researchers looked at how people react to the feedback on social network.
