sawmill fire started east of cloverdale yesterday morning and forced dozens to evacuate. abc's news reporter amy hollyfield joins us with an update on the firefight. >> reporter: they are feeling good. you can see behind me the road is closed. they are thinking it will be open soon. they immediate good progress overnight. it is really hot out here but not windy like it was yesterday. this blackened hillside gives a glimpse into where this fire burned when it really took off. just how rugged and remote this area is. but this morning the area has a light layer of smoke hovering over it but no visible flames. >> we feel fairly confident we've got the upper hand now that we've had a couple hours of daylight. >> we drove 10 miles down geyser road toward the fire area. it is a one-lane windy, rural road. we saw two homes along this

stretch far apart from each other. firefighters say they have evacuate add total of 36 homes, some of them vacation homes and hunting cabins. they think those people will be allowed to return soon. >> shouldn't be as long as we've seen in other incidents where today should be, you know, later this evening and possibly tomorrow. but it's a high priority today for us. >> they brought in fresh teams of firefighters this morning to watch over this known as the sawmill fire. the fire hasn't damaged any buildings. firefighters are working to dig out containment lines. they expect to be in mop up phase pretty soon. >> if all goes as it is going now, it will wind down fairly quickly. >> one firefighter was hurt. the injury so minor the spokesperson doesn't even know the details behind it. so the person did not have to go to the hospital. the fire is not growing.

it's still at 1500 acres and 20% contained. reporting live from cloverdale, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. he was high on drugs and speeding away from police when he struck and killed a 14-year-old boy crossing the street in san leandro. today that driver finds out the price he'll have to pay. abc news reporter live in pleasanton. matt. >> reporter: reggie, what an emotional hearing inside the courtroom. almost everyone inside was crying during the sentencing hearing including the man accused of killing 14-year-old ivan cruz. video an hour and a half ago, "sunny anderson family. cameras were not not allowed but i watched as he's seen here 30 to life for second degree murder and several other felony charges related to that crime spree in san leandro november 11, 2014.

while fleeing from police he hit and killed cruz in his car. he was in san leandro on a scooter. he's described as a lifelong criminal, now he'll spend most of his life, if not all of his life, behind bars. reporting live, matt keller, abc 7 news. thank you. one person died, two others in the hospital after chain reaction on interstate 80 near sacramento. two cars and tomato truck involved in the accident around 4:00 this morning. chp says the couple, a man and woman, thrown from the causeway. the man died, woman in critical condition and third man with injuries. the chain reaction after the couple's car stalled in the middle of the highway. >> now to your voice, your vote. hillary clinton and donald trump are just hours from the first presidential debate which is expected to draw a super bowl-sized audience. abc's stephanie ramos on hofstra university on long island with

employees. two wells fargo have filed lawsuits against san francisco-based bank. wells fargo must pay a fine of $180 million for opening accounts without customer consent reportedly to satisfy sales goals. tributes roll in for the king of golf arnold palmer. he died yesterday at 87. palmer's agent said he died of complications from heart problems in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. palmer won 62 titles on the pga tour, the fifth of all-time. president obama posted this photo and said, "with his homemade swing and home spun charm, arnold palmer had swagger before we had a name for it. miami marlins are going to resume playing baseball one day after their beloved pitcher jose fernandez died. he was one of three people killed in a boating accident early yesterday morning off of miami beach. investigators say they do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in this. fernandez was scheduled to start tonight. he was a two-time all-star and just 24 years old. kristen, you're a big baseball

a shooting spree near a texas strip mall in injuries nine people and now the shooter is dead. clues to a motive. what do we know about this man? >> right now police are not identifying the person, they are only saying he's a houston attorney. meanwhile they have matched the suspect's vehicle as belonging to a lawyer by the name nathan desai. bullets at an apartment complex. >> bullets passed my face. you could hear them. >> shots from the direction. >> literally i could hear bullets going through my window. >> a shooter only identified as a disgruntled lawyer fired at random at morning commuters, 6:30 as people leaving for work

or school. >> and we had an active shooter engaging people in their vehicles. >> nine people injured, six of those hospitalized. of those, at least one said to be in critical condition. >> shooter engaged by pd, neutralized. >> police shot and killed the gunman a half hour after the shooting spree began. police say the gun mabz lived in the neighborhood. bomb squad found numerous weapons in the suspect's car abandoned near the crime scene. it forced nearby residents to shelter in place for hours. our houston abc affiliate is located in the area. a photojournalist was an eyewitness to the shoot-out. >> the shots were coming almost nonstop. four, five, six at a time. sounded like a pretty high-powered weapon. >> the shooter reportedly had a rifle and handgun he was using, but police found many more weapons and ammo inside his vehicle. the fbi is now involved in the case. police are not calling it an

active terrorism case but have also not ruled it out. in the studio i'm jessica castro, abc 7 news. what a why would story. police say the suspect in the seattle shooting has confessed to the attack. he went to the mall in burlington, washington initially without a gun. then he went back to his car, grabbed a rifle from the trunk and went into the macy's and started shooting killing five people. the suspect reportedly told police he had a fight with his father earlier. today stanford is distributing free pike helmets for the freshman class thanks to parents. one of the donors suffers from brain trauma from a hike accident. he and his wife hope wearing helmets on campus will be the norm for students who say i don't have time to put it on,
