100 acres burned so far at the area of loma chiquita road. we can tell you that this fire broke out at 2:45 this afternoon, about 50 minutes ago. it's on the border of santa clara and santa cruz county. no injuries reported however six homes are threatened and sky 7 is live over the flames as well as the thick smoke. we can tell you that cal fire says that it's rapidly spreading. they are adding resources out there. it's a very hot day in the santa cruz mountains. we'll keep you posted on the story situation south of highway 17 is the area. you might want to avoid it right now because this is off of summit road. if you don't have to drive in that vicinity, please don't do so. we'll continue to follow with the acb 7 news app and at 4:00 today. stay tuned.

and that breaking news is happening right now in the santa cruz mountains. take a look at this. a live picture from sky 7 of a wildfire that's burning in rugged terrain southeast of highway 17 and lexington reservoir. >> the exact location is just off of loma prieta and chiquita road. cal fire is telling us they have dispatched six air tankers to the area which shows you how seriously they are taking this thing. now we're told that the fire began as a structure fire and has burned between 75 and 100 acres already. at least six homes are threatened. we have seen one recreational vehicle and one out building on fire. >> yeah. this is a sparsely populated area that has seen wildfires before. very rugged terrain. one blaze, the so-called summit fire, destroyed 30 homes back in may of 2008. >> and we do have one of our --

we're taking a look at the flames that are just raging right there as you see as sky 7 pushes in, and the flames that are coming off of this obviously it is so hot outside today. >> yeah. >> it's been so dry, firefighters have a lot on their plates right now, and they are going to have a tough time putting out this fire. >> again, this has been -- the six homes that we know of are threatened in this very rugged terrain. weather conditions are a little bit challenging as ama just said. it's burned between 75 and maybe 100 acres already, but it is still spreading as you look at live pictures from sky 7. several air tankers are being dispatched to deal with this because given the nature of the terrain it's going to take ground forces some time for those firefighters to get in there on those fire lines so they are going to attack very heavily from the air. just look at the amount of smoke coming off this blaze. >> as we mentioned, a recreational vehicle and an out building are on fire. that's what we know of at this point, but this is going to be a bad blaze for fire fighters to try to get a handle on.

and, of course, going through santa cruz, highway 17, it gets backed up anyway as you -- with traffic and the commute on a monday, and you'll the smoke that this fire is putting off, it is going to be a rough commute for people driving home through that area. >> that's right. again, we're going to keep on this because there is some real concern that this is going to continue to spread. ian babcock is on the phone. he lives in that area and is also one of our terrific photographers. ian, you on with us. can you hear me? >> i am, dan. >> thanks for coming on, ian. appreciate it and know you have a lot of work to do there as well. neighbors concerned understandably. >> been getting a lot of calls from friends and family, and we haven't seen a fire in this area of this magnitude for a long time. it's bringing up some pretty shaky memories of some larger fires. we had one in the bonnie dune area years back. it always seems too familiar, dan. >> yeah. it looks like it. there was the summit fire that

sky 7. >> they look like they are 20, 30 feet in the air. >> we've said this is rugged terrain and can see that from sky 7. give us a little more information if you can about what type of terrain this is and how difficult it will be for firefighters to reach. >> well, this is up off of summit road up there, you know, right at the top of the santa cruz mountains. summit road kind of runs the length of the mountains there, right, and you're literally in between the two counties, santa cruz county and santa clara county and looking east it's burning just to the east side of summit road, and that's pretty steep terrain and goes off the east side of the santa cruz mountains. that's real steep and why it's probably burning so fast and carrying so well. >> yeah, man, just look at that plume of smoke coming off of this fire that's just raging at this point in the santa cruz mountains. look at the flames and the smoke. >> they said about 100 acres. >> 75 to 100 and at this point it's still going pretty strong. you can just see the flames and residents obviously concerned,

especially with the heat that we've seen over the past couple of days. it has been so hot outside. >> ian, if you're still with us, can you tell us a little bit more about the towers on the top of that mountain. do you know what it looks like? cell phone repeaters? >> a lot of repeaters up there. there's abc 7 news as well, a photographer. we shoot our signals up there to get them to san francisco, so there's a lot of equipment up on that peak. >> and the flames right now are very close to some of those towers. it looks like the cell phone repeaters, the flames are within a few yards. >> i'm sure they have got that area pretty meed down. talked about this defensible space. i would hope that they have got a good defensible space up there before they get to all the towers. >> yeah, and we do have our transmission equipment that is up there so we do have that. and ian, we're going to kind of keep you on standby for a little bit because you're great at being our eyes and ears up there but we have stephanie stooler up

there from the santa clara county fire department. stephanie, what can you tell us about this fire that's broken out. >> i don't have a lot of information. i'm actually driving out to morgan hill to help cal fire in their headquarters to get information out. santa clara county fire has sent out two type three land rates which is a smaller version. fire engines that you see day to day and a type six which is an even smaller version which can get on to tough terrain. we've also sent a water tender out, so that's all the information i have as of right now, but as i said, i'm currently driving out to morgan hill. >> stephanie, we appreciate you taking a minute. while we have you, just give us a thumbnail sketch of the priorities in a situation like this. what are jobs one, two and three? >> well, like i said, i don't have too much information. as far as i know -- l when you deal a fire of in
