firefighters all-around the bay area as a massive fire in the santa cruz mountains grew even bigger. >> dan: dangerous grassfires broke out in novato and the east bay and in petaluma a fire jumped from house to house. more than a dozen homes hit. i'm dan ashley. >> ama: i'm ama daetz. the fire left several people homeless. it started as a grassfire near stewart drive and a gust changed everything. home after home was damaged as the fire spread rapidly. >> dan: loins of the 101 were shutdown leading to massive traffic scrams. traffic jams. cornell bernard has more. >> reporter: family here are looking for a new place to live tonight. red cross are helping them. their homes are red tagged after a ferocious fire that began only feet away on highway 101 sent neighbors running. smoke and flames all around. a petaluma neighborhood on

fire. fire crews attacking the fire from all sides and making water drops from the air. >> the fire started getting bad again. they were dumbing more water and i was thinking, oh my gosh this is going to get worse. jay overhead sky 7 showed it did get worse spreading to 13 homes. firefighters say it began as a grassfire on nearby highway 101. hot, dry conditions fuelled the situation. >> the fire went into the trees and the winds started blowing it down the side of the freeway. >> it dropped hot embers on the homes below. homes damaged and now red tagged. >> it is on fire and you have to get out now. they went and they didn't grab anything. >> reporter: marcy lewis said her elderly in laws escaped their burning house in time. many things in the family home can be salvaged. bill was not as lucky. he returned home to this. >> there are things

salvageable, but it is pretty trashed. what the flames didn't get the smoke and water did. >> i feel so bad for these people. it makes you think. >> reporter: firefighters are investigating a cause and a spark from a passing car and even a lit cigarette possible culprits. in petaluma, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> ama: in novato investigators say a 14-year-old boy playing with matches started a grassfire that destroyed a home. it happened just after 6:00. it sparked power lines in brush. the fire is 75% contained and police cited the boy. >> ama: a grassfire blackened the grounds in allah me tau county -- alameda county. no one was hurt. >> dan: a large fire in the santa cruz mountains is growing even as firefighters make some progress. the loma fire has burned more than 2200 acres and is now 10%

contained. one home and six other structures have been destroyed. another 300 homes are threatened and have been evacuatd. abc7 news reporter is in the fire zone tonight and she joins us live with up to the minute information. katie? >> reporter: dan, evacuees out here feel very strongly that more than one home is or will be destroyed by the time all is said and done. i talked with a man out here who lost his home. he said he and his wife just retired. they lived there more than 50 years. meanwhile, others are still waiting to learn the fate of their homes. they just moved into their house in the hills two months ago. they weren't home when the loma fire erupted and they were not allowed to go home which lead to a frantic call to a new neighbor. >> he takes off down the hill and up the road to the fire to get -- - i am getting chills. it is to get my dog and cat. >> reporter: danielle is grateful to have her pets safe and sound and has no idea about her house. >> i don't know if it is still standing or if it will be

covered in retardant or if i can ever get back up there, if i well get up there and it will be a black hole m.. >> under half mile so we're close. >> reporter: bill powell's home survived the fire so far, but helicopters opting through the smoky sky above remind him he is not out of the woods. >> on the other side of the ridge is where the fire is at. we're hoping it doesn't come over the ridge. >> reporter: they have evacuated their home. it is one of 300 houses cal fire says are threatened by the fire. the estimated containment date is october 3rd. >> a weather pattern changing and the days will be cooler. we are hoping that coupled with the amount of resources will be able to make an aggressive threat against this fire. >> families and neighbors cling to each other in a positive attitude. >> making sure my kids are okay and grandchildren. the rest is wood, nails and

wire. >> reporter: mandatory evacuation orders are in effect. centers have been set up in three places. santa cruz county fairgrounds and the jewish community center of silicon valley and morgan hill presbyterian church. live at the loma fire in santa clara county, abc7 news. >> dan: a ups driver shot video of the fire as it started. he said hearing the burning trees pop was scary. after about 9 minutes it quickly expanded. >> ama: abc7 news was at the graham hill show grounds in santa cruz county where some four-legged evacuees are being sheltered. an organization helped them escape the flames. the group moved about 500 horses. >> i think i got three hours of sleep and it was interrupted by phone call after phone call. it is a complete labor of love. >> space is limited so horses and other animals like these

alpacas are being held throughout santa cruz county. >> ama: let's look at the weather conditions with sandhya patel. sandhya? >> sandhya: yeah, ama, we are tracking an increase in the fog. take a look at the fog right now. it is around santa cruz and the cooler air, not the fog, but the cooler air, the wind direction is pushing toward that fire. so on the fire lines relative humidity has come up. near the fire 25% humidity. the winds are calm and should remain light under testimony miles an hour over the next 24 hours. the temperatures will dop of drop and you will notice the cooling trend that will help the firefighters. the health department is warning the smoke from the loma fire will increase over the next few days. if you have respiratory issues take precaution. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast coming up. ama? >> ama: for breaking developments on the santa clara county wildfire enable

>> they said give it up. i reached in the pocket and gave him my wallet. he hit me in the head with the gun. carol thought if was a joke and was fighting to keep her purse when she was fighting to take her phone and photos and brown shot her twice. >> dan: the search continue for the suspects who may have followed them home from the grocery store. >> ama: developing news in san diego where there are angry protests where police shot a black man and we just learned he has died. it happened in el cajon near san diego. he was walking in traffic and acting erratically. he pulled something out of his pocket and took a shooting stance. one officer used a stun gun and another officer shot him. the item in the man's hand was not a weapon and he was not armed. witnesses say he was mentally challenged. a witness captured the shooting on a cell phone and voluntarily turned the cell

phone over to police. so far police have only released this single frame of that video. >> dan: a daly city man is accused of molesting three girls. he is said to have molested one in june and the other two over the past several years. he is being held on $9 million bail. >> ama: it took nine hours for the chp to clean up a fiery big rig crash that shutdown half of the san rafael bridge for most of the day. around around 8:00 it slammed into a guardrail and caught fire. it was carrying contaminated soil so they had to treat it carefully. the bridge reopened at 5:00 and nobody was hurt. neither knoll -- alcohol or drugs were involved. >> dan: and a special honor for a girl's act of bravery. >> it is scary to think about it.

feel the difference at least at the beaches. you can see the shallow fog layer returning this afternoon. the sea breeze came in. it didn't impact some areas. we are showing you the fog near the coast. it is not a solid layer along the entire coast, but we have enough that it is dense in half moon bay. a quarter mile visibility. look at these temperatures. down 19 degreeses in san francisco. hopefully you won't have a tough night sleeping because the cooler air is coming in. you will notice as we look across the bay, visibility is good. san francisco, 60 if oakland and 70 in half moon bay and mid50s. watching the fog over downtown san francisco and market street. you are heading into a cool morning. 54 in novato and 72 and still warm in livermore.

this is what you wellen -- will encounter with the morning commute. the cooling trend continues tomorrow. there is a possibility of showers. you can stay tuned on any of the changes coming up. i want to show you the morning commute planner tomorrow. if you are driving you could have dense fog. fair conditions. if you are walking it could be misty in spots. the hour by hour forecast, you are looking at the fog along the coast. the fog will creep in toward the east bay and there will be a few patches for the commute and for the afternoon. some of the fog will wipe away and way will see the sun, but not everyone will enjoy the sunshine. temperatures are ranging from santa rosa to the low 60s in antioch. the biggest thing you will notice is you will feel cooler tomorrow morning.

for the afternoon 60s at our beaches and 80s inland. you really have to go to lake port to get the 90s. we will see a significant drop into our inland valleys. if you are going to the giants game, breezy. temperatures in the mid50s and cool enough to warrant a sweatshirt. sunday there is a slight chance of rain. you will notice the green showing up at 5:00 p.m. heading into monday another round at 9:00, 10:00 at night and tuesday morning we are looking at the potential of showers. the reason it is not so clear computer models can't agree. one is wetter and one is dryer. keep you posted. the cooling will spread inland low 60s to low 90s. temperatures will drop into the 80s and we are down to the 70s for the upcoming weekend. well below average, ama and dan and a slight chance of showers means potential for needing umbrellas. >> dan: too scary to sell.
