protests overnight and raising questions after an officer opened fire on a man outside a strip mall just outside of san diego. abc's matt gutman is on the scene, has the latest on this ongoing investigation. good morning, matt. >> reporter: robin, good morning. police now saying that an african-american man who was shot right around here was unarmed when an officer shot him multiple times. now, the investigation is still ongoing, but police have released a single frame of cell phone taken by a bystander. police say it seems to show a man taking something out of his pocket and taking a threatening stance towards police. that shooting triggering near immediate protests here in el cajon at the police station down the street. hundreds of people shouting, no justice, no peace. police were originally called down here when people of the sister said he was erratically walking in and out of the

street. she allegedly warned them that he was mentally ill. that he was unarmed and that he needed their help. robin. >> that investigation just under way. thank you. we'll get the latest on last week's bombings in new york and new jersey. authorities released this new image as they still look for two men on the scene, and the bomber's father sat down with our chief investigative correspondent, brian ross. good morning, brian. >> good morning, george. the mystery deepens about the identities of those two men being sought by the fbi. if they were just innocent witnesses, why haven't they come forward? all this as the suspect's father gives his first full tv interview with surprising new details about his son and the fbi. >> reporter: it's been one week this morning since the fbi first went public looking for the two men. the new images show them with a colorful piece of luggage, they walked off with. apparently unaware that the pressure cooker they left behind was one of the homemade bombs. you don't know these men? >> no. >> they're not friends of your

son? >> never saw them. >> reporter: he tells abc news this morning he does not recognize the two men and is certain his son acted alone. you think he did this by himself? >> he did everything by himself. he buy everything by himself. he order and online. he did it by himself. >> reporter: in fact, the father believes that his 28-year-old son was up to no good for months before he allegedly planted his bombs in new york and new jersey. changing the locks on his bedroom door in the family apartment and keeping everyone out. nobody could go in there? >> nobody could go. one time my grandson, he went to his room and he's screaming and kick him out back. he's a little, 4 years old. >> what do you think? >> i'd say he did something wrong. >> reporter: but the father told abc news no one in the family had any idea that the increasingly secretive ahmad was preparing his alleged bomb attacks. but did anybody see him building the bomb? >> nothing, nothing, nobody. >> something suspicious going on in that bedroom? >> nobody, believe me. i guarantee. >> reporter: but federal agents

tell abc news, they are looking closely now at some of the radical social media posts shared by the suspect's older sister who he stayed with in pakistan. rahami was shocked when we showed him what was on his daughter's page. have you ever talked to her about any of this? >> no, this is the first time i saw that. >> reporter: the father also told abc news that one of the fbi agents present when his son was shot and captured last week was the same agent who two years earlier, had investigated his son as a possible terrorist, and concluded without interviewing ahmad that he was no terror threat. so you think they should have interviewed him? >> yes, a hundred percent and they never did. >> no. >> the fbi says the agent conducted a thorough investigation even after the father recanted his original claims about his son, something the father disputes. as for his son, the father says doctors have told him, ahmad is still in bad shape, suffering from what he called, massive infections after being shot, his prognosis still uncertain.

>> brian, at the start officials seemed pretty sure those men were not involved. now they're raising real questions. >> they don't understand why they haven't come forward. they have just disappeared. why haven't they come forward if they are innocent? >> brian ross, thanks very much. now we have the latest on the boat crash that killed miami marlins' pitcher, jose fernandez and two of his friends. police say fernandez was at a bar before the crash and text messages suggest he may have been upset about something. abc's steve osunsami has new details. steve, what do authorities think happened in those last hours? >> reporter: well, robin, investigators are still trying to piece together the chain of events that led to that tragic crash. they are not even sure yet at this point who was driving the boat, but it's becoming very clear that fernandez and his friends were out very late. authorities are blaming high speed for the crash that sent jose fernandez's speedboat hurling into these rocks early sunday. >> they've got a capsized vessel by the way. the boat struck the jetty. >> reporter: but this morning friends are revealing that for some reason, the marlins' ace pitcher was very upset before the accident.

and these text messages from earlier in the night between bill bernal and rivero, who was with fernandez at the time, bernal is begging them not to go out on the boat. try to keep him close to the shore if you go out. trust me, it's not my time yet. i know but try to keep jose cool, tell him what i said. bernal explained himself to a local miami station. >> i didn't have a good feeling about it. it's too dark at night. >> reporter: now a popular miami bar and restaurant, next to a boat dock near the accident scene, confirms fernandez and friends were there as late as 2:00 a.m., about an hour and a half before they were found dead. this morning, the families of the three young men are saying their final good-byes. >> his friend needed him, and he went to go support his friend, and he died being a friend. he died being a really good friend. under the current guidelines whereas avocados and almonds, i'm sure some of you have heard from your doctor to eat more of those. they are currently unhealthy under the old guidelines. so they are trying to create new guidelines around this. the old ones are based on 20-year-old research, of course, a low-fat diet back in the old days was the thing to do and a low sugar diet wasn't really the focus. well, now things have changed. there are millions of dollars at stake here. companies behind the scenes, some of them want them to stay the same. some of them would like to see change. now the fda is reaching out to all of us saying, what's healthy? >> a lot of eye rolling. a lot of eye rolling. >> i've been wasting my time eating all these avocados and almon almonds? i could have had some frosted flakes? my favorite. >> aren't we supposed to be get ago way from labeling things or people? i think this is dumbing down. we should be spending our money and time educating and empowering the public where we have two-thirds of our population overweight and obese putting a big healthy thing

we are back now with "gma we are back now with "gma investigates." this morning abc news learned consumer product safety commission is issuing a warning about certain top loading samsung washing machines after consumers reported explosions. the c. -- cpsc is working with samsung on a remedy and abc's gio benitez is here with exclusive details. good morning, gio. >> reporter: the cpsc says it involved certain samsung washing machines made between march 2011 and april 2016. the agency tells abc news they are working with samsung on a remedy that will help ensure that there are no further incidents. now take a look at this. >> code red. >> reporter: it's touted as a parent's life saver. kristen bell showing off one of samsung's top loading washing machines in a 2015 ad. at first, that's what melissa

thaxton thought about the model she bought. but this april, she says everything changed right as she was standing next to the running washing machine. >> all of a sudden without warning, the washing machine just exploded. and it was the loudest sound. it sounded like a bomb went off in my ear. there were wires, nuts, the actual top was laying on the floor. >> reporter: even more frightening, melissa says her then 4-year-old son, luke, was right next to her. >> i just remember covering my head and leaning over towards my son and just screaming this scream that didn't even know i could scream. >> reporter: this melissa says is her samsung washing machine right after the incident. in north carolina, sara price says her 2-month-old top loading samsung washing machine flew apart too. >> any one of us could have been in here and it just would have taken us out. >> reporter: it's not just melissa and sara. "gma investigates" learning 21 people since early last year have reported to the cpsc that

their top loading samsung washing machines had exploded or blown apart. melissa thaxton and several others have sued samsung. their lawyer, jason lichtman, argues this part, a support rod is insufficient to hold the tub in place and can become unfastened during the spin cycle. >> see right here, the rod can slide right out of this, and that's what causes the washing machine to blow apart. >> reporter: in a statement late tuesday, samsung told "gma investigates," in rare cases affect the units may experience about -- abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury or property damage when washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant items. the statement continues, saying, it is important to note that samsung customers have completed hundreds of millions of loads without incident since 2011. >> if that would have hit my child, it would have been catastrophic. that's why i'm speaking out. >> reporter: and the cpsc and samsung today, advising

bring your daughter to set day. >> yeah. >> bringing my mom to set is a whole other ball game. she walks in, it's like a tornado. look at these pics. >> oh, momma, momma goldie. yeah, well, you know, she's goldie hawn. she's wild. it's like -- it's like i remember when my mom would do hot lunch at school. and i was just like -- oh, no. you know, with the pizza and the thing, you know, singing things and i was like, oh, god. well, you know, she like pirouettes everywhere and it's the best. she is still pirouetting everywhere, but, you know, when you're a kid, you know, you're sort of your parents, when they're wild, and i think ryder is like that with me too so, you know, i get it. i get being scared. >> this is the first movie "deepwater horizon" where you get to work with your pa, kurt russell. >> again with the theme take your parents to work day.

i don't know if that was sort of equal. what was that like? >> that was cool. you know, what i really, really loved about being on set with -- we didn't have many scenes together in the film. but what i loved about being on set with him was it was a reminder of me where i fell in love with making movies and watching him, you know, it's a very different experience when you're watching a movie being made than watching the movie because it's horribly boring. i mean it's just being on set, oh, i love that picture. but it's really boring. and but for me as a kid i loved it. like i loved every aspect of it and i loved watching kurt because he's such a phenomenal actor, and he's -- yeah. [ applause ] and but he put so much care and effort into his roles and in a way that is different than i think of a lot of young people that i've worked with, you know, it's just a different mentality. >> a total master class at home. >> kind of, yeah.

>> let's talk about you because as mark wahlberg said you're sort of the emotional heart of this film. of "deepwater horizon." >> felicia in this film i play, i play mark's wife felicia williams and she -- really the character represents all of the families on the "deepwater," who were left in the dark for many hours not knowing what was going on with their families, not knowing -- not having any idea if they were going to come home and it was -- i literally get the chills every time i talk about it because i -- you got to be on set with these people and you get to talk about this experience that was incredibly traumatic. and you realize what felicia said, she said, one minute felt like an eternity and -- >> and she was on set with you. >> she was on set with us sometime, yeah, i got to talk to her a lot. she's a wonderful, very strong woman. >> i love that scene. >> yeah. >> let's show people a bit of

this. this is when your character, felicia, gets some really bad news. just look. >> natalie, this is felicia williams. our husbands work on the "deepwater horizon" together, well, i just called the coast guard, and they can just confirm there's a fire. i was wondering if maybe you heard something. >> what did the coast guard say? >> just that there's been a fire. >> shelly heard people were jumping off the rig. >> oh, gosh. i was telling -- >> i can't watch it. >> i know. i know. >> i can't watch it. very hard. yeah. >> for people who are not familiar with the story, yes, it was this horrible, horrible environmental disaster and that, but the 11 people that were killed, they almost became a footnote to the story and this -- these families were so appreciative of you and mark and the whole cast for bringing their story and letting people know how it impacted them. >> yeah, it was really wonderful to be in new orleans and have the premiere.

we did a premiere in new orleans where 9 of the 11 families were there, and you really felt it. you know, we felt it and we knew it when we were doing it. we just -- you have this sort of extra added thing in the back of your head going, you know, the families are going to see this movie, so you really want to be careful, and there's no carelessness going into making a film like that when you know the families are watching and then when you actually have the experience and you see that they just sort of have this moment to kind of pay -- it's just -- it sort of feels like, you know, a sort of memoriam, i guess, to these people who really saved each other. there were some real heroes on that rig. it's surprising that more did not die because they were so there for each other. >> and when you watch the film you're thinking, oh, my gosh. i mean, it's tragic that 11 lost their lives but so many more could have and mark's character

who he portrays -- >> i think -- yeah, he was the last one off the rig, mike williams, but the thing i think that pete did that's really amazing about this movie because, you know, i read the script. i know the story, and then i watched the movie, and i was completely engaged, which is rare when you're making movies and i think pete did this amazing job of sort of -- you feel like you're in -- it's full on, you know, you're in -- it's just almost like you feel this anxiety like i think people will really get an experience watching this movie that just goes, wow, oh, my god, you know. >> can we say this about you, you have always been a joy to watch. always very talented, but you have blossomed. [ applause ] into this beautiful, beautiful soul of an actress. thank you for sharing that. you know? >> thank you. >> ah. >> thank you. [ applause ]

[ applause ] but i just felt that museum is such an incredible testament to some of the bad stuff that has gone on in this country's history and we need to know what went wrong in order to get things right and that's what i feel that museum represents. >> absolutely, 100%. i agree with you. [ applause ] and something that you did get right is this film. i mean it's such a heartwarming film. it really is. but you learned how to play chess in this film from the master himself. >> i did. >> from the character you played. so, i'm curious when you learn to play chess from the guy who you're playing, who is a master, are you as good as he is now? >> no. i can be very clear about that. no, my self-esteem remained very

low while playing robert katende who i play in the film at chess but he's incredible. and not only did he teach me how to play but he taught me how to teach it which is a pretty complicated thing. >> i got my board set up in my dressing room after the show. give me a lesson. >> are you throwing down right now? >> i need some help. you can beat me. i need some help. that's what i'm saying. and the young lady, phiona, in this movie, is it true this is the first movie she's seen in her own life story? >> well, i -- while we were doing the film we shot it in katwe, uganda where it is set and i took a bunch of the kids to see "jurassic world," and madina sat next to me. her talons clawing in my arm, aaagh. and then at one point she turred to me doing the movie and said, is that what we are doing? and i suddenly realize it was the first time she had ever seen a movie on the big screen halfway through shooting a movie for disney. >> and it was about her life. >> yeah. >> amazing.
