>> good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. >> it's saturday, october 1st. thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking live doppler 7 for us. hi, lisa. >> good morning. we have a little bit in the way of fog. but really it's the cool temperatures not only this morning but also throughout the afternoon. a breezy winds that will visit us. temperatures are ranging from the upper 40s napa and novato. 350 los gatos, and a live look outside. the sun will be up at 7:06. we will have a sunny day today with numbers in the 60s and 70s. below average. tomorrow we are talking about a chance of thunderstorms and a

winter weather advisory and bringing back the storm impact scale. i'll explain coming up. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news out of contra costa county. a crash left a man dead on eastbound interstate 80 in crockett. it happened on the off-ramp. the driver was speeding when the car plowed into a highway sign and went into a field. the car went into a ref intervene turned over. one woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. officers say it's possible that alcohol was involved. more breaking news, this time out of the south bay. another crash involving a car and a pedestrian killed one person in san jose. it happened at 1:35 this morning on northbound highway 101 at the fully road off-ramp. no word on what caused the accident. developing news out of the east bay this morning. union city police are investigating a shooting that happened during a high school football game. it happened at james logan high school around 9:30.

no one was hurt. officers found someone hiding and took them into hospital but that person was later found not to be connected to the shooting and that person is not associated with the school. it's unclear how many people were involved in the shooting. police are still looking for the weapon. last night's giants game was a big one for the or rank and black, need to go win to get into the second wildcard spot. age pagen was not amused when two people ran out on to the field. >> yeah! [cheers and applause] >> pagan body slammed the man in the left field while security took down a woman in right field. the man was a protester calling attention to alleged animal abuse at farmer john, which supplies dodger dogs. the police tell us the man has been cited. abc7 sports director larry beil will have the highlights later

on in support. >> this church is deemed unstable. flames started pouring out of the church. abc7 news reporter katie shows us a look at the damage inside and the delays you should sect expect this weekend. >> from sky 7 you can see fire flaming through the first national church of berkeley. >> it's from the base of the chimney. >> a roof collapse led to a may day call for one fire a firing who escaped from a window. >> he was pretty terrified. you don't ever want to hear that. >> classrooms, offices and a recreational space destroyed. firefighters saved the sanctuary. >> the firefighters did an excellent job containing and i'm so thankful for their speedy action.

fire in the santa rosa crude mountains are making progress. there will be a community meet to go discuss updates. it starts at 10:00 at the cultural center. the fire has burned more than 4300 acres and is 50% contained. a dozen homes have been destroyed. katie has more on how flying embers could ignite a new fire. >> even without visible flames the loma fire poses a serious danger. >> it's a huge challenge for us. >> not only strong wind gusts in the overnight forecast, they said the wind is come from a new direction. >> we had to challenge part of our fire containment line that hasn't seen a lot of wind or floating embers passing through it. >> firefighters are work to go secure the lines as crews continue to comb through the smoldering aftermath of the fire. >> getting to the hotspots, getting water on them. it's definitely a lot out there.

>> scattered throughout the mountains, homes untouched by the fire and the remains of those destroyed. a dozen so far. >> you do your best effort to protect all homes. at the same time it's not worth anybody's life. >> there is marijuana being grown in the santa cruz mountains. plants like these have been revealed by the fire. some grows are legal, many are not. eradication teams have been sent to the loma fire. the santa clara county sheriff's department confirms it has initiated a marijuana operation. in los gatos, abc7 news. a and only the abc7 news i-team has learned the loma fire was a likely spot at the site is of a marijuana farm and the farm owner has ties to a dispensary in santa cruz. we have the story you see only on abc7 news. >> the man listed at ceo. the dispensary owns the 80-acre farm where the loma fire may have been. he issued a a statement through

his attorney. >> no firearms, no meth lab, no illegal grow. >> they would not tell us if the owner was running what he considered to be a legal marijuana farm. he said they all want answers about what sparked the blaze. >> we are actively trying to find out. he we are investigating and they are cooperating. >> new law enforcement and cal fire sources confirm what i reported wednesday. investigators are concentrating on that fan as the origin of the fire. last month neighbors identified the farm as a marijuana grow to me. more neighbors are speaking out. they don't want you to see their faces or know their names. they are concerned about the dane i from the many marijuana farms of that popped up the last few years. >> there are farms. >> they do that? >> oh, yeah. >> law enforcement tells me they have had shootouts with pot farmers in these fountains,

including mexican drug cartels. the neighbors showed me let speakers e-mails that support they have been come major to public officials for more than a year about the public pot farms. public safety and the environmental issues and the risk of wildfire. >> it's been for a couple years now. >> they have been drawing water out of the creek. they take their chemicals and run pvc pipe up the hill. we've seen barely anything going on to eradicate this situation. >> abc7's katie marzullo asked the supervisor about the neighbor's complaints that he failed to take action. >> we responded to those e-mails and forward them on to the sheriff's department that's responsible for enforcement of illegal grows. >> they said they could have and should have done more. the question is what will happen if the cannabis law passes. there's a big concern.

. >> protesters blocked an intersection last night following the release of two videos showing the fatal shooting of an unarmed black men. videos are graphic. the police chief said they released the clips under public pressure and show the shooting stance assumed by 38-year-old alfred. one shows him back being away from police officers as a gun was out. it was taken by the security camera of a nearby restaurant. the second shows video taken from a witness. it shows him point ago device at him before they takessed and then fatally shot him. police in charlotte, north carolina, announce they will release four camera and body dashcam videos of the fatal officer-involved shooting of keith scott. the videos will first be viewed by scotts family sometime next week.

the 43-year-old has shot and killed by officers on september 20th. police say he was armed. six armed robberies in six communities may be connected. sergio quintana has the details. >> one of the first violent incidents happened in this otherwise quiet neighborhood. a resident said it all started after 10:00 p.m. tuesday night. >> i heard, bang, five shots real loud. bang, bang, bang! oh, it was a gun. then i heard a woman screaming bloody murder. >> as soon as i heard the shots, i slipped up on the edge of the bed, looked out the street and saw a car escaping down the street. >> a neighbor had just arrived home and was accosted by two men in her driveway. thy opened fire on her. >> the woman suffered minor cuts

from the glass that was blown out of her car window. her husband was uninjured. the detective on the case is trying to see if this attack is connected to a series of other similar crimes across the east bay. according to a crime bulletin published by the lafayette police department, the attack and a couple in aurin da are similar to a violent carjacking in danville and antioch and pits full. the most recent was a teenager was robbed as she arrived home. >> as she began to open her driver's side door, two males approached her wearing dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. both pointed handguns at her and demanded her to cooperate. >> it's not clear if the same two men are responsible for all the crimes. police are hoping the public can help with information abc7 news. >> take a look at this, mexico's volcano erupted yesterday. you can see the lava spewing out

of the volcano. it forced hundreds of evacuations. it's one of the country's most active eruptions with more than 40 eruption. >> an earthquake has a 1 in 100 chance of hitting southern california by tuesday. the frightening prognosis comes after a swarm of 200 small quakes struck monday morning under the sea. it's south of where the san andreas fault ends. it's important to understand the chance of the triggering of a small a quake is small, but very real. hundreds hi the pavement for the annual half-marathon. tomorrow 17,000 people are expected to run. 49ers super bowl champion roger craig will be here.

runners will come from 48 states and many countries. now your accuweather country with lisa argen. >> good morning to you. we are waking up to just some patchy fog along the san mateo coast. here's live doppler 7. you see a little here at half moon bay and pescadero. the bigger picture, there's a very powerful hurricane matthew in the atlanta. you can see how the bullseye right here is moving toward the west and the winds are 155 miles an hour. that will make it is a category 4. as it moves up through the caribbean, right now it's south of haiti and jamaica. that will bring powerful winds, high surf, and this anywhere from 10 to 15 inches of rain, possibly in excess of 25 inches in parts of these pipe lands and the high surf up to cuba, beginning really late tomorrow. so powerful system to watch. it continues to move up.

you can see moving into the gulf stream there. so we will watch it and monitor it for you. we take a look at our own quiet weather from emeryville. 54 across the board. san jose, gilroy, half moon bay and san francisco. oakland, 52 degrees. the golden gate bridge, no fog here. 48 santa rosa. 54 concord, 50 livermore. things are changing. we felt it in the air. temperatures much, much cooler. this morning 3 to 5 degrees cooler than yesterday morning. and the trend will be to keep the temperatures in low average. mostly sunny and breezy today. enjoy that. we have scattered showers perhaps on the way tomorrow and another system late monday into tuesday, bringing the temperatures well below average. so if you are going to be into san francisco the next couple of days, on the cool side. breezy today, in the low 60s and the chance of shower. remember that? the storm impact scale. that's where we rate our storms from 1 to 5. 1 being the weakest with light, scattered showers. this is what we will talk about

throughout the day tomorrow, beginning in the north bay. as we get going tomorrow morning, 7:00, notice a couple light showers are possible. up until noontime you see the scattered showers maybe through san francisco. by the afternoon a few showers even in the south bay. then by 7:00 things are quietest. but in terms of amounts, it should be very, very light. this is sunday. i wouldn't cancel any plans but you notice out toward livermore and concord, a couple hundredth, maybe mountain view. this could change. but just some very widely scattered showers. this translates into snow in the sierra. winter weather watch from 11:00 tomorrow to 5:00 on monday. looking at high temperatures today. the south bay cool again. 71 san jose. look for mid-067's san mateo, san francisco 63 downtown. and north bay 72. novato, petaluma, 62.

>> good morning east bay, let's get up and get going. thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking the condition where's you live. good morning, chris. >> good morning, everyone. the cool down continues for the beginning of your weekend. here's a live look outside from emeryville. you notice that we do have a pretty good vantage point. not looking at much in the way of low clouds and fog.

it's clear and looking at numbers in the low to mid-50s from oakland to gilroy and half moon bay and the golden gate bridge. no problems here. upper 40s. fairfield 49. 54 in concord. look at our temperature profile for the day. we are looking at temperatures remaining cool along the coast. 50s there. low 60s in the city and just 70s in our far-reaching south bay and inland east bay. we will talk about the chance of showers. we are bringing back the storm impact scale and maybe even a thunderstorm and snow in the sierra nevada. very interesting. chris. >> lisa, thank you. san jose sales tax increase goes into effect today. voters approved it back in june. the sales tax will now be 9%, up from 8.75. it's expected to bring in $40 million a year for the next 15 years. officials say san jose has experienced a fiscally tough last ten years and needs the money to restore services.

there's only one other city with sales tax at 9%. and parts of sunnyvale starting today are off-limits to smokers. they can't smoke in any outdoor dining areas at events like farmers markets or public parks. it extends to apartment buildings, shared balconies and patios and shared common areas. the city wants to limit secondhand smoke exposure. governor jerry brown signed legislation mandating prison sentences force those who assault unconscious or severely intoxicated victims. yesterday the governor also signed a bill allowing more forms of sexual assault to be categorized as rape. both were inspired by the brock turner case, the swimmers who sentenced to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. to the race to the white house and donald trump's rant on twitter. the republican candidate tweeted early yesterday morning, quote,

guap. they are identifying her because she and her lawyers revealed her name publicly. a 28-year-old perez was accused with criminal sex charges with her, who was a minor at the time. he pleaded not guilty. judge released him on his own reconnaissance. that angered the attorneys who were in court. >> it's a double standard. because he's a police officer he's being treated specially. if he were a black man charged with this, he would certainly have to post bail. >> the charges included against oakland police officers and livermore police officers. one was arraigned a week ago with charges associated the case. after court jasmine's lawyer said they filed claims against six bay area cities and counties to failure to protect the young woman, who was sexually exploited. the claim is for millions of

dollars. ameda prosecutors have yet to charge an oakland officer and another who resigned in the wake of the investigation. a third officer has been charged when his case was continued. vic lee, abc7 news residents in san francisco's mission terrace community is trying to keep a school building on a site that's located with the last seasonal farms in the city. seasonal flowers you are doctor grown on this one-acre spot. a school called golden bridges bought the last years ago with the intention of relocating their campus there. according to the plans, the school would only have a few small structures. more than 70% of are the parcel would remain an open-space area. >> the students spend a lot of times indoors, in front. screens, not moving, not experiencing nature so we are getting them out. >> the owner of the farm has agreed to move on.

neighbors want the farm to stay put. while the planning department has approved the project, the board of supervisors can overturn that decision. a centuries-old practice has a new home in san francisco. abc7 news was there yesterday as the ribbon was cut opening the first west coast campus of the california institute of integral studies. tom is the maker of the world's largest maker of traditional chinese medicines. it features remedies with traditional medicines being offered. 5:347 is our time. the renovation of a park in san francisco has been extend add few months. the park near the western addition posts significant upgrades to their irrigation system, lawn and pathways. new trees will be planted. they will cost $4.3 million. there will also be a new viewing area for visitors to get a better vantage point of the city's skyline and the painted

2002. they found the seascape at the a church in new anan hidden in a farmhouse near an organized crime ring known for cocaine trafficking. both paintings were without frames. >> the mission of the paintings is a lot of good, i would say. but the seascape damage, part of it is broken off. there is substantial damage. >> that damage is about 5 centimeters wide. the museum plans to inspect both paintings closer to better assess damages. >> not much confident from forecasters this year we will have a wet winter. although last winter brought a highly anticipated el nino, this winter will be what forecasters call neutral. there's noel nino that typical brings wet weather and no dry
