live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> tonight searchers are looking for a missing kayaker in the san francisco bay. good evening, i'm eric thomas. thank you for joining us. the kayaker was in the water in south san francisco off oyster point. we have developing details. >> reporter: right now this search is being coordinated by the fire battalion chief sitting inside that red suv, and in the darkness there are a number of rescue boats from post sides of the bay involved in this search. they're searching for that kayaker who was reported missing this evening just before 6:00 p.m. >> right now we're confident we have a lot of resources out there and a lot of well trained folks with a lot of good technology. we're hoping for a good outcome. >> reporter: at one point there were eight rescue motor boats

and two aircraft. they're searching a pretty extensive area stretching from candle stick point in san francisco all the way down to the san mateo bridge in foster city and beyond. earlier this evening a coast guard helicopter spotted what the crews believe is the missing person's kayak, but there is still no sign of that missing man. it's not yet clear how long these crews are going to continue searching. we are trying to learn a little bit more about that kayaker, but all these rescue crews are still involved in this search, so they haven't really shared many details about him. reporting live in south san francisco, abc7 news. thank you very much. rain is coming to parts of the bay area. you heard me correctly. rain is coming as we go outside to the east bay hills camera and you see the traffic on the bay bridge. let's check in with drew and find out what it is.

>> we're tracking light showers for sunday with early season system that's moving in from the north. live doppler showing a quiet picture. mainly clear skies. the system is just to the north. live doppler 7 zooms in tighter off the coast of crescent city. that system is moving on shore overnight. bring back the storm impact scale. you rank our storms all season long. this weak system is a one, a light storm. widely scattered showers. under a ternt of an inch of rain and a slight chance of thunder. a flier in san francisco's mission district destroyed four apartments leaving about nine people homeless. abc7 was there today and has details on the fire and a quick response by emergency crews. >> reporter: this is video of the fire shot by a neighbor.

you can see flames and thick black smoke coming from the garage building. one neighbor said he could smell the smoke and then he heard three pops. >> i get a call from my father saying he heard three loud explosions. he thinks it was, like, a pipe or something that burst. >> reporter: according to fire department, those explosions may have been paint cans in the garage or another item catching fire. a full investigation is not complete. i talked briefly with two men who live in one of the top floor parents. thy didn't want to be interviewed on camera, but they said they ran out as soon as they smelled smoke and rescue crews didn't find anyone else home. >> they went through this entire building two times. they were sure there was nobody affected inside. >> reporter: there are nine people who lived in four upstairs apartments. the american rez cross is providing shelter for them.

the corner store downstairs is shut down at least through the weekend. this was one of three fires in three different parts of the city called in at about the same time. >> with all the three of the fire, there's nothing that appears to be innefarious. members of the first congregational church in berkeley have somewhere to worship tomorrow after a fire gutted their east bay church. a fence is going up around the building destroyed on friday. a fire tore through pilgrim hall. it collapsed the roof. it's red tagged. church leaders are vowing to rebuild. >> all that's holding the bricks are the bricks below them. any shifting of debris could cause a collapse. >> i'm thinking it's a lot of work, but i'm thinking we can do hard things.

>> reporter: the pes baa teern church is opening their doors. roof work was under way to insta install new solar panels. a fire burned 4400 acres but it's now 66% contained. the fire has destroyed 12 homes. today we were in morgan hill where dozens of home affected by the fire attended a community meeting at the community and cultural center. they're happy with the progress they made over the last 24 hours. >> yesterday our concern was the winds from the northwest. it angle in spoo that area. the lines held. we're looking good. >> some 600 people have been displaced by the fire. neighbors are stepping up to help them. lisa has more from santa clara alcantara. >> anybody and everybody that comes over here gets fed. >> reporter: this woman arrived monday and has barely left.

she's personally manning this food and water supply station she started two hours after the loma fire erupted. >> i went out and spent $1500 out of my money the first day, $1,000 the second day and then the donations started coming. >> reporter: coffee, water, hot meals, it's all been pouring in. community members and strangers are answering the call for help. 12 homes and 16 buildings have been destroyed and hundreds have been evacuated. this was jenna garner smith's home as fire surrounded it. it was spared, but her guest cottage was not. >> it was very intense. i feel very grateful that we have what we have. >> reporter: many have lost everything and they need help. that's why the volunteer fire association is trying to get mobile homes like this one donated to fire victims. >> it is imimportant for them to be home, and their property is home. and most of them have nowhere else to go.

>> reporter: most of those impacted are staying with friends, but that can only last so long. so far only two mobile homes have been donated. the association is looking for ten more. unfortunately, not everyone has good intentions. there was a warning issued after scammers set up fake go fund me pages and asked for cash. all of which was supposed to help those affected by the fire. abc7 news. if you'd like to help the effort to buy more mobile homes for evacuees, we have the information on our website. neighbors complained. city hall listened and starting today you need a special permit to park on weekend and holidays. we were at the base of mission peak. signs like these line many streets. neighbors complained about con versi jegs and parking spaces

the artist says burning man inspired the 55-foot tall sculpture of a nude woman. he wants to consider what the world would be like if women were safe when they view his statue. a popular lake will be inspected for an invasive species. the east bay regional parkt district will be looking for muscles that are originally from ukraine. they can damage the eco system by eating the plankton and they clog water pipes and boat engines. the inspection fee for motorized boat is $5. richardson bay will be closed to all boats from now through the end of march. that's 900 acres. the closure happens every year to protect migrateing birds ove

rereturns and "the new york times" suggests he might not have paid taxes for years. he lost so much money in 1995 he could avoid federal taxes for up to 18 years. san jose police are looking for a stabbing suspect. investigators search for evidence. officers tell us a bleeding man stumbled into a hotel parking lot and is expected to survive after being stabbed several times. his attacker ran away before police officers could get there. los angeles police shot and killed an 18-year-old black man today. officers tried to pull over the vehicle believing it was stolen because of the paper plates. the driver sped away. after a few blocks a passenger ran in the car. he was shot in front of his 17-year-old sister. police did not say what led to the shooting but said hi recovered a weapon.

more officers were called after an angry crowd gathers. the search for answers for a deadly train crash in new jersey. they are trying to get key information about what happened. abc7 news reporter has an update. >> reporter: beneath the massive tangle of steel and glass, crucial evidence in the train crash that killed one person and injured 114 others. >> because of the asbestos and the unsettled structures, i'm not allowing anybody to go in. >> reporter: at this point the extent of the wreckage is keeping ntsb investigators from examining the main part of the crash. trapped down there a forward facing camera. they want to know how fast the train was going and into the brakes were used. >> we have multiple walking wounded. >> reporter: investigators recovered one of event recorders seen here. the one kept at the back of the
