sunday, october 2nd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning. hi, everyone. >> the high and mid-level clouds are advancing throughout the day as a cold front makes its way to the south. we are looking at a couple opportunities. rain. this system heading to the east, but a portion slipping south. we are rating it from 1 to 5 on our storm impact scale. it will bring us widely scattered showers. most cities under a tenth of an inch. rain but some could see more than that. 54 mountain view, 50 los gatos. forecast calls for a dry first half of the day. scattered showers from noontime throughout the afternoon. then we dry out, the winds kick up. and i'll tell you when it should rain in your neighborhood coming up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. developing news. searchers are looking for a missing kayaker in the san francisco bay. crews found his kayak but no sign of him. he was reported missing just before 6:00 last night.

crews say that the unidentified man was in the water just off oyster point in south san francisco. rescuers are searching from candlestick point to the san mateo bridge. that's foster city. >> right now we are confident that we have a lot of resources out there. we have a lot of well-trained folks with good technology so we are hoping for a good outcome. >> emergency crews have not shared many details about the kayaker yet, and it's not clear how long they plan to keep up the search. san jose police are looking for a stabbing suspect. they were near silicon valley boulevard and highway 101. investigators searched for evidence last night. officers said a bleeding man stumbled into a hotel parking lot. he is expected to survive after being stabbed several times. his attacker ran away before police arrived.

>> nine people are without homes this morning after the fire destroyed four apartments. we have the details on the quick response yesterday afternoon by emergency crews. >> reporter: this is video of the fire shot by a neighbor. you can see flames and thick, black smoke coming from the garage video. one neighbor said he could smell the smoke and then he heard three pops. >> almost like a surreal holiday sound. >> so i get a call from my father saying that he's heard three explosions, three loud explosions. he thinks it was like a pipe or something that burst >> reporter: according to the fire department, the explosions may have been paint cans in the garage or another item catching fire, but a full investigation of the inciden is not complete. we talked to two men in one of the top-floor apartments. they didn't want to be

interviewed on camera but they ran out as soon as they smelled smoke and rescue crews didn't find anybody else home. >> we went through the building two times, and we are convinced no one else is inside the building. >> the american red cross is helping to provide shelter and the corner store downstairs and also shut down, at least for the weekend. the fire in the mission was actually one of three fires in three different parts of the city that were called in about the same time. >> at this time with all theme fires we've had, there is nothing that appears to be out of order. >> no one was injured in any of delete fires. investigators are still trying to determine the cause of each of them. in san francisco, sergio quintana, abc7 news. members of berkeley church, a historic east bay church, has a place to worship this morning. -- or this afternoon after fire gutted their church. on friday a massive fire tore through pill better through pilgram hall that housed offers and classrooms.

no word on the cause, but there was work underway on new roof solar panels. it collapsed the roof. they were underway to install new solar panels. the brick building is now red tagged. church leaders are vowing to rebuild. >> no earthquake, wind conditions, any shifting of debris could cause a collapse. >> this is going to be a lot of work, but i'm thinking we can do good things. >> and meanwhile the presbyterian church across the street will open their doors at 2:00 this afternoon for sunday services for those displaced by the fire. firefighters are making progress against a destructive wildfire in the santa cruz mountains. it's burned more than 4400 acres. it's 66% contained. the fire has destroyed 12 homes. abc7 news was in morgan hill where dozen of people affected by the loma fire attended a meeting. they said they are happy with the progress they have made o far this weekend.

>> our concern was the winds and coming from the northwest, which angle right into that particular area. the lines she would so we are looking really good. >> some 600 people have been displaced by the fire. fortunately neighbors are stepping up to help them. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has more from santa clara county. >> anybody and everybody that comes over gets fed. >> jennifer swift eagle arrived at the park monday and has barely left since. she's personally manning this food and water supply station she started two hours after the loma fire erupted. >> i went out and spent $1,500 of my money the first day. i spent 1,000 the second day, and then the donations starting coming in. >> coffee, water, snacks, hot meals. it's all been pouring in. community members and strangers are answering the call for help. 12 homes and 16 buildings have been destroyed, and hundreds >> have been evacuated.

this was jenna smith's home as fire surrounded it. it was spared, but her guest cottage was notice. >> it was very intense. i feel very grateful with the home we have. >> many have lost everything and they need help. that is why the volunteer fire association is trying to get mobile homes like this one donated to fire victims. >> it is important for them to be home, and their property is home. and most of them have nowhere else to go. >> most of those impacted are staying with friends, but that can only last so long. so far only two mobile homes have been donated. the associatin is look for ten more. unfortunately not everyone has good intentions. cal fire issued this warning after scammers set up fake gofundme pages and even asked for cash, all of which was supposed to help those affected by the fire. in santa clara county, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 home.

>> if you want to help the effort to buy homes for the evacuees we have the information on our website, abc7news.com. new this morning, santa rosa san mateo officials are warning about a possible mountain lion sighting. they sent an alert saying someone spotted what she believed to be the animal near of the intersection of britain avenue and almeda in san carlos. they aren't saying when this happened. officials advise you keep your distance if you do encounter the big cat. >> neighbors complained and city hall listened, and starting this weekend you will need a special permit to park near fremont's mission peek on weekends and holidays. we were at the base as hikers climbed toward the summit yesterday. signs like these all over the streets. neighbors complained about the congestion and parking spaces disappearing near their homes.

expect some rain today. back-to-back systems on the way. lisa will be along shortly to tell you what that is all about and when the dry weather will reappear. >> no one knows how he got there, but a contra costa firefighter rescued a man stuck in a storm drain in pittsburgh. they tweeted this photo of yesterday's rescue. firefighters responded when smoke was report the coming from a storm drain. they found a man with severe cuts to his hand, as well as a bicycle in the drain under the city. pittsburgh police are investigating if the homeless are using those drains. >> and in marin county, firefighters had to use a rope system to rescue a cyclist who went off the road. he tumbled down a 35-foot steep ravine. it happened when he was going up hill slowly. firefighters said he slowed so much that the road bike tipped

over near the drop-off. the cyclist was unable to brace himself because his shoes were clipped to the pedals. he went over the side and the bike stayed on the road. >> a lot of the road bikes and the mountain bikes, their feet will actually attach to the pedals. when you lose balance, you have to get them unclipped at a rapid pace. he did not. >> the cyclist went to the hospital with at least the one broken bone plus cuts and bruises. an art project one a step closer to being completed in san leandro. yesterday abc7 news was at the campus right after parts of the statue called truth is beauty arrived. you see the upper legs there. it was at the bart station.

>> happening today, there be a news conference to discuss support of colin kaepernick's national anthem protest. organizers say they want to unify around issues of police violence and police community relations. they will take a knee along with kap in the matter of the first amendment right of public protest. it all starts at 11:00 at the santa clara convention center on great america parkway. also happening today, if you are going to the 49er's game this afternoon, bring an unopened pack of hug guys diapers to donate for babies in need. fans can be entered to win tickets to a future game. it's all part of no baby unhugged, which donates to the bay area diaper bank help a mother out. even if you are not going to the game, you can donate diapers at your legal safeway through next sunday.

attendees are asked to donate five dollars to ten dollars. each year the money is distributed to dozens of organizations that provide essential services to the community. the fair runs from 11:00 until 6:00. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> october offering us some changeable weather. in fact, much cloudier today. some scattered showers and much, much cooler than average. here's live doppler 7. we have fog along the san mateo coast and also in the north bay and east bay. but it's a pretty strong area of low pressure that will be slide to go the south and east and a little bit of this energy will sweep through the bay area about noontime. it will hold together to bring some showers even as far south as the south bay. here's the category 4 very strong hurricane. it's matthew. it continues to spin up through the caribbean. it's about 320 miles south of haiti. there are hurricane warnings for haiti, jaw maka and cuba. angle tis plate anywhere from 15 to 25 inches of rain.

they could even see more rain than that. it will be a rough time of it here the next 24 hours. it will continue to weaken but the gulfstream water very, very warm. with he will have to see what happens as it continues to move up through the gulfstream. as we look outside our window right now, emeryville, temperatures ranging from mid-40s in gilroy to upper 35's oakland and half moon bay. 355 san francisco. the golden gate -- 55 san francisco. the fog is a little patchy. liver more checking in at 54. a typically cool start. we will see partly cloudy skies this morning. chance of showers toward the late morning hours and noontime in the north bay. we will do it all again tomorrow but this system will be a little slower. we will see it more toward the evening hours. and in between some breeze city winds. 1 or the storm impact scale with a couple hundredths inch of rain with up to a tenth possibly. some could see more than that and we also could see a rumble

of thunder. after 12:00 it's more likely you will see it in the east bay, perhaps the livermore valley, san ramon. and down toward game time, maybe a few scattered showers cupertino. then the system will clear out. we see typically cool temperatures. and rainfall amounts with this system showing a little bit more concentrated up in the north bay. a couple hundredths in the city, down along the peninsula. maybe .05 in livermore. we talked about the snow. we could see a couple inches highest elevations around 6,000 feet. then by 7:00 tomorrow morning, which want to keep the umbrella handy because by the afternoon, in the evening commute, more scattered showers once again. this one, too, a 1 on the storm impact scale. breezy afternoon results as the front pushes through. 65 san mateo. and 66 richmond.

through the atlantic as we speak. the country in the builds eye, the incredibly vulnerable haiti. we are monitoring whether it could hit the u.s. it's all coming up on gms on a busy sunday. back to you. >> thank you. details of tests of mosquitoes at miami beach show they may still be infected with the zika virus. tests have to be confirmed but if they are, it would being the 6th mosquito sample to test positive in a small area of miami beach this past month. officials have been spraying to get rid of of the affected mosquitoes. at least 35 people at miami beach have contracted zika locally. >> nest flicks went down about two and a half hours yesterday afternoon. no word on what caused the outage but netflix responded to twitter users who vented their frustration saying we are back. the interruption came at a bad time for the service.

sister. relatives identified him. police did not say what led to the shooting, but do say he was armed with a gun. residents are questioning that account. more officers were called in to guard the scene after an angry crowd gathered and started shouting at them. the driver of the car is still on the loose. >> the search for answers has hit a roadblock in the deadly train crash in new jersey. investigators are waiting to find something about key information about what could have happened. we have an update. >> reporter: beneath the massive tangle of steel and glass, crucial evidence in the train crash that killed one person and injured 14 months. >> because of the asbestos and the other structures that we are

not sure about, i'm not allowing anybody to go in there. >> it's keeping the investigators from investigating even the main part of the crash. trapped down there is is a forward facing camera. they want to know exactly how fast the train was going and if the brakes were used before it slammed into the station thursday morning. >> we have multiple injuries. >> investigators already recovered one of the event recorders seen here, the one kept at the back of the train. that information now being downloaded at the manufacturer. investigators did speak with the engineer, 48-year-old tom gallagher. but there are no details on that meeting. preliminary drug and alcohol tests for him came back negative. >> so far witnesses say the train appeared to be going three times faster than normal as it approached the platform. the impact so violent, part of the station's ceiling collapsed, raining debris down on the hundreds of people standing around waiting. while the ntsb wants to get

access to more of the wreckage, investigators are interviewing more witnesses and reviewing multiple videos. >> our objective is, as always, to not just find out what happened, but why is it happened so we can prevent it from happening again. abc news, new york. technology can't stop earthquakes, as you know, but it can play a role in forecasting when one might hit. seismologists want be to know in these small ripples in california salt and sea might tell them when the big one might be coming. they are concerned about the effects on the san andreas fault. experts say the san andreas is overdue for a major quake. >> each earthquake is a little change in stress and a poke on all the faults around it. and we have this really big cat there that will eventually push it over the cliff. each little one isn't enough to

happening today, the blue angels will arrive in the bay area for fleet week. yesterday the blue angels had to cancel their show in sacramento because the flight leader became sick. the san francisco show is expected to go on as planned this week starting thursday. the blue angels will arrive at oakland international airport at 6:00 tonight, and the uss san diego will also arrive today at the maraposa yacht club in san francisco. will the weather cooperate? >> good conditions by midweek but some people want a little bit of this. clouds and rain on the way not only today, but another chance
