right now we expect to see impacts all the way in florida's east coast. >> preparations are under way in the u.s., but hurricane matthew has already had a devastating effect in the caribbean. good afternoon, and thank you for joining us today. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm larry biel. hurricane matthew made landfall in haiti this morning, but it is showing no signs of weakening and so far this storm is being blamed for at least four deaths around threatening the east coast from the florida keys to the carolinas. abc news reporter elizabeth hur in new york with the latest. elizabe elizabeth. >> >> larry, good afternoon, everyone to you. right now we're looking at the carolinas and georgia all under a state of emergency. bottom line, officials say they are not taking any chances, and in fact in south carolina,

evacuations start tomorrow. hurricane matthew first making landfall in haiti. as the most powerful hurricane in decades pounding the region with torrential rain and dangerous storm surges is on the move after drenching jamaica, cuba and the bahamas, now bracing for more heavy wind and rain that could trigger massive mud slides and devastating floods. >> i pray that everybody is safe, and -- and it's not as bad as they are predicting. >> reporter: the american coast also on alert. take a look at these empty store shelves and this long line outside of a costco in florida. residents are stocking up after warnings from officials in florida to the carolinas urging the public to be prepared for the worst case scenario. >> you don't want to take a changes. you've got to listen to local officials. look, they are -- you have a great team here.

they want to do the right thing. they want to do the right thing and everybody is going to listen to them. >> and because of hurricane matthew, president barack obama announced today that he is cancelling campaign events in florida tomorrow instead. we're told he's headed to fema headquarters to stay on top of these developments. that's the very latest from here in new york. elizabeth hur, abc news. larry, back for you. >> have airlines announced any contingency plans? are flights already being cancelled? >> reporter: yeah. that's right. already there are conslations but at this point they are limited to flights to and from the caribbean, but at this moment the major airlines have already said they are waiving changing fees. however, if you do have any immediate travel plans, you're being asked to check with your airline just to be safe. larry? >> all right. elizabeth hur in new york, thank you. spencer christian has been monitoring the storm and is here now with a closser look at what's happening right now. spencer? >> okay. ama, and larry, this is how

hurricane matthew looks on live doppler 7, a massive category 4 monster storm. hurricane and tropical storm warnings have been issued for southern florida and the keys. hurricane keys, most of florida's coast, most of the hurricane warnings in effect for bahamas. it's a category 4 and will remain a category 4 tomorrow as it moves up through the bahamas still as a category 4 on thursday near the atlantic coast of florida, and maintains that strength when it downgrades slightly to a category 3 near jacksonville and goes up along the coast of georgia and the carolinians and weakening to a category 2 by saturday. that's still a very powerful and dangerous storm and then it heads up to new york and boston. on sunday, still as a category 1 hurricane, this is a powerful potentially dangerous and damaging storm and, of course, i'll stay on top of all developments with this storm. more had a little bit later. ama? >> spencer, thank you so much. authorities have arrested

six people in connection with home invasion robberies in three east bay communities. those robberies happened in danville, fremont and livermore in the last few weeks. more arrests could be made. authorities tell abc 7 news it's still an open investigation. >> police are looking for a driver who took them on a high speed chase through several east bay cities this morning. officers first spotted the stolen truck in vallejo around 1:00 in the morning. the driver then led them on a high-speed chase along interstate 80 and 880 as well as surface streets. it ended 40 miles south in hay wad. the chp called off the search once it hit city streets. a south bay plan pleaded guilty today to torturing or killing more than 20 cats. >> robert farmer appeared in court in san jose. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen joins us live at the hall of justice with this story. chris? >> larry and ama, the defendant in this case was arrested one year ago this week, so today's guilty plea will certainly help some of the affected families

heal, but in talking to many of them, they say that there will never be full closure. >> reporter: 25-year-old robert farmer surprised some in the courtroom by pleading guilty to 21 counts of felony animal cruelty and two misdemeanor counts. >> what he did to our cats was horrible. my cat thumper ended up in a trash can. >> reporter: myriam martinez is among those who lost her cats. she still can't get over what happened. >> he was killing these poor cats by the elementary school. he did horrible inhumane things to these poor animals. >> what did. >> reporter: what prevents him from doing something else to somebody else? >> reporter: farmer faces up to 16 years in prison after admitting these crimes which happened over a two-month stretch last fall. the deputy district attorney alexandra ellis says surveillance video helped detectives track him down. >> our heartsgo out to the families that were affected by this crime, and we look forward to mr. farmer being held accountable for the heinous act. >> reporter: officials are the humane society hope this case serves as a learning opportunity

for the community. >> educate children from a very early age to respect and care for animals and to identify with animals as part of the community. >> reporter: an lal lovers leaving the building with a heavy heart. >> makes me sad that people can actually take a living thing and actually do that to them without any thought. >> reporter: families who have been affected will have a clans to address farmer when he returns to court on december 8th n.san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. fairfield police are dismissing yet another one of those creepy clown threats making the rounds nationwide on social media. classes went on without a hitch today at fairfield high and at grange middle school a day after someone claiming to be a member of the clown gang threatened violence on twitter. the district sent out an alert to parents last night. similar threats nationwide have prompted schools to cancel classes including two tuite outside seattle. creepy clown threats or sightings have been reported in

at least 22 states, but there's yet to be a single act of violence associated with them. life is slowly returning to normal for residents in the loma fire zone in the santa cruz mountains. today authorities lifted all evacuation orders and road closures stemming from the fire that broke out last week and destroyed 12 homes. cal fire says that fire is now 90% contained. if you would like to help any of the victims we've set up a link to the official fire fund. look for that on our website, abc 7 news.com. for a second day residents of a san jose mobile home park are dealing with a muddy mess outside and no running water inside. work crews broke a water main and now the community is paying the price. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson has the story. >> reporter: knee-deep sludge coats former roads. residents of the east ridge estates mobile home parks say a single blacktop repair project has turned into a nightmare that won't end. construction crews broke a water main yesterday just two weeks after they severed a gas line. >> it's hard because, i mean, we

had to like sponge bath my kid last night. can't wash clothes. >> reporter: a few weeks ago he couldn't kick. >> we had to like kind of microwave water. couldn't use the stove. >> reporter: he's frustrated and he's not alone. >> i don't think they had it well planned out before they started digging and breaking the ground up and things like that. >> reporter: the management company is offering residents pool water to flush. they also brought in a few port apoints and a truck with bottled water. however, some families say they didn't get a delivery, and trekking through the muck isn't easy for the elderly. >> it's just been a big headache with all these people not using water and having no bathrooms and havinging to walk through the rocks. it's pretty hard. >> reporter: today crews discussed laying down a plywood path for residents and they are trying to fix the broken water main. management says families can shower at their other mobile home park, but with construction taking up so many parking spaces, many are reluctant to move their cars. what do you think about management? have they been doing enough?

>> no, they have actually been closing the doors. >> reporter: the property management company says the water main has actually been fixed. however, they are waiting on test results to make sure that the water is safe to drink before turning it back on for all of the residents. in san jose, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> the milipitas city council is expected to take action tonight after dozens of complaints about a stinky odor. the city council says it's received 72 odor complaints in less than a month. some think that stench is coming from the newbie island landfall, and tonight members plan to update the council's odor control report. they are trying to iron things out before milipitas regulars dents vote on a ballot measure in november that will decide whether to double the size of that landfill. >> foster city is ready to reward its residents who go solar. the city council has approved a $200,000 solar fund. each household that installs the

the warriors are playing their second preseason game tonight at oracle arena, and normally a preseason game wouldn't be a big deal, but this is the first chance for golden state fans to see the newest acquisition, kevin durant, in a warriors uniform in person. abc 7 sports anchor mike shuman joins us from oracle with the debut of k.d. shu? >> reporter: as you mentioned, they have been in camp for two days and played two preseason game and steve kerr said we haven't even put in our offense or defense yet and this is a good chance to get everybody acclimated, namely a guy called kevin durant. k.d. struggled in his first game

saturday night against toronto up in vancouver. that's to be expected. doesn't know his teammates, and it will be interesting to get him to america along with the bench and the core players. now, kevin's been an mvp. he's an established player, so he is going to pick it up and he said there's a long way to go to catch up with his teammates. >> need to learn a lot about the game of basketball, you know. i'm not as smart as i thought i was about the game, you know. it's played a different way here than i was used to playing, and -- and i learned a lot obviously in my years in the league and this is a different system and philosophy of basketball that i'm learning so it's going to take some time. >> reporter: warrior fans have always viewed k.d. as the enemy and comes in for the first time as a golden state warrior and should be a lot of money and mo speights coming back to town as a los angeles clipper so a nice little reunion for everybody. reporting live in oracle, 7:30

well, americans are expected to spend at a faster clip this holiday season than they did last year. the national retail federation is forecasting sales to rise 3.6% to more than $655 billion thanks to a strong economy. holiday sales account for nearly 20% of annual retail industry sales. southwest is holding its twice a year massive sale with round trip fares dropping below $100. flights from sfo to burbank, vegas, l.a., orange county and san diego are all $49 one way. we found ten different destinations out of oakland including portland, seattle and reno at $49 one way. the sale ends thursday night. >> spencer christian, where do we want to go? $49? >> i want to go out on the embarcadero with the weather we have. >> stay right here. we've got awesome weather coming our way and fleet week. >> yeah. >> so the two go together. a look at live doppler 7. you can see it that we have mainly clear skies right now. just a few high clouds moving through the bay area sky, and it's pleasantly cool afternoon,

but we've got some warm days ahead. this is a view of the partly cloudy skies from mt. tam. that's a gorgeous view looking down on to the bay under mostly blue skies. currently 63 degrees. here at san francisco, oakland 69 and 69 in mountianview and 71 at san jose. 74 at gilroy and half moon bay 61 degrees. check out this view of partly cloudy skies over the golden gate. our inland temperature readings are almost uniform. we've got low to mid-70s at santa rosa, napa, novato and fairfield and one more live look from our rooftop here at abc 7 overlooking the bay and these are our forecast features. sunnier and milder tomorrow. much warmer days lie ahead friday through sunday and high temperatures inland during that period will be near 90 degrees, so perhaps even above 90 in some spots. overnight though, it won't be anywhere near 90, barely near 50 in some spots. lows dropping to the mid-50s in santa rosa and napa upper 40s and right near the bay and the coast, lows in the low to mid-50s and moving along to tomorrow, look for sunny skies,

breezy conditions at the coast. once again highs will range from low 60s at the coast to low to mid-70s around the bay to mid to upper 70s inland. now, looking ahead. fleet week, this week, and into the weekend, of course. the air show, big air show, well, air shows all three days and friday it will be from noon to 4:00 p.m. all three days will be sunny and all three days will be mild here in san francisco with highs in the 70s. can't ask for more than that here in san francisco. skipping ahead to early next week, more rain on the way starting our forecast animation next tuesday at 5:00 in the afternoon. look for some light rain or showers moving into the north bay first during the night time hours and into the overnight hours next wednesday and then lingering a little bit into midday wednesday before disappearing leaving us with rainfall totals that may exceed a quarter of an inch in the north bay, a quarter inch to the central bay and less than a tenth of an inch expected in the south bay. accuweather seven-day forecast. a little milder tomorrow than

robbery in paris over the weekend? french authorities say it may have been the reason she was targeted. abc news reporter dawnia backes has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: new details about the terrifying robbery involving kim kardashian west. official french sources saying the thieves dressed as police officers tied her up, put duct tape around her head and plastic cable ties around her wrist and locked her in the bathroom. she was able to free her hands and go to a balcony and call for her help. >> great questions about her security. >> there's all sorts of ways to figure out if she was alone or not. >> and questions about her use of social media are starting to surface. the robbery happened after 2:00 a.m. monday after the reality star posted this snapchat from the apartment where she was staying. the thieves escaped with more than $10 million worth of jewelry and including a ring worth $4.5 million, reportedly a gift from husband kanye west

that she showed off on her instagram page just days ago. paris police saying it was really the celebrity who was real targeted, with possessions that have been seen and noticed via social media, and it was these goods that the attackers targeted. kardashian west was traveling with a body guard. he apparently was at a nearby club with her mom and sister when the robbery occur. now the search for the suspects continues. >> actor ben stiller is crediting a much-maligned prostate cancer test with saving his life. today stiller posted an essay on the website medium describing his own battle with prostate cancer two years ago. he believes he wouldn't be cancer-free today without a prostate specific antige known as a psa test. it's the most common test. however, many doctors point out there's no accurate marker to identify people with prostate cancer. they believe false positives lead to unnecessary biopsies and

about what's going to happen. talk about the importance. >> not the drama or viewership we saw in the smack-down between hillary clinton and donald trump. this is important. 34 days out from the election and people are already starting to vote, and for both these sides it's a critical point. donald trump is on his heels this week because of comments he's made about miss universe, taxes, you know, sexual harassment. it goes on and on. he's got problems, and hillary clinton is rising in the polls in battleground states, especially with women, so for both republican mike pence and democrat tim kaine, this is a moment where they have got to make no gaffs, do no harm, but they have got to make the case for their candidate. >> we keep saying, you know, the latest thing and trump is in trouble, but, i mean, it doesn't seem to matter. we'll find out in november, but what does pence have to do? does he have to project some kind of stabilizing image where he's just not going to be kind of take being the bait on a lot of issues that are potentially inflammatory? >> mike pence has the tougher

job to the. he has to be the political swiffer, if you will, and clean up after a lot of donald trump's problems this week. he had probably the worst week in his campaign ever, and the polls are starting to show, it so he's got to put -- make the case that hillary clinton is a political insider, is not going to represent change and that donald trump will, but you'll also see tim kaine, the democrat, come back at him. for both these guys, this debate is not about them, it's about the number one person on the ticket, and so that -- that is their job tonight to lift them up and to maybe have some actual policy discussion tonight. >> right, and, you know, it is important, but as you mentioned, it's not going to have the viewership like we saw last week. can it real sway things either way for either candidate? >> you know, ama, you're right. it can. usually a lot of vice presidential debates go under the radar but the fact is there are moments, dan quayle as not

perfect attendance in a single school year is pretty impressive, but one east bay high school senior is top of her class with 11 consecutive years without an absence. whoa. >> pittsburgh high senior maria gonzalez was given a big perfect attendance trophy yesterday by the school's principal. not missing a day in 11 straight school years is an all-time record for the district. it's a family affair for mariah because two of her siblings also won perfect attendance awards. >> a lot like our sports department. sometimes all it takes a child you care is to get down to their level. that's what happened in indianapolis recently. a capitol police officer precious jones and isn't she perfectly named, saw a child having a bad day and decided to lie down next to him and have a little champ the picture of this random act of kindness has received an overwhelming positive response on social media. officer jones said she just wanted to show the child that

it's fleet week and an effort is being launched to offer the city's best known war correspondent. this image of our marines raising the u.s. flag on iwo jima was taken by a san francisco journalist the late joe rosenthal. one of the most iconic images of the second world war and now a group of veterans and journalists is asking the navy to name a ship after the photographer. abc 7 news caught up with rosenthal's daughter today as she worked on restoring a mural at the maritime museum.

they buy naked juice drinks. >> 9:007 on your side's" michael finney has details of a lawsuit filed by the centers for science and the public interest. >> an interesting one. lawsuit filed against naked juice-maker pepsico alleges the company knows it can charge more for products perceived to be more healthy. the suit says products like naked veggie kale blazer mislead the consumer into thinking that kale is a primary ingredient in the drink. kale is king but it's only the third biggest juice in the product behind orange juice and apple juice. other naked products display other ingredients prominently but, again, the lawsuit says those ingredients are not the predominant ones. pepsico calls the lawsuit baseless saying there is nothing misleading about naked juice products. amazon is cracking down on fake reviews. the company fears consumers can no longer tell the difference between legitimate reviews and those reviewers who are paid to

a lane of train cars hauling flammable material is sitting there stuck in the north bay because of a squabble between a local agency and the railroad. >> yeah. those rail cars are stranded right now in sonoma county. american canyon and shellville. that's where abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman is live for us today. wayne? >> reporter: well, it's fairly standard practice for a railroad freight company to park cars along tracks and wait for the companies that ordered those cars to have them deliver. they charge for storage and what about when the freight cars contain a hazard material or it's a neighborhood? that's the rub here in sonoma county. the view from outside of her home in shellville could definitely be better. the cows don't bother her but these parked railroad cars containing 2 million gallons of

liquefied petroleum gas do. they have been here for two weeks. >> like it's kind of scary because one time i thought i was seeing smoke coming out of them. >> reporter: the cars are owned by sonoma marin rail transit. smart trains don't run here. freight trains do, according to a lease agreement with the northwestern pacific railroad, and smart wants these cars out now. >> if anything would have happened with that much hazardous material, you can have many miles, many miles of sick disaster. that's what our board is worried about. the question does smart have jurisdiction to force compliance? mitch stogner who runs the state's north coastal railroad authority says smart is out of bounds. >> i think they are legally off base in the sense that freight trains are regulated by the federal government, plain and simple. >> reporter: now the two agencies are heading for a showdown with the federal government. smart is concerned about public safety around its tracks and the
