>> thanks for joining us. today's large marijuana bust was inside the area where the loma fire started. aches 7 news was there as law enforcement hauled out dozens of plants. the i-team first reported last week that the loma fire was likely sparked at the side of a marijuana farm. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen joins us live at the fire zone with the latest. >> and we're not too far from where that marijuana bust took place. we just received word that the man allegedly responsible for the marijuana grow operation has been booked into the santa clara county jail. here's a picture of him on your screen. his name is yariv dorr and according to the sheriff's office he's being charged with cultivation and possession of marijuana for sale. in the santa cruz mountains a large marijuana bust on loma prieta. today members of the santa clara county marijuana eradication team served a search warrant at

a house on chiquita road. this view from sky 7 shows a man in handcuffs. >> in many these operations a lot of this is very rudimentary so not up to code. >> on the property, two greenhouses still intact. a total of 89 plants recovered, some as tall as 12 feet weighing more than 40 pounds apiece. cash and scales as well as packaged marijuana were also found. the loma fire which was likely started by a marijuana grow has burned more than 4,400 acres in the past week and a half. investigators have stressed that this property is not where the fire started but say it is in the same area. firefighters say they are close to reaching full containment but still have a lot of work ahead of them. >> many of these operations could start a fire in any part in santa clara county so that's why we take these very seriously and why we partner with other agencies. >> reporter: a clear reminder of how the decisions of some can have a devastating impact on others. in santa clara county. chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> a big bust today in san

leandro netted five suspects and will have $2 million worth of marijuana. police released these photos of the plants. take a look. they say it was a major indoor marijuana grow. investigators are not releasing the location of the bust saying more arrests could be coming. just over a week ago san leandro police discovered another pot grow house and confiscated several hundred marijuana plants. a mother in concord says a man dressed as a clown tried to grab her child. police are investigating the woman's climb that while she was holding her 1-year-old dault they are afternoon a man in a costume tried to pull the daughter away from her. the woman kicked the clown who ran away apparently. schools nationwide, including here in the bay area are dealing with threats of scary clowns promising to show up on campus to attack kids. >> an east bay psychologist was arrested today for possession of child porn. investigators say they found a significant amount of porn on

computers at both the lafayette home and orenda office of 68-year-old kenneth breslin. breslin has been a psychologist for more than 30 years and has a practice called a child's point of view. developing news now in the southeast. preparations under way for hurricane matthew. evacuation orders are in effect now from florida all the way to the carolinas. the worry at this point is that this storm could lead to massive destruction not seen in the southeast since hurricane andrew 24 years ago. let's check in now with abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel tracking this storm. >> yeah, dap. live doppler 7, we'll show you where it is. it's crossing the bahamas, and it's still eyeing the florida coast line. let's get you in closer, a weaker storm. winds of 115 miles per hour. expected to strengthen tonight. here's a look at the watches, warnings and really much of the florida coastline is under a watch or a warning. this is where it is headed next, so here's the forecast track. a category 3 now expected to

strengthen to a category 4 very near the florida coastline tomorrow night. 135-mile-an-hour winds. you see it grazing the earthquake of florida friday night and then continuing parallel to the carolina coastline over the weekend eventually making a turn towards the northeast. it is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the coast there. a storm surge and surf is going to be a major problem. so if you're traveling there or you have family and friends there, this is a storm worth watching. kristen? >> sandhya, thank you. airlines are rapidly expanding change fee waivers as matthew looks like it limb pact the southeast. re-booking policies vary by carriers but cover airports from florida to the carolinas. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman is at sfo where, wayne, you spoke to travelers heading to the east coast. >> reporter: kristen, sfo today is an airport poised for problems. we haven't had them yet. we haven't had any cancellations yet, but that doesn't mean we

won't. the next flight to the areas that could be affected is a flight to fort lauderdale. that airport is closed right now. that flight leaves at 10:30. again no, cancellations today. could be a different story tomorrow. it's a thoroughly modern quandary this, a person can climb on to an airplane in perfect weather and in a few hours land in the path of an approaching hurricane and that's exactly what plane loads of passengers did and willingly. >> trying to get there ahead of it. >> reporter: today most flights into the path of hurricane matthew left on time but we still found trepidatious travelers. has your flight been cancelledle? >> no idea. >> reporter: that's rafael en route to brazil on miami on a flight leaving later tonight. he could not get an answer from his airline so he alternated watching screens, this one and then this one showing matthew closing in. so what you do? >> i don't know. i don't know >> reporter: and what do travelers expect or when they do

get home? >> just a lot of rain and a lot of people scared to drive. >> get heavy winds and trees over. the lasting effects are you lose power for several days. >> reporter: do you get the sense that they have seen all of this before? >> i think it's just part of life down there. they expect them and prepare for them. >> >> it's like earthquakes to california or tornadoes to minnesota. >> anything else we left off the list? >> i can't think of any. >> reporter: and if you don't need to fly there, no worries. from sfo, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> on the subject of flying, a smoking samsung galaxy note 7 phone forced southwest airlines passengers to evacuate their plane today just before it pulled out of the gate in louisville. the smartphone was a replacement model deemed safe by samsung. its owner said he mothered it down and then put it in his pocket. it started smoking so he dropped it on the floor.

continue this dialogue. >> senator, you've whipped out that mexican thing. >> that max can thing. >> reporter: mike pence ignited a social media firestorm the moment he spoke those three words. the phrase quickly became a hashtag. >> i'm sure pence was referring to the mexican in a diminishing way. >> reporter: on twitter people posted pictures of their grandparents and wrote american citizens who paid taxes. this tweet says that mexican thing is my dad who served his country in vietnam. another wrote that mexican thing is when we vote. once pence said it someone immediately created that mexican thing.com. if you go there, it will direct you to hillary clinton's website. here's what pence said following that phrase. >> can you defend it? >> there are criminal aliens in this country, tim, who have come into this country illegally, who are perpetrating violence and taking american lives. >> you want to use a big brush?

this is fleet week and today a group of ma reasons and sailors visited patients at the v.a. hospital in palo alto, a visit that showed the true spirit of camaraderie. abc 7 news reporter vic lee has the story. >> perhaps the most moving visit of all, this one, a visit from several blue angels and marine corporal gonzalez who suffers from traumatic brain amnesia. today was a special day not only because of the visit. >> it's his birthday, you know. we get to be here, and -- and any time you can put a smile on somebody's face, especially when it's, you know, one of your own. >> reporter: corporal gonzalez lost years of memory after his car sdefnlt h car accident. his mother said the visit jolted his memory. >> it's refreshing. it's things that are showing his -- his recovery. >> reporter: this marine patriot missile partially paralyzed when his humvee rolled over during war exercises.

he's now suffered a stroke. the group of marines and sailors visited him as he was doing his rehab exercises at the hospital's trauma unit. we can't reveal his identity because he's still on active diet, but the young service members who spoke with him said they were inspired by him. >> good to see a fellow marine who experienced a traumatic event and they still prove that they overcome adversity and it makes me feel i can do the same thing my level. >> and there was an encounter with donald "doc" barker. >> an honor to have you guys here. >> reporter: an 85-year-old korean war veteran, a volunteer at the hospital for the past 12 years. he was grateful. >> once you're in the military you develop that camaraderie and that never leaves you in your life throughout the years. >> reporter: visit was a testimonial to that motto semper if fi, a motto that means hauls

loyal. >> that's great. lots of love and admiration for a special marine ready to retire. >> hey, pascal. >> aches 7 news caught up with pascal at pier 39 tonight. he's an eight-year marine corps veteran who served as a patrol explosive dell textor dog. pascal is considered a hero canine making sure paths were safe for his comrades. >> without him i wouldn't be able to do my job. my job is to go out and look for explosive devices and make sure that everybody comes home and he owes the key tool that i accomplished that mission with. >> reporter: pascal will demonstrate his abilities at san francisco's dubose park saturday with other military dogs as part of fleet week. we now note extent of injuries suffered by a horse struck by a hit-and-run driver in konica costa county yesterday. 18-year-old chance suffered a full broken jaw when the horse trailer he was in was rear ended on kirker pass road.

the driver who hit that trailer left the scene in another car. chance's owner say the fracture section tensive and they say chance is in pain. he needs care from the vets at uk davis, but owners need to raise thousands for that to happen. we have a link to that gofundme on our website, abc7news.com. >> the story of a hospital charging a utah mother nearly $40 holding her baby has gone viral after the dad posted the bill online. ryan grassley said he posted the bill on reddit because he thought it was a funny, not to start a witchhunt against the hospital. the bill shows a $39.95 for skin-to-skin contact with their son after mom's c-section. the hospital says there was a charge for bring an extra nurse into the operating room so an infant may stay with its parents after surgery. >> i don't even know what to

say. >> all right. >> millions of americans who use pre-paid debit cards are often hit with huge fees. >> they are. >> the today the government are out sweeping new protections for the customers. >> "7 on your side's" michael finney is here. >> every couple of weeks new rules. millions of consumers, as you just said, who don't qualify for credit cards are using pre-paid cards to pay their bills. however, the cards come with an array of fees for services like activation, loading, balance inquiries and more. now the consumer financial protection bureau is restricting many of the charges. the new luls will cap fees at 25% of a customer's credit limit and will prevent overdraft fees and rate hikes for those who pay on time and consumers will be protected against fraudulent use of their cards. the rules will go into effect about a year from now. >> many airlines give you reward points for staying in select hotels and now two airlines will

do the same with airbnb steering business to the private home rentals. frequent flyer members can get one point for every dollar spent on an airbnb rental. and quantus is offering a similar day. and in u.s. currency it equals to about 77 cents. industry watchers expect other airlines to follow suit. now if your kids use fingerprints -- finger paints, i have an important warning. sergeant art is recalling nearly 3 million packages of finger paints and tempura paints. the injuries, i should say may be contaminated with a high level of bacteria. those germs are only dangerous to those with weak immune systemses.
