. now from abc news dbs 7 news. >> tracking hurricane matthew, just hours away from making landfall on the florida coast. tone, the national weather service says the effects of the storm will be unlike any hurricane in decades. thanks for joining us. >> matthew is slowing down tonight but the hurricane could bring devastating storm surges and flooding. >> we've seen heavy rains and strong winds. this is daytona beach, florida. notice the deserted streets. mandatory evacuations and a curfew are in effect. >> this was the scene in west palm beach, florida. strong winds knocked down a powerline creating dangerous sports as you can see. >> we have team coverage.

>> all of that in a moment. first let's go to meteorologist sandledy batell. the update on this storm just came down, right? >> it is. as you look at live doppler 7 right now, the storm is about 80 miles southeast of cape canaveral. it has weakened a little bit. take a look at did outer bands of rain, the heavy ebb rain beginning to move in over melbourne, fort pierce. here's the lightest stats on this. this is a dangerous category 3 with the 120-mile-an-hour winds. warnings are up along the eastern portion of florida, south carolina, georgia. tropical storm watches on the west side. and the wind gusts, vero beach now 71 miles an hour. the driving wind and drenching rains are only expected to get worse as the storm moves

onshore. landfall is expected 3:00 a.m. tomorrow as a cat 3. grazing georgia as a category 3 and then continuing along the south carolina coast, really it will veer back around over the weekend and coming back towards florida as a tropical storm. this could be potentially dangerous and devastating. biggest impacts, storm surge. isolated areas could see up to 15 inches of rain. there's a potential for isolated tornadoes. we've lar seen the wind damage. this is only going to continue to get worse. this is one that will likely go down in the history books. dan and kristin? >> thank you. andrew is expected to make landfall early tomorrow morning. >> let's go to abc news reporter lauren lister in new smyrna beach, florida. >> mast u heading straight for florida. the brutal wind and pounding rain growing as the hurricane charges towards the coast. the national weather service

saying matthew will be devastating, potentially unlike any hurricane in the modern era. florida's governor calling it a monster. >> unfortunately, this is going to kill people. >> the shore battered by damaging waves. the rain and wind ripping through the rej tags and the vacations of 3,000 tourists, unable to escape. with the hurricane then heading for florida, residents filling up the final sandbags. stores are boarded up. their shelves bayer. -- bare. the fight to get fuel. >> i saw two guys throwing punches. >> one and a half million people ordered to evacuate, jamming the roads but not flying. time lapsed radar showing the normally busy florida skies clearing out. nearly 4,000 flights with canceled over the next two days. a major concern here now, the storm surge. it's expected to be six to ten

hurricane matthew, continuing to push ever closer to florida. >> this could be really disastrous. meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking. >> dan and kristin, even though the hurricane is now a category 3 and the winds have tuchlt decreased, it is a potentially dangerous storm. live doppler 7 tracking the system. outer bands of rain, yellow, heavier bands of rain between melbourne and fort pierce. winds gusting from 50 to just over 70 miles an hour near vero beach. here in the bay area, it's a different story. take a look at the sunset from our east bay hills camera. clouds made for some beautiful hues here to the sunset tonight. tomorrow mortgage, it's going to be a similar view. when you get going. check identity the sunrise, especially if you're taking the ferry across the bay. should be a beautiful one.
