expected in the city this weekend. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristein sze. thanks for joining us. fleet week always brings in thousands of tourists and san francisco has increased the number of officers on patrol. more from along the embarcadero with why the extra manpower doesn't always work. >> reporter: yeah. it has gotten so bad here in san francisco that the city is thinking about requiring that rental car companies provide some kind of written disclosure for customers, for example, don't leave your valuables inside the car and look your vehicle. the family we interviewed this afternoon was unaware. >> we have passports. we have our bags and cell phones, cameras. >> reporter: in a matter of seconds this family's life visiting from china was turned upside down, a victim of a smash-and-grab incident near the crooked sectionch l cch -- sect

lombard street. >> we went for photos for five minutes and everything happened so far. >> up here on lombard street another window was broken into. >> reporter: community ambassadors who provide a safety presence say it's hard to keep this kind of crime away from these areas known for having tourists with expensive goods. the smash-and-grabs happen daily. >> on a bad day, like maybe five to ten. >> some tourists don't know how to protect their valuables. >> because we visit it this year because we're not really into knowing the rules in the city. >> this happened as thousands of people are here for fleet week. smpd says there will be more officers this weekend patrolling those sensitive areas. >> every officer is going to be working in the city, so you're going to see more of us out on patrol, on foot and on our bikes and on the motorcycles and out on the water. >> i've been here a lot of times. it's never happened before. it's the first time. i'm really shocked. >> in san francisco, lyanne

melendez, abc 7 news. san francisco police are investigating several violent cell phone robberies. they all happened on powell and market street between 6:30 and 8:30 last night. in one case a man punched a woman in the face and in another a man jumped out of a car and grabbed a woman's phone and the searching for an armed man and woman accused of stealing a woman's purse at gunpoint. just minutes ago sky 7 was over the sundale neighborhood where that search is happening. the robbery happened early this afternoon at warwick elementary. warwick and two other schools were on lockdown. all those lockdown orders have now been lifted. earlier this afternoon police arrested two others they saw were involved in the robbery at the scene of this car crash. the six men arrested for a string of home invasion robberies in the east bay made their first appearance in court today. these men are accused of targeting homes in livermore,

san ramon and fremont. cameras were not allowed in the courtroom and surveillance video taken in late august inside a home in fremont's mission hills areas shows these massed intruders at work. the suspects will be back in court tuesday for their arraignment and where they will hear the formal charges against them. now to breaking news. fire at a hospital in martinez. it's under control, but there are still concerns about keeping patients safe. several floors at the hospital are being affected. leslie brinkley is live in martinez with the very latest. leslie? >> 55 firefighters showed up here to fight a fire here at conia costa medical center and triggered fires alarms around 2:00 this afternoon and resulted in the evacuation of two floors of this knife-story hospital. the first floor, the second floor. critical to this is the second floor houses the operating

rooms, and from what i understand there were patients in surgery, two of them. they were able to finish the surgery and evacuate those patients up to the third floor to icu where they were stabilized. patients going into surgery were taken outside the hospital and a total of nine patients evacuated along with staff. that included non-operational elevators in the hospital and patients jibd to me smelling smoke and one daughter was out for surgery and they had to get dressed and back out the door again because of the fire. the hospital is not taking any ambulance traffic at this hour telling people not to come to the hospital. they are not accepting any patients and diverting them to other hospitals. operational but not accepting other patients here. i also spoke with the contra

costa fire protection district and fire marshal who said a diesel leak in the pooler room fueled this fire creating more smoke and problems in the hospital. they have been able to confine the damage to just one boiler in that boiler room. right now they are checking lines. they are testing them. the medical gas lines for things like nitrous oxide to see if they can give the green light to the hospital and becoming more operational again and reopening the first and second floor. right now they don't know if that's possible. they are assessing things and those patients are still -- the staff as well is still evacuated up to the third floor. reporting live in martinez, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. happening now. hurricane matthew is spinning towards georgia and the carolinas after crashing into the florida coast overnight. >> yeah. here's a live look at the wind and heavy rain hitting charleston, south carolina right now. matthew is expected to make land fall there later tonight.

the storm kill at least three people in florida adding to a death toll of at least 271 killed by the storm in haiti. local officials there expect that number will jump much higher as they get to remote ville sglajs more than a million customers lost power in florida. those who chose not to evacuate were left stranded by floodwaters. president obama has declared a state of emergency in florida, georgia and north and south carolina both. more than 4,200 flights have been cancelled nationwide including seven today at sfo. >> now the big concern now in florida is the heavy rain and, of course, the storm surge. swells of 9 to 11 feet are expected along the coastline. >> let's get to what's happening right now. abc 7 news reporter marci gonzalez joins us live from new smyrna beach. marci? >> reporter: kristen and dan, you can see a little bit of the damage that was left behind. the powerful winds from matthew knocked down a lot of trees and a lot of big branches like this one in front of me and a lot of

power lines which, of course, contributed to all of those power outages that you mentioned. more than had a million people in florida without power, including us right here running off of generators to come to you live, but the damage continues in florida. you talked about the storm surge and they are seeing a lot of that north of where we are. we're in central florida and up in jacksonville, a major issue with storm surge. the ocean actually reaching some of the dunes there and the water going several blocks impacting some homes in that area. just a bit south of jacksonville in st. augustine at a bed and breakfast, about 20 people reported being trapped inside because of the rising water. some of those people who didn't heed the warnings that were given about just how serious the flooding could be from this storm. they spent days telling people to get out of these areas prone to flooding and get out of coastal areas. a lot of people felt trapped and tonight a lot of people sense

time assessing the damage and looking over their homes. they suggested to people stay inside because we're having a little bit of wind and rain and waiting for this storm to completely clear the area before they go out and live in new smyrna beach, florida. marci gonzalez, abc 7 news. >> malt two looks quite intimidating from the international space station and nasa posted this video on youtube. >> they are tracking where matthew is right now. >> dan and kristen, right now on live doppler 7, latest from the national hurricane center, it's 55 miles east northeast of jacksonville, florida. that red there indicating a tornado watch box and isolated tornadoes not out of the question. this is a monster storm. take a look at it right now. here are the latest stats. it is weaker. category 2. winds of 110 miles per hour. warnings are up and tropical storm warnings and hurricane warning from florida to the carolinas, really in gentleman, so really keep this in mind. as you look at the forecast

track. category 2 continues up near charleston later on tonight as a cat two and continues to move out over the open atlantic, pounding parts of north carolina over the weekend and then it actually veers back around and it's much weaker as a storm as it comes back towards florida tuesday morning here's a look at the storm impact storm surge flooding. it's going tonight biggest concern along with isolated areas of up to 15 inches of rain in northeast florida to eastern north carolina. so a dangerous situation there still right now. kiss trend? >> sandhya, thank you. now a look at scientists flew into the eye of hurricane matthew. quite incredible here. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration pilots endured a turbulent flight until they reached the calm of the eyewall. pilots admit it the can be difficult to ignore the instinct to fly away from danger instead of straight into it. >> manage that turbulence? >> no. >> coming up, homes versus a

rivera joins us now with the story from the mission. >> reporter: yes, they gathered just behind me. from their perspective the city is dragging its feet with a number of open cases involving police shootings involving after cap american and latino men. >> where's the luxury for our children? >> reporter: gwen woods chokes up recalling how her 27-year-old son mario woods was shot by police in bay view last december. woods was a the shoog suspect. the victim's mother said what happened to her son was an execution. >> your city said guess what. you're an animal and you don't deserve it. >> reporter: police say woods was ordered to drop his five and refused. they fired several rounds. his mother's pain is shared by these other mothers of young black and latino men also is not and killed by police. their cases are still open with

lingering questions. they gathered on the steps of the hall of justice asking charges be brought against officers in wood's case. >> you need to come on out of that office and stop playing around and charge these police with the murder of mario woods. >> reporter: earlier in the day, a legal step forward for another bay-area family. >> we filed a federal civil rights lawsuit today in order to bring the family the justice that it deserves. >> six months ago lieu ice gongora was shot. his attorney say he was sitting against a wall. he charged at them with a knife while under the influence of meth and his body was riddled full of bullets. >> we intend to not only uncover the facts but to make the facts available to the public. >> back at the half justice protesters took their cries inside demanding a meeting with district attorney george gascon.
