good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. thanks so much for joining us. it is saturday, october 8th. i am chris nguyen. let's start with the forecast. here's lisa argen, tracking live doppler 7. >> hey, chris, you can see no fog to speak of at all. plenty of sunshine. as a result, temperatures have cooled considerably. and numbers have dropped into the 40s from the coast to our inland east bay. right in the middle is oakland and san jose, mid and upper 50s. look at this beautiful shot of the peninsula, 50 in nevada, 53 in con card and hurricane matthew, category 1, lashing the coast of georgia and the carolinas. we've had 12 inches of rain in savanna, now dealing with the storm surge.

and the latest radar shows a tornado warning for wilmington, north carolina, and myrtle beach, 60 mile an hour wind gusts sustained along the carolina coast. you can see the winds pushing that water along the coast. we'll talk more in detail about the hurricane and our weather coming up, chris. lisa, thank you. sad news to report. breaking news. abc 7 news has just learned the woman who was severely beaten do you remember a robbery last month in san jose died this morning. 88-year-old flo douglas suffered bleeding in her brain and eyes, after being kicked in the head in her home. sheriff's deputies say 19-year-old zachary kuin threatened to kill her if she didn't give him money. police say he will be charged with murder. 8:01 is the time. hurricane matthew, torrential

rain, hitting the coast this morning. 1 million people are without power in florida. abc 7 lauren lister has the latest on the storm. >> reporter: the deadly hurricane, reeking havoc as it moves up the coast. overnight, matthew bringing deafening rain, storm surge and destruction to south carolina. flooding roads, downing trees, and driving cars off the road. an eerie light show as multiple light polls explode. it continues to show its force. states of emergency declared in georgia, south carolina, and north carolina. i just want to let you know, we are prepared, we are ready for it. we are ready for this turn of events. we didn't want it turn of events to occur, but we're ready for it. >> reporter: this, after pummelling florida. >> the wind was so strong. >> reporter: as it barrelled through home coast, a security

camera shows it rushing into a home. the hardest hit areas, flooding downtown streets. as matthew travels north, 26,000 people riding it out at shelters in the carolinas, while thousands are without power. in florida, more than one million people are without power. people are being told it could be a week before they get it back and the next 24 to 36 hours are crucial in georgia and carolina as it causing life threatening devastation. i'm lauren lyster, abc 7 news. you can download the app for push alerts. politics now before, donald trump is apologizing after lewd comments about women. so far, just about every key republican has denounced these

the election. >> it should be about the future of america. 11--year-old remarks, they shouldn't be. >> reporter: speaking at an event in san francisco, diane feinstein say they were awful. >> is this a 59-year-old man at the time saying those things. if you are ever going to be mature, you are mature at 59, i would think. >> reporter: at a roally in ohi, mike pence was asked about the latest scandal. he didn't respond to the questions. and in further fallout, paul ryan also denounced trump's comments, announced mike pence will be appearing with him at a wisconsin event instead of trump. the trump campaign says he'll be doing debate prep instead. sergio quintana, abc 7 news. several prominent republicans say there is no way they'll support a vote for trump. senator mark kirk called him a

mag malignant clown. hoffman has called for him to step aside and said his comments from deeply offensive. abc 7 political correspondent, carla says she believes it could impact the vote, especially among women. >> it's the women and the conservative evangelicals who are, a lot of them still on the fence in the final weeks, and these are the people that are going to decide this election one way or the other. this tape has got to give them pause about whether donald trump has the character and demeanor to be the president of the united states. >> just last week, former utah governor, john huntsman said he planned to vote for mr. trump, but yesterday he said the nominee should withdraw for the race. the second presidential debate is tomorrow night. we'll televise it right here on abc 7. coverage begins at 6:00.

in costra county county, fire investigators are looking into a three alarm fire at an apartment building, happening around 9:30 in concord. firefighters rescued a cat from one of the units. neighbors reported hearing ex employings. crews say propane tanks from a balcony where the fire started could have made pops that sounded like explosions. two people were treated for smoke inhalation, but did not have to go to the hospital. one man is dead after a double shooting in san francisco. sky 7 was over plymouth avenue and broad street in the inc. si -- ingleside. lots of people living in the sun set district saw a two alarm fire. take a look at this. san francisco firefighters posted this video, showing the smoke pouring from the back of the home near 21st avenue. sky 7 was over the area, minutes

later. three people were hurt. in the east bay, surgeries are being rescheduled after a fire forced patients out of hospital operating rooms. flames brought out inside a second story boiler room at the martinez health center yesterday afternoon. abc 7 katie yutas has more. it smelled like a gas or chemical smell. it started getting light hetded. >> reporter: light-headed. and then raised blood pressure, as people prepping for surgery evacuated the costra county martinez health center. >> we were on the second floor and she was getting her gown on and stuff and prepared and all that stuff and then the fire alarms went on. >> reporter: fire filled the boiler room in the middle of the hospital. >> you're always worried about particularly the smoke, and in this particular case, it was a fuel fed fire, meaning it was the boilers themselves are powered by natural gas and diesel fuel.

>> we had two patients in the operating room. they were able to finish the surgery. the patients recovered on the third floor instead of the second floor. >> reporter: as firefighters extinguished the fire, they went to other areas of the hospital. the building is constructed for emergencies. >> the smoke compartments and fire barriers are to hold a fire up to two hours. >> reporter: closed to emergency patients for more than four hours and diverted a.m. blanses -- ambulances. no one was injured. in martinez, katie yutas, abc 7 news. in fremont, police are still on a scaled back search for a woman this morning. sky 7 was over the search in the sundale neighborhood yesterday afternoon. the woman and three others are accused of stealing another person's purse, another woman's purse at gun point at warwick elementa elementary. three scores in the area were

action from east bay mud claiming the utility has failed to repair a landslide seven months ago and filed a lawsuit. laura anthony has the story you'll only see on abc 7 news. >> the fact of the matter is, that's got to be fixed. there is no ifs, ands or buts about it. >> reporter: residents say they've seen enough of this, a large landslide that happened seven months ago. it is on east bay mud property, and it hasn't been fixed since. >> the house hasn't been fixed. the hill hasn't been fixed. the rain is coming. >> reporter: tim alford and his family have no idea when they'll be able to move back into their home. is it frustrating? >> yes, frustrating, it's stressful. you know, three kids and a family, very fortunate and blessed that no one was injured. >> this is a lot of our possessions of the home. all stacked up. >> reporter: dennis martell's home is too dangerous to live in. a smaller slide in january

should have been a red flag for east bay mud. >> they had an outside geotech firm evaluate in january and that report indicated that if it continued to rain, the entire hillside was in jeopardy. >> reporter: we obtained a copy of the report, in it, the geotechnical expert warns, quote, additional and potentially more significant movements could occur if the landslide is not stabilized. two months later, the entire hillside gave way. >> the slide is a complicated one. >> reporter: -- >> what we have learned since march, it is a mapped naturally occurring historical slide area that were he dates the houses that are there. so what we've been doing right now is to monitor the slide to see if there is any movement, we'll continue to do that in the winter. >> they're walking away from us, and wish maybe we want to go away. we might. we just might slide all the way

down the hill. >> reporter: east bay mud has put plastic sheeting over the area, but no plans to perform any repairs any time soon. laura anthony, abc 7 news. now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning, update on hurricane matthew, category 1 with winds of 75 miles an hour, just made landfall along south carolina's coast. the flood threat continues with major flooding. these onshore winds hammering the coast of south carolina. savanna, they picked up a foot of rain. we're looking at 5 to 7 foot storm surge around charleston and continue to see very heavy rain. so the hurricane will hug the north carolina coast, and we'll be looking at north only heavy rain, but tornado warning here. it's been up all morning long from the outer islands and all of this here is really low country. so we're going to be looking at significant flooding and the track is to have this system

push out to sea by tomorrow. but now is when we get the rivers and streams all rising with heavy rain continuing, and high tide, 2:00 eastern time. we'll continue to watch it for you. we're looking at devastating conditions there. but back home, we don't have fog, we don't have wind. but we will cool temperatures. 40s on the coast, and a little haze. good reason, we're looking at a spare the air alert, 57 in san jose, mou mountain view, 55. 10 degrees above average. you should see mid 70s. 53 in con scorcord. we' we're warmer in napa. great beautiful weather for fleet week. high clouds tomorrow. fog returns tonight. cooler tomorrow. and with the spare the air

alert, the air quality will be improving with a slight onshore push late tonight, about 9:00 tonight, when we'll see the fog. also a beach hazard statement, four to five-foot waves along the coast, large breakers, but 80 degrees in san francisco. still 80s on the coast but we'll get the sea breeze and by tomorrow, the high, thin clouds, cooler numbers, about 71 for columbus day. warmer in inland east bay, 93 in livermore, 80 in the city, santa cruz, in the mid 8 0s. one week ahead, this is some rain we're forecasting into the sacramento valley, mountain snow, can't wait, right. but the seven-day forecast, mid 70s to mid 90s, warmest day out of the next seven. cooler tomorrow, more cool weather for columbus day. as we continue to cool the

winds. so the hurricane has passed south carolina, but we're still looking at 60 mile an hour wind gusts, with over a foot of rain, and now storm surge, five to seven feet, along with high tide. we're looking at significant flooding along the north and south carolina coastline, all day long. so although the storm has been downgraded to a category 1, it is still severe. lisa, thank you. the most popular state park in northern california is a little safer today, thanks in part to the abc 7 news i-team. reporter leslie brinkley has more on the details from mount diablo state park. >> reporter: on any given weekend day, 800 cyclists are trying to avoid each other on blind curves. more than 300 on the slopes to mount diablo. >> it is scary going up and down. scary watching them and on this road, narrow paths where the

cliff is right next to you. >> reporter: last year, abc 7 news investigated hundreds of collision here, pressure from the media, politicians and petition yielded results now, a year later. state funding added double striped roads, and 251 new warning signs. >> we're seeing a better driving behavior, where the cars are actually not passing on blind curves. >> i really do think the double yellow lines in particular have made an impact on drivers. i see them hesitate more. >> reporter: she collided with a car last year and badly scraped and broke her shoulder, but still rides up on diablo. accidents are declining. other cyclists aren't so optimistic. >> a close call almost every couple of weeks that somebody does something really stupid. >> reporter: more is coming in the next few weeks, with new bike turnouts. >> they allow a cyclist pedaling

uphill to allow a motorist to pass safely without driving into the wrong lane. >> reporter: all about attitude. sicyclists have to respect the >> chill out. give us a chance. >> reporter: leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. happening today, officials in santa clara county will hold a community meeting to provide loma fire victims with more information, it is 95% and holding at 4,500 acres. it has destroyed 12 homes and the fire has been burning for nearly two weeks. today's meeting will at loma ellen tree on summit road. starting at 10:00 this morning. new this morning, president obama hopes to continue strengthening the middle class. in his weekly address, the president talks about the wage growth over his eight years in office. he says thanks in part to the increase of the minimum wage, we've seen big boosts in income. significant progress, president

>> and i wouldn't bet on it being your last decade, but whatever it is, we're going to appreciate you every second we have. >> thank you very much. >> soskin has received what she calls a parade of awards, including a presidential coin from president obama. the coin replaces one stolen from her over the summer when she was attacked and robbed in her richmond home. drive through flu shots, all to do is show up, roll down your window and roll up your sleeves. doctors say it is important to get a flu shot now before the end of the month. that's when the flu virus could start to appear. happening today, 40,000 books will be given away to kids and teens in daly city. each of them can get up to ten books for free. the event is put on by first books, a nonprofit organization that aims to provide disadvantaged children with books they may not otherwise have access to. the give away starts at 9:00

street. >> we just went for photos, like five minutes. everything happened so fast. >> lombard street, there was another window broken into. >> reporter: the community ambassadors who provide a safety presence say it is hard to keep this kind of crime away from these areas known for having tourists with expensive goods. the smash and grabs happen daily. >> on a bad day, like maybe five to ten. >> reporter: some tourists don't know how to protect their valuables. >> we're visitors here so we're not really into knowing the rules in the city. >> reporter: this happened as thousands of people are here for fleet week. sfpd says there will be more officers this weekend, patrolling those sensitive areas. >> every officer is going to be working in the city, so you're going see more of us out on patrol, on foot, on our bikes, on the motorcycle, out on the water. >> i've been here a lot of times. it has never happened before.

morning, we still had 80 mile an hour wind gusts and lashing the carolina coast. we're looking at inland flooding now and last check of charleston, had sustained winds, 38 miles an hour and gusts still to 61 miles an hour. so it is the backside of this hurricane that really has the gusty winds. no trees, no friction here along the coast, so we're looking at lower pressure behind this system, and that's why we're getting the very, very gusty winds. it is a wall of water that continues to push inward. we're looking at double digit rainfall from georgia, south carolina, on top of a five to seven foot storm surge, and high tide. all within the next several hours. so this will continue to be the target area through the carolinas, tornado warnings here in north carolina, and then it continues to rainfall up through washington, d.c. as we look at the forecast track, it continues to move out to sea tomorrow. as for today, still very dicey, with a gusty winds, saturated

soil. they will assess the damage later today. here, quiet morning, 55 in mountain view, 57, san jose, good morning, san a little cooling at the coast, but it will be nice and warm today, with a blue skies, tomorrow we're looking at a few high clouds and cooler conditions as that on shore flow, beach hazard, four to five feet. it will be, oh, maybe five to eight degrees cooler tomorrow. 80 degrees in san francisco. 82 yesterday. so today, the warmer day and with a few highs, and the wind

shift, moving down four or five degrees just at the coast tomorrow. upper 80s, san daly city, north bay, look for 89, 83 vallejo, oakland, look at union city, 85. fremont, 86. head inland, low 90s. warmer than yesterday, and only going to last for a day. the accuweather seven-day forecast, cooling late today, fog returning, waking up to patchy fog tomorrow. columbus day should be comfortable and then by tuesday and wednesday, we're looking at mid 70s inland, 60s at the coast. chance of rain coming our way the end of the week. it looks more likely by next saturday, and that would really give us an about face from the
