clinton. he's been in a nose dive after lewd comments he made in 2005 became public. but tonight he fought back. we begin our team coverage from st. louis. >> good evening from washington university. if you were looking for fireworks, you got them. for two days donald trump has laid out his debate playbook making it clear that he thought that bill clinton was not only fair game but a critical part of this election. the key question is would trump hold his fire like in first debate? the answer came quickly and the personal attacks did not stop there. straight out of the gate, the tension was clear. no handshake between the two bitter rivals. donald trump under fire for that 2005 audio recording with his crude comments about women. >> this was locker room talk. i'm not proud of it. i apologized to my family. i apologized to the american people. >> hillary clinton with days to prep her response saying trump is not fit to be president. >> i think it's clear to anyone

who heard it that it represents exactly who he is. >> reporter: and then 15 minutes in, trump goes nuclear, accusing former president bill clinton of sexual misconduct. >> if you look at bill clinton, far worse. mine are words and his was action. >> reporter: hillary clinton not willing to engage. >> i am reminded of what my friend, michelle obama, advised us all. when they go low, you go high. >> reporter: the two candidates battled it out over clinton's e-mails and private server. >> it's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of donald trump is not in charge of the law in our country. >> because you'd be in jail. >> reporter: and trump defending himself against reports that he may have avoided federal taxes for nearly 18 years. >> did you use that $916 million loss to avoid paying personal federal income taxes? >> of course i do. of course i do. she complains that donald trump took advantage of the tax cut. why well didn't she change it?

why didn't you change it when you were senator? >> back to the battleground. hillary clinton campaigns in ohio while donald trump is next door in pennsylvania. but no doubt tonight's debate will loom large over the campaign trail. karen travers, abc news, st. louis. before the debate trucmp launched an offensive. he took the stage with several women who accused bill clinton of rape and sexual assault. >> mr. trump may have said some bad words, but bill clinton raped me and hillary clinton threatened me. i don't think there's any comparison. >> today's impromptu news conference comes after that taped conversation featuring trump emerge on friday. we continue our team coverage now on tonight's debate with reaction from young bay area voters. sergio quinn tad da is in our newsroom. what did you hear? >> this was an hour and a half

long slugfest that was unprecedented in many ways. likely the most brutal televised presidential debate we've seen. it was felt by everyone in the room at the watch party i was invited to in oakland. through most of the debate nearly everyone was shouting at the big screen or trying to figure out which direction the subject was going. to be clear, this is a roomful of people who either supported hillary clinton or bernie sanders in the democratic primaries so they likely weren't going to be swayed but they still were affected by the tenor of the debate. >> the lesson for me in this debate is be careful what you wish for. i think oftentimes we want to see a slugfest, we want to see them go after each other. tonight we got to see just how ugly that can be and it didn't taste good. >> donald trump tonight really needed to reassure the republican party that he could hold on with his fingernails to this nomination and somehow keep the party together going forward. i'm not sure he accomplished that tonight.

>> reporter: she says this was likely the worst week for trump's campaign after a bombshell video was released by "the washington post" on friday. in it he was heard making lewd comments about women. several key republicans have since called for him to step down and they've pulled their endorsements. it remains to be seen if tonight's debate has any effect on his campaign. live in the newsroom, i'm sergio quinta quintana. the gop base he needs to remain on his side, did he say enough tonight to keep their support? live in menlo park with that part of the story. melanie? >> reporter: we did meet a couple of undecided voters here tonight. donald trump supporters told us that he still has their vote while some self-identified republicans told us trump never had their support to begin with. take a look at this viewing party. they were about 20 people here at this gop viewing party at a restaurant in menlo park

including san mateo young republicans. the crowd listened quietly and intently occasionally reacting as you see right there especially during statements regarding hillary clinton's e-mail server and those deleted e-mails. the big topic, of course, going into this debate was the leaked tape with statements that donald trump made about women in 2005. >> i felt if anyone was somehow shocked by these comments, i think people are naive. donald's character has always been kind of on his sleeve. >> i would really have liked to hear more issues actually addressed by both of the candidates. i felt like there was so much deviivisive rhetoric, a lot of political theatrics and kind of dodging questions. and i think the american people deserve to hear real views on real issues is. >> honestly, looking at the candidates, i'm looking at supreme court choices.

as someone who is more conservative, i want someone whose choices are going to be conservative judges on there protecting civil rights, gun rights. >> reporter: the question everyone seemed to like was the final debate question, what trait if any did each candidate appreciate in the other? clinton saying trump's children and trump calling clinton a fighter who doesn't quit. this was a positive question with a positive response that everyone seemed to appreciate after a contentious debate. live in menlo park, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. her running mate was in san francisco for a private event. virginia senator tim kaine flew into the bay area late this afternoon. cnn reports that he is now making most of the fund-raising appearances while clinton prepares for the debate. he headlined 42 events in september raising about $24 million. a reminder, the final presidential debate is scheduled

for wednesday, october 19th at the university of nevada in las vegas. you can see that on abc 7 starting at 6:00 p.m. other news, a sharp drop in temperatures this week. a preview of the forecast. >> we're just coming off of a weekend that was filled with sunshine and really warm temperatures. some spots nearly 20 degrees above their average for this time of the year. highs today you certainly felt a lot of 80s and 90s. 86 in san jose. a warm 90 in fairfield. san francisco up to 74 degrees. what you feel tomorrow as you step out the door, a much cooler monday as we get back to school and work for some. temperatures dropping some 14 to 16 degrees tomorrow afternoon from where we were today. 80s and 90s today. tomorrow all about 60s. more chances for wet weather over the next seven days. we'll talk about when you can

expect the first drops to fall and when these chances will stick around. tonight a bay area couple is trying to figure out what's next after they lost everything in a san francisco fire. sky 7 was over the scene after firefighters put out the flames on noriega stret they're days from becoming parents. >> to come home from work and have a house for my son. and i just -- it's traumatized me bad. i can't sleep. i can't think. >> reporter: rachel strobel stands with her boyfriend outside what was to be their new home. a fire damaged all their belongings inside. the couple is expecting a baby boy in january. >> it went so fast, and then i got worried because there's other people. and i panicked. i try to knock on people's doors and pull them out and help them.

>> reporter: friday evening just hours after moving into their new apartment on 22nd avenue and noriega street, a fire broke out in the unit below. she watched the smoke travel from that unit's kitchen to their own place. >> now we're homeless. we have a baby on the way. everything is destroyed and damaged. >> reporter: they lost everything including new clothes for their baby. miller and strobel do have some insurance, but finding a new place to live is the mine priority right now. the red cross put the couple up in a hotel for two nights, but by monday they have to be out. >> seriously, there's no words. we have a baby coming. there's nowhere to go. it's hard in the city to find a place. there's a gate with damaged belongings and appliances on the sidewalk. it took them six months to find this apartment. >> it's just devastating. >> reporter: everyone made it out alive. for that they're grateful. difficult to figure out how to start over again. in san francisco, loni rivera,

abc 7 news. a man in his 20s died following a shooting in san francisco yesterday afternoon at 6th and natoma streets. later that day two men were injured in bernal heights. police have made no arrests in either case. san francisco police are trying to figure out what made a pleasure boat to capsize tossing dozens of passengers into cold bay areas. a small child is still recovering in the hospital. abc 7 reporter cornell bernard has details. >> reporter: a san francisco police boat uses sonar to locate the wreckage of a 34-foot boat named khaleesi. it sank tossing 30 invited guests on board into the bay. >> all 30 persons were ejected into bay waters and were rescued. >> reporter: it was chaotic. watch as a man rescued a small

child from under the hull of the overturned vessel. five adults and three kids were sent to the hospital. the charter boat captain was first on the scene. >> just seeing a all the people in the water, that's devastating to us. we knew we had to jump into action. >> reporter: police now investigating if everyone on board had a required life vest. >> when the vessel is brought to the surface, then we'll look at the number of life jackets that are still on board the boat versus any that were recovered from the scene. >> reporter: the bigger question, what caused khaleesi to capsize? was this boat over capacity? >> that will be part of the investigation. >> but this charter boat crew member knew what he saw. >> i think it was overloaded. it was top heavy. a lot of people on a small boat. >> reporter: police say the boat's owner is cooperating with the investigation. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. we sent out a push alert for right after the rescue began. stay on top of this story and other breaking news.

palm springs police have identified the man aduzed of killing two police officers and wounding a third. the riverside county sheriff's department says he's 26-year-old john felix of palm springs. the police officers were responding to a domestic dispute when they were shot and killed through a closed front door. one officer just weeks from retiring, the other a new mom just back from maternity leave. here's abc news reporter greg lee. >> reporter: the memorial for two palm springs police officers quickly growing. people of all ages coming to show their support and to comfort each other while they mourn the loss of officers jose gil vega and lesley zerebny.

>> two officers are looking down on us from above. >> reporter: police arrested the man who shot and killed the officers. john felix. during a news conference today they explained some of their tactics in capturing him. >> we used a number of tools at our disposal to let him know that we were out there. so there was no mistaking that we were present. >> reporter: deputies say felix never responded so they used a chemical agent then nonlethal rounds. deputies say he was wearing soft body armor and carrying high capacity magazines. the district attorney plans to file first degree murder charges special circumstances which make him eligible for the death penalty. >> i consider a brutal murder of a police officer to be a very heinous crime. >> reporter: court records show his history with the law include an attempted murder charge and admitting to gang ties. >> he's not foreign to the justice system, that's for sure. but that stuff will come out.

>> reporter: the palm springs police chief providing good news, the third officer could be released today. he also shared a heartbreaking story about zerebny and her husband. >> in full riverside sheriff's uniform because he's a deputy sheriff, kissed her on the forehead for the last time. >> reporter: the chief thanking the community for its massive show of support hoping it continues to get them through a tough time. >> you're going to witness firsthand how this community is like no place else. >> reporter: in palm springs, greg lee, abc 7 news. look at what hapened in the east bay. this suv crashed right into a house in oakland. this happened off i-880, the high street exit. that's apparently the wall into the home's kitchen. police say the driver did stay at the scene and no one was serious lly injured. apparently this is the second time a car has crashed into the home in the past few months. a great weekend to watch the blue angels in our blue skies. >> you can put away your tank

top, your shorts, we'll break out the sweaters and the jeans. temperatures will go back to where they should be for this time in october. we'll track even some rain chances coming up later in the week. live dop her 7 showing you if you're a fan of the fog we've got good news for you. live pictures showing carl making his presence known lingering over san francisco and the fog will spread around the bay tonight issuing those changes that are coming the next couple of days. right now current temperatures where we have the fog like half moon bay in san francisco and november atto, 60s and 70s away from the marine layer. we'll all drop into the 50s. get you out the door. tomorrow morning partly sunny skies. starting temperatures, upper 40s to mid-50s. with that fair amount of cloud cover, that means we're in store for a cooler afternoon.

by 3:00, mainly sunny skies. but you notice temperatures about 10 to 16 degrees cooler than we were today. high of 62 tomorrow in san francisco. a cool high compared to the 81 you're at. 79 for san jose. 72 vallejo. and we've got game three. the cubs are back in town. first pitch 6:38 p.m. it will be a cool evening. that fog will start in. by 10:00 we'll drop to a temperature right around 55 degrees. then our rain chances do increase greatly especially into friday. we stay dry through wednesday, perhaps a shower on thursday but it's really friday that we have the greatest chance across the bay area to see wet weather. we bring back the storm impact scale. if you're new to this, we rank our storms 1 to 5, 1 is light, 5 is the most severe we could have. the one coming on friday does look like a 1 on the scale.

the rain starts in the north bay, will spread south throughout the day on friday. looks like the heaviest will be in the morning and then it tapers to afternoon showers. it does show you a pretty decent storm in terms of october standard. could be a widespread quarter of an inch around the bay area. that does include the south bay. the north bay likely to see the highs mount as the rain will start there and linger the longest. this is still five days out. the amount of rain you could potentially see. you want to stay up dated with the forecast, and the way to do that will be the abc 7 news app. tomorrow columbus day. you have the day off? not a bad day. an autumn chill on wednesday. thursday a chance in the north bay of a sprinkle. but friday looks like everyone has a chance with showers. a one on the impact scale.

the next step in the next step to build this stadium for them. nevada lawmakers will begin a special session to look at whether $750 million in taxpayer money should go to build that stadium. the money would come from a higher hotel tax. if the plan is approved nfl owners would need to okay it. raiders owner mark davis says if both those things happen he will

move the team. this year marks the 25th year since a firestorm moved through the east bay hills killing 25 people. the unveiling of a plaque commemorating those lives lost. the fire started in the berkeley hills on october 19th, 1991 and swept through the oakland hills. it destroyed 3,000 homes with an economic loss of $1.5 billion. >> we're all here to remember the incredible loss but celebrate the incredible resilience that this community demonstrated and continues to demonstrate. >> firefighters read the names of the victims with the ringing of a bell. another half hour of this special edition of abc 7 news at 9:00 is next. we'll have more on tonight's bitter debate between hillary clinton and donald trump. and for some parts of the southeast, the threat of

live, where you live, this is abc 7 news. now the breaking news from san francisco in the second half hour of this special edition of abc 7 news. police were hunting for clues and a gunman after a teenaged boy was shot. you can see officers searching for the suspect near the parking garage at st. luke's hospital. the shooting happened a few block waes near 26th and valencia streets just after 6:30 this evening. paramedics rushed the boy to the hospital and he suffered nonlife threatening injuries. now to hurricane matthew. the storm is downgraded and out at sea but the barrier islands off the coast of georgia remain under a mandatory evacuation order tonight.

>> matthew's final punch bashing the coast with a last dose of wind, rain and fire. this house engulfed in hatteras. the rain swarming fayetteville, a third of its annual rain falling in hours. >> our state is facing major destruction and, sadly, loss of life. >> this storm has claimed at least 20 lives. in north carolina over a thousand water rescues. the water covering a canyon into the road. as rescuers approach notice that bundle under her arm. it's her baby. scooped to safety by rescuers. in so many other parts of north carolina it was the rain that created all of that flooding, but here along the coastal communities, it's that wind pushing that storm surge on to land creating a water world in every direction. millions without power across the south. the howling storm blowing transformers and ripping down power lines in a flood-battered

charleston. in florida they're still assessing the damage after matthew rakd past it. >> the waves were so big they came up crashing over this storm wall pushing these boulders all through this neighborhood. the road behind me completely gone. >> in nagsville we met blake smith. and accompanied him to salvage what was left for his home. >> i feel like i can't collect my thoughts. my mind's kind of racing. >> that was matt gutman report. now to tonight's second presidential debate. donald trump took a scorched earth approach as he tried to get his faltering campaign back on track. he lashed out at hillary clinton even threatening her with imprisonment if he wins the general election.

>> reporter: straight out of the gate the tension was clear. donald trump and hillary clinton walking out on that stage not even shaking hands. just standing next to each other. donald trump has been under fire for days about that 2005 audio recording with his crude comments about women. he said it was just locker room talk and he respects women. hillary clinton has had two days to prepare her response. sme said anybody that watched that or heard that audio knew that was the real donald trump. and then donald trump just a few moments into the debate essentially going nuclear, doing what he teased for the last two days that he would do, bringing up bill clinton's past, accusing him of sexual misconduct. hillary clinton also knew this was coming because donald trump had flat-out for two days said it was coming. he didn't take the bait. she cited what she said was her good friend michelle obama who said when they go low, we go high, ending the discussion on

that and did not weigh in on any of the specific allegations trump was making. >> but the debate ended on a positive note with a great question at the end. tell us more about that. >> you got to love those questions that come at end like that. that seem so simple but actually get an interesting response. the questioner asked the candidates to say something positive, something they respect about their opponent. hillary clinton said she respects donald trump for his children and donald trump says hillary clinton is a fighter who does not quit. but eric, don't expect this to last. that was a very brief moment. and tomorrow they're going to be back at it out there in the battleground states. hillary clinton is campaigning in ohio. donald trump is right next door in pennsylvania. you can bet that all of the personal attacks from tonight will be looming very large out there on the campaign trail. >> the faithful on both sides are already locked into what they were going to do.

this is the bhalgt attle for th undecideds. >> if you look at the performances tonight, donald trump stops the bleeding. he's had perhaps the worst two days of any presidential nominee in recent history. and you had republicans telling him to get out of the race, some elected officials withdrawing their pledged support for him. he stopped that tonight. i don't think you'll see tomorrow more members of congress coming out saying they demand he get out. he served his purpose tonight can but in terms of those undecided voters. he's steadily around 40% in all the national polls. he's not able to win with just that. >> abc's karen travers, thank you so much for joining us. back to the hurricane now for a moment. the first air lift flight of

relief materials for the victim of hurricane matthew in haiti has arrived. these are photos from the group usa. the nation has begun three days of formal national mourning. nearly 900 people have died including 13 killed by cholera. the u.s. is sending humanitarian aid. you're looking at some of your bay area neighbors. red cross volunteers heading out to help relief efforts. they shared these pictures with us. those volunteers will spend between three and four weeks helping people recover from hurricane matthew. drew tuma has been keeping a close eye on the hurricane from the beginning. >> the good news is the storm is pulling away from the united states, but the bad news it's left a lot of water in its wake. live doppler 7 showing you the

storm that's hugging the coast is now pulling away. the national hurricane center has issued its last advisory on matthew. effectively saying it is dead. but you look at the past 48 hours and the rainfall has been record breaking. there's been over a foot of rain in some parts of north carolina. that water has just receded. so much of the carolinas has drying out to do. the weak forecast will help rescue efforts get things back to normal around there. >> drew, thanks a lot. one man used the storm surge to do some water skiing in north carolina's outer banks. this video shot in kill devil hills shows a resident water skiing on one of the town's main streets behind a truck. when we come back, new reports of samsung's replacement phones catching fire. one carrier says it is suspending sale.

a class action lawsuit against apple is expanding. the website apple insider reports that four law firms are now participating in a class action suit that accusing apple of failing to acknowledge or perform repairs for the so-called touch disease. their phones have suffered a loss of touch sensitivity. the lawsuit claims 10,000 people have contactsed him. samsung has suspended production of their galaxy 7 phones. there are reports of replacement phones igniting. >> reporter: tonight new problems pouring in.

owners complain samsung galaxy note 7 replacement phones went up in smoke. aeb zeus says she was holding hers when it melted down. >> pulled it up, saw smoke, threw it on the floor. >> reporter: this man in kentucky says he woke to a smoke-filled rom, his phone engulfed in flames. >> look over and my phone's on fire. >> reporter: just this morning a virginia man claiming his galaxy note 7 caught fire while he was sleeping. the owners of all three phones including a fourth that burned through the carpet on a southwest flight last week were part of a recall. tonight samsung tells abc news they're working diligently to see if a safety problem exists. that was rebecca jarvis reporting. tonight t-mobile announced it is suspending all sales is of the note 7 as well. customers can bring in their

some people were pleased to find it by accident. >> we were here on a pokemon hunt. but to be able to she him a tribute to our military up in the sky, can't do better than that. >> fleet week honors the men and women in the armed forces. it continues tomorrow with ship tours starting at 9:00 in the morning. you're looking at a raptor moments after it made a satisfy but unscheduled landing at oakland airport. firefighterers tweeted this photo after they responded to ensure that everything was okay. they took this closer look at the fighter jets as the pilots prepare to take part in fleet week festivities yesterday. you can check out all the highlights of san francisco's fleet week. we have photo galleries on the abc 7 news app of both the air show and the parade of ships. abc 7 news was in san francisco's north beach for the 148th annual italian heritage parade. it's one of the oldest

celebrations of italian americans established in 1868. it is also dubbed the longest running of its kind in the nation. the bay area's chinese community and friends paid tribute to loved ones at the annual festival. abc 7 news was in hayward at the chapel of the chimes for the ancient ritual that takes place in the ninth day of the ninth month in the chinese lunar calendar. they dance with the lions which scare away bad spirits. >> each year we feel honored and privileged to be able to host this because we know the significance of what it brings to the community. >> attendees are also blessed by buddhist and taoist monks. one more check on the weather. >> beautiful weekend. lots of sunshine, warm temperatures. but look what's changing our

forecast. the exploratorium camera showing you the fog is creeping on san francisco. and the fog is just an indication of the changes that are under way in the next 24 hours. we have that fog in san francisco, we drop into the 50s. 52 half moon bay. but away from the fog we're still holding mainly in the 60s and low 70s. san jose outside it is mild. tomorrow what you will notice, it is much cooler tomorrow afternoon than we were over the weekend by some 15 degrees in spots. 79 the high in san jose, 62 in san francisco. about 75 the high in napa. then we'll track rain. the rain coming on friday. it's a wonderful light storm. the rain starts in the north bay and spreads to the south. the heaviest occurring in the morning hours, tapering in the afternoon. we just got the latest guidance in about 20 minutes ago. it's actually upping our rain
