thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm dan ashley. >> a witness called police reporting several gunshots. here's what we know. students were just being dismissed from the june jordan school for equity in the excelsior district when it happened. >> you can see a map that have area right there. we can tell you it's at la grand avenue and brazil avenue. we do have live team coverage for you. we have vic lee at the hospital, but abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow is live outside june jordan but we'll go first to vic lee. vic? >> well, details of the shooting are still sketchy. we're still receiving information bit by bit. i'm here at the hospital. as you said, we have another reporter at the school. here at san francisco general we have seen family members of both of the victims enter the hospital and a rush, of course, trying to see what they can find out about their family members who were shot. the first group that came in here, family members of the 16-year-old boy who was shot, we

spoke briefly with a woman who identified herself as the boy's eldest sister and she told us that he was thank god in stable condition but that's all she knew. the next group came in here apparently members of the family of the young girl. now a man told us he was her uncle and that she was 15 years old. he also did not have much information and, again, he did know she was stable. family members are here at the hospital. boast young victims have been taken here and are obviously under treatment for gunshot wounds, but they are reported to be in stable condition. back to you. >> all right, vic, thank you so much. melanie woodrow is still gathering information at the scene and we'll go to her after she's able to get more information for us. we did send out a push alert on the story and get more alerts from the abc 7 news app. download the app for free and

enable the bush alerts. >> fremont police have made an arrest in connection with 16 arson fires. cory minhas has been arrested and was taken into custody near the site of the most recent fire in the city's warm springs neighborhood which happened last thursday. the video you're looking at is from the 15th fire deliberately set in the bushes along warm springs boulevard. the majority fires have been limited to garbage, small bushes, dumpsters and trees. berkeley police are investigating two claims of sexual assault reported on the same night, bolt involving fraternity houses. now students at uc berkeley are being warned to take precautions for personal safety. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez is live at cal with the details. >> reporter: well, we want to make it very clear that the assaults occurred off campus which is why the berkeley police department is involved and not university police. now i spoke to many students

today, and they told me that these kinds of cases have definitely changed the culture here at cal. both female students reported the separate incidents early sunday morning after attending parties at two uc berkeley fraternities the night before. >> we responded to the scene and we collected and processed evidence and the investigations are ongoing. >> one of the fraternities is located on the 2300 block of piedmont avenue known as fraternity row. the other is located on the 2400 block of prospect avenue. today many students were aware of the alleged assaults. >> there was just very shocking that some place like uc berkeley would have that going on. >> reporter: while police have yet to arrest anyone they are taking the matter very seriously. one of the women report knowing the person who assaulted her, and 80% of these cases are perpetrated by someone they know but the second woman was not familiar with the person who assaulted her. >> i think any time where college students are in -- in a

lot of cases drinking more alcohol than they probably should, going out without a plan, maybe not looking out for their friends, there's the potential that this could happen. >> reporter: students at cal are given a safety orientation and the prevention message is constantly enforced. >> they are really adamant about like what consent was and like what certain situations consent could be given and things like that. >> my study groups are at night so we walk together, like uber together, just like to be safe and with all this crime around. it's just crazy. >> reporter: according to police on some campuses sexual assault numbers are going up, only because more people are reporting them. at uc berkeley, lyanne me lend eds, abc 7 news. santa rosa police are looking for a suspect in a violent sexual assault. a woman in her 30s told police that show was attacked as she walked north on mend sceno avenue near santa rosa high school about 10:15 on saturday night. she says the man came up to her from behind, picked her up and threw her into the bushes.

she was able to get away after about a minute and called for help. police would like to speak with anyone who may have been in the area at the time. perhaps they saw or heard something. a man is being treated for severe burnts following a single-car crash this afternoon. here's a look from sky 7 and it's in a dry creek bed there. the crash sparked had a small grass fire. no other injuries are being reported. this accident happened on canyon road between constance place and pinehurst road. we now know the name of the man killed in a deadly hit and run in san leandro. he's takeshi watanabe. police say he leaves behind a wife and kids. >> he was a father. he was a husband. he was a co-work err, and he was a friend. >> abc 7 news reporter elissa harrington explain, watanabe was

trying to protect his company when he was killed. >> reporter: police say 54-year-old takeshi watanabe was trying to do the right thing when he was killed. the longtime san leandro resident worked at true world foods for 23 years. he died while confronting a man stealing palettes in the warninging lot. witnesses told police he banged his fists on the hood of the truck to stop the driver who ran him over instead. later 27-year-old kadeem edwards was found near a recycle yard in east oakland. >> mr. edwards got out before he started to casually walk away and once the officers got out of the car they found hymn him hiding underneath a parked gar. you can make up to $5 for one wooden palette. i stopped by his apartment and his wife did not want to talk. co-workers policed flowers in the parking lot where he lost

his life. we offer our condolences to the loss of a resident of our fine city. very, very tough time. >> friends remember watanabe as a father and church leader. edwards is being held at the santa rita james on no bail. he's expected in court thursday. elissa harrington, abc 7 news. let's go back to the breaking news and a shotgun near a high school in san francisco's excelsior district of the melanie woodrow is live outside june jordan high school. we havy in details. just learned from san francisco unified school district three students were hurt with one of the injuries and three of the students were targeted by outsiders. we have individual over june

the judge in the brock turner case is back in the crosshairs. judge aaron persky is being criticized for approving a plea deal that gave less jail time in a domestic abuse case in exchange for community service and violence classes. abc 7 news reporter david louie is live at palo alto superior court with details of a sentence that backfired. david? >> reporter: dan, judge persky agreed to a deal giving that san mateo -- college of san mato student less jail time in order to help along with his rehabilitation. however, the student, keenan smith, failed to comply, missing two weekend work sessions is, and now judge persky is under fire again. 20-year-old keenan smith shown here on the right could have been sentenced to a long jail term, but judge aaron persky

agreed with a plea deal knowledged by the prosecutor and his public defender. the deal traded jail time for community service and a 52-week series of domestic violence classes, but a judge today ordered smut to spend eight weekends in jail because he failed to appear twice for his weekend work duties. >> it will let mr. smith get the time done in a timely fashion. it will make it easier for him and then to start the domestic violence classes for the rehabilitation part of his sentence >> reporter: case is in the spotlight because of lawmaker michelle dawner who blames judge aaron persky for approving the plea deal that allowed mr. smith to continue playing football. >> judge persky clearly sent a message that football was more important than violence against women. >> reporter: however, the public defender representing keenan smith says dawner is wrong to point the finger at judge persky for the plea deal. >> when the defense and prosecution have an agreement it's very rare that a judge will

step in and what we call bust the plea because that will cause court congestion. >> reporter: professor dawber says it was ultimately judge dawber who had the ultimate responsibility to assure the sentence was fair. police say smith had knocked his girlfriend to the ground at this parking long and punched a bystander unconscious who tried to intervene. in palo alto, david louie, abc 7 news. san francisco may make a permanent withdrawal from wells fargo. abc 7 news was at city hall as john avalos introduced legislation that would end all of the city's financial dealings with the back. of aos says wells fargo cannot be trustd following this year's fraudulent account scandal. four years ago the city took away wells fargo's ability to manage the city's cash flow after a racial discrimination probe. >> wells fargo hasn't changed its ways. they keep trying to find whatever slippery way they can to cut corners to make money.

the resolution would also ask the district attorney to open a criminal investigation into former wells fargo show john stumpf. in a statement to abc 7 news, a wells fargo spokesperson says the bank is committed to what went wrong and restore the public trust. more troubles for samsung's galaxy note 7. three owners have filed a class action lawsuit in new jersey. they say the company took too long to roll out its first recall over the exploding phones. meanwhile german airline carrier lufthansa today been aed the phone from all of its flights. previously it had only banned the phones on flights to and from the u.s. >> despite the approximate a lot of people like samsung phones, especially the galaxy s7 when compared to the iphone 7. >> so problems notwithstanding, which one is better? 7 on your side's michael finney has a little insight on that. >> yeah. we took a look at both of them is what we did in the smartphone wars, two biggest players are
