6:00. fire crews blasted water on this vehicle from all sides for well over an hour, trying to get the flames out. >> and look at the results. the fire came at the worst possible time for commuters, creating a huge backup during the afternoon rush hour. people got out of their cars. you see it there to watch the flames. >> they were sending videos to us. lisa is live now along highway 101 with the story. lisa? >> reporter: larry, the rv was just over there a few feet from the holly street exit. it's since been towed away, but this was a major shutdown the last time that this specific portion of 101 was closed in both directions. that was back in 2007. sky 7 was above the chaos below on highway 101 where the rv burst into flames. it just so happens an ambulance was behind the motor home and noticed smoke coming from it. medics got the couple to pull

over and got them out just in time. >> we were taking precautions in case something was to explode that we didn't want to get anybody else in the middle. >> reporter: the couple told firefighters they had a 50-pound propane tank, as well as some five to ten-pound rockets inside. they were heading home to oregon from a canceled model rocket show in las vegas. as a result, firefighters were forced to attack the fire from a distance. >> when a propane tank is being impinged by fire, it causes the tank to relieve pressure, but the potential explosion can be large. >> reporter: the potential for danger was so high, the entire freeway was shut down, leaving drivers stuck in their cars for hours. 101 was a parking lot. some cars turned around, drivers got out and waited on the median barrier. motorcycles drove the wrong way out and city streets were gridlocked. >> it was confusing. it was ugly. people didn't know what to do,

because it happened so fast. plus, it's rush hour. >> we were trying to leave work around 4:30, yeah, around 4:30. and now it's 7:30. >> reporter: the shutdown caused problems for emergency personnel, too. it took the emergency crew 17 minutes to respond. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> quite the mess. we updated you throughout the afternoon on the rv fire with our push alerts from the "abc7 news" app. download the app for free and enable those push alerts to get breaking news as soon as it happens. another huge traffic headache today in san francisco, as police checked out what they thought was a bomb in a car. officers shut down both i-80 and highway 101. this is in the middle of the day. a note on a car that had been towed to a yard at 7th and brine street said there was an

explosive device inside the vehicle. police robots searched the vehicle, found nothing. police reopened the streets by the early afternoon. new at 11:00, a mother and three kids are hurt after a car accident in san ramone. "abc7 news" was there on tahiti drive. the minivan slammed nto a traffic pole. a 4-year-old boy has a skull fracture. a helicopter flew him to the children's hospital in oakland. a dog in the car was killed in that crash. more than 200 people flying back to the bay area from hawaii had a scare in the air. hawaiian airlines flight 44 had a hydraulic engine pump fail on the way back from honolulu. emergency crews set up by the runway, but pilots were able to land safely. now to breaking news in los angeles where flames are shooting out of a hillside home. it's happening just north of downtown l.a. one person is unaccounted for, and feared trapped inside.

more than 125 firefighters are fighting those flames. a 74-year-old woman suffered smoke inhalation and is in fair condition. tonight, we have new details on the shooting outside of a san francisco high school earlier this week. today, we told you two arrests have been made in the gang related shooting today. now, late tonight, sources say those arrested included the suspected shooter and a getaway driver. four students were injured in the shooting, including a 15-year-old girl. an oakland police officer is accused of paying a prostitute for sex and then tipping her off to police activity. officer ryan walterhouse was arrested when he showed up for work last night. he's facing two counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice, as well as a misdemeanor charge of engaging in prostitution. officials say this is not related to the ongoing sex scandal involving several law enforcement agent sis. but the woman at the center of that scandal has a new attorney.

she claims she had sex with numerous bay area police officers. some of those encounters took place while she was underage. and her attorney, pamela price, filed claims against several bay area cities, including oakland. tonight, she says she's no longer on the case. attorney john burress will now be representing her. new at 11:00, for the first time we're getting a look at the gun a man is accused of firing at a san francisco police officer, injuring him in the head. >> take a look at the revolver here. sfpd made this picture public tonight. leslie brinkley attended tonight's meeting and joins us live now from the newsroom. >> reporter: officer ken downs was moved into a physical therapy facility. he's still only in his 20s. he's paralyzed in his right leg, but is regaining feeling in his hand. police say it was a really close ball last friday night in a gun battle with a suspect. >> the bullet struck his head and fractured his skull, and within a centimeter or so of a

major artery. just a fraction of a centimeter difference could have been a much different outcome. >> reporter: 100 local residents came to express their sympathy at a town hall meeting. >> i feel really heart broken for the police. we would like to know what we can do for officer downs, cards, money, whatever. >> reporter: the shooting unfolded after a 911 call for help last friday evening described a mentally ill suspect threatening customers at a shopping center. police say pepper spray did not meer the him. he opened fire on police and ran into a park. >> he came out of the bushes firing at the officers. they returned fire and the subject went down. >> reporter: police fired 21 bullets at 26-year-old nicholas mcwarder. he was struck by four rounds and died. he was armed with this revolver. >> we're working in collaboration with the

keep the peace when he was assaulted. we spoke to his father and here is the story. katie? >> reporter: casey is a professional snowboarder. his dad told me he's healing every day. he was almost beat on the death on his own street after confronting some guys who were disturbing the neighborhood. >> his feet, his knees, his hands, his face, lacerations everywhere, the black eyes, fractured nose, fractured cheek, bruises all over his kidney and his back. >> reporter: dave pletz is grateful his son is alive. he went outside his house on pebble place last friday around midnight to tell some guys to be quiet. already neighbors had called police, saying they were screaming obscenities. before officers could get there, the men beat casey unconscious. jennifer schultzy said it was another neighbor who stopped the attack and saved casey's life. >> they were stomping on his head and kicking him in the

back. i firmly believe they would have killed him. >> reporter: police arrested four people. 19-year-old jordan manabusoon and two 17-year-olds. >> they're facing assault with deadly weapon and felony battery causing great bodily injury. >> reporter: a shocking crime in a neighborhood police say is safe. >> all he wanted to do was get them to leave. >> reporter: neighbors believe the suspects were using drugs or alcohol. police are still investigates. katie marzullo, "abc7 news." uc berkeley fraternities are calling off parties after recent sexual assaults. two wen claim they were attacked in separate incidents this past weekend at off-campus frat houses. police haven't made any arrests. the university said it's decided to voluntary suspend all social events while it re-evaluates the

average, san francisco 8 degrees above normal. san jose, a good nine degrees warmer where you should be. temperature trend for livermore, average high of 75 degrees. tomorrow, a little warmer than normal. notice the temperatures sliding as we head into the weekend and early next week, which is when we'll see changes. on the subject of warmth, let's talk about our upcoming winter. so noaa issued its winter outlook and it's basically saying that it's going to be warmer than normal this upcoming winter here in the bay area and much of the state for that matter. as far as rainfall, we have equal chances of seeing wetter than normal or drier than normal this winter. la nina is forecast between late fall and winter. right now the forecast is expected to be a weak la nina. but if the intensity changes, that could play a role in our rainfall. drier than average conditions are expected for southern california. so the drought conditions is

what noaa is saying. here's a look at the conditions. right now, inland east bay, looking at severe to extreme drought. and around parts of the bay and along the coast, we're in the dry to moderate category. it will take years before we erase the drought since we've done the damage over the last several years. look at this spectacular shot of the moon glistening over the bay. temperatures low to mid 60s. so mild and visibility is good and temperatures are primarily in the 50s. except concord, 61 degrees. san francisco is looking good. cooling friend starts tomorrow, below average temperatures this weekend with a chance of showers early next week. here is a look at your early morning commute planner. good conditions with bright skies, if you're doing the ferry ride. and if you are walking to work, it's still going to be good but on the cool side. so bundle up. temperatures upper forts to the
