leaving users frustrated and annoyed. >> the cyber attacks came in waves throughout the day and started on the east coast and hit the day on the west. homeland security is investigating. abc 7 news reporter david louie joins us live in san jose with more. david? >> reporter: larry and kristen, this really does underscore the vulnerability of the internet, especially as more and more devices are connected to the net. this is a heat map showing exactly what the -- how the outage happened in the country today. earlier today most of the east coast was in red because that's where it started because look now, this is the current time, california and the northwest is the area where the outage is now. i.t. engineer jeffrey fall quickly confirmed why users were having difficulty coming to twitter by sending a ping. www.twitter.com have no meaning to the internet because it can't resolve to an i.p. address, and so twitter is off. >> reporter: before day break a malicious attacked called a

ddos, called a dit service -- the attacker is unknown, although cyber security expert herbert lynn says many have the capability. anonymous is able to do this on the various organized criminal elements in operating out of various countries that are able to and nation of states could be doing this. a ddos is done by sending a malicious code to an smartphone or computer which uses that device to attack a server en masse. it could even be your home security system or other electronics connected to the internet. security cameras, consumer electronics devices that are in homes, really anything that are

smart and connected that has had a vulnerability or a weakness could be compromised and then become part of the attack. >> reporter: the white house says homeland security is trying to pinpoint the origin. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. a russian man has been indicted charged with hacking bay area companies linkedin, drop box and formspring. a federal grand jury in oakland alleges that in 2012iev gwen stefani nikolin legally or illegally accessed those company's computers, stole user information and sold it. athorts in the czech republic arrested nikolin on october 5th. the russian government is trying to block his extradition saying u.s. law enforcement is hunting russian citizens around the world. cupertino police are searching for the man who posed as an undercover officer and tried to lure a woman into his car. de anza college police say it happened in parking lot "a" near stevens creek boulevard and sterling road wednesday night. this is a sketch of the man.

take a look hand put that up for you right there. police say he told a female student she should not be walking alone and needed to get in the car or she would get a ticket. she was able to run to her own car and get away after another car drove between them. brisbane police released their final report on the mysterious murder of a woman whose torso was found in a suitcase near the dunnbarton bridge back in february. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at brisbane police department with more of what police are saying tonight. vic? >> reporter: well, larry, this is a murder mystery with so many twists and turns. unfortunately, the report from brisbane police does not have all of the answers. for example, they still don't know how she died or where she died and they believe that this was not premeditated murder, butty in don't explain why they feel that way. february 12th, the last day police believe shelly titchener

was alive and in the last recording to her husband paul who lived separately shelly sounded drunk, incoherent and angry. the next day paul creates a will. it says failure of this will to provide for shelly titchener is intentional. police say he transfers substantial amount of money to his son's accounts. february 15th, paul titchener reports to brisbane police his wife is missing and family members tell investigators his statements are inconsistent, appearing to hide something. police search the home and paul's business and their cars. two days later police discover a female torso along the shore line near the dunn barton bridge. days later a leg and shelly's purse, that night paul titchener jumps off the bay bridge, still a person of interest, not a shouldn't. fl

a pair of arms and a fingerprint found. police still have no cause of death. former sfpd homicide detective joe toomey says the missing part of her anatomy may answer that. >> you're missing the head. you know, did he knock her out? you know, we don't know. >> reporter: police also never found the crime scene, but police conclude paul titchener killed his wife. toomey wonders. >> if she died, how, fall, whatever, had had a heart attack, i don't know. >> reporter: police think motive was stressed caused by money problems and her alcohol abuse. vic lee, abc 7 news. san francisco police officer kevin downs is out of the hospital and in a physical therapy facility. downs was shot in the head and suffered a fractured skull last friday. the bullet narrowly missed a major artery. downs was shot after responding to the report of a man described

as mentally ill threatening people at lake shore shopping center. the family issued a statement today. the shot fractured kevin's skull and missed a main artery by less than a centimeter. the trauma currently leaves kevin paralyzed in his right leg. police say 26-year-old nicholas mcer when thor opened fire on officers and was later killed by return fire. san francisco police are searching for a man who was part of a drive-by shooting at third street and fitzgerald avenue. a police captain tweeted a picture of the victim's car. you can see bullet holes and the back window just shattered. the man is expected to survive. >> water, water everywhere and now for as many not a drop to drink. a break in the water main caused a huge mess in oakland today. happened just before 7:30 this morning in the diamond district. abc 7 news reporter wayne

of 2014, residents tell us. the time before that east bay mud is still not certain. >> we respond to between 800 and a thousand main breaks each year so remembering one main break can sometimes be difficult. >> reporter: east bay mud says the broken main was made of cast iron and almost 100 years old. it's exactly the kind of main the utility is replacing at a rate of 10 miles per year and this line was scheduled for next year. >> we need to replace this entire main. >> reporter: are you saying this main could break again tomorrow? >> it could happen tomorrow again. >> reporter: and that is what happens when a failing infrastructure comes home to rust. in hockey land, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. sky 7 was above an unusual accident in oakland today. a driver in his 90s became wedged underneath the tractor trailer in the montclair district. to get himself free he hit the gas pedal. the car shot forward and smashing through the front window of the shop and someone's in the kitchen. he tried to back out and became

stuck under the trailer once again. luckily no one was hurt. the store owner said the driver stopped by the doughnut shop next door every day to get his coffee. an inmate hunger strike at the santa clara county jail is now over. the decision follows a meeting today between strikers and jail officials. it's unclear what assurances if any the inmates were talley given. about 125 maximum security inmates stopped eating five days ago this. hover complaints about food, lack of clean clothing and commissary prices. the sheriff's association issued a statement agreeing with the inmates and blaming the sheriff laurie smith. >> coming up one by one, two oakland police officers appear in court as two different sex scandals smear the department. and somebody called the warriors cowards. klay thompson doesn't like it, but we're talking about political pressure now, and now klay thompson, people talking smack about the warriors. we'll hear what klay's response

two oakland police officers stood in court today and weren't on the job. both are accused of committing sex crimes. one was arrested this week and the other is accused in the ongoing prostitution scandal connected to one young woman. aches 7 news reporter laura anthony is live at the hall of justice. laura. >> reporter: well, kristen, we saw two oakland police officers both criminally charged but in two very different sets of circumstances. however, there's one disturbing theme. >> i like to be able to share my

story with you, but i've been advised by my lawyer not to make any statements at this time. >> reporter: this oakland police officer walked out of a hayward courtroom after pleading not guilty to a charge he had oral sex with an underaged prostitute. >> everybody thinks he's charged it and oh, my god, he must have done it. i can tell you here and now he never met her. he did not do what he's accused of. >> reporter: la verde is among seven officers from oakland and other agencies criminally charged with their interaction with jazz inaboulesin who used the name celeste guap. another oakland officer ryan walterhouse appeared in the same courthouse amounts after la verde. he was charged this week and charged with misdemeanor prostitution and felony obvious trucks. his case did not involve abuslin who is now represented by john birds. >> it's mind-boggling to think that an officer would engage in

this type of activity in the face of what just happened to six, seven, eight officers. >> reporter: the defense attorney represents both la verde and walterhouse who also entered a plea of not guilty. >> from the facts that i know now, we're heading to a trial, and we'll let a jury decide what the truth is. >> reporter: waterhouse already posted bail. la verde has until next week to do so. in hayward, laura anthony, abc 7 news. former california state senator ron calderon was sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison today for taking bribes in exchange for his influence in sacramento. calderon pleaded guilty to a single count of mail fraud in june. he also admitted soliciting more than 55,000 in payments for supporting or blocking lgislation. calderon must report to prison january 3rd. more hacked e-mails out today from wikileaks, and in one hillary clinton operatives are sparring over the role san francisco billionaire tom styier

the final preseason game tonight and the regular season with kevin durant starts on tuesday. hi there, everyone. another great looking day and we're seeing the changes. live doppler 7 showing the high clouds and the clouds will be replaced by much-needed rain. take a look. our drought continues. here's the latest. we still have severe to extreme drought in our inland and east bay and it's still pretty dry around the coast and the bay. southern california is even worse with exceptional to extreme drought, but up to our north we are seeing some signs of improvement. last week we got quite a bit of rain up in northern california and the largest area of drought-free conditions since march of 2013 across the northwestern portion of the state. so that's encouraging news. from our mt. tam cam you can see a few wispy clouds and temperatures 62 san francisco and 68 oakland. temperatures came down a few degrees in many areas. still a mild 74 in san jose.

half moon bay 78. i'll step aside so you can get a nice view from our south beach camera of the wispy clouds and just going to filter the sunshine this evening. mid to upper 70s. it's in the 80s and livermore and still feeling worm out there. looking at some fog which held the temperatures down along the coast. we had some upper 50s. a mixture of sun and clouds and we're looking at several rain chances. here's the hour by hour planner so mild conditions inland so 6:00 tonight if you're stepping out, just grab the jacket because it does get breezier later on and cooler at 10:00 p.m. and a mix of high clouds and fog as we head towards midnight. tomorrow morning we'll see clouds in the highs in the 70s. 73 in san joseph and 71 in sunnyvale and peninsula upper

60s to low 70s. 63 pacifica and downtown san francisco sunshine and 66 degrees. north bay, a little more heavy cloud cover, but comfortable readings. low 70s and sacksa rosa, napa and the east bay. 69 oakland and inland areas, beautiful mild fall weather. you're looking at mid 70s and 7-4-degrees in livermore. now i'm going to take you down to avaya stadium for the light the night walk. if you're taking part in the walk, 64 degrees. at 9:00 p.m. it's 60 degrees so just comfortable weather. there's another walk in petaluma. if you're going there, also going to be a nice one, but a little breezy there. tracking showers, rain line to the north and monday evening it shifts southward which is why you need the abc 7 news app. tuesday looks like there's a pretty good chance of seeing showers here and the abc 7 news app will help you keep track of live doppler 7 and the rain.

these are photos from nasa's mars reconnaissance orbiter showing a black space where the space agency's craft possibly exploded. scientists say the data already sent back will still be helpful for that mission. the esa believes the probe suffered problems in its last 50 seconds descending through the harsh martian atmosphere. volunteers are helping nasa scientists locate spiders on mars. that's what they call the red planet's terrain features resembling the creepy craley kind, a little bit. these patterns form when ice layers closest to the crowned melt and send carbon dioxide and dust into the upper sheath. and three new crew members climbed aboard the international space station. nasa astronaut shane kimbro and two cosmonauts arrived after the
