4:00 pm
game end this way. >> ed: the purdue player was going in for the ball. it looked liken -- now they are going to throw another flag. looked like the offensive linemen were getting into it with the officials. >> ed: gates was upset because he was jumped on by panfil at the end there. >> mike: gates thought it was a cheap shot. >> ed: a guy with a really high upside. coaches think highly of him. just a sophomore. that was the finish of a play. gates goes to pull him off of the pile. they threw another flag. >> referee: we have multiple fouls on the play.
4:01 pm
personal foul, offense. personal foul, defense. after the play unsportsmanlike conduct offense number 68. 15-yard penalty. third down. >> ed: gates continued to jaw and was called for the personal foul. the referee there wisely not using numbers there on the first time around saying that one does not count. i can see where gates got upset. he saw his pal being slammed to the ground. it was after. >> mike: basically the first two penalties offset each other. the late penalty is assessed. >> ed: yeah. >> mike: let's just let the clock run and get out of here. play counted. third down and 18.
4:02 pm
i don't think nebraska cares about the yardage. >> ed: you know, it is enough time if you are nebraska. i know you are up by two scores. this is enough time for you to think that okay, we have to burn more of this clock off before we are go to give the ball back. >> mike: purdue is out of time-outs. >> ed: you have to think on third down it will be a terrell newby run. >> mike: 34 gets it. watch the clock tick. >> ed: you will be under a minute left. pretty safe for nebraska. the only thing that could be a disaster if newby or whatever they let carry the ball fumbles. >> mike: they will have to punt it with around 50 seconds left to go on the clock.
4:03 pm
>> ed: for tommy armstrong, one of the top quarterbacks in the history of the program. he will keep your heart in your throats if you are a nebraska fan. as talented as he is, he will occasionally fall back and heave it up to the other team. we saw that interception in the first half to keep things competitive for purdue. feel like you should add something there. in tommy we kind of trust. >> mike: newby. lowers his shoulder. plows in to the center of the line. >> ed: for purdue this has to be
4:04 pm
a painful 1:30. they came in here, down 7-0 in the first 16 seconds of the game. gerad parker took over for darrell hazell. tried a halfback pass on the first play that was intercepted. tommy armstrong walked in and then all of a sudden the pass game for purdue showed up. >> mike: i know that everybody was thinking the same thing after the first 16 seconds, this could be 56-0. this could be an absolute disaster. you would not have blamed the players going in the tank after that. heck of a way to start on the road against undefeated number 8 but they sucked it up and played really hard. >> ed: after the interception blough ran up and down the sideline saying that we got this. he came out and delivered. he really played well. and this is just a sophomore. again, darrell hazell is gone as the head coach.
4:05 pm
>> mike: is this a five minute time-out or am i missing something? >> ed: well, i think that nebraska took their time-out there. >> ed: the referee. told nebraska to get out here and play some ball. that was great. >> mike: he has got a dinner reservation. lightbourn's job is to kick it as fast as he can. they got a piece of it. >> ed: but not enough. wow. >> mike: that was so close to be a huge play. >> ed: wow. that is the third blocked punt. we saw one last week against
4:06 pm
indiana that was a safety and this has been an achilles heel. they are terrible in net punting, under 30 yards. >> mike: guess who, it was the big guy anthony neil. >> ed: he is trying to just get out of the way. did not even try to put his hands out to get that one. lightbourn, they are not calling running into the kicker because the ball was tipped. >> mike: 42 seconds left. that was the tight end hopkins and he couldn't hold on. they have a future with blough. this kid can play that. >> ed: nebraska continues to lumber on.
4:07 pm
it might not be the prettiest bandwagon. but they are on it. >> mike: marshall. i thought mike riley had a great answer when we asked are you the number eight team in the country. he said i don't know. we play who is on the schedule. so far we beat all of them. we will find out later. >> ed: he and his staff have been around for a while. you think about what they did at oregon state. ultra competitive. that ball is batted away. reilly is as nice of a person and optimistic as you can ever meet in this business. class and quality the whole way. >> ed: i will say the fan base here wasn't exactly over the
4:08 pm
moon when he was hired. the fan base was ready for a change. mike riley had a down year at oregon state the year before he was fired. wait a minute. you have a beaver that did not break .500 last year. they were not sure what they were getting. >> mike: dzuris dumps blough. purdue can't stop the clock anymore. mike riley and company will go to 7-0. >> ed: you know even at the start of last year with all of the heartbreak losses and a team that ended up sub .500 a lot of people were wondering if they hired the right guy. he seems ageless. he has got a great twinkle in his eye. he is a great recruiter there at
4:09 pm
nebraska. they can clearly coach. while he was at oregon state and most of the staff came with him. i think they feel better about the change to riley right about now. >> mike: yeah. 7-0 start. for the cornhuskers, another huge crowd here today, over 90,000 watched them win. once again the final score, nebraska 27, purdue 14. let's go down to jerry with mike riley. >> jerry: you told me you have to find a way to run the football. but it was the passing game that
4:10 pm
gave you the spark in the second half. how do you describe the play of your offense? >> sporadic, all over the place. we made plays when we absolutely had to have something going. when we had a scoring drive. but it was pretty sporadic. we did not have anything consistent. i thought that coach parker did a nice job of prepping that team to play today in a hard circumstance. right now we are glad to win. >> jerry: you are 7-0, given how sloppy off and on things happened today, what are your priorities and concerns as you try to get ready to play wisconsin? >> we always talk about winning the games. immediately when we do that, we have to go back to examine what it looked like. i really, really like this team a lot but we are not very pretty often enough. we are going to just try to get better. we have to go back and work.
4:11 pm
these kids are realistic, they will see it and we will go to work to do everything we can to get ready to beat wisconsin. >> jerry: coach, congratulations. >> mike: thank you jerry. thank you coach. >> ed: undefeated and not pretty is okay. >> mike: still undefeated isn't it? >> ed: yes, it is. >> mike: tonight at 8:00 eastern saturday night football as number 2 ohio state at penn state. so long from lincoln, nebraska. thanks for watching everyone.
