>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, october 23rd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist drew tuma in for lisa argen. >> good morning. we are watching our skies under partly cloudy conditions. but cool in some spots. in the 40s right now. live doppler 7 showing you a picture. you notice the high clouds screaming in from the southwest to the northeast. we are chilly. 46 novato, 47 napa. 59 at oakland. a little bit warmer around the immediate bay area and san jose currently 52 degrees. keeping track of temperatures shows you midday today maybe a little coastal fog but otherwise most spots for lunchtime warming into the 60s. and later this afternoon the

warmest locations inland >> new questions are being raised after the mass itch cyber attack on friday. hackers used devices us could have in your home to shut down the internet. it crippled several major websites and stewart experts say this could be just the beginning. a about. c7 news reporter tiffany wilson explains. >> household appliances used to launch an attack. cybersecurity expert said the internet of things is likely to be played again. >> we are seeing more and more texts exploiting these type of devices against targets. >> starting friday morning hackers transformed everything from baby monitors to vacuum cleaners into an army

overwhelming servers with phony requests. it's called a distributed denial of service attack and meant people couldn't watch netflix or use twitter. new world hackers claimed responsibility. >> the affect end companies lost money in customers. he said we should really be concerned about the riske to us individually. for example, he worries a hacker could blackmail you by threatening to turn the brakes off in your car or peering into your baby's monitor. >> every single one of those devices can become a little cannon. >> he estimates he has ten of those little cannons in his own home. >> that's pretty scary, for sure. i mean, i have cameras all around my house. >> there's no easy way to know if your devices were used in the web attack, but he said there is a simple solution to make your devices safer. >> every new device installed in the home, make sure the default password it came with in the box

gets changed so no one can hack into the device. >> a bit of homework to protect your home. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> the family of a young navy sea man who is looking for answers after she sudden isly died while at sea near japan. 23-year-old danyelle luckey recently enlisted as a way to travel the world, get an education and serve her country. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> we were just inseparable. >> she was my baby. i don't understand. it hurts. it hurts so bad. i just don't know what i am going to do without her. >> annette and darryl luckey are heartbroken. their daughter enlisted this the navy just five months ago. she passed boot camp with no problems and was on her first deployment aboard the uss ronald reagan when she suddenly died. the family was told she'd been

sick for a few days and may have died of cardiac arrest. >> when she left here she was standing tall and she was healthy. she comes back in a casket. >> the 23-year-old bay area woman's body was returned to the bay area thursday. one officer saluted luckey, who is considered a veteran. her family stood in silence, devastated. >> this really hurts and it's really sad to know we will never see her again. it really hurts a lot. >> autopsy results won't be in for another two months. of the pittsburgh native planned to one day return home and become a social worker to help troubled teenage girls. >> danyelle luckey's funeral will take place here wednesday morning. she will be buried with full military honors. in pittsburgh, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. members of the u.c. berkeley greek community met to discuss what changes needed to be made after recent allegations of sexual assault. two women were reportedly

assaulted at fraternity parties off-campus last weekend. in response, the greek system has chosen to suspend parties at both fraught tern tis and sore or tis. the group met yesterday to discuss their plans. on october fourth a person slammed into the back of a horse trailer and left the scene. the horse, had named chance, was initially not expected to survive. chance has recovered, but can never be ridden again. and an enormous tree crushed a man in his own backyard in san rafael.

he was gardening when it happened. leslie brinkley has more. >> reporter: this 75-foot tall eucalyptus tree cracked at the base of its trunk and top emnot on to the house but on to a man in his backyard watering and digging. the 911 call came in 3:30 in the afternoon. >> the owner of the property was found underneath the tree. >> pinned under the tree. >> pinned under the tree, unconscious. we were able to remove him from under the tree. attempted some efforts on scene but were not successful. >> shocked neighbors and friends came through the gated driveway in this steep be made. groves of eucalyptus trees are everywhere and in every yard. >> the eucalyptuses are among the biggest and we always look up at them and wonder but it's kind of terrifying that one could fall over and kill someone

like that. >> tom bair pointed out the leaning trees in his yard and one that came crashing down on his driveway during a winter rainstorm narrowly missing the cars. the fallen trees had started leaning toward their house the last few months. in san rafael, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. a high school football flavorer went to the hospital after getting a concussion during the game. it happened in san francisco at lincoln high school where the game was played yesterday. injured player was from the opposing team, galileo high school. they escorted him off the field and ambulance took him to the hospital as a precaution. student said seeing the injury shook them up. >> it's just a scary thing. even though it wasn't one of my players, it's sad to see another player down because they don't come out here wanting to get injured. >> witnesses say the boy was walking, talking and moving after the injury. the players finished out the

game. lincoln went on to win 21-18. the trip from the east bay to treasure island is a little safer and easier. the new on and off ramps opened up to drivers on the bay bridge yesterday. the biggest difference is that the exit is now on the right side of the bridge instead of the far left. the tight turns and quick merges are gone, as well. the project cost 9 the $8 million to complete. caltrans is scheduled to open the last part of the bay bridge to bike traffic today. the bike path will open at noon. the four and a half mile path on the eastern span will finally go all wait to the island. drivers will need to take a shuttle because the roads on the island are not considered safe for cyclists and pedestrian. and how will the weather be for those folks? >> they are going to like it. it will feel like fall.

[cheers and applause] >> the cubs have won the pennant! >> and a historic night in chicago. the cubs advance to their first world series since 1945. this was the jubilant crowd at wrigley field after the cubs beat the dodgers in game six of the national league championship series. the world series starts tuesday night in cleveland. shu will have all the highlights coming up in sports. here's a bit of per expectative about how long it's been since the team has been in the world series. color television did not yet exist. neither did credit cards. international air travel, the

nba be or even the states of adkins and hawaii. the cubs have also never played in a world series that was televised. hillary clinton's reaction to the cubs win perhaps says it all. look at her face. her traveling press secretary tweeted this photo of her watching the last outs of the game from her campaign plane. she's a huge cubs fan. she was born in chicago back in 1948, three years after the last time the cubs played in the world series. congratulations to the cubbies! telethon giants at&t announced it will buy time warner for $85 billion. it will bring together the company's wireless and pay television subscribers with time warner's media lineup like cnn, tnn, hbo and hollywood's biggest film studio, warner brothers.

the proposed deal is like toy to spur more consolidation among media companies. los angeles police are testing out an electric car that should have no problem keeping up in police pursuits. tesla is loaning a model s to the lapd for an entire year. the department will run it through a series of tests to determine how to make it an actual patrol vehicle some day. this one features police radios, a computer, a custody cage and a shotgun rack. not having to fill up on gas can save the department a lot of money. city leaders are confident that tesla is up to the job. >> we found the car that is very spacious inside. it has lots of technology and has the performance that can match any patrol car today. >> the department already has a fleet of 100bmwi-3 plug-in cars that are being used in nonemergency situations.

happening today, crewmembers who died in world war ii and the one marines they served on will be honored in a special ceremony. the island heritage trust will host their memorial event. 20 of the submarines went down along with 575 crew men on board. today there will be a memorial at mayor island in vallejo. an east bay teenager with a passion for halloween and helping others has scared up a new haunted house for a good cause. abc7 news was in roll ban -- albany for a behind the scenes tour of the broken spine mind. he created an animated haunted house. it's the fourth year they have built a haunt end house in their backyard. this year's theme is an

abandoned mine in the middle of the bay area that no one knows about. >> to be scared and startled and amazed by special effects, and all sorts of actors. >> the haunted house is at 1048 peralta avenue. open to the public for two nights only. next saturday and on halloween. you can get in for a suggested donation of five dollars and half of that money goes to the almeda county community food bank. in the south bay more than 5,000 people came out to help find a cure for cancer. the light the night walk was held at a stayed are couple in san jose last night. these walkers raised $1.5 million for the leukemia and lymphoma society. each one carrying different colored lanterns. >> gold is for all the people who have passed away and it's in memory of them. the red is for all the participants. and then the white is for the

then monday, late, rain arriving in the north bay. numbers continue to drop. the 24 hour temperature change showing anywhere from about 2 to 35 degrees cooler right now than we were this time yesterday morning. so a little bit of a cooler air has influenced our marine layer. out there now is 56 concord, 54 in san francisco, 52 san jose. in the north bay we are chilly. 47 napa, 46 antioch. and hour by hour, the sun is up around 7:26:00 in the morning. it will do so under partly cloudy skies. a few chilly spots. by 4:00 question will start to see the build right along the coast once again. by 7:00 increasing clouds. it's a nice looking day. some of the warmer spots get into the 70s. high today 63 san francisco, 68 the high in oakland and about 72 in san jose. 73 concord. and up to about 69 degrees.

the kickoff around 1:05. lots of sunshine. chill in the air and a light jacket is what you need. by 4:00 the temperatures will be up a few degrees around 72 degrees. and future weather, it's going to pick up from there. we are tracking some showers first thing monday morning. this is 7:00 in the morning. here's our next storm system. well to the north of the region. we are going to watch it slowly try to advance to the south. by 4:00 monday morning we see the showers make their presence known around santa rosa. heaviest well north of you. as we go into into the evening hours on monday the front will sag to the south. we lose a lot of the intensity of the system so it does look like it may fall apart. we could see measurable precipitation in the north bay but it can't make it south of the golden gate. we will keep watching it. any chance for get weather on

monday is really in the north bay. let's plan the next seven days. clouds moving in late in the day and bubbling up. by monday we see increasing clouds, too. and a chance in the north bay late. showers may try to linger in the north bay tuesday morning. we start to dry out tuesday afternoon. by wednesday more dry, just a mixture of sunshine and clouds. then we do the process all over again. by thursday the clouds build back in full force. i think this is the best chance we have, some widespread showers, particularly light in nature and it may linger into saturday. >> thanks, drew. just ahead, steph curry hopes everyone will be staring at his shoes for the right reason this season. a preview

>> there's a new feature for childcare seats but does it work and is it right for your kids? here's michael finney. >> for 60 years consumer reports has tested child seats and a lot has changed from the seat to the way they are secured in cars. all the changes have dramatically improved child passenger safety. the most recent improvement is called the load leg. >> the load leg is support that extends from the base of the infant seat to the vehicle floor making the seat more stable and safer for the baby. >> consumer reports recently updated their ratings of rear-facing infant seats that typically offer the best fit for children under one-year-old. the tested seats with load legs

received high rating in a simulated 35 miles per hour crash test. the side by side tests showed similar seats from the same manufacturer perform with and without the load leg. although both perform well but the one with the load leg has less forward motion than the one without it. >> it offered in almost a 50% decrease in head injuries to the dummies than the one without it. >> consumer reports evaluation found it easy to use. but you will pay a premium for this new feature. seats that include a low about leg tend to be extensive, from prices ranging from 250 to almost $400. while consumer reports says all seats are safe when used and installed correctly, seats with a low leg feature offer an additional margin of safety.

website abc7news.com. the election is just 16 days away. 50 years ago this month, hugh youy newton and bobby seal joined the black panther party in oakland. a gala was held last night to commemorate the anniversary and there's a museum exhibit. >> it calls the black panthers controversial to some but inspirational to many. this exhibit captures both sides of the party born in oakland in 1966. there are photos of black men in leather jackets and black berets often armed and pushing back to police. the fbi called them the greatest set to security. but the community saw something else. the handwritten draft of the panthers founding platform, the on ten point program, included demands for decent housing, full employment and self determination. >> it's this remarkable document

eureka, you go throughout monday afternoon, trying to get the act to the but the heaviest showers around ukiah and starting do make their presence known around here. it loses a lot of its moiso -- moisture see it loses it's punch. monday in the north bay. generallablily when you see numbers less than a quarter inch on this map with another storm likely a lot of that moisture not even reaching the ground. right now the best chance of seeing any measurable participation will be in the north bay. the accuweather seven-day forecast. the next seven days partly cloudy sky on the way today. a really nice day. comfortable temperatures. it feels like fall. monday a chance of rain beginning in the north bay pretty late. the showers look to be confined in the north bay tuesday morning. wednesday a mixture of sunshine and cloud throughout and then we do the whole process again. by thursday the cloud cover back in full force.

>> here's are the winning numbers from last night's powerball draw. nobody got all six. wednesday night's jackpot grows to $164 million. happening today, a navy veteran and paralympic swimming champ who lost his sight will swim from alcatraz to crissy field. he was blinded while serving in afghanistan back in 201 1. he's won four gold medals in the london and rio paralympic games. today he will jump into the open waters swimming two miles from the alcatraz to the san francisco bay. it's to raise awareness for the swim forsythe event, a foundation focusing on eyesight.
