7 is tracking the first of two storms set to hit the bay area this week as crews work late into the night to clean up a huge tree that fell on to an east bay apartment building. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. city officials in berkeley say strong winds brought that tree down today. >> there is rain and check out the time lapse video. abc7 news was on the san francisco sky way tonight during the height of the rush hour. the drivers had to turn on the wiper blades making the slow drive home a little more difficult tonight. >> we have live team coverage and sandhya patel is tracking the rainy morning commute. let's begin with lilian kim live in berkeley with a rush to clean up the big tree that came crashing down. >> reporter: dan and ama the tree is quite large. crews were unable to finish the clean up work tonight. how, as the tree fell it pulled up a chunk of the sidewalk creating a big mess on busy college avenue.
1:10 am
workers with the professional tree care company dropped everything when they got a call from the city of berkeley about a fallen tree on college avenue. the 80-foot elm is three feet in diameter and much of it landed on top of an apartment building. no one was hurt and there was minimal structural damage. removing the tree piece by piece has been a challenge. >> the guys are using power tools in what would be normally daylight and now it is dark outside. in a perfect situation we would have big light towers and leet up the whole -- and light up the whole scene. >> the elm was found hollow and likely diseased and the rain and the wind were enough for the tree to topple. it also shutdown ferry service between south san francisco and alameda. high wind warnings greeted motorists on the san mateo bridge. as is the case, the rain began north before hitting the rest of the bay area. >> i love it. i think it is beautiful. we just ate soup and i was
1:11 am
craving walking outside. >> others took it as somewhat of a wake up call, that this fall entry is the first of many. >> we have a large tree in our neighborhood that we wonder about. it makes you wonder to be more aware of your surroundings and think about where you are walking and look around. it seems like it can happen very quickly. >> the goal tonight was to remove pieces of the free dash dash -- dash of the tree that landed on the building. crews will be back out to finish the rest of the job. lilian kim abc7 news. >> ama: lilian thank you very much. >> dan: let a continue with sandhya patel. >> ama: she is continuing with it. >> sandhya: as we take a closer look, this is what you are facing for the morning commute. damp roadways there. the road spread steadiest of the shower activity is in the north bay between heelsburg and pen grove.
1:12 am
i will take you to street level. we are seeing the wet roadways and that's what you will encounter. wiper weather for tomorrow morning's commute. much of the central and south bay is getting a break and as you look at the storm impact scale this is a one. it is a light system. scattered showers for tomorrow and slick roadways and it will be breezy in spots although the wind has eased up. the commute planner shows us what to expect. the ferry ride is choppy and if you are walking fair conditions are expected. make sure you have your rain gear with you. we have two more storms coming behind this system that wraps up tomorrow. i'll be back with a look at the second one which could get interesting. when it will all play out. >> thank you sandhya. and abc7 mornings will have the latest on the rain and the wet morning commute. mike nicco and alexis smith will keep you updated at 4:30 a.m. and stay on top of the rain anytime.
