and then just two hours later, a more powerful 6.1 magnitude aftershock. centuries old buildings with holes punched straight through, huge boulders blocked roads, slowing search and rescue teams elderly residents going street by street. the major of the town calling the situation apocalyptic. the tremors striking the country just two months after a powerful 6.2 earthquake in the same region killed nearly 300 people. we felt it in rome. some 60 miles away. right now, darkness and heavy rains are hampering rescue efforts. jennifer ekle ston, abc news, rome. >> now, the only casualty from that quake so far was a 73-year-old man who died of a heart attack apparently brought on by stress. turning to the race for the white house, both candidates scrambling to sway voters in

they arrived in a refugee camp that opened days ago, houses 6,000 people, and the family is one of just 42 families so far. more than 1 million people still live in mosul, and the u.n. predicts all could be displaced as the iraqi army fights to take back the country's second city. at another refugee camp, the u.n. is prepped for 30,000 people. there's so many little ones. aide agencies saying more than half a million children escape isis in northern iraq, but even once they reach the relative safety of a camp, no one wants to stay. and most refugees we've spoken to don't want to stay in the camps or abroad and if their countries recover, they want to go home. >> understandably.

senator ted cruz is raising the possibility of leaving the supreme court with a vacant seat if hillary clinton wins the election. cruz is suggesting that republicans may simply block anyone nominated by clinton to replace the late justice antonin scalia. john mccain made a similar statement a few weeks. so far the gop-led senate has refused to even hold hearings on president obama's nominee. a symbolic moment in the united nations for the first time in 25 years, the u.s. on stained from a vote criticizing its embargo with cuba. it follows president obama's restoration of full diplomatic relations with cuba and his support for lifting the embargo. when the vote tally was shown on the electronic board, diplomats burst into applause. two powerful earthquakes have shaken central italy, a region still reeling from a major quake in august. last night's quakes toppled buildings and sent frightened residents into the streets. no one seriously hurt, but one man reportedly died of a heart

attack from the stress. early reports indicate that there was major structural damage in the town. the earthquake in august killed nearly 300 people. we'll have much more from italy in the next half hour. city officials in boston are demanding answers after a smoke-filled subway spread panic among riders in the evening commute. it's believed the smoke originated from an overheated motor. abc's linsey davis has more. >> reporter: a rush hour nightmare. cell phone video captures the panic inside boston's famous back bay station as smoke fills the air, passengers try to escape, breaking windows, diving out and video inside the subway car, and the system known locally as the tea, shows commuters cramming through the window to get out. >> i'm opening the door, calm down. >> reporter: some who escaped tried to break out windows to pull others to safety. officials say the train's motor overheated at 4:30 in the afternoon, likely causing the

smoke. with the iconic station just a few hundred yards from where the marathon bombs went off, that city is still on edge. from the sky, helicopter footage shows firemen at the scene. ambulance, and first responders ready to treat those inside. it's an increasingly familiar scene these days as america's ageing subway systems continue to decline. early last year, a mechanical failure caused smoke in a different boston station leading to panic. both incidents in boston come on the heels of the d.c. metro incident where smoke filled a car, sending more than 80 people to the hospital and killing one. three people were transported to the hospital. it's not clear at this time if the age of the line was a factor. we do know that it was in service at some point in the '70s, and that's something they will be looking into. linsey davis, abc news, new york. california man charged with shooting two police officers to death will face the death penalty. investigators say officers were responding to a domestic violence call in palm springs

earlier this month when john felix opened fire through a screened door. officer gill vega was just months from retirement and officer leslie was a rookie just returning from maternity leave. in california, two people under arrest accused of shooting at a police car during a civilian ride-along. the bullets missed the civilian, but she was injured by shattering glass, and now she's speaking out about that terrifying experience. here's abc's lauren lyster. >> you okay? >> my face. >> reporter: she's the woman heard crying inside the patrol car on a civilian ride along to learn more about police work when this intense moment in california was caught on camera. >> shots fired! >> i didn't know how to react. i was thinking about my kids.

i thought i was going to get shot. >> 29-year-old jessica valencia, mother of two, in the car when the officer she was with tries pulling over this mazda. but instead of yielding, the two people in the suv opened fire and two bullets pass between the officer and valencia, missing them both. >> i see the bullet in the front, hitting so close. nobody would survive something like that. >> reporter: authorities say suspects fired 14 times with this ar-15 pistol before getting away. their motive? not wanting to be stopped. now valencia living to tell the tale, recovering from minor cuts, said it was the first and last ride along, and police very close to making good on this earlier promise. >> we will have people in custody before the week is out. >> reporter: authorities now say

a big surprise from american olympic legend, michael phelps, something we never knew about him while he was swimming and winning gold at the games in rio. that's ahead on "the skinny" on this thursday, october 27th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now". good morning, everyone. i'm mara schiavocampo in for diane this morning. >> i'm kendis. we're starting this half hour starting overseas, and the damage from two earthquakes that rocked central italy. take a look. they were powerful enough that destroy buildings, sending debris into the streets. >> many residents sleeping outside fearing more quakes. the worst hit area appears to be the town where the church suffered major damage. >> aftershocks follow a quake back in august leaving nearly 300 people dead. abc's jennifer eccleston reports from italy. >> reporter: churches crumbled in central italy and terrified residents ran into the streets as multiple earthquakes struck

just after night fall. the first quake, 5.5 magnitude, and then just two hours later, a more powerful 6.1 magnitude aftershock. centuries old buildings with holes punched straight through, huge boulders blocked roads, slowing search and rescue teams elderly residents going street by street. the major of the town calling the situation apocalyptic. the tremors striking the country just two months after a powerful 6.2 earthquake in the same region killed nearly 300 people. we felt it in rome. some 60 miles away. right now, darkness and heavy rains are hampering rescue efforts. jennifer eccleston, abc news, rome. >> now, the only casualty from that quake so far was a 73-year-old man who died of a heart attack apparently brought on by stress. turning to the race for the white house, both candidates scrambling to sway voters in those battleground states. >> trump detoured to washington

for the grand opening of his new luxury hotel, and numbers from florida show he's two points ahead of hillary clinton. a statistical dead heat. nationally, clinton is still leading. abc's cecilia vega is on the campaign trail. >> reporter: hillary clinton is the one lobbying attacks against her opponent being off the campaign trail. >> donald trump is taking time off the campaign trail to officially open the hotel. >> reporter: clinton on a florida blitz counting down the days -- >> you know, with 13 days left in the election, we cannot stop for a minute. no complacency here. >> reporter: donald trump calling florida a must-win, and that new poll showing just how tight the race here is, clinton now leaving nothing to chance. after three days of early voting, more than 2 million people casting ballots. that's up 10% from 2012. so far, republicans and

democrats heading to the polls in even numbers. clinton's team says more latinos than ever are turning out. a good sign for them. team trump pointing to long lines as proof of their strength. this is a line of people just waiting to vote here in palm beach county, stretching down the side of this library. clinton also took a break from campaigning to attend that adele concert, a birthday gift to herself, plus, this gift from the singer on stage. >> don't vote for him. that's what i say. i support hillary clinton. >> reporter: on her 69th birthday, aides surprising her with a cake, and supporters in florida breaking into song. and the clinton strategy now to hold their final few rallies near polling places so when the events are over, they encourage

supporters to vote to lock the votes in early. cecilia vega, abc news, miami. >> one more note from the campaign trail. the muslim-american gold star dad who found himself in the center of a public feud with donald trump is now campaigning for clinton, speaking in virginia, khizr khan accused trump of peddling hate, slamming trump as un-american and unfit to lead the military. >> trump continues to insist that he knows more than the country's military leaders. >> yeah. the republican nominee headed straight to north carolina last night where he unveiled a so-called new deal for african-americans designed to revamp struggling communities, and earlier he sat down for an exclusive interview with abc's george stephanopoulos, boldly criticizing the operation in mosul. >> let's talk about mosul. you sent out a tweet that the operation was a total disaster. the defense secretary says they are making progress, encouraged by the progress. former dean of the army war college says this shows trump doesn't know a damn thing about military strategy.

national guard soldiers who are being told to repay thousands of dollars in bonuses. defense secretary ash carter has ordered repayment efforts be suspended. carter says not all soldiers given the bonuses knew they weren't supposed to get them. they are looking for a long term solution. a surfer who nearly lost his leg to a shark is opening up about his frightening ordeal. joseph tanner was straddling his surf board off the coast of oregon this month waiting for that perfect wave. that's when he says something grabbed his leg and pulled him under. >> i remember being underwater and seeing the gills, but i don't know how far underwater i was. again, i just literally saw this much of the shark, and it was really hard and the skin was super rough, like grainiest sand paper in existence. >> wow. tanner broke free by punching the shark in the gills. good for him. he's recovering from a bite measuring 26 inches from the upper thigh to his ankle and six
