another plane burst into flames in chicago. tonight federal investigators are headed to similar scenes 1,300 miles apart. good evening, i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for being here. fort lauderdale international airport had to be closed after the incident this morning. >> it started when a fedex plane's gear collapsed when it was landing. that sfarkd a fire which spread to the fuel tank. hundreds of people watched as the fuselage exploded launching chunks of plane into the air. >> fire crews rushed to the plane and put out the fire. the two pilots on board, the fedex plane escaped unarmed and airport officials reopened the airport an hour ago. one runway is still closed for the investigation. >> now take a look at this cell phone video from chicago's o'hare international this afternoon. it was a scary scene as everyone on board had to evacality when an american airlines plane caught fire on the tarmac. one passenger described the evacuation as coordinated chaos, but complemented the flight crew for helping to get everybody offer the plane in one minute.

american says flight 383 bound for miami developed a mechanical problem on takeoff. 161 passengers and nine crew members used the inflatable emergency slides to get off that plane. >> oh, my god! oh, my god, my gosh, my god. >> frightening. several people were injured, and we don't know how badly.% the passengers were taken back to the terminal. the faa says the boeing 767 blew a tire and damaged an engine. all right. now trouble on the ground to that epic traffic jam many of you were stuck in for hours today. drivers trying to get out of san francisco and on to the bay bridge and ran into just pure gridlock. look at these pictures. aren't you glad you weren't in this? maybe you were? some sat in traffic for more than three hours after a big rig crashed in the rainy weather just before 5:00 this morning. here's a live look from our south beach camera showing traffic moving again slowly. nothing like we saw earlier. abc 7 reporter lieian melendez is live in san francisco with the story.

lyanne, hue frustrating. >> reporter: the only thing missing here is the planes as in planes, trains and automobiles. if you were to come from the south bay, the east bay or if you were trying to leave san francisco or just navigate your way through the city, you had a rough commute. the accident on the lower deck of the bay bridge closed all but one lane of traffic. this morning's commute was shock. >> i left alameda this morning at 8:00 a.m., and it's three hours now that hive been in my car trying to get to california street. >> reporter: she was stuck behind this red truck in the heart of downtown san francisco. >> he can't block it so go that way. >> thank you. >> the driver was just as frustrated. >> i've been through like maybe my sixth stop, right here right now. this is ridiculous right now. >> it took him 30 minutes to move one block. >> you guys have been hanging out here drink your cup of cove, and sort of like amazed at this

traffic. >> pretty much. it's been like this for about 45 minutes since we've been here. >> reporter: many found out there's much to do while one is idle like napping, conducting conference calls and playing that fire drill game while pored. the big rig spilled fuel on the pavement forcing the closure of four lanes. the driver is okay and the impact as reported was almost immediate. >> the on ramp at first and harrison was closed and the bay bridge was reduced to one lane at one point so this has really intensified traffic on san francisco streets. >> reporter: san francisco municipal transportation agency typically has parking control officers at three to four on ramps during commute hours. this morning they had 25 officers directing traffic. >> never, never in driving. always b.a.r.t. three stops. real easy. >> reporter: many more wish they had done the same. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news.

>> thanks, lyanne. another big rig caused a traffic mess heading to the san mateo bridge this morning. the big rig caught fire on eastbound highway 92 in san mateo just east of 101. flames engulfed the cab and the front of the truck, as you can see. sky 7 was overhead as at least five units responded to this fire. traffic was backed up to highway 101 as firefighters put out the flames and cleared fuel from the roadway, but as you look from sky 7, what a mess. multiple lanes were closed for about three hours. the road was finally cleared at 1::25 p.m. it's been a tough day for drivers today. >> absolutely. our other top story locally. another sewing day across the bay area. this is a live picture working back towards san francisco. skies clearing and in fact quite dramatic right now. >> the rain caused traffic problems all along. the chp had to slow down drivers on highway 101 because of this wreck in petaluma, and from the looks of this picture we'll show you here the ground is already becoming salt rated. that will help give us the

runoff to fill our reservoirs though. >> we have team coverage. meteorologist sandhya patel has the rain totals but we begin with abc 7 news reporter david louie with the problems caused in the south bay. david? >> kristen, today's storm had a dramatic impact in the south bay. streets flooded, of course. also had pour outages and playing fields also had to be closed because of soggy turf and yet today's rain was not a deterrent as some people decided to have outdoor activities. the heavy rain made it tough on anyone who couldn't stay inside. grocery shoppers got drenched as they dashed across the parking lot. the guadalupe river was raging and it serves as a drain for the runoff channeling it to the bay and taking it with it empty bottles and probably discarded upstream at homeless encampments and just above the river volunteers and staff from the american cancer society of silicon valley were setting up tents and preparing for 15,000 walkers who show up for tomorrow's 5k making strides

event. event manager stephanie wilson hs been watching the weather forecast closely. >> i have been matching it since 15 days out and it keeps flip-flopping back and forth and now we're here and ready to rock 'n' roll. a little rain is not going to stop up. >> reporter: the tents will help but the motivation to support cancer patients will transcend rain. >> i don't think the weather will affect cause. this is an amazing cause, i'm a breast cancer survivor myself and survivors and their whole and their supporters will be how the here for this event rape or shine. >> reporter: as the rain eased up drivers discovered flooded roads. up full lane of center road across from kelly park was impassable and some big rigs and smaller vehicles plowed through the small lake anyway. at the friday farmerers' market one vendor said the rain was impacting shopper turnout but there's a bright side. >> we do like the rain, are getting red for winter and doesn't hurt the winter crops

but does accelerate the season a lot faster. >> in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. the rain fell hard hand heavy in the central and city crews will had to shout down parts of ninth street of this morning. modesta police said there were a couple of crashes but nothing more serious than fender benners. >> wet roads made for slippery driving in the north bay. this car skidded off the road while heading north on highway 1 north of petaluma. that was about 8:30 this morning on highway 1. the chp had to -- and in calistoga this truck came off the road. it's not clear what caused the accident but the roads, of course, were wet, and the rain was coming down at the time. >> no word yet if the weather had anything to do with a

single-car crash last night in petaluma. a 69-year-old vallejo man was killed when his toyota cam ray ran off highway 116 and slammed into a tree near pine view way. that man's name has not been released. all right. well, we are continuing to track this wet weather very closely tonight. >> yeah. let's check in with sandhya patel to see how much rain we've received and, of course, sandhya, what's ahead? >> dan and kristen, take a live look on our showers -- let's start out first in the inland east bay out towards the dyson, wall net boulevard. getting light returns and. treat level there is showing where you still see wet roadways and the san francisco totals, about 3/4. san francisco got more for a change, and santa rosa over an inch and same thing with livermore.

allow push allert. >> reports of gunshots led -- that's where they found the man piece body on the front porch of his home late last night. more on this strange story. >> and dan, mr. gilliland was a prominent lawyer. he was murdered outside his front door and as of right now people don't have many leads. aches 7 news was there as this group of young people took flowers to the home of attorney james gilliland, a partner kilpatrick, townsend and stockton. he was gunned down on the front porch of his house on mira vista drive last night hand police got the call just before 9:00 p.m. >> they immediately started cpr. paramed hicks arrived shortly after and it was not successful.

the person succumbed to his injuries. >> reporter: gilliland handled cases for tech giants like oracle. jim was an absolute pillar of our law firm. he was a close friend as well as mentor and role model to many. >> jim will be missed deeply. >> police and investigators say right now they don't have much to go on. >> as of now there's no suspect information. there's no motive known to us. no witnesses. >> obviously investigators will have to consider whether a disgruntled client could be behind gilliland's murder but they need the public's help. >> by nature the law profession is very confidential so if there's someone out there, who knows if a case he was involved with. they will have to call us. >> reporter: they hope that call comes before the trail gets any closer. in el cerrito, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> two restaurants shut down. just ahead, a live report on what inspectors found inside

diners in the shout bay were surprised to find out two popular restaurants are closed. the doors are closed at the hometown buffet and on el camino real in santa clara. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is live in santa clara and these closures could be temporary? >> very temporary, kristen. in fact the store behind me on el camino just reopened at 5:00. the other store in san jose is supposed to open by lunch tomorrow. now hometown buffets have had their financial issues here in california and nationwide, but these temporary closures had to

do with something much smaller. >> one by one would-be hometown buffet customers found themselves literally locked out thanks to a sudden closure at two south bay locations. >> that's crazy because people on the friday after the workweek they like to go out to eat. >> at capital avenue and in santa clara there are red signs posted from the county saying the restaurants are closed due to a rodent and/or pest problem. >> oh, i hope not. >> they should maintain that every month. had the cockroaches pest control come over and do the cleaning once a week period. >> at both restaurants we could see employees inside and no customers. a company spokesperson did not immediately return calls for comments. >> many of those locked out today told us they are regulars. >> i've been to santa clara and i've talked to the managers

drugs worth half a million in oakland today. the alameda county sheriff's office tweeted photos of 16 pounds of cocaine and overs arrested seven people in connection with the drug haul and they say they were involved with the mexican trafficking organization. >> the dmv says all but five of its offices are back to normal after a computer glitch wiped out most of its operations this week. we now know what -- as you know, there was just a huge problem with the dmv and as a result many people were unable to get their help that they needed at the dmv. the remaining offices were snowed to return to full strength. seems like the dmv didn't have a recovery system in place. two-thirds of businesses were put out of business on monday. the dmv should have had its primary and backup systems physically separated with independent power supplies rather than running side by side. >> we now know what killed a

blue whale that washed ashore on the daly city coast. a new cropsy was completed on the 65-foot whale yesterday and they say it died with injuries consistent of being hit by a ship. the young male had massive skull fractures and massive hemorrhaging and the chale will be left on shore to decompose naturally. the gross national product expanded 2.9% in the third quarter, the best jump in the past two years. economists attribute the boost primarily to consume every spending and trade and analysts say the jump eases fears of a near term slowdown. >> good evening, everyone, a nice dreenching of the storm and live doppler 7 still tracking spotty showers. peeks of blue out there. look across 580, damp spots headed across that area and

let's take you down to street level and rio vista looking at light to moderate returns and anderson road heading into rio vista. north bay spotty light showers popping up over the hills and a look at what's ahead. this storm unlike the last one is coming in from the northwest so it's a colder storm and that means that's going to bring snow to the sierra nevada. raindrops on the lens and mid to upper 60s san francisco, oakland, san jose 70 degrees and gill row 67. we're seeing weather-related delays on arriving flights of almost two hours hand if you're pick someone up keep that in mind. santa rosa and concord and livermore and add that extra layer. dramatic shot. is that pretty or what? next storm arrives tomorrw night and we're looking at heavy rain at times sunday morning so if you have outdoor activities

sunday morning will be the time. you might want to take them inside. on the storm impact scale this is a 1. saturday night into sunday we're expecting the storm. downpours for sunday morning and a slight chance for thunder and wind gusts 15 to 30 miles per hour so the biggest difference is this storm is colder. it brings us wind and not only that this one will actually bring us not as much rain as we saw the last system. still have lingering showers just ahead of the next system. 11:00 a.m. a few showers in the north bay and notice it's not everywhere. 8:00 saturday night. we're beginning to see the first signs of that actual storm moving in going into 1 1ks p.m. light to moderate rain. still in the north bay. pochs red and orange indicating heavier rain and potential for rain and thunder and 8:00 a.m. it's pretty much covering the entire bay area with the exception of a few inland locations and this hour-by-hour forecast shows you scattered showers continuing for your sunday afternoon before things wind down. rainfall titles higher and over

an inch there and much lower in the south bay. got your share this time around and next time it's going to be a quarter of an inch and first thing tomorrow morning temperatures start off in the 50s. we'll have some showers around. if you have early morning plans keep that in mind but certainly not going to be a weekend washout. temperatures tomorrow afternoon low 60s to low 70s and a couple of showers not out of the question. in the sierra nevada, winter storm watch. saturday night through sunday evening, traveling from tahoe or up to tahoe, snow level down to 6,000. passes will be impacted. one to two feet above 7,000 feet. we need the snow up there and this is a good sign. in case you're making halloween plans, sunday and monday you're fine for the parades at 8:00 in the morning. 6:00, rain line begins to move n.8:00 p.m. some light rain moving into the north bay and going into tuesday so most of the trick-or-treaters will be just fine. accuweather seven-day forecast, 1 on storm impact scale for saturday into sunday and next system is weaker, lighter rain
