nding debris in the air. the entire airport was shut down during this initial cleanup. one runway remains closed as federal investigators head over to the scene. >> look at this scary cell phone video from chicago this afternoon. passengers had to evacuate when an american airlines plane caught fire on the tarmac at o'hare international. the passengers say it was remarkably calm considering the circumstances. with the only real anger directed at passengers who were holding everyone up trying to grab their carry-on bags from the overhead bins. american says flight 383 bound for miami developed a mechanical problem during takeoff and had to abort. 161 passengers and nine crew members scrambled to get off the plane using emergency slides. eight people were injured but not seriously. >> unusual and strange. two incidents like this on the same day. good evening. >> now to a murder mystery in

this east bay. the victim a high-powered attorney killed on the porch of his bay area home. >> it happened just before 9:00 last night. we have a live report with the story. eric? >> jim's attorney client list include kd oracle apple and tony and outcast. as you mentioned he was gunned down just outside of his front door. police have little to work. that's why they are asking for the public's help. >> we hope there are people who have cameras maybe on their homes or businesses maybe have seen a car going by possibly a high-rate of speed at that time of the night. >> this group of young people took flowers to the home. a partner in the law office. he was 62 and gunned down on the front porch of his house last night.

police got the call just before 9:00 p.m. >> started cpr, paramedics arrived shortly thereafter. it was not successful. he succumb to his injuries. >> reporter: he handled cases for giants including apple and oracle. his firm released this statement saying jim was an absolute pillar of our law firm. he was our trusted colleague and close friend, as well as a mentor and role model to many. jim will be missed deeply. police investigators say right now they don't have much to go on. >> as of now, there's no suspect information. there's no motive that is known to us no witnesses. >> reporter: obviously, investigators will have to consider whether a disgruntled client could be behind the murder but will need the public's help. >> by nature the law profession is confidential. if there is someone that knows a case he was involved with will have to call us. >> reporter: they hope the call comes before the trail gets any colder. abc 7 news.

now to the storm watch. a life look from our camera. it shows the calm between the storms. more rain and high winds expected this weekend. spencer christian is here with a look ahead. the moment we have a lot of clouds but not much rain. doppler 7, little spotty shower activity right now. those areas will dissipate during the overnight hours. storm totals are impressive and uniform. anywhere from three quarters of an inch to an inch and a half in many locations. let's look at the next storm which will be moving in. forecast animation starts at 8:00 at which point we will see light scattered showers. those start tomorrow morning. nice break during most of the day. late tomorrow night we will see next wave of moderate to heavy rain move to the north bay. that's just the beginning of what could be some pretty turbulent weather overnight in to sunday. a closer look at what to expect for the entire weekend in just a

moment. >> look forward to that. abc 7 news was in concord at a pumpkin patch. they say the rain has hurt business but not the halloween pumpkins and they are ready for a busy weekend. abc 7 news reporter is joining us live with a look at what weekend events the weather will impact there. >> the american cancer society has a big outdoor event planned here tomorrow. as many as 15,000 people participating in a 5k walk rain or shine. you can see they have proactively put up some tents but storms do happen. it rained so hard at times is overwhelmed drans and flooded streets. one lane across from kelly park turned in to a small lake prompting quick lane changes for some drivers and others plowed through the standing water. the guadalupe river serves for run off to the san francisco bay. it carried with it empty bottles

that appear to have been swept away by encampments up stream. >> cupertino closed athletic fields this afternoon. this is creek side park which has three fields. tents were going up for a saturday event. making strides walk a fund-raiser for the american cancer society of silicon valley. volunteers and staff across soggy grass in boots undeterred by the storm. they have been through it before. >> a few years ago it was a torrential downpour and it was a fun, fabulous event. i think with the passion with the survivors their caregivers families and supporters nothing can get us down. >> reporter: 15,000 people are expected to turn out. >> i don't think the weather will impact the turnout at all. this is an amazing cause. i'm a breast cancer survivor myself. survivors, as a whole and their supporters will be here tomorrow for this event, rain or shine.

you can track the storm with the abc 7 news app. we have live doppler 7 on the app and you can enable push alerts to get weather advisories on your phone or tablet. traffic is moving on the bay bridge after an accident that paralyzed drivers all over san francisco for hours. let's take a live look from our south beach camera. you can see traffic moving again. kind of looks like a typical friday evening commute. it is moving slowly. thousands of drivers tried to get out of san francisco or anywhere near the bay bridge and were trapped in traffic for hours, just barely moving. big rig lost control in the rain and slammed in to the wall blocking three lanes on the lower deck of the bay bridge. >> the on ramp at first and harrison was closed and the bay bridge was reduced to one lane. that's intensified traffic on san francisco streets. >> the oil spilled on the pavement which is part of why the cleanup took so long. the driver of the truck wasn't hurt. many took to social media to

received new information about a planned building hundreds of feet away which was cancelled because experts warned it too would sink. we have a live report from city hall with the story. >> good evening. the building was supposed to be built at 80 natoma street but outside consultants said the building would have some settlement problems. the question is why did the city scrub that building project and allow millennium towers to be built? that's a question the supervisor and many others would like answered. >> how many feet apart is 301 mission street from 80 natoma. >> the hearing is focused on whether the developers concealed information about the tilting and sinking from those who bought the luxury condos. the 45-story high-rise on 301 mission is sinking 16 inches and tilting several inches to the

northwest. supervisor's target is the city's department of building inspections. did the city agency know about the unexpected settling? if so when and what did the agency do about it? he said he had learned that a planned high-rise hundreds of feet away at 80 natoma was scrapped by city inspectors in 2004 when they learned it had similar settling problems. >> a credible geo technical engineer expressed the building that the building could settle nine to 11 inches. >> the building was considered too dangerous to build. peskin said not so on the 301 tower. >> everyone knew it was suffering from the game geo technical problems that 80 natoma was suffering from. >> and then this relation. >> interestingly enough some of the geo technical engineers that were used in that project are

the same ones here. >> reporter: building inspection officials announced one important change in protocol no longer will consultants hired by developers be part of the peer review of new buildings. the entire panel will consist of consultants hired by the city. >> americans set a record for the highest gas consumption in six months this year. drivers used 78 billion gallons of gas january to june. 3% more than last year. california drivers used more gas than any other state, 10% of the overall total. over the past decade diesel emissions from trucks and ships have dropped significantly, down 53 to 98%. the port credits newer trucks cleaner engines and new requirements on emissions standards. it will help reduce the health risk from diesel emissions. vandals broke in to a haunted house stealing thousands
