o'hare airport. pieces broke off inside the engine and started shooting out. pansioners say it happened during the safety presentation. 161pansi passengers and nine cr deplaned on the runway sliding down emergency chutes. 20 had to be hospitalized with minor injuries. >> whoa! and new video shows the moment a fedex plane exploded in ft. lauderdale. its landing gear mall functioned, causing a fire yesterday evening. both pilots escaped without injury. investigators say most of the damage was done to the exterior of the fuselage. the interior appeared to be undamaged. tesla ceo elon musk has unveiled a new solar roof product in southern california. instead of solar panels, musk is offering solar tiles that would replace your roof. musk made the announcement last night on the old set of abc's "desperate housewives." tesla provided the video. it's part of the plan to create an alternative energy ecosystem

under the tesla name. the solar roof would charge the power wall battery which would recharge the tesla automobile. tesla expects to start installing the solar roof by next summer. the owner of one of the top restaurants in the world is being sued by an ex-employee. the french laundry is named for pregnancy discrimination. vanessa scott allen claimed she filed for a transfer from owner thomas keller's restaurant in new york city to the napa valley locatio location. she said after moving she was told her position was no longer available. one two of popular south bay restaurants that was closed yesterday reopened last night for dinner. the hometown buffet in santa clara opened after a one-day closure. the location on north capitol avenue in san jose remains closed. abc 7's laura anthony explains the reason for the temporary shutdowns. >> reporter: one by one, would-be hometown buffet

customers found themselves literally locked out thanks to a sudden closure at two south bay locations. >> crazy because people on a friday after the workweek, they'd like to go out and eat, you know. >> reporter: at both capitol avenue and n san jose and on el camino royale there are red signs posted from the county saying the restaurants are due to a rodent and/or pest problem. >> i hope not. >> they should have pest control come every month and do cleaning, period. >> reporter: at both restaurants, we could see employees inside but no customers. a spokesperson did not immediately return calls for comment. many of those locked out told us they're regulars. >> i've been to santa clara and talked to the manager there was quite some time. he says our problems is with the workers not doing their job right. and we have a big turnover, and we don't think they put in

opened bike path to yerba buena island will be closed all day. there will be several more implosions over the next two years. today's implosion is scheduled for 11:00 this morning. everyone, waking up to fog and light showers. here's live doppler 7. you'll notice that we have a smattering of showers down from pescadero through san francisco, oakland. very, very l.a. they're basically falling below the radar beam. we're getting more concentrated rain to the north. this is where some of the activity has been all night long. so around wilbur springs, cloverdale, we are in between systems. the main event arrives later on tonight. and here's a wider perspective. we'll tap into this moisture here. so getting into a few lingering showers this morning, a weak impulse will arrive. and you see more showers through the 10:00 hour. from san francisco down through santa cruz, mainly along the coast, the north bay. the bulk of the day will be dry

until our next system heads our way. in anticipation of the next system, a winter weather advisory in the lake tahoe area and a winter storm warning along the west slopes. anywhere from 16 to 18 inches expected over the passes. and here's what we can expect in and around the resorts. we're talking about maybe two inches south lake, six inches kirkwood. tahoe city and donner, incline in reno about four inches. certainly exciting news for the see sara nevada -- for the sierra-nevada. this system arriving in the overnight hours. about 10:00, notice the activity is here in the north bay. then the overnight hours still holding off. but with the passage of the frontal band, looking at some very gusty winds ahead of it and would behind it. 6:00, 8:00 in the morning, the bulk of the activity over the bay area. then by noontime, just scattered showers. so we are looking at once again a healthy rain here, from a quarter inch, perhaps more

it wasn't cracked when i came here. what happened? >> the manager agreed to pay so she'd it fixed. >> $1,033 and 77 cents. >> but when she presented the bill, auto city claimed the glass was already damaged before she brought it into the car wash. >> and i said, no. this car is in perfect condition. >> she said she kept demanding payment but no one responded. >> i was watching the news on abc and i saw "7 on your side." >> we asked auto city about her claim. the owner told us his company washes all companies by hand. no machinery could have broken the glass. he said small, sometimes inperceptible imperfections in glass can cause this when water is applied. we hand wash all cars and do not use brushes or other equipment that touches cars inside the car wash tunnel. however, auto city still paid her claim in the interest of good customer service. >> i feel like a miracle happened. i couldn't believe i got the money back.

people aren't the only ones who love halloween. look at this video the san francisco zoo posted on their youtube page. you see them scratching and clawing at the pumpkin. one managed to get inside and looks like he was hungry. you see more animals gobbling up golds at the boo at the zoo today. a costume parade will be held today at 11:00 a.m.. two more days until halloween. the clock is ticking for those who still need a costume. don't be scared, you still have time. abc7 news was at the spirit news in concord yesterday. for most it was about shopping for the right costume, and then there was this guy. >> last year i was a spiderman. i have to get the zipper first. it's hot in there. this year i'm going at pugsly. >> he said he's just a big kid who likes halloween. this little guy is ready, as well. but most were still looking for a costume that's just the right

to come in tonight. lingering showers this morning. the heavier rain overnight into sunday morning with gusty winds, maybe a thunderstorm. that's what we are anticipating. but right now it's in the 60s. 60 in the city, but 55 down in los gatos. 53 napa. today will be the last day of the sticky air. the dewpoint is lower that is the next system arrives. brings some dryer air behind it, but it will be quite windy. we will talk about rain totals and snow totals in a few minutes. chris. >> lisa, thank you. happening now, santa cruz police are cracking down this year on anyone who gets too rowdy this halloween. about 18,000 people celebrated downtown last year. more than 100 officers will patrol the streets this weekend. right now there's a safety enhancement zone to try to keep people out of trouble. the enhancement zone went into effect this morning at 12:01 and will remain in effect until tuesday. police arish you triple fines

for certain infractions in the zone, including open containers of alcohol, littering and trespassing. vandals broke into a haunted out in san jose recently stealing thousands of dollars of promises and equipment. now the owners are busy making repairs ahead of their busiest weekend of the season. >> the past two days have been pretty frustrating. >> the props we spent hours on all year long just destroyed in seconds. it kind of leaves your heartbroken. >> wednesday morning at westfield oak ridge mall, someone broke in stealing thousands of dollars of sound equipment and decorations. >> the whole blood, sweat and tears into some of the stuff and it hits home a little bit when someone comes in and tries to take it away from you, if you will. >> the family started it in their backyard nearly 20 years ago. it's been a halloween tradition many people look forward to. this year mike and his father, able, decided to turn it into a

parts of it is you can't get information. people are very concerned. they want to know what's going on. they are very sympathetic with the carriers. but they can't get through to the post office. >> congresswoman barbara lee is trying to get in touch with the postmaster for answers to the ongoing issue. fraternity and sorority parties are back on at u.c. berkeley this morning. the greek committee posed voluntary bans on parties last week after two women were reporting being assaulted. the guidelines were drawn up by a intrafraternity council. 22 nrapes were reported on campus or student housing in 2015 according to the crime statistics. four rapes were reported off-campus. two roads devastated by fires last year will be repaved

by recycled tires. a fire destroyed 240,000 acres. roads were severely damaged by flames and the heavy machinery used to fight them. they will repave two miles of roads in lake county and more than a half-mile in calavaras county. >> californians dispose 40 million tires a year and we need to recycle the material. it's a great road material. a 2 for 1 project and it helps the communities go back on feet after the devastating fires. >> cal fire's waste tire management program started not long after 7 million tires caught fire in tracy in 1998. americans set a record for the highest gasoline consumption in six months this year. drivers used almost 72 billion gallons of gas from january through june. that's 3% more than last year. california drivers used more gas than any other state, about 10% of the overall total. over the past decade, diesel

>> the storm has forced the closer are ty k oga road in yosemite. a winter storm has created hazardous driving conditions. the closer will remain in effect until further notice. the road typically closes in the fall and reopens in the spring. the park remains open. the storms haven't brought much snow to the tahoe basin. mount rose on the nevada side hoped to open on halloween but the resort's operators have pushed it back.
