>> now at 11:00, $270,000 a year for a janitor. tonight bart is defending the employee who raked in tens of thousands of dollars in overtime the good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. since we first brought you this story at 5:00 we talked to bart and the person who helped blow the lid on this staggering amount of pay. >> lisa amin gulezian is live in san francisco with new details. >> the janitor works here in the embarcadero as well as all of the downtown stations. he logs about 114 hours a week. the researcher who discovered all of this says the janitor is not to blame, but instead bart is. tens of thousands of people ride bart. they come through the stations and leave, you name it, behind and it is up to these guys to clean it up. this janitor makes $50,000 a year. but another raked in $162,000

in overtime. his total compensation for last yary totaled more than $276,000. researchers at the nonprofit transparent california say bart's compensation packages are outrageous and irresponsible. >> there is no reason to be paying their employees so much more than what the average person gets. >> the average janitor in california makes $28,000 a year. bart spokesperson insists it is cheaper to doll out overtime than to hire more employees. this way they are being conservative. this bart board member disagrees. >> what is wrong is again there is that many hours available for overtime. that is indicative of a staffing shortage. >> reporter: bart riders had mixed reaction. >> people need jobs. if you are paying one guy $200,000 you can for sure hire more people. >> i think it is a good opportunity for that person. >> reporter: i asked him for an interview and he declined because he is working.

she left in his vehicle. she reported it to uber and an hour later he returned to her house. he was gone when police arrived and they arrested him at his home. a man suspected of trying to force a girl into his home is under arrest. he is suspected of grabbing a girl on hickey boulevard yesterday and she was able to break free and run away. tonight it's official. recreational marijuana sales are now banned in san jose even if california voters pass a ballot measure that would make such sales legal across the state. indicate tooy is live in san hoe -- katie is live to talk about why they took this preemptive step. >> reporter: dan, it is called an urgency ordinance and not a single person spoke up about it. the city council passed it unanimously. >> right now we do not want to open ourselves up to recreational marijuana. >> the city counsel voted to keep recreational marijuana

illegal in san jose even if it becomes legal in california. that means no commercial growing, transporting or sales. the vice mayor says they want to avoid what happened when medical marijuana was legalized. >> at one point we had a hundred marijuana dispense res. >> the city had to hit the pause button. he has concerns about dui's edibles and cultivation. >> the state would allow any resident to grow marijuana in their backyard ox but not everyone wants to live next to the odor. >> he is an attorney specializing in the medical marijuana law. they say it covers san jose's concerns and the order neaps is unnecessary. jay it is a complete waste of time. it is a waste of taxpayer money and a waste of city resources. >> people who support the legalization of recreational marijuana believe it will be good for california and san jose. >> less crime. people don't have to worry about cops and they can smoke whenever they want to. >> if prop 64 passes a person

ballot as well as where you vote. visa is cutting hundreds of jobs and man in the bay area. the san francisco business times reports 800 to 1500 jobs have been cut and the foster city campus will be hit hard. the cuts come after the acquisition of visa europe. it will allow the company to cut costs costs and eliminate roles. nay neighbors have had enough of homeless people parking on their street and living in their rv's. abc news was in marin county where they have seen an increase in rv's ever since a ban on overnight parking within the city took effect. neighbors now say it is not uncommon to see needles and trash on the streets. some say their cars have been repeatedly broken into of people living in the rv's say they don't see a problem. >> there are no neighbors here. do you see any neighbors? no. the county is looking into posting new and no parking signs . for now people can park in the

adam says what you are really doing is task switching. >> there is basic limitations on what our brain can do. there is only so much information that we can hold in mind at the same time. >> in his new book "the distracted mind" he says our brains were never meant to multi task. when we concentrate on one thing the part of our brain that handles abstract thinking does much of the heavy lifting. when we absorb multiple sources at once it is able to switch back and forth. >> with eep of the switches there is a loss of the high resolution of the information. >> the result, everything from sloppyie #r* work to slower response time. adults typically switch tasks every one to two minutes. >> what can we do in a digital age when there are so many demands on our time? the advice is not to ditch technology, but manage it differently. >> you must prioritize important tasks and concentrate on them until they are done.

she was nationally known after writing an emotional letter following the attack by the former stanford swimmer. the magazine released an essay about turner's sentence. he served three months of a six-month sentence. she wrote, quote, when it was quickly announced that he would be serving six months i was struck silent. immediately i felt embarrassed for trying. if this case was meant to set the bar, the bar was set on the floor. a resident at san francisco's mill 11 yes, ma'am tower says he has video proof of the building's sinking problem. he posted the video showing a marble he says displays the building's leaning issue. the city's tallest residential skyscraper has tilted two inches and sank 16 inches since it was built in 2008. some residents are suing and the city is investigating. the marble is moving around pretty good on the floor. >> we are getting around without the rain today.
