this video could contain a clue as to what vandalized a high school theater program in the north bay. good afternoon, and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm larry beil. you know the old saying the show must go on. no better example of that spirit than at santa rosa high school where vandals struck hard at a production due to open friday night. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman joining us live from inside the auditorium. wayne? >> reporter: in the high school right now, santa rosa high school, things are going on and looking as they should. the kids are he hearsing and to a degree that's a miracle after what they have been through and, yes, it does appear that police have a lead.

>> did we notice this before? >> reporter: the last days before opening a high school play are always about putting pieces together, but at santa rosa high school this week those pieces were literal and broken. >> pieces of theater all over the theater. we found our columns had been knocked over. we found broken swords. we found broken lances. >> reporter: drama teacher victoria carpenter on the vandals who trashed this auditorium on halloween night. they almost turned their greek tragedy "trojan women" into a real one. >> this matters to us and it's important to us and the hard work we put into this is real and it just absolutely broke my heart thinking that someone could just look over that. >> a song for troy. >> reporter: the play tells with trojan women banding together after losing their husbands in war. after the vandals smashed their set and parts of the auditorium, this cast banded together to make things right, backed by overwhelming support from the community and across the country. >> i don't think that anybody

here will be beat that easily. >> reporter: this afternoon a lead in the form of a snapchat video obtained by the santa rosa press democrat. it the shows a kid with a sword and apparent damage. >> it's not somebody from here. we don't know who it is. that's why we turned it over to the police. >> reporter: meantime, the show opens friday night as scheduled. this tragedy that nearly became a disaster is now a triumph of will and resolve. in santa rosa, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> federal investigators have joined the effort to find the cause of monday's ferocious apartment fire in oakland. abc 7 news was there as a team from the atf began to survey the site this morning. that fire gutted the under construction building on lester avenue right near lake merritt. the atf would not comment today on a claim that was made the by former tennants of the building calling the fire suspicious nor would they say how long their team may be at the site.

>> b.a.r.t. says debris on the track filled the station with smoke causing a third rail insulator to flash and break right before midnight. passengers were evacuated. a train pulling into the station was damaged and taken out of servicech the third rail was repaired overnight and it was back in service for this morning's commute. b.a.r.t.'s newest rail car arrived in the bay area today. sky 7 was over the hayward yard earlier this afternoon as workers offloaded the car from a flatbed truck. the agency says the cars will have at least ten new cars by thanksgiving and the new cars are being trucked across the country from the factually in plattsburgh, new york. they expect to have the first new train cars in service after next month after they are done testing them. >> former 49ers tight end bruce miller pled not guilty to assault charges. abc 7 news was in san francisco's hall of justice where miller was arraigned. he's facing seven felonies. prosecutors say back in september he attacked a 70-year-old man and his son after miller tried to get into the wrong hotel room. his attorney told aches 7 news

he planned to file a motion that would execution miller from attending future hearings until his trial. >> after a year of sexual harassment scandals at the university of california, a uc regent is now accused of sexually had a rationing someone who forked for him. norman pettitte has apologized for asking the woman if he could, quote, hold her breast as she recorded a bra commercial. he's a radio executive. comedian heather mcdonald went public after hearing about the sexual harassment allegations against donald trump and fox chairman roger ailes saying those claims made her realize how serious the comments were. the executive tells the "l.a. times" he deeply regets what he sa he said to mcdonald. >> reporter: an uber ride home for a couple on saturday night was normal, but when they were dropped off at their palo alto

home they realized they forgot their cell phone. that's when they called the driver back and the woman in her 40s went outside to meet them. >> got the phone back from him and then he suddenly kissed her and groped her breast. she pushed him away and ran back inside her husband and she and her husband filed a complaint with uber right there and then. >> reporter: pedro liborio-an orve called the woman back about an hour later when he said he was outside the home and the couple called police. the man was arrested at his redwood city home on suspicion of sexual felly battery and misdemeanor stalking. the behavior described is disturbing and is not tolerated on the uber platform. uber said the man passed the background screening and had no prior complaints of this nature. >> doesn't matter if it was an uber driver, another ride share driver, a taxi driver, a bus driver, a pilot. the fact is you put your faith and trust in somebody in a position of trust and when they violate that trust, it's a very

laura anthony is there with the details. laura. >> reporter: they have been gradually taking the plant offline and that's why some customers have already noticed a slight change in their water. the plant is expected to be completely shut down to allow for this work by friday. >> reporter: this is really the -- kind of the heart of the plant where water gets treated. >> it's also the heart of much of east bay mud's entire supply system. the orinda water treatment plant dating back to the great depression and serves 800,000 of its 1.4 million customers. and now it's getting a major upgrade, a $22 million undertaking that's expected to be completed in just six months. >> we're adding a bifurcation vault with a value of that will allow us to split the plant flow in half. what that will do it will allow us to maintain the plant without doing a full shut down of the entire plant. >> the project will also include a new power substation that could keep the plant running in the case of a major power

outage, or an earthquake. while the work is being done, east bay mud customers west of the hills in oakland and other cities will be getting their water from other treatment plants like lafayette and san pablo. >> so they may not notice anything. if they do, they may notice a slight change in the taste of their water only because it's being treated at a different location. >> reporter: customers should notice no changes in water pressure. the renovation of the orinda plant is expected to be completed by next april. in orinda, laura anthony, abc 7 news. and gushing water is causing problems in fremont. you can see the road flooding here this afternoon from sky 7 caused by a broken water main. this is mission boulevard. southbound lanes at nursery avenue in the niles district are now closed because of flooding and police are diverting traffic on nursery avenue and police are asking drivers to avoid the area. >> as the standoff over a proposed pipeline in north

and here's what's making headlines at 4:30. b.a.r.t. says the overnight closure of the montgomery street station in san francisco was caused by some sort of debris that was on the tracks. the debris broke equipment on the third rail and filled the station with smoke, passengers on a train were evacuated and riders experienced major delays. everything is now back to normal. abc 7 news reporter vic lee found out that san francisco mayor ed lee has now received the names of the three finalists for the city's next police chief. some will tell us why some are already unhappy with the short list. today pope francis set a catholic ban on women serving as priests will likely stand forever. while the pontiff is not open to ordaining female priests he indicated there may be a possibility some day. today pope francis clarified his position saying the issue isn't up for debate. pope john paul ii wrote an apostolic letter in 1994 declaring that the catholic church has no authority to ordain women as priests. dung necessary crab fishermen are cautiously optimistic that the season will not be the disaster that we saw last year. the port of san francisco sent out this tweet giving fishermen a bit of a head's up. commercial crab fishing season begins in a couple of week but sport fishermen can begin dropping theropods this weekend. the state department of public

this is an interesting one. i'm glad i got this question because most companies give you a year. that's kind. industry standard. you need to check though and make sure your company isn't trying to pull a fast one in giving you 90 days or something like that, but here in california it's pretty much a year, but here's the cool thing you need to know. if your doctor or medical provider doesn't get their bill to the insurance company within their time limit which is generally a year like i said, they will often try to bill you. they can't. by law in california, if they miss the deadline, they miss the deadline. >> oh, wow. bill from los gatos says how do i get a response from my auto dealer who's leased me a car that's a lemon? >> you're talking to the wrong person. the auto dealer sold the product. the lemon deal is with the auto manufacturer themselves. have you to make sure you have what's legally a lemon and the basic rule of thumb and it is a rule of thumb if you brought it the in four times for the same problem and they can't get it solved they have had a lemon. if you took it in two times for

ice skating and holiday shopping parking will be at a premium. >> a live look at what the to expect. hi, lyanne. >> reporter: when they open the iskating rink you know people were already thinking about the holidays. there's maybe car sharing and here's why. car sharing is becoming more popular and it's a program that's supported by the city of san francisco. where do you put some of these cars. some life n.garages that the rest of us will try to park in if we come to union square. this isn't new. the city launched a pilot program about two years ago with company likes get around. now, get around allows people to rend out their cars when not in use. the number of spaces assigned to get around throughout the entire city is about 150 spaces.

that includes swasz on the street as well as garages. now the city has assigned up to 450, again, throughout entire city. san francisco likes it because studies have shown that for every shared car you are taking up to ten other vehicles off the road. >> one way that we do that is being able to provide dedicated off street spaces and garages as well as dedicated on street spaces so the car sharing could actually be visible in the neighbors and it could be accessible to citizens all across the neighborhood. >> what's the impact here on parking spaces downtown? well, take the sutter stock don garage not far from here. it has 1,500 parking spaces and only 30 of those have been assigned to get around car share. now the city doesn't know if it will expand the program, but the city is definitely encouraging people to take other means of transportation. i'm live in the city, san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc
