stop this problem is not easy. >> good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. in pescadero a battle for who is to blame forever the death of hundreds of steelhead trout. the cause has been debated for year and now neighbors say they have had enough. the pescadero marsh is ground zero for this fight. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen is there live. chris? >> reporter: dan and kristen, those fish kills have been happening for the past 20 years. residents are upset over what they say is a lack of action from the state. for some along the san mateo county coast this has become an all too common seen this fall. >> i've seen them in these big schools, you know, going belly up and looking for a way to be saved. >> reporter: hundreds of endangered stealhead trout at the pescadero marsh natural reserve. >> do we have to run out of fish completely before we do something about it.

>> reporter: scientists believe a lacks of oxygen in the water may be to blame. the most recent fish kill happened yesterday following the return of rain that caused the lagoon to overflow which then ruptured the sandbar that blocks the marsh from the ocean. fresh in saltwater layers and the mixing together in the lagoon leading to a great demand and locals say the dieoffs date back to 1995, two years after the state began a massive restoration of the preserve. >> it's really sad. it's sad to see something dead like that. >> reporter: while the neary behind the fish kills may sound simple more data must be collected before any action can be taken. their goal to monitor and manage the ecosystem in a way that favors the steelhead and the other species in the marsh. the state hopes to identify a short-term solution in the next six to 12 months but residents aren't too confident about the time line. >> one of the most frustrating things in my life seriously, really is. >> reporter: an upstream battle many are tired of.

in pescadero, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. a massive muddy road hazard is causing commuting delays in fremont. it's pretty bad. a water main break has shut down southbound lanes on mission before. sky 7 was above the rupture that happened just before 1:00 this afternoon. drivers are urged now to avoid mission boulevard at nursery avenue in the niles district. traffic is backing up as cars are being diverted on to nursery avenue. >> and tonight we're learning that there were two people in that small plane that crashed in contra costa county last week and the ntsb released its preliminary report this afternoon. the plane took off from buchanan field airport on october 25th. officials say it plummeted to the ground about three and a half minutes after takeoff. a new navigation system had just been installed in this plane. officials have not identify the two people killed in the crash, but we now know there were two people on board. vandals hit a north bay school and that act is only encourage willing students to be more determined. the theater was trashed at santa

greek tragedy "trojan women" into a real one. >> this matters to us and the hard work we put into this is real and it just absolutely broke my heart thinking that someone could just look over that. >> sing me oh, musa song by troy. >> reporter: it deals with trojan women banding together after losing their husbands in war. aftered vandals smashed the set in parts of the auditorium this was made right backed by overwhelming support from the community and across the country. >> i don't think that anybody here will be beat that easily. >> reporter: this afternoon a possible lead in the form half snapchat video obtained by the santa rosa press democrat showing a kid with a spear and apparent damage. >> it's not somebody from here. we don't know who it is and that's why we turned it over to the police. >> reporter: meantime, the show opens friday night as scheduled. the tragedy that nearly became a disaster and now a triumph of will and resolve. any message for the vandals, we asked. >> we're still going to put on a show.

we'll still be awesome, and all you really did was give us more publicity so thank you. >> reporter: from santa rosa, wayne freedman, abc news. >> an elected official in the east bay has been robbed. police in richmond say vice mayor eduardo martinez was held up at gunpoint. he wasn't hurt had. the suspect took his wallet and it happened on canal boulevard as martinez was heading home from riggers loft wine company. >> san francisco mayor ed lee has received a long-await the short list of candidates for police chief. the police commissioner has finally narrowed it down last night but now not everyone is pleased. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at city hall with the story. vic? >> reporter: well, the 64,000 question here at city hall is who are they, what are the names on that short list and now that the mayor has them, well, he'll go through the vetting process. he'll interview possibly each

one one by one but he has no deadline. you know, the conventional wisdom here, however, is that he will wait until the election is over to choose his new chief. >> last night after five months of a nationwide search, the police commission finally came up with a short list of candidates for police chief. three names which they gave to mayor ed lee and the names are secret and that concerns supervisor jane kim who wants the names released. >> reporter:. >> i think it's important for the public to be able to give feedback on a issue so important to our city. >> reporter: a native san franciscan came up through the ranks and former chief tony rischa wants the new chief to be an insider. >> an outsider is playing catchup, does not note players in the department and does not note players in the community. >> reporter: former b.a.r.t. police chief gary gee wants more

joyces than three names. >> i believe the mayor should be given those list of 11 candidates and be able to conduct one-on-one interviews if he chooses. >> reporter: the chinese chamber of commerce wants an asian candidate, but the deputy garrett tom the only asian did not make the short list. some of the names mentioned by several sources are interim chief tony chaplain, his deputy clean denies schmidt and cedri alexander and a cnn contributor and a command staff member from the lapd and ron davis, director of the u.s. justice department's cops program which is currently reviewing the operations of the sfpd. vic lee, abc 7 news. the san francisco-based flywheel is suing uber tonight saying its low cost fares are designed to erase competition. the suit essentially claims people ride uber because it's affordable but the prices are

only low because billionaires keep throwing money at the company. in august uber told investors it had lost more than $1 billion in the first half of this year. in a statement uber says its goal is to provide a credible alternative to the private car. shares of san francisco-based fitbit plunged more than 30% today. that's after the company said it continued to grow but not at the pace it had previously expected. revenue is also expected to fall 250 million short of projecti projections. fiteby the stock dropped more than 55% since its i'm poe in june. online review site yelp is laying off 4% of its work force. the plan is part of a new focus on local businesses in the u.s. instead of a global expansion. the san francisco's company jumped 10% and facebook has reported more than $7 billion in revenue. the menlo bark-based company has 1.8 billion daily users and the shares tumbled after hours

but my mind's made up. he's the drug company big shot who raised the price of a lifesaving pill by five thousand percent. said he wished he'd raised it more. prop sixty-one targets drug company price-gouging to save lives. the drug price relief act will save californians nearly a billion dollars a year. join the california nurses association and aarp and vote yes on sixty-one. the drug giants won't like it. and he'll hate it. well, two days after halloween we're hearing a lot about what some are calling a trick that went along with the treat that some kids got in their candy bags. abc 7 news reporter david louie is live in palo alto with the

story. david? >> well, dan, this is waverly street where about 5,000 kids gathered on halloween night, and also the very source of a which go mystery. who certainty home campaign stickser on their candy and some say it was harmless but a bit tacky. >> like many parents a peninsula mom named true love did an inspection of her kids' halloween candies. as the assorted candies came out she was shocked to see two large candy bars for a candidate running for state assembly. knowing that every parent would open the bag and see this candy. the name on the stickers is vicky vinker, a palo alto attorney running for state assembly and she said she had nothing to do with the stickers and disagrees with mrs. love that someone is politicizing halloween. >> halloween comes a week before

the election so it's a holiday that is routinely politicized. we see trump masks and nasty women and bad hombres and this is somebody saying positive they support me. >> reporter: the candy came from an upscale neighborhood called old pat crow where thousands of kids enjoyed closed streets and organized halloween activities and we asked her opponent count member marc berman for his reaction and he said, quote, my birthday is on halloween where the focus should on kids and costumes. candy and campaigns shouldn't mix. both parents and kids deserve a night off from politics. so it's a mystery who might have put the campaign stickers on the candy bars and how many of them were given out. the incident has left one mom with a bitter taste. in palo alto, david louie, aches 7 news. >> voters also have to keep their phones in the pockets at the voting booth. ballot selfies are still banned in california.

million dehumidifiers made by maida air conditioning. the company says the machines can overheat and burn. the company has 38 reports of smoke and fire causing nearly $5 million in damage all together, but it has no reports of injuries and that's the good par. the machines are sold under several brand names and i've posted those names and how to contact the company for a refund. federal authorities today accused a group of defense secretary collectors of using illegal scare tactics to rake in millions of dollar. new york state filed suit against three companies operating nationwide. the suit claims collectors impersonated law enforcement officers and threatened to arrest consumers if they did not pay. threats like to are illegal under state and federal law. the suit asks for restitution to victims and an end to the practices. our calls to the company today went unanswered.

is nutella a dessert or breakfast food? i'll weigh in with you guys in just a second. the makers of the chocolate hazelnut spread are urging the fda to call it a breakfast food saying it's more like jelly or jam than it is a dessert. why do they care? why is this important? well, if it's considered a breakfast food a serving can equal one tablespoon instead of two tablespoons so on the label each serving would have fewer calories and less sugar, you see where it's going. nutella says one tablespoon is a more likely amount to be spread on your toast. we'll see what the feds think soon. from the nba to celebrity circles more and more people are trying cryotherapy. willing customers are subjecting their bodies to temperatures of as low as 180 degrees below zero to heal their aches and pains. it's word of mutt and catching on. >> tonight i look at the

a storm, this storm here in the pacific is already bringing rain to the pacific northwest. it is kicking up the surf so we're expecting waves over 20 feet. tomorrow morning a high surf advisory goes up for the entire coast and it runs until friday at 5:00 a.m. there is a risk of rip currents and sneaker waves and watch out along the entire coastline. you can always download our abc 7 news app to help you get push alerts in the event that that advisory is upgraded to a warning. right now waves are pretty small from our santa cruz camera. good day for sailing. 71 right now in san jose and gilroy 72 and half moon bay 6 it degrees. highs so far up about everywhere so we're looking at mid-60s to the low 70s and a lomp view from ourer to camera as we look towards the headlands. visibility terrific. 68 in santa rosa and 67 in liver more and one other live picture from our mt. tam cam and can you see a little bit of haze there. there's a look at the income. another chilly morning is ahead hand warmer days through friday

and we're looking at a chance of showers saturday night into sunday morning. since we're talking about rain, let's talk about the northern sierra. a lot of our water supply comes from there. it's been the second wettest october for the northern sierra and rainfall 12.6 inches and average rainfall is 50% so they have received a quarter of their annual rainfall and this is encouraging, of course. we're hoping for much more. hour by hour planner, clear skies pretty much on through the morning hours hand could be a few patches of fog and it is going to get cool pretty quickly and tomorrow morning another chilly start mid-40s to lower 40s by 7:00 a.m. and once the sun comes up it will start to warm. chilly enough tomorrow morning under clear skies for most of you to where you'll need to get that jacket and get the little ones bundled up. for the afternoon it's a mild day. a warm day for some. 73 in the south bay and santa clara and san jose and mid-70s around places like morgan hill and gilroy. look at the peninsula all in the 70s, sunscreen weather, upper 60s coast side. it's going to feel like spring

again and 70s downtown san francisco and in the north day santa rosa 74 and napa and the east bay, low 70s for all of you. you'll need the shades for sure and inland areas bordering on warm. 77 in brentwood and 76 antioch and 674 in livermore. check out friday's forecast. we are expecting the warm november weather to condition. inland areas will still be in the 170s, and increasing clouds saturday leading to the potential for some wet weather. i'm going to show you the storm impact scale here. this system is light. it's a one. late saturday into early sunday. light showers are possible and mainly a north bay event and less than a quarter of an inch of rain and the later models have been going drier and drier. saturday night about 6:00 to midnight we're looking at the potential for wet weather but it doesn't look very promising. mid-60s to mid-70s. it's warmer. we hold the warmth on friday and we fall back sunday morning. daylight saving time ends and we have the potential for a few showers.

you'll notice some changes the next time you get a ride using the uber app. they rolled out its new app today and you'll see it in the company's video. it's trimmed minutes off the rider pickup times. you can sync the app to your address books with appointment locations showing up race adjusted destinations. riders will also learn up front how long their trip will take. uber says it could take weeks to get the new app to all of its customers. all right. are you underpaid? there's a new way to find out. mountain view's linkedin has added a new feature. this linked in video shows you how it works and the site let's
