for clinton in georgetown in washington, d.c. last night. she had been off the campaign trail since the fbi announced they were sifting through her e-mails. they were found during a sexting investigation of her estranged husband anthony weiner. as the campaigns look to stir up enthusiasm, their top supporters continue to hit as many strategic states as possible. for more insight on the surrogates and the polls, here's abc news political director rick klein. rick. >> kendis and linzie, the national polls showing hillary clinton with a slight but significant edge over donald trump right now. but the flip side of that is the battleground states when you're seeing the math actually expand slightly in favor of donald trump. trump, as he makes his foray into blue state territory, actually has a few more paths than he did a few days ago to the magic number of 270 electoral votes. this is also a big period of time for the surrogates. people vouching for the campaign on the democratic side, crisscrossing the country including, of course, both obamas spending significant

our political team will be here all night and into the early morning hours. a person of interest has spoken with police in mississippi about the torching of a black church. arson destroyed hopewell missionary baptist church in greenville tuesday night. the words "vote trump" were spray painted on the building. authorities say a man spoke with them on wednesday and on thursday. detectives say he came in voluntarily. more than $200,000 has been raised to repair the church. in afghanistan dozens of civilians were killed during a joint u.s./afghan raid targeting the taliban. now officials are trying to figure out exactly what went wrong here. some of those civilian casualties may have been caused by air strikes backing up afghan and u.s. troops under fire. now, the targets of the raid, two senior taliban commanders, were killed along with 63 other insurgents. two u.s. soldiers were killed in separate incidents. the battle for the city of mosul is intensifying. iraqi troops have begun their assault into more urban areas to

force out isis. the fight for control of the city could take several months. earlier this week iraqi forces entered the city limits for the very first time in more than two years. there is a speed bump in great britain's brexit plans. britain's high court says the government needs a vote from parliament to begin exit negotiations under the european union. britain's government has asked for that ruling to be overturned. the british supreme court will hear the case next month. prime minister theresa may has vowed that brexit talks will begin by march. if you're a little skittish about your investments, it's probably best to just ignore them at least for now. the dow starts the trading day down 29 points. the nasdaq is off 47 and the s&p 500 starting 9 points lower than the previous day. now, here's the big deal about all of this. thursday marked eight down days in a row for stocks, and if the s&p closes lower today, it'll be its first nine-session losing streak since 1980.

the 3,000-room resort is set to re-open this morning. a terrifying smash and grab captured on surveillance cameras in miami. the robbers used sledgehammers to flash display cases and remove jewelry. one of them fired his weapon at a display case. they were captured on camera running from the scene and getting away in a white minivan. it's not known at this point the amount of cash and jewelry that was taken. police are searching for those suspects. a new phone scam involves government agencies and gift cards. the caller claims to represent the irs, fbi or someone else and threatens legal action or arrest unless a fine is paid. the victim is then told to make a payment using gift cards often for the apple itunes store. government agencies never seek payment using gift cards. when we come back, season over. an ivy league school takes swift action against one of its teams canceling the season. but first the frightening story of a missing woman found alive in deplorable conditions.
