oakland police say several people were taken to the hospital. police say many of the victims are in stable condition. no arrests have been made. a man and a woman are under arrest in connection to a death of a woman who was found dead in a park on thursday. the body of 21-year-old karla ramirez-segoviano was found in an east oakland park. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the details. >> reporter: friends and family gathered at karla ramirez-segoviano's home. a friend who worked with her came to pay his respects. he said he also knows one of the suspects. >> i know the girl. she used to work at kfc. it shocks me because how can a a coworker do that to another coworker? >> the coworker is named laura rodgers. laura rodgers was booked into the almeda county jail on murder charges.

karla's body was found around noon on thursday. investigators say karla had been badly beaten, stabbed and burned. her family has been distraught since she disappeared earlier this week. karla's said it's been awful for all of them, especially having to watch her parents in pain. karla was in the almeda county sheriff's department explorer's program. a deputy has known her since she started three years ago. >> i'm hanging in there. it's difficult. probably one of the hardest things i've had to deal with. >> investigators say they don't believe her connection to the sheriff's department was part of the motive for her murder. abc7 news. >> we are just three days until election day and beyonce and jay-z was with hillary clinton yesterday and donald trump was in pennsylvania. both are vying for votes in battleground states that are

that's near soda springs. there's no indication any of the campers are related to the investigation. abc7 news was in oakland as hundreds of people marched in solidarity with a protest in north dakota last night. that's where a $3.7 billion pipeline project is being built. members of the standing rock sioux nation feared it would prison the water supply and destroy native land. they wanted to bring attention to it. >> clearly it's a case of an environmental race to the enth degree. people are opposing it at all levels. >> this week the president suggested rerouting the pipeline. the army corps of engineers will make the final decision. a san francisco police officer who was nearly killed after being shot in the head is back home this morning. a mentally ill man shot kevin downs three weeks ago. yesterday he visited the police station, and sfpd cares tweeted this picture of him with his

fellow officers. earlier yesterday the sheriff and deputies from santa clara county visited him at the medical center in san jose. he's been doing in his rehappen there and he's optimistic about his future. >> he's in amazing spirits and he's working hard to get back to 100% so he can return to the san francisco police department. that's his intention. >> downs is still partially paralyzed in his right leg. he will continue with daily physical therapy sessions at home. with just days to go until election day, a former south bay mayor said he's worried about voter fraud. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story. >> reporter: mayor steve rice got some unexpected mail ahead of the primary election in june. >> i received a ballot for my moth who are passed away about a year a before and also for my son who moved away a year before as well.

a former ucf surgeon is in jail related to 99 charges to illegal narcotics prescriptions. police arrested christopher owens on thursday after a five-month investigation. he was a faculty member at the university of san francisco v.a. medical center. he was fired and ucsf released this statement: "ucsf takes this very seriously and urges the entire staff to be aware of signs of opioid use and report it confidentially." the contra costa sheriff's department said they will charge an officer with a misdemeanor. connections to charges of jasmine abuslin have been investigated for seven months. some are felonies, but they say that's not the case here. >> based on her own statements, the sexual interactions she had with police officers in contra costa county was when she was over 18.

throw section a.l. west interactions were consensual. >> the misdemeanor charge is for a retired oakland police captain who is now in his 80s. prosecuors say he paid for sex with abuslin and will be charged with soliciting a prostitute. >> the marin county sheriff said a skimmer device was found as a gas station in unincorporated mill valley. a gas station employee first noticed the skimmer on thursday. they say it was put there during the night. skimmer devices are used to steal personal information and credit card information. some use bluetooth technology so the thieves can access the data remotely. happening today, at&t park will be transformed into a field of science dreams for the sixth annual bay area science festival discovery day. there will be hundreds of science exhibits and games and experience from leading science and technology organizations from across the bay area. this year the festival will encourage kids to explore curiosity. it runs from 10:00 to 4:00 today at at&t park.

6:13 is our time. >> there are so many great schools in the san francisco bay area, but not every school is acknowledged by the u.s. department of education. on tuesday sun valley elementary in san rafael will be awarded a blue ribbon, the highest honor given to a school. abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez tells us what makes them great. >> reporter: you know when a school is located on happy lane there's a good chance things are probably going well for students and teachers. >> we never want to stop learning and growing and that makes this an exciting places to be. >> reporter: in the case of sun valley elementary, school life is going so well, they will soon receive a blue ribbon. a blue ribbon is the highest achievement for any school. this year the u.s. department of education will award blue ribbons to 279 public schools nationwide.

>> the award received shows the little school that could finally did. in san rafael, lyanne melendez, abc7 news >> abc7 news was in san leandro yesterday as dozens of volunteers fixed up a park that was deemed unsafe. they helped install a kaboom playground at grover cleveland park. the park was nearly 25 years old and the nearest other park is over a mile away. playground at the park. playground is based on a design be created by children and will encourage physical activity and creative thinking. kaboom is a nonprofit that has opened more than 16,000 playgrounds nationwide. state wildlife officials are putting dungeness crab back on the table just in time for thanksgiving. the recreational crab fishing season opens today. last year a toxin in the crabs delayed the opening for several months. this year's cooler temperatures and steady rain are good news

chris. >> lisa, thank you. in south carolina new information revealed in the case of a rescued woman who was held captive for months, chained inside a storage container. police returned to the scene yesterday and discovered human remains on the property. the suspect, a realtor, was in court. we have more on why authorities say it might not be the end of it. >> reporter: the grisly find in the woods, an unidentified body and the search for victims. the suspect is appearing in court. >> the charge i have before you is kidnapping. >> reporter: charged in the kidnapping of kayla brown, who was held captive for two months, rescued from a shipping could be takenner on his property. >> she witnessed him shooting her boyfriend. >> she tells police her boyfriend was killed at the hands of the suspect. police came here searching.

they heard desperate banging from a shipping container during a search of his property. brown was found inside a second metal crate, chained by the neck and ankle. the 30-year-old who recently cleaned homes for the local real estate agent is now recovering in the hospital. of the suspect's mother telling abc news, just shoot me, that's all i can say. i'm so, so sorry. i just can't believe this. >> he has not entered a plea in this case, but the solicitor said he was convicted as a teenager of kidnapping and rape. investigators will be here searching through the weekend. abc news, woodrow, south carolina. >> knew this morning, donald trump is talking about his plan to move our country in a new direction. in the weekly republican address, trump discussed what he will do in his first 100 days as president, if elected. it includes creating millions of new jobs and rebuilding the military. trump said it isn't just a campaign, but a movement to return the power to the american people. >> i'm asking for your vote and your help in electing a

6:33 is our time. there's more bad news for samsung. the company has been reeling from the reports of exploding cell phones, as many of you know. now 2.8 million samsung washing machines are being recalled. there have been more than 700 reported cases of samsung top-loading washers coming apart when operated at high-speed. the tops are blowing off, endangering consumers. >> i do the laundry in my family. i have two young boys. this would scare the heck out of me, which is why we hope parents and others take advantage of this recall. >> the recall applies to 34 different models of samsung washers sold since 2011. if you have one in your home, you are eligible for a free in-home repair kit, a rebate or a new washer of any brand. if you bought your samsung in the past 30 days, you can get a full refund. in the south bay there are new details regarding a san jose woman who was busted for selling fake makeup to unsuspecting customers. it's a story you will see only on abc7 news.

>> welcome back, everyone. san francisco is putting the halt on cars speeding through golden gate park. mayor ed lee helped place the last speed hump on the road. ten humps have been installed between crossover drive and the great highway. it's been one of the city's most dangerous roads. a cyclist was killed there in june by a speeding car. >> people routinely are traveling 7 to 9 miles above the speed limit on this street and that's during the day. it's quite likely faster at night. the speed humps will slow people down. >> the speed humps are expected to lower speeds in some sections of the road from 40 to 20 miles
