>> even though most of them are still too young to vote. 2,000 high school students in berkeley walked out of school in response to the election results. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. thanks for joining us. many people across the bay area refused to hide their anger and frustration following last night's election results. >> president-elect trump as well as hillary clinton attempted to quell some of those bitter feelings today each hoping for a new beginning following one of the most divisive elections in recent history. >> it is time for us to come together as one united people. >> donald trump is going to be our president. we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead. >> we have team coverage on the protests tonight. >> let's begin with abc 7 reporter melanie woodrow in san francisco. melanie? >> reporter: in the last couple of minutes we've seen this crowd multiply and take a look. it went from a couple of people that were here to possibly hundreds. we're at market and fifth and,

of course, not only are these protesters that are here specifically for this rally, this anti-trump rally and then you have all the people that are here along market street who are perhaps heading home from work or shopping and they are moving across the street to join this rally, and this was organized in part by answer, the answer coalition, act now to stop war and end racism. you can see many people here with signs, lots of people taking pictures and video. we have been speaking with people all morning today along market street and many of them feeling sadness, anger and frustration. others telling people to be a trump supporter in california in, san francisco specifically is to be in the minority today. we spoke with one of the answer coalition organizers who says that this is going to be a peaceful march. he also says this is just the beginning. >> every time he comes out to the street it's going to be a

protest. every time, you know, maybe the republicans understood it that's how they are vetoing everything, what people are going to do is now we'll take it to the streets because that's where the real power is. >> back live now here on market street and fifth and we're up to 1,000 people who are expected for the anti-trump rally and not only the people out here to protest their feelings and to march this evening and all the other people heading home from work and those that are coming out to see what the commotion coming out here. again, organizers telling us that this might be a peaceful march and should that change and lots of law enforcement on hand tonight. >> melanie, thanks. sky 7 is live right now over the trump protest happening at frank

ogawa plaza. supposed to get under way at 5:00. students walked out all over the bay area. teenagers from two schools in oakland and students rallying in richmond and the biggest protest at berkeley high school, as many as 2,000 students walked out there. >> abc 7 news anchor joins live from where the protests will get under way in about an hour. >> those worried about the president-elect's immigration policy and earlier there were a pair of protests, peaceful here on the uc berkeley campus and one by berkeley high students. >> the american-born daughter of mexican immigrants. she's both furious and terrified what have will happen when president trump takes office. >> it's real scary to me because my family can be separated.

this is something that actually affects me personally and it's -- i cannot stand for this. >> reporter: that's why she and a couple thousand of her classmates left class this morning for the short walk to the uc berkeley campus where angry students gathered around and vented. >> he's racist. he's sexist against women and muslim, too, but -- >> reporter: school administrators started getting hints on social media last night that students were thinking about protesting the election results this morning. since berkeley high has a history of protests and social acttism administrators quickly got on board. >> i'm a parent and i'm a citizen and i didn't have a lot of inspiring words. i'm scared and freaked out about this. >> about 2,000 of the school's 3,000 students went on the march accompanied by four staff members. the rest stayed in class. a group representing

undocumented uc berkeley students held their own silent protest >> there's a whole community that will fight for us, for what we believe in, to protect the most marginalized parts of our communities. >> reporter: even those most opposed to the trump presidency said at some point we'll all have to come together and heal the divisions that separate us. in berkeley, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> city crews in oakland spent the morning cleaning up from last night's demonstrations over the presidential election. about it-2-50 marched up and down broadway starting around 11:45 last night and protesters broke windows and five businesses and set garbage on fire while shouting not my president. donald trump doesn't take office until january 20th and groups he's targeted during the campaign, they have made it more difficult to deliver on his campaign promises. david louie is live in san jose with more on that and a protest

is about to stop nearby. >> that's right, kristen, the rally here outside the martin luther king library at fourth and san fernando is just now starting to get organized. it's been organized by the san jose peace and justice center along with allied groups making knew of the new trump administration including universal health care and also the issue of immigration reform. now let's remember president-elect trump for a bunch of campaign promises. >> however, opposition is already surfacing that make it difficult for him to deliver on some of them. he's adamant about building the way, a way to block undocumented immigrants from coming in from mexico. >> something we can fight back and stop that and turn things around so that the country can hopefully follow california's lead is being a welcoming and inclusive space. >> a ban on muslims from

entering the u.s. a director of council on american-islamic relations. the number and opportunity of allies is at this point countless. it's just a matter of working past our anxiety and fear. >> mr. trump vows to repeal obamacare and to undo trade agreements and impose tariffs on imports and trading partners will then slap imports on american-made goods. >> we'd be negatively impacting the lives and livelihoods of 45 million americans and their families and forgetting that jobs tied to trade pay 18% more on average than those jobs that don't. >> in his victory speech the next president also vowed mavis spending on road, bridge and highway infrastructure, but he also wants to cut taxes. that could lead to deficit spending and higher national debt. delivering on campaign promises might not be easy. in san jose. david louie, abc 7 news.

>> a top republican party leader in california says she's hopeful that both sides can come together following what was one of the nastiest campaigns in memory. >> once the campaign is over, you know, presidents usually post and start governing as opposed to dwelling in the past and the obama/clinton campaign was pretty vicious and yet they worked together after the election so it's just -- that's just a part what have happens in politics. >> trump is expected to move quickly to assemble the team that will have the confidence of people on both side of the aisle. in the south bay residents had a whole range of emotions about the outcome last night. >> i'm happy? >> new president? >> why is that? >> and he's not a politician, a business man, and he promised to feed the people, something she never did. >> a lot of things can you fear about but i don't want to let that take control either so wait and see. >> but it is what it is, you know. just got to deal with it for the next four freaking years. i mean, it can't be that bad,

right? >> an anti-trump protest got a homeowner in hot water. take a look at that flag. the owner tells abc 7 news he put the nazi flag up as a tongue in cheek protest to draw comparisons between trump and what he calls horrible regimes from the past. neighbors weren't thrilled. they thought he was supporting white supremacists. >> i think there's so many things going on today that people feel. if you wake up and you're a woman, a jew, a gay person, a latino, it doesn't feel good today and so that to me is very provocative. >> the homeowner took the nazi flag down and then look replaced it with a california gay pride flag. >> well, cheering for the first female president until they weren't. >> just ahead, as hillary clinton concedes the race, we look at the people who wished they could have done more. and when it comes to state propositions, the bay area is almost as divided as the

i we worked with pg&eof to save energy because wenie. wanted to help the school. they would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didn't cut off the light. the teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. so they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights! those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. we actually saved $50,000. and that's just one school, two semesters, three girls. together, we're building a better california.

prop 64 is the measure to legalize and regulate medical marijuana. it won with more than 55% saying yes and 44% voting no. let's look at proposition 67, a ban on single-use plastic bags. that's a tighter race. voters approved it 52% to 48%, while many cities already have a ban in place california now becomes the first to implement a statewide ban. so let's take a closer look at some of how the bay area

counties voted. interesting to take a being loo. look at the red one. sol ha no county, the only one in our region to say no to the plastic bag ban and, of course, is won. hard to throw that up. it's a little small. 75% in san francisco county said yes. in 2007 they became -- there's the propositions from last night. >> in a concession speech hillary clinton called for a show of unity and tried to console supporters. >> this loss hurts, but, please, never stop believing that fighting for was right is worth it. >> the disappointment among democrats is strong.

lyanne is live to tell us who failed her. >> grief-stricken and sideswiped, incredulous, not how my -- not my words dan but how one clinton support er felt. women voters didn't feel they could support hillary clinton the way she hoped for and african-american voters didn't show up the same way they did for president obama. >> this is not the outcome that we wanted or that we worked so hard for. >> hillary clinton supporters are echoing that sentiment today. >> i don't feel like as a volunteer i could have done much more. i think the clinton campaign did a wonderful job. >> at the same time, they are trying to understand what factors contributed to her defeat. for example, clinton did better among trump among women but not enough to make a difference. >> a lot of women have not a clue. a lot of women don't want to be outgoing and liberated. >> it seems clinton failed to

energize minorities the same way president obama did and an abc 7 news exit poll show mild 93% of african-americans voted for mr. obama in 2012 and 88 did for clinton in this election and despite the comments regarding mexicans, trump got more support among his panics than his predecessor mitt romney four years ago. third-party candidates also change the outcome in this very clear race. >> we're seeing final outcomes of 1 to 2 points accept rapting trump and clinton with three to five points going to third parties. >> this is a shock, but there's so much we can do. >> the focus is now on the 2018 mid-term elections. in the san francisco.

university of california officials are reassuring nervous students that yesterday's election results will not impact diversity and inclusion on all of its campuses. janet napolitano and university chancellors issued a statement saying, quote, diversity is central to our mission and we remain absolutely committed to serving all members of our community and add hearing to the principles against intolerance. congresswoman jackie spear at san francisco state this morning. the peninsula democrat spoke to political science students about the election and told them not to be disillusioned and to learn
