trump protests erupt in about 20 cities across the country. >> and growing in downtown los angeles, we've been keeping an eye on this demonstration. thousands of people pouring onto the 101 freeway overnight blocking traffic in both directions for several hours. police have arrested more than a dozen demonstrators there. >> large crowds also rallied against trump's election in new york, chicago, dallas and seattle with police making arrests in nearly every city. we went to one of those protests here in manhattan. overnight protesters hit the streets from coast to coast, seattle, chicago, new york. [ chanting "no donald trump" ] >> reporter: thousands of people marched in at least ten cities speaking out against president-elect donald trump. >> i'm here to show solidarity to people who have been affected by the hatred that donald trump's rhetoric has invigorated in this country. >> reporter: here in manhattan crowds chanted things like dump trump and new york hates trump as they blocked the entrance of trump tower where the president-elect was set to be home at the time. >> i'm a republican. i'm a woman.

i have never come out to a protest and i've never felt so passionately about anything being wrong in my life. as a hispanic woman i don't feel safe in this country anymore. >> reporter: in california demonstrators gathered on the 101 in los angeles shutting down the freeway, and in oakland people set multiple fires on city streets forcing police in riot gear to move in and use tear gear. >> i don't want a president that represents everything that's negative about this world. i would rather have a president that's positive and peaceful. >> reporter: and in the nation's capital. [ chanting "no trump, no kkk" ] >> reporter: people gathered in washington, d.c. and marched outside the newly opened trump hotel. >> i come from a family of political refugees from cuba and i'm very grateful to this country for having accepted us. and i'm terrified. >> the raw emotions there, more than 24 hours after those election results and president obama today is welcoming president-elect donald trump to the white house in hopes of

ensuring a successful transition after his victory. >> and it might be a little bit awkward. trump has questioned the president's birthplace and vowed to repeal obamacare and the president has repeatedly called trump unfit to take his job but even with all of that and with his legacy on the line, obama now says that he is rooting for trump to unite the country. abc's elizabeth hur has the latest from washington. >> reporter: this morning, donald trump is making his first trip to washington as the new president-elect promising to be a president for all americans. >> to all republicans and democrats and independents across this nation, i say it is time for us to come together as one united people. >> reporter: trump will be the nation's 45th president after beating hillary clinton who hoped to make history and now urging her followers to support her former opponent. >> this is painful and it will

be for a long time. but i want you to remember this, our campaign was never about one person or even one election. it was about the country we love and about building an america that's hopeful, inclusive and big hearted. we have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought. donald trump is going to be our president. we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead. >> reporter: president obama is echoing that message inviting his successor to the white house. >> it is no secret that the president-elect and i have some pretty significant differences. we are now all rooting for his success and uniting and leading the country. the peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy. and over the next few months we are going to show that to the world. >> reporter: and so we now have 71 days to go until inauguration

but that transition starts today and trump is not only meeting with president obama but also speaker ryan. kendis and diane, back to you. >> yes, and the first lady and the first lady-in-waiting will be meeting separately as well. elizabeth hur in washington for us. before the meeting paul ryan credited trump with saving the majorities in the house and senate. >> now, trump's transition team has already held its first post-election meeting and launched its official website greatagain.gov and trump is now facing the daunting task of filling out his cabinet as speculation swirls about who will get those prime positions. here's abc's mary bruce. >> reporter: with donald trump headed to the white house and the gop in solid control of capitol hill, top republicans took a victory lap. >> this is the most incredible political feat i have seen in my lifetime. >> reporter: his cabinet in waiting may include familiar names like top surrogates rudy giuliani for attorney general or newt gingrich for secretary of state. trump has outlined a jam-packed

first 100 days. the top order of business, repeal and replace obamacare, but what that will look like is unclear. 20 million americans have gained coverage under president obama's signature law. >> believe me, we'll get rid of that. i've been saying it for years. >> reporter: trump has also promised middle class families a big tax cut, 35%. but it's unknown how he'll pay for it. >> and that's what they can use and that money will go back into the economy. >> reporter: on border security -- [ chanting "build that wall" ] >> reporter: -- trump has vowed to suspend immigration from regions linked to terrorism and impose what he calls extreme vetting. >> radical islamic terror is right around the corner, we have to be so tough, so smart, so vigilant. >> reporter: trump is also eager to fill that seat on the supreme court vacant since february with a conservative justice and could get other chances to appoint more justices. mary bruce, abc news, janesville, wisconsin. and world leaders are reacting to donald trump's victory.

russian president vladimir putin says he's looking forward to easing tensions with the u.s. the president-elect took criticism for praising putin on the campaign trail. the russian leader wants to restore fully fledged relations after being at odds over russia's role in the syrian conflict. and mexico's president says that he and the president-elect have agreed to meet during the transition period. trump, of course, has promised to build a wall along the mexican border and make mexico pay for it. well, enrique pena nieto says the pair will discuss a relationship between the two nations. they spoke in august when trump made a quick visit to mexico city. and then there is german chancellor angela merkel who issued a reminder as she congratulated trump in a statement she said germany and america are connected by a number of values including democracy, freedom and the dignity of man. merkel promised close cooperation on the basis of those values. and we'll call this one a

little quirk of scheduling, as we mentioned. president obama is set to meet today with president-elect donald trump. >> so a few hours later president obama welcomes lebron james and the nba champion cleveland cavaliers to the white house. james was an outspoken supporter of hillary clinton's campaign even appearing with her. >> and you might remember ohio governor john kasich who opposed trump in the republican primaries, well, he will also be with the cavaliers, but they're not likely to cross paths with the trumps. >> assuming the conversations will be different. >> i think just trying to escort people in one entrance, coming in another. >> exactly. >> we don't want any awkward altercations. all right. still ahead, the new link between smartphones and poor sleep. and the other surprising factor in this year's election. the sudden bounceback for the markets. what will happen on wall street today? plus, the dozens of lawsuits that president-elect trump will likely face connected to his businesses.

well, breaking overnight the search is on in seattle for a gunman who opened fire on a crowd outside a 7-eleven. two people were critically injured in the incident, which police believe was a result of an argument. they say it had nothing to do with the anti-trump protests nearby. and it's the beginning of the end for isis in one of iraq's largest cities. that is at least according to one diplomat who is describing the battle to liberate mosul in that way. the u.n. envoy for iraq says steady progress is being made in liberating the city from the islamic state's so-called caliphate, however, reports say isis is forcing thousands of civilians to stay in mosul to be used as human shields. and two marine fighter jet

this fire in western new york. plumes of black smoke filled the air over the former bethlehem steel plant in lackawanna. flames also spread to three adjacent buildings. luckily no injuries have been reported. >> some dramatic scenes there. and we should tell you if you're driving today, morning road conditions, well, you can expect a few scattered showers in northern new york and vermont. showers and a few storms are possible in southern and western texas. returning to our breaking news this morning, protests against donald trump's election have broken out in about 20 cities across the country. >> the protest in downtown los angeles made for a wild scene. thousands stopping traffic on that major freeway you see there. there were more than a dozen arrests there as well as in new york city. at least 10,000 people rallied against trump outside his midtown manhattan headquarters and at another of his properties. well, trump spent much of his campaign deriding hillary clinton over her e-mail investigation, even after she was cleared. >> but as president-elect trump prepares to take office, it

overseas figures. and ethics experts say his plan to let his children run his empire as though it were a blind trust is not blind at all. brian ross, abc news, new york. >> and one more election note from the closely watched senate race in new hampshire. it's been decided by just over a thousand votes republican kelly ayotte has conceded the race to her democratic challenger governor maggie hassan. now, the race cost about $120 million and considered a staggering amount for such a small state. brad pitt has been cleared following an investigation by child services in los angeles. pitt was accused by estranged wife angelina jolie of abusing their son on board the family's private jet. jolie filed for divorce after the incident saying she did it for the good of her family. the couple share six children and are still sorting out those details. a health alert now about cell phones and sleep problems. another study has found people who used their phones a lot got less sleep and slept less well and people who use their phones right before bed had a harder time falling asleep.
