thousands of students hit the streets to protest the results of the presidential election. this is video over san francisco. and this is san jose where the crowds weren't as big, but just as passionate. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. >> the protests came only days after the election of president-elect donald trump. and you can see exactly where the student protests were and really all across the bay area. lyanne melendez is live in san francisco where one of the biggest protests has wrapped up. >> reporter: some students have decided to hang away, others joined late.

afc well organized with many conversations that will last for a very long time. there was never a thought of stopping these high school students from taking to the streets of san francisco led by anger and disappointment, they spoke from their hearts. >> our country is broken. if we can allow someone like trump to get in office, our country is messed up. >> reporter: the school district kept a watch full eye. >> it started in social media and spread to all the high schools and they're just having their voice heard. >> it's not technically p an authorized school district event, it's -- these are all actions that the students are taking organically themselves. >> reporter: the school district knows it may lose out on thousands of dollars from the state by having these students walk out. but that is a conversation they will have at a later date. >> i know many of us are not at voting age, but we do have voices and by doing this, we're

showing the world that we do not approve of our president-elect. >> reporter: the world is watching. the canadian college students were surprised to see students protesting an election. >> we just deal with it. and try to make the best of it. yes, we're angry, but there is no protesting. >> reporter: students from some of the city's private schools also joined in and made to city hall. parents were received text messages from their city letting them know they were marching. >> this has been an uplifting moment. >> this campaign has been built on hate and fear, so we're trying to spread love, and build unity. >> reporter: and we don't expect anymore protests at least not from high school students this this evening. now, i tell you, some of them walked for miles and if it's any consolation, parents should know that they will sleep well tonight. i'm live from city hall, lyanne

melendez, abc 7 news. and students from several high schools marched peacefully through the streets of concord today. >> and in hayward, students from several high schools gathered together to march in protest in front of the hay ward city hall. >> several miles north, one of our employees captured this video of students marching and chanting he's not our president. >> oakland's mayor and many residents are expressing outrage today other than the damage that was done by anti-trump demonstrators. police used tear gas to disburse a building that tagged buildings and broke windows and did looting. >> i share the anger, but i know that it is no way to protest this election to trash the most progressive diverse inclusive city in america.

>> brings out the bad again every time there is a protest or something, they destroy the city. >> i think it's awful that they break glass and destroy property. >> in all 16 businesses were damaged and three police officers were injured by bottles and rocks that were thrown. and it's not just in the bay area.michigan, there have been demonstrations around the nation showing the division between those who elected trump and those who didn't want him in the white house. >> want to take you live now, we have a live shot from los angeles where protesters are blocking interstate 10. you can see the police on top of the overpass there. in this view i actually do not see where the protesters are located, but you can see that the police are prepared for whatever takes place in l.a. >> and we streamed sky 7 live during today's student protest in san francisco. that live stream was viewed more than 2.5 million times.

year, abc 7 is teaming up with its partners in a program designed to save lives. >> r >> air rec theric thomas shows u can benefit. >> reporter: we team up to spread the word about the need if smoke alarms. >> nearly half of the nation's fire deaths occur in the 4% of homes that do not the super a smoke detector. >> reporter: another partner donates 3,000 smoke alarms to operation 7 save a life each year. but this year, they're upping the ante. >> we will donate 4,000 smoke alarms with a ten year sealeded in battery. and 400 carbon monoxide alarms. >> reporter: that is up from 300 carbon monoxide alarms in previous years. and it's music to our ears.

>> they're being increasing their commitment to the bay area and we couldn't be happier to bring that to the bay area. >> reporter: in the fire service, we're very aware that smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors save lives. >> reporter: home depot will help with distributing the alarms. >> with the holidays coming, colder weather, being prepared in case of a fire is huge. >> reporter: that is because holiday cooking and tree decorating carry higher fire risks p according to the u.s. administration, 2291 people were killed in home fires last year, only 33 had working smoke alarms. and suggestions about where to place those alarms has changed. >> make sure that you have a smoke alarm in every sleeping room. and in the hallway outside of the bedrooms. >> reporter: when it comes to keeping your family safe, just having a smoke alarm on each floor isn't good enough anymore.

just nice. partly cloudy skies in the afternoon, as we go into saturday, a chance of a sprinkle is confined to the north bay. outside of the north bay, you will notice just a mixture of sunshine and clouds out there and sunshine, we are completely dry, more sunshine and a mild afternoon. so future weather, want to show you the weak system saturday. it falls apart as it reaches the golden gates. so sprinkle perhaps in the north bay. outside of the north bay, we will be completely dry. that will not be the story with the next more robust system tuesday night. we're tracking a light storm, but the good news is the rain does look to be widespread starting in the north bay and sinking to the south bay. said jest probably wednesday morning and total rainfall about a tenth to half an inch of moisture. so future weather we'll jump ahead into your tuesday evening. 8:00 tuesday next week, rain begins in the north bay. overnight into early wednesday, the green goes wide spread.

throughout the bay area. san francisco unified school district estimates that more than 1,000 high school students from across the city walked out of class today expressing their disappointment with the election results. sky 7 was over market street in the embarcadero as students walked through traffic this morning. the large group later gathered in front of city hall. and this student protest took place in east san jose and in concord, wayne freedman snapped a photo of high schoolers protesting there. a teacher at college park high school in pleasant hill was jumped and injured during a walkout. and now we have a live look at another protest that is under way. this one is located in philadelphia where it's obviously at nighttime. you can see hundreds out in the streets marching there. coming up at 5:00, a closer look at more of the protests expected tonight right here in the bay area. police are trying to figure

out if a woman talked at san jose state university the day after the elect if it took place because she was wearing a traditional muslim head scarf known as a hijab. matt keller spoke with the victim. >> reporter: this sophomore wear as hijab on campus. >> this is my religion, this is my life. this represents everything who i am as a person. >> reporter: yesterday afternoon the day after the presidential election, someone else used her scarf as a weapon. while on the third floor of the west garage on campus. >> someone came behind me, pulled my scarf all the way back. my scarf is tied around my neck, so when he did, it choked me and when he was trying to pull me down, my back kind of arched in a very different way. and i was in pain and for that pain to stop, i kind of pulled forward and when i did that, he let go and i fell. >> reporter: the man didn't say a word and ran off.

she says he was wearing a black hoodie sweat shirt and khakis. >> we believe that our hijab protects us from every day evils. and for someone to pull it like it's just a sweater or some other type of cloth that sgnts mean anything is just martbreaking. >> reporter: many muslim women are debating whether or not to wear a hijab or head scarf when out in public. the political climate has them concerned and they believe a donald trump presidency may embroil more people. >> some of of the p.s actually were concerned for their children, so they either told them to stay home or to also take off their scarf. >> i want my rights protected. i want other people's right protected. and i want to live safely. that is all i want. >> reporter: san jose state says no arrests have been made and

that campus officials are monitoring the situation. at san jose state, matt keller, abc 7. >> and the president of san jose state spoke with us about the stint and said she's really troubled about young muslim women deciding not to the wear hair thhijabs. >> i've been incredibly proud, they have said this is a part of their identity and they are proud of who they are and they will be true to who they are and they don't fear for that. they are aware, they are walking in groups, they are watching out for each other, but they don't want to give in in to that fear. >> president of the school says this is the only incident she knows of right now, but the school is asking in anybody knows of if i othany others. donald trump set to go on trial in a lawsuit against his defunct university. it begins november 28.

and the judge is the judge that strump being trumping a accused of bias. the lawsuit says people were pressured to spend on mentor ships that didn't come through. a federal grand jury has indicted aaron schock of illinois on 24 counts of wire fraud and theft of funds. the 35-year-old had been under investigation after a spending scandal. schock resigned in 2015 amid intensifying scrutiny over his finances. a man suspected of ambushing two pennsylvania police officers have been found dead of a self inflicted injury after killing a police officer and wounding

another. ma marci gonzalez has more. >> reporter: those gunshots aimed at officers early morning as they noresponded to domestic call. >> i don't know his mindset. >> reporter: one office killed, another injured. >> on the ground. >> reporter: the spray of bullets relentless as backup arrived. officers finally made their way in, fining the bodies of a woman and a man investigators say took his own life. >> we haven't completed the background information yet, but he was known to officer. >> reporter: they call it an ambush as they more than their colleague, a 7 year veteran of the force. >> he was a loving husband, loving father. he was always willing to do whatever he had to do. just one of those guys that
