violater two landed safely after the pilot took charge. we have the story. >> this is not the kind of announcement you usually hear from an airline pilot. >> as people, we have the common decency to respect each other's decisions, and to get along on this flight. >> the man who shot the video by phone told me the announcement came after an argument between two passengers. >> he said at least i get to keep my guns and she told him how could you say that to a brown person? because she's african-american. >> they were arguing about the election. the united airlines spokesman said flight attendants separated the two passengers before the pilot's announcement. this is the latest out burse since tuesday. in pittsburgh neighbors snapped a picture of this banner. it includes the "n" word. the pittsburgh police said it violates large science on

private property and ordered them to remove it. >> i think it's natural to see eruptions in the beginning, but the real question is what will after overtime. the leaders need to take a very importan role. he praised the pilot for handling the incident on the plane. >> if there is a problem with this, a rant or rave, there is another flight tomorrow. don't be on this one. i hope that's clear. [chanting.] abc7 was was along as about 100 people took over the busy street with a police escort. monaco showed the group marching down market street. it was peaceful. aaron green shared this video in santa cruz last night. u. c. santa cruz students marched shouting "not my president." now to oakland where unlike the last three nights, last night's protest remained peaceful. these videos show the heavy police presence. officers say there were no arrests. >> after spending days dealing defeat, hillary clinton made her hillary clinton made her first public appearance last night and and she came bearing gifts for her staffers.

>> and 80 opened back-up this morning after it was shut down last night. a victim crashes his vehicle after being shot but is expected to survive. eastbound lanes were closed through the evening commute. the gunman is still on the loose. a drunk driver who ran a red light and killed a man and then smashed into an abc7 news van talked to abc7 news from jail. a man died as he left saturday night. >> the 61-year-old man died as he left city hall thursday night. leslie brinkley has the story. >> in an instant, doug andreen was killed crossing the street to get pizza. this vehicle ran the red light, hitting cars and pushing the body under the abc7 news van parked on the corner. the photographer and reporter were both treated at the hospital and released. grief counselors will be on hand on monday here at san jose city hall where doug worked for ten years as an accountant in the public works department. he lived nearby in this apartment complex with his

beloved cat tinkerbell. his family and friends told me he spent a lot of time at the san jose animal care center, where they will direct donation toss help rescue cats there. they talked about the accident today. >> i'm sorry about it. i mean, i'm sorry. i drank a couple beers and i wasn't paying attention. >> he said he has two previous dui arrests. >> if i could take everything back, i should have never -- i should have never drank. >> andreen lost everything. in san jose, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> happening now, if you are driving in san francisco, you probably want to avoid van ness avenue because a major construction project is underway to make the street safer but now it's just causing delays. katie explains. >> reporter: what does a uber driver wish for?

>> if we could get wider street and less cars. [laughter] >> reporter: instead the transportation agency will be reducing van ness avenue from three lanes in both directions to two starting monday. eventually center lanes will be designated "bus only." definitely get in the way, the way, especially if they have their tail hanging in, don't pull all the way in. that's problematic to get around. >> renderings show what the project will look like when completed. it's similar to the muni trains on third street. the results should mean a time savings of about 15 minutes. this weekend left turns on van ness will be removed at all but three intersections. >> i just feel it will cause way too much traffic. people already drive crazy in the city. i feel like it would be total chaos. >> one of the leadings causes of collisions throughout the city are left turns. by eliminating some of the left turns along the corridor, we are making the city safer as well.

the commute across the bay bridge is one of the worst commutes in the nation. if you drive it, you know it is so slow. abc7 morning traffic reporter alexis smith and sky 7 conducted our own bay bridge time challenge during one morning commute. let's see lane 1, fast track or cash? >> it's a mind-numbing crawl to get to the bay bridge toll plaza in the morning. bumper to bumper, people we've in and out within traffic. >> what should take 15 minutes sometimes takes at much as an hour. >> everybody is cut being everybody else off. >> it's getting worst. lately the fast track lane is backed up more than the cash lane. >> we wanted to know what was really happening on the commute. i got in five seven to give us a view from above. >> all the lanes take fast track. some still accept cash too and sometimes the cash lanes seem shorter. which is really faster? we did a comparison and rigged two abc7 news cars with cameras and put cameras on the roofs so we could track them.

we wanted to see how long it took to get through the toll plaza. they both left at the same time. the blue 7 is going through the cash lanes, and we've got the red 7 going through the fast track lanes. >> minutes in, so far looks like cash is moving a little bit faster. >> what's keeping the red 7, the fast track car behind? it had to cross over the cash lanes to get over to the fast track lanes in the center. >> now he's getting over. our cash car's lead doesn't last long. >> looks like we have the fast track car, the red 7 catching up and passing the blue, the cash car. >> nearly 35 minutes into our commute, traffic really slows down and it's the drivers in the cash lanes creating the problem. leave the cash lane and cutting off the other drivers. >> our cash driver is also feeling the pinch. >> he's getting cut off in the cash lanes because they are all trying to get over into the fast track so it's affecting the cash driver too.

>> by the time our challenge is over, the fast track lane have just about five minutes faster than the cash lane. a time savings, but maybe not as much as you think. >> that's really consistent with what we've found over the years. >> john goodwin is with the metropolitan transportation commission. >> evidently there's some folks who seem to believe that their time is more valuable than others. >> he said those drivers who cut over at the last minute play a big part in slowing down traffic. >> there's no real advantage gained by the folks, as we call them, the dive bombers. >> they said they have tried to prevent that by installing flexible pylons, but those dive bombers just run them over. they are looking a way to eliminate the cash option from the bridge to speed things up. the golden gate bridge stopped taking cash in 2013 and since then the flow has improved. there's no set date when the bay bridge might stop taking

cash. >> there are a number of things we need to do because the traffic volumes are so much greater on the bay bridge? >> the meantime drivers are looking for relief, and leaving earlier won't help them. they said the business just time on the bay bridge is between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. a 75% increase since 2010. alexis smith, abc7 news. >> don't forget, alexis has your commute covered every morning starting at 4:30 a.m. the person in charge of keeping bart safe is retiring. our media partners at the bay area news group said kenton raney will make december 31st his last day. he joined the department after a police officer shot and killed mr. grant. hillary clinton may have just lost the presidential election but the clintons are not done with politics. the "new york post" reports that her daughter, chelsea clip, is being groomed to run for congress.

drizzle and an isolated sprinkle over through 580 in richmond you can see a little sprinkle activity. had is san jose. we are already looking into a pretty nice morning. 6:44 is your sunrise. temperatures in the 50s here. the atmosphere is dryer in the south bay. it's 59 half moon bay. the golden gate bridge, three quarter mile visibility from the coast to right here. so this is where we have a little bit of a tricky pavement out there. 56 in santa rosa. looking at 57 by the delta. 59 in novato. wind is not much after factor. dewpoints anywhere from the upper 40s where that means it's nice and dry. it's feeling chillier to where it's feeling muggier along the coast and also in some of the areas from perhaps novato to san carlos. overall a partly cloudy afternoon. this is santa cruz where you will notice it's cloudy, but today it's going to be a dry afternoon. in fact, it's a very mild numbers headed your way the next couple of days.

partly cloudy this afternoon with more sunshine the next few days. we are looking at a couple of opportunities of rain. nothing too exciting there. as we go through the forecast hour by hour, you will notice the cloud cover thinning out by noontime even in the north bay. by the afternoon it's partly cloudy. temperatures are above average. we should see about 65 in san jose. today forecasting a high of 72. we've got upper 60s all along the bay shore here. it should be just about in the mid-60s. so it's mild for november. changes arrive tomorrow with sunnier conditions. we should warm up even a few more degrees. into monday very little change. so first couple of days of the week looking dry. here's you are a next chance of rain. tuesday night 7:00 you see we have some returns from sonoma, clear lake. what what happens. it pushes out toward sacramento. looks like we aren't left with much, maybe a few hundreds into wednesday morning. the clear sky forecasted tomorrow night, we have a full

abc7 partnering with the local firefighters and makers and manufacturers of smoke alarms to make this a saver alarms to make this a safer holiday season for low-income and elderly bay area residents. abc7 news anchor eric thomas has the story. >> reporter: the big news from this year's operation 7 save a life event, a renewed commitment from the biggest manufacture of smoke alarms.

>> they are going to donate 4,000 smoke alarms with the ten-year sealed-in battery, and 400 carbon monoxide alarms. are running into. 60 in the city. 57 in san jose. from the golden gate bridge. there's your fog. reduced visibility. mid-50s for santa rosa and the delta with 58 in livermore. so all the way down toward santa cruz. a few peaks of sun. 60s to near 70 by noontime. skies becoming partly cloudy right on through the afternoon. it's a nice, warmer, sunnier afternoon than yesterday. sun sets at 5:00 p.m. then we will talk about our chance of rain for the upcoming work week in just a few minutes. cornell. >> lisa, thank you. happening today, sting will be on stage at the theater in paris, the site of last year's deadly isis attacks. this will be the first concert in the theater since people were killed there. that was a year ago tomorrow. in all 183 people were killed in three separate attacks in paris that day. sting said the concert will be a way to remember and honor those who lost their lives in the november 13th attacks. and in florida another response to a terrorist attack.

the come-out-with-pride festival will be held in orlando where a gunman killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in june. a benefit concert will be held for the victims of the attack of the pulse nightclub. earlier the city of orlando bought pulse for $200 million. the city plans to turn it into a memorial to honor the memories of the victims. the election has some people speaking out with their wallets, especially for those unhappy with the outcome. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom explains what they are doing about it. >> reporter: volunteers are clearing out the clinton campaign's local headquarters. >> i'm very sad, understandably. >> going from angry and jumping to what can we do next? so i started donating to planned parenthood and i will plan to volunteer in schools in san francisco. >> it's a sentiment echoed by these volunteers, the san francisco children's art center isn't the only place they are hoping to lend a hand. >> i would volunteer for like planned parenthood because i think that's such an important

organization. >> planned parenthood has seen an outpouring of support. >> i donate to planned parenthood. >> why would you want to do that? >> it's the least i can do to support women's health, which is under attack. >> zone nations are up they said. other charities are asking for dnations in the wake of the election but one group barely needed to ask. >> tuesday night i couldn't sleep. wednesday morning i was laying in bed and couldn't stand it any longer. i woke up, went online and made a donation to the aclu. >> in the 24 hours after the election, the american civil liberties union said they received almost a million dollars in donations, the single biggest fundraising day in their history. donations increased by 700 percent, crash being the website. why them? >> because they protect our constitution. that's their main goal and i feel that's what is in most in peril with our president elect. >> they are also expressing themselves with symbols. and there are other symbols that are not so subtle.

>> this "dissent is patriotic" t-shirt was among the best selling item after the election. so was this pocket constitution. they said they sold more than $15,000 in merchandise to folks looking to make a statement. >> putting the word out that the government is on notice and we will be watching. >> in san francisco, johnathan bloom, abc7 news. new this morning, president obama is reminding us that our military members and veterans serve as an example of what our nation tries to be every day. in his weekly radio address, the president recognized the service and sacrifice of our nation's military and called it the single most diverse institution in the country. our veterans don't always go around telling stories of their heroism, so it is up to us to ask, to listen, to tell those stories for them, and to live in our own lives the values for which they were prepared to give theirs. >> president obama added we must acknowledge that we can never serve our military and veterans quite the same way they serve us.

happening today, a special dedication in antioch. -- i mean in pleasanton. the city will officially unavailable a memorial to the 21 pleasanton area residents who died serving their country. this artist rendition of the memorial shows a life-size bronze statue of a world war ii veteran kneeling in respect to fallen comrades. ♪ oh say can you see >> the south bay started honoring veterans early yesterday morning in milpitas. in san jose veteran's day became an early thanksgiving for more than 500 veterans abc7 news reporter david louie introduces us to one grateful vet. >> july 23rd i was homeless, today i'm not. >> reporter: nothing for symbolic than seeing him hold keys to a unit at this apartment building. he's a twelve-year army vet. he will move in next week. >> this is just the beginning

because now the real journey begins. staying focused, going to school, continue working. >> eaves the 510th homeless vet in santa clara county to get housing, one year after san jose and the county launched a program called "all the quay home." >> some of the landlords renting to vets are vets themselves. >> i'm doing this because i am my brother's keeper and i'm a member of the armed services. and i have been blessed. so why not share that blessing? >> this is the studio apartment he rented to a vet. >> while the number 510 is an impressive figure, there are many more to go. there are still more than 6,000 people homeless who are not veterans living this santa clara county. the mayor sam ricardo believes housing vets will lead to a wider program. while 510 out of 700 vets have been placed, the challenge isn't over. >> every month more are being pushed out into the streets

halloween is long over but it is never too early for a treat. who doesn't-like that, rather? abc news was at the oakland zoo yesterday as the bears and elephants enjoyed leftovers from generous east bay pumpkin patches. one gulp for the elephants there. the sun bears seem to be preferring peanut butter, though. >> they might be going for the easier stuff first. the peanut butter and better treats. but they will always come back to it. there's nothing really left of after we go back into the yard to clean up. >> a prethanksgiving feast is an annual treat for the critters and for all the zoo--goers, as well. at the san francisco zoo it was

hard-to-navigate day in parts of the bay. mostly foggy toward the coast. partly cloudy this afternoon. more sunshine tomorrow into monday. tuesday some changes begin. we will track them for you. starting out with today, look at all the cloud cover. as we go through the next few hours, they really thin out quickly. we will get the into a partly cloudy afternoon. once again, temperatures on the mild side. a wider perspective and we have partly cloudy skies for southern california. 82 there with 630 in the northern syria. mid-60s monterey and yosemite at 68 degrees. pretty nice statewide. in the south bay low 70s for you santa clara, menlo park partly cloudy. we hold on to that with mid-60s in the city. north bay maybe a sprinkle and about 68 in petaluma. 71 napa. near east bay 66 berkeley. 71 and you head inland and the averages in the mid-to upper 60s. we are well above that in parts of the bay.

tomorrow it's sunnier. we will look for mid-70s and even more upper 60s from oakland to richmond to redwood city. average high for san jose is 675. it's warm for november. then very little change more monday. more sunshine. more numbers above average. let's get to tuesday. this is weakening and it will head off toward the sierra nevada. just a slight chance in the north bay. the accuweather seven-day forecast allowing for the clouds to thin out, giving us more afternoon sun. low 60s coast, low 70s inland. mainly sunny for sunday. and monday milder. tuesday afternoon we will increase the clouds in the north bay. maybe a few light showers. by wednesday just a chance. cooler thursday and friday. downloading our app you will see perhaps if we can beef up the system midweek. but at this point it's not looking too likely. but a nice weekend. >> yeah. i do love the warm weather but i miss the rain. >> i know. we want it all, right?

>> come an back. all right, lisa. thank you. a couple in san francisco's millennium tower plans on boycotting playing property taxes. they say the city came up short on the skyscraper. vic lee has a story you will see only on 7. >> i think somebody has to take a stand and hold the city responsible. pat and jerry dodson live on the 42nd lore of of the millennium tower. a luxury two-bedroom unit with killer views. last year the dodsons and 50 other homeowners asked the city assessor, carmen chu, to lower their property taxes because the high rise had unexpectedly sunk 16 inches and tilted 2 inches. it was the dodson's unit where we rolled the golf ball down the uneven floor toward the direction the building was leaning the dodson's paid $2.1 million for their condo three years ago. they told the assessor the value they believe now is around

$400,000. >> some people put zero, some people put a dollar. if you are unable to sell something, it's hard to believe it has any value at the time. >> they are yet to hear from the assessor's office. currently two homeowner lawsuits are pending against the developers. the dodsons are now considering their own legal action against them. supervisor aaron peskin has held hearings which revealed that the building inspection department knew about the settling problems even before units were sold but gave developer the green light anyway. because of that the dodsons have decided to withhold paying their property taxes to the city. >> it's like being mugged. if two people mugged you. in this case it's the millennium partners and the city. i'm not sure the victim is supposed to pay the mugger. >> the dodsons say they are more than happy to pay their property taxes once the city takes responsibility and the tower is repaired. vic lee, abc7 news

happening today a fun event for kids all ages as the walnut creek ice rink holds their annual children's winter festival. this marks the official opening of the rink's 12th season. today's first 250 guests free admission and skates and for the rest of the day. it's just the five bucks to get in. the rink is located at civic park. the festival runs from 11:00 to 1:00, but the rink is open until 11:00 tonight. bring your skates and your sunscreen today, right? >> isn't that crazy? low 70s out there. they are used to that. we've had several years of drought. right now mid-60s in the city. partly to mostly cloudy there. sunshine around the bay in low 70s. concord, fremont and palo alto this afternoon. accuweather seven-day forecast, we are sunnier and warmer the next couple of days. increasing clouds tuesday with maybe some north bay sprinkles into wednesday. we are much cooler after that. you notice we are looking at relatively dry conditions for the weekend. >> all right. we want to get the rain back
