live, where you live, this is abc 7 news. a violent night across some cities across the u.s. as live anti-trump protests break out. good evening, i'm eric thomas, there were also protests here in the bay area for the fifth straight night, but they have been largely peaceful. let's talk to sergio quintana. >> reporter: eric so far there has been no violence or vandalism tonight. we have actually monitored a couple of different groups, one in oakley and berkeley, and one tried to get onto a couple of different freeways tonight. this group of demonstrators headed towards the i-90 ramps in downtown, but they were met with

california patrol officers. they have been loud and fast moving, but much smaller than past nights. for some local business owners the demonstrations are putting them in a tough light. >> a lot of the demonstrators come from oakland, so just because the demonstrations stop, doesn't mean it won't affect us. >> reporter: customers often stay away for months after protests, on a typical saturday night his place would have been packed. today's demonstrations around the bay area including oakland have been peaceful. in palo alto, a group of hillary clinton supporters held a candlelight vigil. and earlier they marched from the castro to city hall. it was the second demonstration of the bday, with others saying they support the rights.

>> i know he will take away immigrants rights and many other groups of people, including women. >> at the restaurant in oakland, the demonstrations often pass by here. >> i would do anything for the city. and the fact that my business is down i'm just going to deal with that. >> reporter: it is just something he will have to manage through. sergio quintana, abc 7 news. thousands protested against donald trump all across america today, many demonstrating outside new york city's trump tower. in indianapolis, police arrested seven people after two officers were hurt by people throwing rocks at them. officers arrested two in portland, and in oregon's biggest city last night. and the largest donald trump protest to date in los angeles happened this afternoon with police saying 8,000 people filled the streets downtown. demonstrators forced officers to shut down freeways on the off

and on ramps. demonstrators marched peacefully. last night, police arrested about 187 people when a thousand people marched. new details on a heated exchange on an airplane. >> if anybody has a problem with this, that needs to vent or rant or rave, there is another flight tomorrow. >> that was a pilot calming down passengers who were taking off from sfo. the 13-year-old palo alto student said when a man asked her what she thought of donald trump, he said i get to keep my guns, her mother is an immigrant from india and didn't want to talk politics on the plane. the mom and daughter later asked to move seats the get away from

defeat. news came from two major donors who joined her on a post-election conference call. and staying on top of the transition, they can get updates as they happen. and drivers getting used to big changes on one of san francisco's biggest streets this evening. they were on van ness, where the turns are eliminated. it's part of the van ness improvement project, starting on tuesday van ness will go from three lanes in each direction to just two. crews will install dedicated bus lanes in the other lane. and animal activists are fighting back at lake tahoe. >> to take an established bear from his own territory and move him to a completely unknown territory. he doesn't know where the food and water is. that is a crime against nature.

a bay area musical institution is dropping a planned overseas tour to stay right here in the u.s. and try to heal the wounds left behind by the election. abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington has more. >> reporter: the san francisco gay men's chorus seen in this video from their website was planning to take their tour to far-off places like cuba and china. but so >> in response to the election, we have work here to do at home. >> the chorus is now planning to tour the red states instead. places like mississippi, alabama, and tennessee, and visit communities faced with discrimination. >> we want to go to those places that are still strongholds of this kind of discrimination and

and pleasanton has a new way to honor those who served to protect us. abc 7 news was at the city-owned pioneer cemetery for the dedication of the new memorial, featuring a world war ii marine kneeling to honor his comrades. >> the time is long over due that we here in pleasanton pay their proper respects to the men and women who defended us and our freedom. >> that memorial took two years to complete and cost $120,000, most of the money raised was from local veterans. and a largely unknown group of veterans were honored today, the fourth class of the army intelligence school is credited with shortening world war ii by two years.
