>> good morning to you. it's sunday, november 13th. i'm cornell barnard, in for carolyn tyler. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. >> good morning. >> good morning, cornell. it's foggy behind you but that's not the case everywhere. the fog lined up i long the shoreline but it's also in the valleys. from vollmer peak you can see in the distance patchy fog. it's 61 in oakland, 55 half moon bay, and 59 mountain view. from mt. tam, yes, you can see it out there. still patchy, dense fog. low 60s concord and the visibility in miles has been reduced all morning long in the north bay.

at the coast it's lower and then it will clear. you look at san jose, that's where it was particularly foggy earlier, but already looking at some brighter conditions there with improvement. this morning look for the sun to take over with 50s and 60s by noontime. by the afternoon we will enjoy mid-70s in our warmest spots. this is the warmest day of the week. subtle changes arrive tomorrow and then we talk about a much, much cooler outlook coming up. cornell. >> okay, lisa. thank you >> right now waves from a tsunami are washing ashore in new zealand. island snags was struck by massive magnitude 7.8 earthquake around midnight local time. so far minor damage reported around the cities of wellington and christ church. [alarms] >> if the aftershocks didn't, this did. the tsunami alarm was sounded shortly after the quake struck,

telling people to seek higher ground. one man said the earthquake was scary. >> it got more and more intense. i thought, okay, this is getting pretty serious. yeah, it continued on and on and on. yeah, it sort of got quite consuming. >> very direry there. the tsunami, we are told, is not expect today hit california. developing news on the peninsula. one person is dead, three others injured after their bmw crashed into a wood tree off of 101. the survivors suffered minor to major injuries. the c hp said it happened just aft 1 it:00 hamm on the northbound off-ramp of 101. the chp believes everyone, including the driver, was drinking alcohol. the scene has been cleared. and more protests against donald trump are planned in the bay area. one of the more unique is at oakland's lake merritt. they are expected to join hands

around lake merit. it begins at 3:00, a peaceful again app demonstration, a mirrors the mood of yesterday's protests. sergio quintana has details. >> reporter: this group of demonstrators head toward downtown rams in downtown oakland but they were met by lines of highway california patrol officers. they were loud and moving but smaller than those organized in past nights. for some business owners, the protests are putting them in a tough situation. >> a lot of our guests come from outside of oakland. after the demonstrations stops, it doesn't mean our guests come back immediately. >> michael said he supports the protesters' message, but it is concerning to see neighboring businesses damaged this week. and customers often stay away months after the protests. on a typical saturday night his place would have been packed. in palo alto a group of hillary clinton supporters held a vigil. a group at san francisco city hall did the same.

earlier they marched from the castro to city hall. it was the second demonstration of the day, with those participating saying they are concerned about civil rights under president-elect donald trump. >> we are going to need to fight every single step he makes along the way to take away our rights. i know he would take away immigrants' rights. he will take a way the rights of many other people, including women. >> the demonstrations often pass by here. >> i would do anything for the city. and the fact that my business is down, i'm just going to deal with that. >> it's just something he will have to manage through. sergio quintana, abc7 news. >> while thousands of people protested against trump on saturday, many demonstrated peacefully for hours outside new york city's trump tower. on the vegas strip 7 people were arrested in a protest that numbered more than 1,000 people. and many rallied in front of the trump international hotel.

up in portland, police took 19 people into custody after protests there turned rowdy. a news cameraman was attacked, but he is okay. police used flash-bang grenades to clear protesters off of streets. over 50 demonstrators have been arrested this week alone in portland >> and the boy lot tries to calm people on his airplane. >>. >>. >> if you have a problem with this, there's another flight tomorrow. >> that that was the pilot. one talked to us from mexico. she said it started when a man sitting next to her mediocrity asked us what she thought about donald trump. and then he told her, quote, at least i get to keep my guns, and then her mother asked him,

quote, why are you saying this to a brown woman? she said her mom is an indian immigrant. of the man continued to make angry, racist and hateful comments with the mom and daughter eventually asking to change seats to get away from him. >> my mom tried to de-escalate, look, i don't want to talk to you about this. >> obviously i was indignant, and i felt on the verge of tears but unable to actually cry life goes on. i mean, racism is -- it sucks and it's there and it sucks that it's there. >> she said the man later apologized. her mother and the man's wife then ended up hugging each other. one bay area lawmaker is outraged after seeing people holding confederate flags at petaluma's veteran's day parade. the congressman took this picture as he rode in a vintage jeep on friday. you can see one man holding the confederate flag. the other two flags appear to be the army of virginia battle flag and one reading "the south will rise again." and at least two wore donald

an overseas music tour has been dropped in favor of staying right here in the u.s., trying to heal the wounds left behind by last tuesday's election results. abc news reporter elissa harrington has the story. ♪ >> the san francisco gay men's chorus seen in this video from their website was planning to take their 40th anniversary tour to far-off places like china and cuba. >> in response to the election, we decided we have as much work to do at home as we would do abroad. >> the director rehearses with some of the members at their castro street office. ♪ >> the chorus is now planning to tour the red states instead. places like mississippi, alabama and tennessee, and visit communities faced with discrimination. >> we want to go to those places that are still strongholds of this style of discrimination and bigotry and bring our voice and encourage the people there with our music and also hopefully change some hearts and minds. >> the tour will begin in the summer of 2018, right before midterm elections. chorus members say their songs are a form of activism.

pipeline's construction. they say he would endanger sacred sites and drinking water sources and accuse the federal government of violating the clean water act. as the number of protesters continue to grow, volunteers drove here all the way from north carolina to help and are building temporary shelters that can protect the protesters from the harsh north dakota winters. >> they can handle 100 miles per hour winds, really heavy snow loads, and it seems like that's some of what they are getting here. >> the shelters are called yurts and they are made of canvas, wood and reflective foil for insulation. >> on this veteran's day weekend, pleasanton has a new way to honor those who serve and protect us. ♪ >> yesterday a dedication ceremony was held at the new pleasanton veterans memorial at the cemetery. it's pioneer cemetery.

gilroy 55. at the airport no delays this morning. we had them yesterday. 51 in santa rosa, 55 livermore. 60 by the delta. and concord at 61. we dropped off into the upper 40s in the inland east valleys. and still this morning look how chilly it is compared to yesterday at this sometime. that's what happens when the due points get lower and lower. the atmosphere cools, and we are waking up to not only the foggy conditions in parts of san francisco, but the cooler morning. so areas of dense fog. look for sunny and mild conditions today and tomorrow. but then a slight chance of showers arrives for the north bay on tuesday, spreading south into wednesday. it will be very, very weak. so as we go through your forecast the hour by hour, here's the low cloud deck mainly in the north bay. by 11:00 everyone is sunny and we will enjoy that throughout the afternoon. the sun sets right before 5:00. we will be looking almost as

warm conditions tomorrow. but we will see some more temperatures begin to cool around the bay. 70s will prevail in our inland valleys. but then as we get into tuesday, this is where the front will begin to arrive. that's going to drop off the temperatures, bring a chance of showers and the breeze is going to kick up considerably. so this is where it stands right now. our latest forecast model showing that the cloud deck will be with us, but the rain line stays just around clear lake, right in through tuesday night. so just a slight chance of showers and another piece of energy heads our way on wednesday. and then it's out of here until we see perhaps another bit of rain by next weekend. but this is what it's going to amount to. very, very little. that's why we don't have it on the storm impact scale, maybe ..01. 75 today in san jose. look for low 70s from milpitas. redwood city about 71 for you.

>> good morning to you. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. hey, lisa >> hey, cornell. good morning to you. as we check out this gorgeous shot you see the fog floating just beneath the towers at about 740 feet. fog is dense in spots and creating some problems in and around the bay. 58 in the city. no problems at the airport. 59 mountain view. san jose clearing up at 56. half moon bay 55. you can see the fog in the distance from mt. tam. 51 in santa rosa where it's quite foggy, as well as napa at 58. concord 61 and the visibility in miles less than a quarter mile at the coast.

petaluma still very foggy. hayward is improving. we look for the fog to continue to evaporate right through the 11:00 hour. we are left with tons of sunshine. 60s and 70s. temperatures once again above average as much as 10 degrees above average in the south bay. we will talk details in your neighborhood coming up. >> okay, lisa, thank you. we have developing news out of lafayette with where pg&e is dealing with a power outage. here is pg&e's map of where the outage is. it's located in orange. it's near the lafayette reservoir and covers much of st. mary's road. we just got off the phone with the utility. they said 465 customers are still without power. over 4800 customers were without power at the peek of the outage at about 8:30. pg&e has no idea why the power went out. crews are now driving around trying to find a cause. >> today is the one-year anniversary of the terror attacks in paris that killed 130 people. now a national day of commemoration.

where new "no left turn" signs were put in overnight. all left turns will be eliminated except for three locations. part of the van ness improvement project starting on tuesday. it will go from three lanes in each direction to two. crews will be installing new dedicated bus lanes in the middle of of the road yesterday morning we found out what lane is faster to the bay bridge toll plaza, fast track or cash. once you make it through the toll plaza, you still have the deal with the metering lights. alexis smith found out why some have the inside advantage.

>> reporter: ask my commuter and they will tell you how much they hate the bay bridge metering lights. >> they are the cause of traffic if they let it go flow-free like everywhere else we would be fine. >> i understand what they are trying to do by sometimes it makes things worse. >> i believe they are very, very poorly run and they really cause a lot of congestion. >> but are they? from sky 7 you can see what happens. cars come through, as many as 16 lanes at the toll plaza. that narrows to 12 at the metering lights and just down to just 5 lights across the bridge. we wanted to know how much time those metering lights may be costing drivers. so we used sky 7 to find out we conducted our own time challenge with two abc7 news cars. the car with the red 7 took the fast track lane. >> the blue car, the cash car approaching the tollbooth right now. >> despite the stop and go traffic, the red car played it from the toll plaza to the metering lights in three minutes. not bad. the cash lane took nearly four times as long, 11 minutes. >> the metering lights cycle a little faster for the fast track only lanes. >> john goodwin is with the metropolitan transportation commission. he said fast track drivers are given an advantage.

the no-merge lanes and faster metering lights. >> we need to increase the through-put, make the whole operation more efficient for cash payers and fast track customers. >> the metering lights were installed in 1974 to help keep the bay bridge from being gridlocked. since then the bay area grew by 2.3 million people and there's been only one significant change to the lights. that was a minor hardware and software upgrade in 1980. now, 36 years later, bay area traffic managers are looking to upgrade those blinking lights. >> inside caltran's traffic management center in oakland they keep close tabs on the bay area roadways. when traffic increases on the bay bridge, they turn on the metering lights manually. >> all we do is we punch in the metering rate and hit the send button, and the lights will start cycling. >> as you can see, it's pretty low tech. now the mtc and caltrans are working on a $7 million upgrade of the bay bridge metering light. when complete, they say traffic will move more smoothly on to the bridge. the new lights will take advantage of the latest smart metering technology. sensors embedded on the highway on-ramp talk to sensors on the highway. together they keep traffic

hundreds of people and dogs turned out at port beach in southwestern england to join mark woods and his dog, walnut. woods tweeted, "walk with walnut" and invited others to join them before the terminally-ill whippet was put to sleep. the crowd stood closely together as wood cradled walnut. despite his illness, he lived to a ripe old age of 18. that is so cool that everyone came out for the walk. >> you said that story i don't know how many times and it's still sad every time you say it. but he had a long life. >> he did have a long life. >> nice day for a dog walk, but this morning it was particularly foggy as we look outside from our sutro tower camera. you see a nice sweep of the bay there. it's low-lying, and it is at the airport dense in spots. it will take another two hours or so to really clear all together. it's 58 in san francisco. 61 in oakland. and even san jose at 56. some foggy conditions. so we will talk about our mild november weather and when it's all going to change in the week

stubborn. it could take a couple hours more around the airport. this is the view from the east bay hills camera atop vollmer peak. right now cool, mid-50s but you were down to about 47, 48 earlier. by the delta it's 60 and you see the mid-and upper 50s in the north bay. so overall, everyone was much, much cooler this morning. anywhere from 4 to 9 degrees cooler right now compared to yesterday. so we will be looking a the a lot of sunshine here in the city, and it's been nice. if you are thinking it's been a little warm for november, you are right. we are anywhere from about three to ten degrees above average. so we still have our areas of dense fog. a chilly morning. you may have slept through most of it. it is beginning to turn around. a lot of sunshine this afternoon and a slight chance of showers moves into the north bay on tuesday. it could last until wednesday. you probably heard about the super moon by now. you may have noticed how bright

it was last night. it hasn't been this close since about 70 years. so it should be a spectacular sight. rising before 5:00 tonight. you will be able to see it right on through tomorrow. some patchy fog tonight, especially along the coast. mid-70s for highs in sacramento. monterey 67. look at that, los angeles 89 degrees and near 70 in yosemite. i want the to show you how much cooler it's going to be if you are planning the week ahead. this is livermore. but all of the locations around the bay will feature the warmest temperature today. very similar tomorrow. then look what happens as the front pushed through. maybe relatively dry but it will be breezy, bringing much, much colder air. feeling like the season. but all we need now is a little bit of rain, right? look how far south it gets. not very far at all. by 7:00 on tuesday, here's another piece of energy until wednesday. so maybe just some spotty light showers. and we will be looking at, once again, numbers 10 degrees above average in the south bay.
