now from abc7, live breaking news. >> shots fired. >> 771 go ahead. >> shots fired. >> breaking news tonight in san jose where police are scouring a neighborhood trying to find a man who shot at two police officers. thankfully the two officers were not hurt. this is a live picture from the scene. the shooting happened after 7:30 in east san jose. police say the officers were on foot when they ran into a group of men. the men ran off, but one person returned and fired several rounds at the officers. right now you are seeing these live pictures and police are canvassing the neighborhood looking for a hispanic man in his 20s wearing dark clothing. we will bring you updates during this newscast and throughout our news app. enable push alerts for the latest information. good evening. i'm eric thomas and thanks for joining us.

our other top story in his first big interview since the election donald trump allowed to follow through on his campaign promises on immigration. maybe not the way he said during the campaign. abc7 news' sergio has the story. sergio? >> tomorrow morning mayor ed leigh will be at city hall leading a group of people reaffirming san francisco as a sanctury city. it is in direct response to the election of donald trump and his agenda and an effort to ease concerns of immigrants in the bay area. >> in an extended interview on cbs' 60 minutes donald trump renewed his pledge on immigration. >> people who have criminal records, we have a lot of these people. we are getting them out of our country. >> according to the department of homeland security and immigration studies in washington, d.c. trump's figure may include immigrants in the u.s. who are here

legally. immigration has caused people in the bay area to protest against the president-elect. >> a lot of families have two parents undocumented. i am here to fight for them. >> there is a lot of fear. it is understandable. there will not be massive deportations. >> he is an immigration attorney and he said the president's powers are limited and everybody needs to know their rights when dealing with i'm bracing dash sh ad immigration agents. >> people are protected by the u.s. constitution. they don't have to talk to officers or let them in their homes. >> reporter: in the "60 minutes" interview they were concerned about law abiding citizens. >> after everything is secured we will make a determination on the people you are talking about who are terrific people. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump says building a border wall is also still a priority, but congression alleyeders say it is not part of their agenda.

abc7 news. >> peaceful protests took place today. one of the largest at lake merritt in oakland where they gathered around the lake and held hands. it was organized as a peaceful event to show displeasure with the outcome of the election. >> it is a great way to make your voice heard so everybody can participate. we we have seen the violence and the destruction of property. it drew activistses and families and east bay community groups. the event drew thousands of protesters. and a mural is covered with messages of hope, peace and understanding. a member of the team used the # abc7 news to share the pictures with us. protesters took to the streets of san francisco as well. sky 7 was over a group that gathered in the castro and

marched to the foot of castro street. they were peaceful as they made their way through the mission and downtown. >> a south bay teacher will return to work. he was put on paid leave after a parent complained. lilian kim is live in the newsroom with the story. >> mr. navarro received a few threats, but overall the support is overwhelming. the mountain view teacher was confronted by the administration last week two days after the election. >> i was instructed to leave the campus. >> reporter: what happened to frank navarro made headlines that spread nationwide. the 40-year veteran of mountain view high school was told to go home while the administration investigated a complaint from a parent. among them calling trump hitler which he claimed he never said. >> what i said is there is a parallel between trump and

hitler between 1930 to 1933. hitler claimed he would make germany great again and donald trump said i will make america great again. >> mr. navarro said he was accused of using an inappropriate word trump used to describe a woman's genitals. he denied that, but said trump was accused of masogony and gave examples. >> i feel free academic appropriate speech is being squashed and that's a serious issue. >> reporter: 20,000 people agreed. they signed a petition on change.org showing their support. the superintendent says mr. navarro has the all clear to return to school. he said mr. navarro was absent for one afternoon with full pay while the investigation was completed. he was reinstated when we believe it was safe for students. >> i believe i did the right

thing. >> reporter: lilian kim, abc7 news. president-elect donald trump made his first political appointments. he named previs as chief of staff and ceobanum as the chief strategist. trump had his first sit down interview. he spoke to supporters and the protesters. >> and i will say it to the cameras, stop it. >> he had a strong message to his supporters to stop harassing minorities. the president-elect has had to hear that law seen knows and muslims are facing harassment and the protests against him sweeping the country, mr. trump hopes everyone gives him a chance. >> i think it is horrible if that is happening. i would tell them don't be afraid. >> most of the protesters supported hillary clinton who won the popular vote, but not the electoral college. that's what the presidencies as a rigged system. >> i would rather see it where

it is bear hunting season and that's always controversial. animal activists are accusing the state of nevada of trapping bears and moving them to an area where they can be hunted. tonight abc7 eye team reporter is here and what has them so concerned? >> wildlife officials have caught and moved 20 bears out of the tahoe area to the desert. they say it has nothing to do with hunting, but their own data questions the timing of the moves. this video from the nevada department of wildlife shows a bear being tranquilized after it was caught in a government trap on the eastside of lake tahoe. wildlife officials were trying to catch a bear that had broken into a truck and they said this was the wrong bear. he was hauled 75 miles away to the high desert. the team uses rubber bullets and dogs to make the bear fear humans. >> we want their last

experience with people to be a bad one. >> some animal activists say moving a bear that has grown up in a lush environment is cruel. >> he doesn't know where the food is and he doesn't know where the water is. that's a crime against nature. >> the activists believe believes the department is taking bears out of the area so they can be hunted. nevada hunters are only allowed to kill 20 bears in the fall season, but they have never taken that many. that could be because most of the bears live around lake tahoe. >> it is not an easy hunt by any means. a lot of the individuals are spending two and three weeks hunting before they get a bear. >> he runs nevada's bear program and he says he is relocating suspected it problem bears to keep people safe and not for hunting. >> it is ludicrous that anyone with common sense can read through the lines. >> no relocated tahoe bear has been killed in the hunt. >> the trans location of bears

to other suitable areas in nevada has been in our conflict policy for over 20 years. >> that may be so, but most bears are moved within the lake tahoe basin. they raise questions about whether moving bears across the desert works. in 2004 the study concluded that moving nuisance bears is not a viable option because most birrs just cross the desert and come home. after that study they showed nevada stopped transferring tahoe bears to the desert for seven years. and then when bear hunting became legal in 20 11 the department started to transfer bears again. >> it is not always successful and that by no means mean it can't be successful. >> not everyone agrees on what success with bears means. take the case of this guy who lived in the village for 10 years. >> it was a wonderful experience having this bear every afternoon. in the summer he would come

lumbering down the street. >> neighbors say the bear was trapped by mistake at an apartment complex where a different bear was seen causing trouble. >> i was really, really upset. he never had they past history issues. >> he was taken more than a hundred miles away to the desert. >> we don't want him walking around in the day in broad daylight. >> two observers were allowed to go along. >> he gave me a look like what have i done? he wasn't aggressive at all. he was confused and he didn't deserve to be put out there. >> four months later he was spotted by a research camera well south of tahoe in california. the other bear we showed you earlier was tracked by satellite collar and also reported south of tahoe. nevada wildlife officials called the bears success stories because so far they have not gone back home. but activists believe the bear should have never been moved out of the tahoe area and residents are to blame for not handling their garbage

rafael is an autumn high of 69. future tracker temperature shows if you like fall you will like tuesday. the cooler air filters in from the north. a lot of spots holding to the 60s. by wednesday it is a chilly afternoon. you can see a lot of spots struggling to even reach the 60-degree mark. the reason we have this cool air filtering in, a weak bit of energy is moving in tuesday to wednesday. there is a chance that we could see a spot area of dr. easy swell in the north -- area of drizzle. even wednesday morning right along the coast the chances there once again for a light sprinkle. future weather is showing as we head into next week and we could potentially be tracking a wetter system moving in. saturday morning in the latest guidance we got in minutes ago it has the system stalling over the area and not only on saturday, but into sunday. if this trend does continue we could be looking at a good soak of rain on saturday into sunday. we'll keep you updated.

live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> good evening. i'm eric thomas. in tonight's headlines breaking news in san jose. police are searching for a man who shot at two police officers. nobody was hurt in the incident. the officers did not return fire at the man. he is scried as hispanic and in his 20s with dark clothing. police are looking for a man who barged into a vietnamese restaurant at san pablo avenue and paimg street and demanded wallets and valuables from all of the customers. no one was hurt.

a south bay teacher who compared president-elect trump to hitler will be back at work. frank navarro was on leave after a parent complained. after an investigation the school district cleared him to go back to the classroom. and donald trump made big first appointments choosing a chief of staff and maverick conservative as his top advisor. he is easing off on one of his core campaign positions. here is abc news president arer richard cantu with the story. >> in his first big decision as president-elect he named previs as his white house chief of staff. he is chairman of the republican national committee. and he tapped his campaign ceo is a the chief strategist and senior counsel. he is the former head of conservative breitbart news and a critic of the gop establishment. trump saying steve and reinz are highly qualified leaders and worked well on the

jay it's official. >> reporter: signed to play college ball and he is just four some no wonder ari shultz is the kid with the homerun smile. ari loves baseball. he really lovers it. >> you have quite an arm. who taught you how to do that? >> i teached myself how to throw that far. >> reporter: in fact, he has been swinging a bat since he was a toddler, but he was always pretty good in front of a basketball hoop too and not to mention the winter sports. despite the hit to his health. he has been through open heart surgery multiple times. >> the toughest part is living a normal life, playing sports, golf, basketball and at the same time knowing we are waiting for a new heart and he need one. >> reporter: yet that grin is always there. >> he will wake up in the morning and say mom, i'm going to play every single sport today and he will. >> reporter: the grin was there when he met the ballplayers of assumption college in massachusetts who are part of a program called team impact granting wishes to
