morning letting them know this is in effect. life on van ness avenue will never be the same again. this morning computerers learned forthtires time that left turns are no longer allowed. some drivers are distraught. >> it's crazy and bad. >> it's not convenient but i'm sure they need do it. >> muni officials were leased of this first morning of new reality. >> we did warn people that the changes were coming and to let them know they should take alternate routes of muni if they can. there were a lot of people on muni this morning and peel are taking alternate routes. >> reporter: the plan is a little fain now or a big payoff later cars not turning left, should save a lot of time, according to transportation officials. >> it will speed things up because cars will have to wait for cars to make a left turn. they won't have to wait for buses going in and out of bus zones and increasing service along the corridor.

bringing that all together could save up to 1r5 minutes. >> reporter: while not turning left is a big change, some residents say they could envision the benefit. >> i think the left turn hold up the traffic anyway. you can always make a right and take a side street and, you know, get around that way. just go on a different street than van ness to make a turn. i don't know. i think keeping van ness moving straight makes it more efficient. >> reporter: you can still get left on broadway if you're southbound. lombard and hayes if you're northbound. but that's it. and one more heads up, they're going to be shutting down a lane on van ness, either later this week or next. it's going to be in both directions, so plan accordingly. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield. more commute news,000. cal tran is making a change to accommodate the increase in ridership between san francisco and the south bay. there's now an extra car on three lines during the southbound morning and evening commute. this morning's rush hour was the first run for the longer trains.

caltrain says it can handle now about 200 more passengers per trip. this morning commuters had to battle thick fog on their way to work. and so did our crew on sky 7. this is what they faced at the hayward executive airport, their home base, before dawn this morning. you can see the fog there and it was so thick the chopper had to be grounded. now, let's take you outside for a look at what it looks like right now. you can see san francisco, the golden gate bridge still soft in there with a blanket of gray fog. you cannot even see the first tower really. the story in the south bay though, a little clearer, starting to lift. but not much clearer. the fog is still blanketing in skyline a in h san jose as we see this live picture on interstate 280. we are keeping a close eye on the fog where you live. mike? >> thank you very much. good morning. the good news, the fog as kristen mentioned is starting to let up in some areas. visibility not in that dangerous level of a quarter mile or less but it's still causing issues here at sfo.

one hour and 31 minutes. that's a arrival's average, delay. in oakland, look at that, most visibility. quarter mile. as we look around we're up to about a mile and a quarter in san jose. a mile in petaluma. it's going to be a slow go. by the afternoon hours we will see sunshine with 50s at the coast, 60s around the bay, 70 i land. got a chance of rain in the forecast but first, got to talk about traffic. >> we sure do. >> i'm going to take you back to that same problem i've been keeping track of since 4:30. we still have the fatality investigation on going. westbound 580 is still fully closed. surface streets are still very, very congested. and we've got a five-mile backup on eastbound 80 if you're coming up from emeryville area between five to ten-mile per hour average. chp hoping to clear it by noon. hopefully we'll get some relief soon. one more sigalert. still closed.

that is due to a flipped semi, hauling a bunch of apparently pig meat. that's what chp says. hoping to clear that bun we 2:00 p.m. san francisco's elected leaders are vowing to stand up to president-elect donald trump's promise to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities. abc 7 newses with inside city hall's rotunda just a short time ago for mayor ed lee called a session of unity. the mayor and others recommitted themselves to san francisco's status as a sanctuary city. >> as one city we stand united and we will help protect all of our immigrant families in this city. >> sanctuary cities do not prosecute people solely based on their status as undocumented immigrants. last year's shooting death of pleasanton native kate steinly triggered a national debate. her her suspected shooter is an undocumented immigrant deported five times before her death.

it hasn't even been a week but we're already getting a glimpse into what a donald trump presidency might look like. and who will be alongside him in the white house. abc news reporter maggie rulely has a look at the new team and mr. trump's first major tv interview since the election. >> reporter: donald trump's first major decision as president-elect, two big hires for his new team. trump, the ultimate washington outsider hiring reince priebus to run his chief of staff. as head of the national republican committee priebus played a huge role in the decisive victory. >> we want to tell all moerns no matter who you are, religion, race, gender, we want donald trump to be your president. >> reporter: trump is also calling for america to unite. in an interview on "60 minutes" he responded to hate crimes across the country. >> i am so saddened so hear that and i say store it. >> reporter: another trump hire is only fuelling this fierce.

stephan bannon, goldman sachs banker and until recently the executive chairman of breitbart, and now a number of organizations incruding the counsel on american islamic relations are denouncing the hire. the adl saying, it's a sad day when a man who presided over the premier website of the alt-right, a loose knit group of whitalists is slated to be a senior staff member in the people's house. >> i find him not to bes the way he's being accused. it's the opposite. >> reporter: also on "60 minutes" trump appeared to soften on some of his more hard line campaign promises. now he will focus first on criminal undocumented immigrants and when it comes to same-sex marriage, that's already been decided by the supreme court. maggie rulli. art project spreading across the nation protesting president-elect trump is now in

san francisco after first popping up in oakland over the weekend. it's made out of sticky notes. abc dl 7's jessica castro spoke with some of the artists and joins us with more. >> kristen, it is called the wall of empathy. it's participatetory protest art and that means the artists are folks happen to walk by and write a message. the organizers are urging people to write about their emotions after last week's election results as a type of collective therapy. a lot of the messages i saw were messages of inclusion or some of the hashtags that have gone viral across social media and in numerous protest, messages like all lives matter or love trumps hate. >> right now a lot of people are very upset about the outcome of the election. and now more than ever i understand important for us as community to come together to make sure that we're moving forward and making progress instead of regressing. >> reporter: organizers say the post-it notes are meant to

support groups targeted by president-elect trump's campaign rhetoric. inspired by a similar project in new york. you will see the post-its at the montgomery street, 16th street, and 24th street b.a.r.t. stations and in oakland on grand avenue. jessica castro, abc7 news. the empathy wall movement comes on the heels of a weekend of peaceful protests against president-elect donald trump. in san francisco hundreds of people marched down market street yesterday disrupting traffic. sky 7 was over a group that gathered in the castro and marched to the ferry building. protesters wound their way through the mission and downtown but sfpd did not report any problems. in oakland, thousands gathered to form a human chain around lake merit sunday. they stretched around the entire lake more than three miles in all. it was a far cry from the violence we saw immediately following the election. >> i think it's a great way to make your voice heard in a way that is peacefl and non-violent, so that everybody can participate because we have

seen the violence and the destruction of, you know, property. >> the event called hands across lake merritt brought out families, children, artist, music, and several community groups. president obama is expected to hold his first news conference since the election shortly. it's set to start around 12:15 and abc news will bring it to you live in a special report. we'll also be streaming it live for you on our abc7 news app. new details now on a suicide bombing on the u.s. air base in afghanistan. abc7 news learned one of the victims was from stockton. the department of defense named 30-year-old sergeant john perry as one of the victims this morning. he was killed saturday in a blast that killed three other americans, including another service member and two contractors. 16 other u.s. service members and 1 polish soldier was injured. the taliban is claiming responsibility. students struggling to pay for college, books, and food are

rvenlgs uc and cal state officials are considering the first tuition hike in six years. the l.a. times reports it will cost cal state students $270 per

year. uc students will pay an extra $280 a year. officials say financial aid would cover most students. both systems are dealing with a growing demand to enroll more students and hire more faculty and they have to do it with a smaller share of state funding than in previous years. both governing boards will discuss the potential hikes this week. there are many college students in need. that's why the second harvest food bank is bringing food to students at san jose state university this morning. abc 7 reporter matt keller is live on campus with more on this effort. matt? >> the food arrived about 15 minutes ago. volunteers are setting it up on the i believe as. so when the students come in they can grab it and put it in their bag. this is the second time they've held a mobile pantry here at san jose state. it's become more and more popular. last month they had about 300 students involved. this time they're expecting about 600 students. the starving college students stereotype can feel a little too real sometimes. today on the san jose state

campus second harvest food bank brought 15,000 pounds of food for their mobile food pantry. ten days before thanksgiving. >> if you're hungry and you don't know where you're next meal is going to come from it affects your ability to concentrate. >> food security may be more wide spread than you think. 2014 survey at san jose state revealed 20% of students didn't eat in a day because they didn't have enough money. and 49% occasionally skipped a meal because of financial issues. >> it is difficult, especially if you do have financial issues. i know a lot of students actually go throughout the day without even eating and it's sad to have that education here but also like not being able to eat. >> reporter: to qualify for today's mobile food pantry people must be a current student with annual income below $23,540. they can fill up their bags with fresh fruit, vegetables, and groceries. >> i think it's definitely on your mind, especially working and having to go to school and just doing everything by

talk about a bright monday morning, right? behealed the supervisor moon, the brightest moon in 69 years. in case you missed it, here's what it looked like from san francisco this morning. the moon is about 30,000 miles closer to earth than usual. this is the closest it will be until the year 2034. this is the time-lapse now from roof camera of the moon rising last night. right? gorgeous. did you see it? it reached its most luminous phase about 3:30 this morning. we've gotten some great photos into the newsroom from all around the bay area. people showing their view of the super moon. you can share your pictures and video on social media #abc7now and we might use it now on or line at abcnews.com. mike, i missed it last night. i want to see it tonight. what about the fog? >> 5:40, moonrise.

be able to see it then before the fog returns. this is what it will look like. this is from jan at golden gate weather in the south bay. fantastic photographer along with being a great meteorologist. that's up in the diablo range to the east of san jose. it has a little bit of color to it because of the pollution in the atmosphere. this is the way it looked looking northeast from our east bay hills camera. that was over san pablo reservoir. that was one of the first areas that became fog-free other than inland east bay where we didn't ever have any fog. so the fog you can see it slide in the south. turn our attention to this mass of clouds. that's tomorrow's potential wet weather maker. zoom in. it's being stubborn over the water because it's hard to get the water to warm up and get the air to rise to thin it out. over land, much easier. that the why you can see it's getting clear over san francisco. once you get the water, whether it's the bay bridge, san mateo bridge, the dunbar on the

bridge, you've got to be careful. afternoon sunshine. weak cold front will bring wet spots. the weekend storm looking tricky. is it going to be a big soaker, is it not? most of your medium range models says, one's going to do one and one's going to do the other. let's focus on right now. upper 50s and near 60. the fog. but mid to upper 60s in our inland neighborhoods. we're on our way to mid and upper 60s along the coast and the bay. 70s inland. here's what's going to happen tonight. you can see the fog returning. temperatures mainly in the low to mid 50s. very mild. most of us should be in the 40s right now. as we hard through 5:00 tomorrow morning, into the lunch hour best chance of scattered rain up in the north bay. it falls apart to just sprinkles and even see a little clearing by the sunset. should be a gorgeous one. should be colorful. remember, if you post it #abc7now. notice scattered showers. with the sun irritating the atmosphere, we we could have more scattered showers wednesday afternoon. rainfall amounts, look how low.

just a couple .01 of an inch. friday evening, nothing going on. you see sat morning into the afternoon hours. even to sunday, we've got couple of waves of wet weather coming in. right now, a third of an inch in the south bay to possibly two-thirds in the north bay. that's the dryer system. that's why we have it as a one right now on our storm impact scale. the other model says a couple inches of rain are possible saturday and sunday. it's something we've got to keep an eye on. look at our high temperatures. only in the 50s and 60s. no more 70s after today. >> all right. it's been a dry november so far. >> it does. absolutely. >> thanks, mike. >> you bet. it may almost be thanksgiving but the fire danger is not over for people in southern california. you're looking at a win driven fire that broke out in the angeles national forest this morning. crews contained it to about 50 acres. forecasters tell us more warm santa ana winds will blow across the south land later this week. that of course will keep their fire danger high. a girle who's fighting back against bullies is using the
