shocking cold, whipping winds and whiteout conditions. more than 2 feet of snow and counting in parts of central new york. >> i went to bed, i woke up, it was a winter wonderland. >> reporter: slick roads and frigid temperatures in ohio. blamed for this 40-car pileup sunday night, and this inferno in new jersey sparked after high winds downed power lines. a similar scene over the weekend in northern michigan. downed power lines sparking a fire that engulfed two cars. that punishing winter weather. >> whoo, we got a whiteout! look at this. >> pushing across the northeast. >> reporter: a gateway for the snow band to set up right behind it. >> got about four inches of snow. as you can see, still coming down. >> reporter: turning roads in new york into icy parking lots. with traffic and us struggling to keep moving. still on the interstate 81, right in the heart of this lake-effect snow band. we're actually if the lighter part. a long line of cars. still going about 25 on the highway.

the hardest hit areas could get another 6 to 12 inches. you guys, these roads are ridiculously bad. we were trying to get here last night. it felt like when i was studying meteorology in indiana. strong lake-effect bands. they are going to keep going. look at this lake-effect snow advisorie advisories, and wind advisories down to virginia. you can see where the heart of the lake-effect snow and winter storm warnings are there. how much more on top of the 10 to 30 inches already on the ground? another 6 to 12. then we have to talk about the cold. because that is not just reserved for the northeast. already feeling this morning in tallahassee, subfreezing. so yes it feels like a winter blast not just there, but a lot of places, george. i'm getting blasted here downtown with 20 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts. >> i can tell. the big question on everybody's mind, packing up their cars for holiday travel. what will it mean? >> the holiday travel. the forecast. that one storm digging in from the southwest moves in. if you are anywhere from dallas up to the midwest, minnesota and parts of iowa, severe storms along the cold front in dallas.

then on wednesday, 5:00 a.m., if you're out of o'hare, something to watch. >> not just cars. air travel as well. you have more on that. everyone is watching the winter blast as they get ready to travel for the holidays. aaa expecting a million more travelers than last year. and a major airport strike could create chaos. abc's david kerley has more from new york's laguardia airport. good morning, david. >> reporter: morning, robin. we're four days into the thanksgiving travel system, and we have already seen problems. in fact, i was delayed four hours yesterday getting to new york because of wind, not snow. and then as you mentioned, a possible strike in chicago. these are contracted cabin cleaners. they clean the jet cabins. they are threatening to strike. i'm told by the airlines they'll bring in nonunion workers if there is a strike. they don't expect delays. as you mentioned, driving is the big way people will get around. wednesday through sunday. 43.5 million americans expected to hit the road. that's 800,000 more.

that's the highest level in nearly a decade, robin. >> as i said before, if you're heading to the airport, pack a lot of patience. you're going to need it. thank you, david. we move on now to the latest in the trump transition. the president-elect worked all through the weekend with job-seekers, and other visitors lining up at his new jersey golf course. more announcements coming soon, and our david wright reports from trump tower here in manhattan. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. the white house in waiting is back here on fifth avenue after that whirlwind of meetings. some major announcements expected as soon as today. at the trump national golf club all weekend, a revolving door. 21 meetings in two days. the potential jobseekers auditioning like contestants on "the apprentice." >> we're going to have a great day. great people coming. you'll see. great people. >> reporter: there were familiar faces and newcomers, too. trump seemed especially impressed by retired general james mattis, former leader of

the central demand, and he's now thought to be a front-runner for secretary of defense. >> all i can say is he is the real deal. >> reporter: trump tweeting that general james "mad dog" mattis, who is being considered for secretary of defense, was very impressive today. a true general's general. trumps a meeting with former foe, mitt romney, saturday got lots of attention, but not firm commitments. vice president-elect pence said romney is under active consideration. >> i know the president-elect was quite grateful that mitt romney came here. to trump national, and spent some time and willing to be considered for this important role at an important time in the lifetime of our nation. >> reporter: the president-elect met with one of the owners of the chicago cubs. and hollywood super-agent ari emmanuel. ♪ i'm thinking past tomorrow trump also spared time this weekend to take on the broadway hit musical, "hamilton" for the cast shoutout at the curtain call to the vice president-elect there in the audience.

>> we, sir, we are the diverse america who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us. our planet. [ cheers and applause ] our children. >> reporter: trump called the show overrated and demanded an apology for, quote, their terrible behavior to mike pence. pence said he enjoyed the show. >> i wasn't offended by what was said. i'll leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue. to say it. >> reporter: "saturday night live" taking an opportunity for a laugh. >> i heard you went to see "hamilton." how was that? >> it was good. i got a free lecture. >> i heard they booed you. >> absolutely. >> reporter: trump's transition so far is a bit of a break with tradition. normally the vetting process is shrouded in secrecy. but trump's is a bit more like speed dating. that said, he has promised to be a different sort of president, and the decisions and discussions are taking place behind closed doors, george. >> he's doing it his way. david wright, thank you. more on this from martha raddatz and cokie roberts. martha, let me begin with you.

the president-elect leaned in to general james mattis, "mad dog" mattis as a possible secretary of defense. what can you tell us about him? >> well, it's no wonder donald trump is impressed with jim matt mattis. they share a lot of the same views about the military and foreign policy. since retiring in 2013, mattis has been critical of defense cuts, of announcing draw-downs in afghanistan in advance, and the u.s. de -- detention policy, along with our approach to fi t fighting radical jihadists. saying we have not been clear about defining or dealing with terrorists. but he is beloved by troops, the kind of general that would take christmas duty watch so younger marines with families could enjoy the holidays. women in the military may have issues with where he stands on women in combat. and if he is nominated by president-elect trump, he would have to get a congressional waiver because you have to be out of uniform for seven years to serve as defense secretary. >> someone else who might need a waiver. general david petraeus.

mentioned as a possible secretary of state. also mitt romney, rudy giuliani. three individuals, and three very different messages. >> very different messages, george. we don't know a lot about what happened in there with mitt romney. as for david petraeus, i'm not sure he's under active consideration. but there was another general who recommended that trump look at him. but all very different views on things. >> in the meantime, cokie roberts, the president-elect facing more questions about his business and possible conflicts after that meeting with some indian developers who have real estate interest with donald trump earlier this week. president obama talked about that yesterday in peru, and the president-elect under some pressure from members of congress as well on this front. >> and from ethics officers of republican as well as democratic administrations saying he's got to do something about these business interests. president obama said he put all of his holdings in treasury bonds and basically said to his staff, if it sounds like fun, don't do it.

but -- and pointed out that they have not been any scandals in his administration so far. donald trump's going to have a real problem here. he criticized hillary clinton for her foundation getting contributions from foreign companies, foreign countries. the foundation at least was doing good around the world. in this case, it would be a question of somebody trying to do business to try to get some sort of special favors from the government. that could be very, very dicey. >> okay, cokie roberts, martha raddatz, thank you very much. cokie, you'll be back. to talk about that "hamilton" feud coming up, but we're moving on now. breaking news overseas. authorities arresting at least seven people in a terror raid, concerned they were plotting an attack in france. our senior justice correspondent, pierre thomas, is here in the studio with us. what do you know here, pierre? >> reporter: robin, again, seven to eight people, afghan, french, and of moroccan descent.

the concern was they were perhaps going to target a christmas celebration. perhaps a christmas market. in strasbourg. something that could play out similar to what we saw last year in paris. horrific attack. >> yes, indeed. with the holiday season coming. a lot of americans travel abroad. any threats or concerns? >> there's still that worldwide travel alert for americans, particularly in europe. here at home, no specific credible threat, but last week, officials did take note of isis talking about attacks during the holiday season. >> we have to keep an eye on that. thank you. here at home, a series of violent attacks against police officers overnight. four officers targeted. in san antonio, an officer was executed in a traffic stop. police are searching for this car right there. abc's kayna whitworth has the latest. >> reporter: overnight, a manhunt intensifying. san antonio police searching for a suspect they say killed detective benjamin marconi, a 20-year veteran of the force who was sitting in his patrol vehicle just outside police headquarters.

authorities say while he was writing a traffic ticket, this car pulled up behind him. a man getting out and shooting detective marconi twice in the head through the passenger side window. >> i've got an officer down in front of headquarters. >> reporter: the 50-year-old father of two rushed to the hospital where he passed away. >> most families would be celebrating the holidays. s.a.p.d. will be burying one of its own because of an ultimate act of cowardice by a suspect who will be caught and brought to justice. >> reporter: authorities releasing these images of possible witnesses, asking them to come forward, and overnight in st. louis, another ambush. an officer shot twice in the face while he was still wearing his seat belt. his weapon holstered. >> the officer says he saw the muzzle flashes and felt the floos glass breaking in his window as the shots came through and struck him in the head. >> reporter: the unidentified married father of three in critical but stable condition. after a city-wide manhunt, the police and the suspect exchanging gunfire. the alleged shooter killed by authority. >> this just shows the dangers

of policing, not only here in st. louis, but around the country. >> reporter: over the weekend, two more shootings, in florida and missouri. two police officers shot during traffic stops. both recovering. the manhunt continues here in san antonio where all police officers will be doing traffic stops in pairs until the situation is resolved. george. >> serious situation there. now to amy with today's other top stories. a protest that turned into a riot? >> that's right. a very tense standoff turned violent overnight near the site of the north dakota oil pipeline project. about 400 protesters tried to push their way onto a bridge, lighting about a dozen fires there and using slingshots to fire rocks at police. the officers fired back with water cannons in those freezing temperatures. they also used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. one officer was injured. one protester has been arrested.

welling -- well, there are new claims this morning that chemical weapons are being used to attack civilians in syria. the latest reported victims include a family in aleppo. meanwhile, surveillance video showing an air strike hitting a children's hospital. all hospitals in eastern aleppo are now destroyed. leaving 250,000 residents to suffer. and some frightening moments from passengers on this flight in europe. take a look as heavy winds rock that plane while it approached amsterdam's airport. it appeared to get pushed sideways and then aborted the landing at the last minute before trying again. well, there was something amiss in the nfl after an embarrassing record on sunday. kickers missed 12 extra points. these kicks after touchdowns used to be automatic until last year when the league made them 13 yards longer. finally, football may be a religion to some fans, but that concept take ton a whole -- taken to a whole new level. look at a church in dallas.

they agreed to put the cowboys game on the projection screen behind the pulpit during service on sunday. the cowboys have the best record in the league this season. and maybe those churchgoers believed divine intervention had something to do with it. but guess what? it was a full house, so the church made the right call, and the cowboys won, 27-17. >> if you could see the reaction of the crew members. are you kidding -- oh, okay. >> i saw your reaction. this is robin. >> but they're there. they're in church. they get to watch football, too. i guess it's a win-win. all right. the latest now on that murder in manhattan where two men have been charged in connection with killing a 26-year-old man. they're due to appear in court today. abc's linzie janis has more. >> reporter: this morning, the two suspects in the brutal slaying of 26-year-old joey comunale are being held on $3 million bond each. set to head to court later today where they could be charged with second degree murder. >> to do something like this

to -- an animal, let alone a human being, is just heinous. >> reporter: overnight, one of the suspects, james rackover, the surrogate son of a prominent manhattan jeweler, denying any involvement in the murder. telling the new york daily news, i have no reason to hurt this kid. i have never hurt anyone. i have never killed anyone. i didn't do this. but police disagree. they believe comunale went to this luxury manhattan high-rise with 25-year-old rackover, 28-year-old larry dilione, and three women after meeting them at a nightclub. according to investigators, comunale left the high-rise to help all three women into a cab, then re-entered the building when police say, he was murdered. >> he was stabbed 15 times in the chest area. and also, there is an effort to burn his body. a very disturbing crime scene. >> reporter: police believe the victim's body was removed from the apartment where rackover lives on this blood-stained luggage cart.

comunale's body later found in a shallow grave in new jersey, 55 miles away. >> james, why did you kill him? >> reporter: meanwhile, a grieving father is waiting for justice to be served. >> these guys need to pay for their actions. >> reporter: the two suspects have so far only been charged with crimes in connection with the murder, such as tampering with physical evidence, but prosecutors say one or both men will eventually be charged with second-degree murder. robin? >> so sad, thank you. back to ginger in syracuse. ginger? >> that's right. 24 hours left of lake-effect snow in this region. but you have to see this video from u of m over the weekend. so many people watching college football, and the football players taking advantage. doing some snow angels on the field. the cheerleaders getting in on the act. everybody starting to enjoy this first hit of winter. let's get to the select cities brought to you by macy's.

presidents, and how presidents handle it, really gives you some sense of who they are. george bush bringing dana carvey in to do his imitation of george bush. i always thought george w. bush was very lucky that will ferrell retired from ask t"saturday nig live" just before his presidency began. it goes with the territory, and donald trump has to understand that, because otherwise, he looks petty. >> he's going after hollywood. going after his opponents. yet steve bannon, his chief strategist, has deep ties in hollywood. also, yesterday, he met yesterday with ari emanuel, perhaps one of the biggest agents in hollywood. >> i think the president-elect has deeper ties into the media industry than any president, well, since reagan and kennedy. this is -- and i don't think it's thin skin. i think this is very calculated. >> you think it's strategic? >> this is the campaign he played. he is the president, in part, because he ran against the media, and i think from his

point of view, it's let's keep doing what works. and cokie, perhaps he doesn't mind having people talk about this. >> i'm sure he likes it a lot. i think running against the media is one thing, however, and getting touchy about comedians is something else, and the "hamilton," question is i think relevant. i think vice president-elect pence handled that very well. said he liked the show and he was not at all insulted. said to his kids that when he was booed, that's the sound of freedom, and, you know, the booing makes me uncomfortable. i think it's rude, but i think the statement from the stage was completely appropriate because that's what theater is all about. it is a -- live theater is a place where ideas are batted around and confrontations exist. >> it's given people plenty to talk about. cokie roberts, and mike wolff. thank you very much. and watch "the view" today.

this guy's been one of the most feared and reviled people for celebrities in england. and so now they view this as their opportunity to finally try to sue and get back. >> how strong of a case is it? rupert murdoch's lawyers say it's defective and embarrassing. >> here in the united states, there would be no case. right? you see her on tape. there's no case. it would be a no-brainer. as long as there was no other violation of law. in england, they're willing more to evaluate the quality of the journalism. part of the lawsuit talks about the way it was edited. that it was misleading and it misrepresented what actually happened. sorts of things you would never see in a lawsuit here. >> we have seen lawsuits here against the media have been succeeding. >> they have. they have. this one wouldn't in the united states. >> dan, thank you very much. up next, new warnings about air rage. as the holiday travel season kicks into high gear. we have the latest incident. 41 passengers -- excuse me. removed from a brussels flight over the weekend. david kerley back with more on that. and david, are these incidents actually on the rise, or are we

seeing more thanks to smartphones? >> you know, george stephanopoulos. you're a smart man. i have the statistics to say that you are actually right. there are fewer incidents than there used to be. but this one overseas, i have never heard anything like this. 41 people taken off an aircraft at the same time. they were all from the same group. and it's rare. usually, it's one or two people. enough to i have the numbers here for you. over the last five years in the united states, we had 183 incidents down to 150, down to 145, down to 103, and then this year, halfway through the year, only 31 incidents. so yes, there are fewer, but we hear a lot more about them, george. >> and david, i know this is shocking. but alcohol may have played a role. i'm no expert here. but that is what they're saying. and now people are saying, should alcohol be banned on flights? >> there's always talk about that. yes, alcohol was involved with some of the 41 taken off board. this is the big issue. airlines, it's a revenue stream for them.

but they also don't want an unsafe situation inside the cockpit. it's been tried before. flight attendants try to limit people. like, haven't you had enough? sometimes that's led to unruly passengers. it can be a bad mix. >> good luck on the ban. >> good luck with that. sometimes flying leads you to drinking. i like your travel outfit. very chic. i like that, dave. good look. good look. >> thank you. appreciate it. going to get on a plane now. no to an alarm ing new stud about kids and junk food. the american pediatrics found children exposed to food advertisements consumed more calories even when they were not hungry. dr. jen ashton will weigh in on this. what are the indications, jen? >> here's the thing. this study found an association between what young children, preschool kids do, in this case, watching tv with food ads, and then what they consume. in this case, highly palatable

foods. which is code nutrition speak for high-calorie, high-sugar, low-nutrient. this is about increased cued eating. and can what kids see prime the pump for behaviors later on that lead to weight gain. it's impossible to avoid these ads. this is very concerning. >> so what should parents do? >> well, look. first, as a mom, i remember these days. you are in control of what your preschool child watches or doesn't watch. you want to leverage that while you still can. you can't control a 15-year-old as easily. then, as a doctor, i think this study brings up again that mind-body connection. we know there's a part of the brain that gets really lit up when we eat high-sugar foods. and that pathway can be established very early in life, so remember that connection. and lastly, as a nutritionist, i learned, and this bears repeating, put that living color on your plate. don't watch it on the screen. the more color your children eat, the better your diet is. >> good advice. >> thank you.

somewhere between the ages of 15 and 25. there's a study. the reminiscence bump. there was an article in the conversation that says, during that time, your brain is still maturing, you're getting a sense of self. that vital first time moments, like a prom, the first kiss, the first time you drove a car, those are memories that are some of the strongest in your lives if you think back. >> why are you laughing? >> i was thinking about the first time i drove a car. i was getting a lesson from my wrestling coach. he fell asleep. i got a ticket, first time i drove a car. [ applause ] >> that would stay with you. i agree with you. >> jess, i would have thought, i feel like i had heard studies in the past that it was, like, age 3. >> interesting. >> now they're saying it's later? >> 15 to 25. >> i have a lot of those. i was reading your notes. you sort of remember movies from that time. >> music. >> that's right. >> i can definitely sing more songs from that time than songs on now.

we've heard great reviews. tell us about it. >> yeah. well, 's a -- it's just a great -- it's an outstanding movie about a high school teenager. and really talks about how incredibly devastating and difficult it is to be a high schooler. you know. and to be a girl. and to be -- um, someone coming from this really dysfunctional family. mona, as cute as she is, is really struggling. she's really a struggling mom. they -- she loses her husband in the beginning of the movie. and, it's incredibly funny. it's incredibly sad. incredibly poignant. >> so it's real? >> it's incredible. audiences are loving it. everyone laughs and then they cry, and then they applaud at the end. what could be better? >> that is fantastic. of course, you have teens at home. now, you're also directing now. you're directing your daughter, sosie and kevin in "story of a girl." >> yes. i said i would never direct.

i just thought, never, never. i just didn't think i would be any good at it. i don't want to do anything i'm not good at. so, but, you know, i bought this book in 2007. and, um -- and i was -- i got the -- um -- boy. i got the opportunity to direct it. and, i hired my husband, kevin bacon.
