and the holiday travel rush is on. this is a live look at the san francisco skyway right now. >> yikes. >> as people are trying to get an early start on the holiday, but it is a crawl in both directions. not looking good. >> let's take a look at the east bay. this is looking at interstate 80 towards the mcarthur maze, and to be honest, this is what it looks like every afternoon pretty much. you can't really tell, the left-hand side is eastbound and right-hand side people slowly making their way towards san francisco if they make that right-hand turn. >> yeah, let's check the south bay, 101, looks normal as well. southbound, right-hand side. that's your backed up traffic. northbound looking good. 880 fine in both directions at the top. good afternoon, and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz.

>> and i'm larry beil. >> it's not just the roads that are busy. airports from the bay area to chicago to miami all packed with people. this thanksgiving aaa is expecting travel to reach levels not seen in a deck a. >> reporter: some 50 million million americans are packing highways this holiday weekend. more than half are flying this thanksgiving and an increase over last year. today alone there are some 2.5 million passengers at airports. demand is so high airlines are adding 74,000 seats each day, preparing for the big crowds, tsa hired 1,400 new officers and converted many part-time workers to full time. they also rolled out automated screening lanes in new jersey, chicago and los angeles just in time for the holiday. officials say the new technology decreases the time travelers spend going through security while still making sure they are safe. >> this is a partnership between

the airlines and airport authorities that they believe is a good thing and it is a good thing and both a security, effectiveness and efficiency perspective. >> reporter: winter storms set to hit the middle of the country could mean delays or cancellations across the nation and since so many people are traveling by car this weekend slippery roads could bring traffic to a crawl. departures are staggered and everyone seems to come back at the same time so sunday is expected be the busiest day of the holiday weekend. the only way to avoid the crowds is to travel on thanksgiving. that's expected to be the least busy of the next few days. >> there's been a shift at the airports actually. sfo say the busiest says is the friday before thanksgiving because so many people take the whole week off from work or school. we just checked and there are 50 delays at sfo. one flight is cancelled. and ten delays at san francisco international. before heading to the airport go

enable push alerts to get the latest breaking news and weather updates. >> police say a man was targeted and shot to death in a popular tourist area. the shooting happened at cannery row. police say there's not been a hmicide there in 25 years. officers found the victim throwing them inside a parking garage early this morning. the 28 was shot several times and no arrests have been made in that case. >> in healdsburg the community continues to mourn a 4-year-old girl that police say died when her father drowned her in a church baptismal pool. >> abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman has been covering this sad story all weekend long and today he spoke with a family member. wayne? >> reporter: well, we still do not -- we still do not know what happened in that church behind us. we know what happened.

we don't know why it happens, not family members and did speak with family members today and all of healdsburg is reaching out. at st. john the baptist church in healdsburg the crime tape is gone and much of the world's attention until one sees the flowers and candles and stuffed animals and a photograph of maria odaza who drowned in this baptismal pool in what police say it a murder by her father. it's devastated this community. >> this is a local foup rall director who donated his services to the 4-year-old's family. >> very deeply sorry. i say a prayer for the father and for what happened, i do not know. >> girardeau ordaz stands accused of the murder and at his arraignment he looked bewildered and broken and no one in the family understands why he would

drown his daughter in a baptismal pool. >> maybe if we knew something like this would have happened we would have tried to help him out. >> reporter: today we spoke with a cousin of ordaz and she speak of a gofundme page started by her sister and the victim's mother who does not work and has four children to support. >> she's devastated. you know, she's heartbroken and it's unreal for her and everybody. >> reporter: ordaz was a day laborer who works a lot in the local vineyards. the day of the murder he and his kids had gone to a walk for the church and then everything changed. >> most of all, you know, prayers, other children and lost a sister and now their father is not with them right now and maybe will never be. >> reporter: today nancy said the family went shopping for maia's burial dress. they are looking for something similar to the one in which she was baptized. from healdsburg, wayne freedman,

abc news. >> as wayne said, a gofundme page has been created to help pay for maria's funeral. so far they have raised nearly 9,000 of the $12,000 goal. >> sky 7 flew over san jose after a motorcyclist died along northbound u.s. highway so 1. here's appears the man hit the center divider and then landed in the left lane around 2:15 this afternoon. drivers still face delays because two northbound lanes remain closed and authorities are trying to identify a pedestrian who was killed in a collision this morning on interstate 880 in haywood. the accident happened just south of the tennyson road offramp. the government wants smartphone-makers to lock out most apps when the known is being used by someone driving a car. the voluntary guidelines unveiled today by the national highway traffic safety administration are designed to reduce crashes caused by drivers distracted by phones.

the north and the south are mine. all seems beautiful to me. hundreds of post-it notes from oakland owes so-called love wall have been torn down. those notes represented people's hopes and fears following the presidential election. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas found the man who did it and asked him why. eric? >> reporter: i'm told yesterday you would have seen this wall filled with post-it notes, maybe about 7 feet high and at least half of its length. you see them now, no, you see a mural. that's part of the reason a man tore them down.

until yesterday this wall was filled with post-it notes following donald trump's presidential win. >> sentiments about who won the presidency, pro and con and basically that was it. nothing ugly. >> i was disappointed to see that somehow the rain or somebody took them down. >> reporter: we quickly found out it wasn't the rain, rather a gentleman with a stormy disposition who showed up and began taking down the few notes that remain. why are you taking those off? >> why not. >> reporter: 85-year-old oakland resident stefan tompkins says he is responsible. >> reporter: did you take these off before? >> i took them off yesterday. >> reporter: for one he said it blocked the view of the 12-year-old mural he worked on. >> this is art, mister. you understand that? we've got 200 of these in the neighborhood. >> reporter: 200 murals he means like the one tompkins helped design at the nearby lakeview school. the other reason he wanted the notes gone. he's a trump supporter.

>> we've got a president. trump is our president, regardless of circumstances, he owes our president. you've got to go with it. >> reporter: if that sound a bit curmudgeonly, listen to what he said about the people who posted the notes. >> it's an expression of some child that didn't get the right kind of training. >> reporter: but others disagree. >> i thought it was a nice statement. >> reporter: meantime, some new most-its have begun popping up on the building next door. in oakland, eric thomas, abc 7 news. in san francisco, public works is asking for help finding out who spray painted political messages on the sidewalk. abc 7 news was at fourth and harrison streets where can you see what appears to be a picture of donald duck with the words i voted for donald. there are at least two other paintings like this along fourth street. a city spokesperson says they didn't know about the graffiti and now that they do crews will clean it up and try to cover the costs. defacing a sidewalk is against state law. >> two turkeys from iowa will

live out the rest of their days in peace thanks to president obama. >> to the, i hereby pardon you from the thanksgiving table, and we hope that you have a wonderful time in gobblers rest. >> mr. obama hosted the last turkey pardon of his presidency today flanked by his nephews. in addition to the reprieve for the turkey named tot the president pardoned the second turkey named tater. these are pretty big bird, by the way. president george h.w. bird is credited with beginning this thanksgiving tradition. he wants to leave right now. he wants to make sure there's no second thought. legend has it presidents as far back as abraham lincoln have spared turkeys from the dinner table. a longtime tradition also played out in san francisco. abc 7 news was on harrison street as the mayor joined the police and fire chiefs. the event gathered dozens of

volunteers. they helped the salvation army prepare more than 1,200 pounds of turkey. the fire chief says it hones her carving skills for tomorrow. >> you remove both legs and you carve from the top, breast down, separate the breast and slice it up. >> all this will pair up with 65 gallons of gravy and 450 pounds of stuffing to make more than 4,000 thanksgiving meals for home-bound residents. >> if you're looking for a creative and challenging way of working off your thanksgiving dinner, a san francisco cyclist has an idea for you. >> he's devised and completed a ride through the city that's making national news. abc 7 news anchor krintsy is here with this very creative route. >> reporter: that's right. feast your eyes on this. the bike route that's ruffling feathers, shall we say. let's take a closer look now, shall we. 50 miles, oh, my gosh, four hours and over 4,000 feet of climbing.

could you do that? i know i couldn't? this is the san francisco man who executed the idea on monday. mechanical idea brett lobrie and posted this instagram selfie and a picture of his seven riding buddies and him going past sutra tower and you'll be more amazed when you see it animated. this turkeys has feathers, a waddle and even a pilgrim hat with a buckle. just the beak requires riding on half a dozen streets. the route is pretty and took lots of planning. >> me being the creator one of the challenging things was navigating while riding the bike and telling people where to turn. >> reporter: brett's ride is getting so much buds it was featured on "good morning america" this morning, and this is brett's fourth year doing it, but the first time he's getting lots of attention, an here's a scoop for you. he tells us he's mapping out a santa claus route right now just in time for christmas.

larry and ama? >> wow, very cool. i have no interest in doing that. >> we'll be on couch. >> i want to watch some nfl games. >> spencer christian, rain, no rain, clear, what have we got? >> clear but chilly. great day for going outside if you don't like any wet. friday, not so great. here's a look at live doppler 7. mainly sunny skies right now and a nice crisp fall afternoon across the bay area. looking really nice as we get ready for thanksgiving. looking westward and the sun is about to set and it's just gorgeous out there. forecast features, and it's bright and sunny and chilly in the morning. the next storm arrives friday evening, and there will be periods of rain right on into the weekend and through the weekend actually. right now we're looking at temperature readings in a fairly uniform range. mainly mid to upper 50s and los gatos reporting 39 degrees, not so sure on that one and as we go through the overnight

temperatures drop and begin to rise a bit by midday tomorrow. we'll be looking at temperatures mainly in the mid-50s. 55 to 58 in most locations and then had a little bit milder by mid-afternoon. we'll see a few 60s, low 60s right around the bay and in our inland areas tomorrow. if you're traveling tomorrow, locally, no weather problems should interfere with your travel of i-5 north to redding and clear sailing. i-5 north of los angeles same thing and i-5 east of central vale. looking good weather-wise. can't predict traffic. tough enough predicting weather and east of tahoe weather conditions are looking good. storm impact scale. our approaching storm coming in friday evening ranks one on the storm impact scale. a storm of light intensity and it will produce periods of moderate rainfall and breezy at times and we expect rainfall totals to range generally from about .05 to an inch to half an inch and let's get right to the animation starting at 11:00 a.m. friday. notice by early evening we'll see a few pockets of light rain developing up in the north bay and rain will become more widespread and a bit steadier as

we get into the overnight hours hand in the wee hours of the morning on saturday. it will start to rain more steadily over parts of the north bay and then that rain will spread to almost all parts of the bay area by 4:00 a.m. saturday and then we'll see it breaking up midday saturday beore the arrival of a second wave of rain on sunday so here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. crisp and clear thanksgiving day tomorrow and becoming partly cloudy on friday with a late developing storm friday evening into saturday. a second storm bringing wet and breezy conditions on saturday and continues into early sunday and then we get partial clearing on monday and bright and sunny next tuesday with increasing clouds and slightly milder weather next wednesday. basically a typical fall pattern. >> so were you literally giving us weather and traffic. >> i'm doing it all. >> thanks, spencer. >> coming up, what would we do if the entire u.s. government was gone? it's a subject of the hit show "designated survivor." it's also a very real life scenario. how it works coming up.

and here's what's making headlines at 4:30, aaa predicts this will be the busiest thanksgiving holiday travel period in ten years. almost 49 million people are expected to travel between now and sunday. let's take a live look at traffic on 80. this is near berkeley. the eastbound traffic on the right-hand side here not moving well at all. lots of drivers are heading out of town for the holiday. now, millions of other people are flying. abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom tweeted this picture which shows people just breezing right through security at sfo. at 5:00 he'll tell us if this calm scene is still holding up. also at 5:00, some bay area universities are urging undocumented students to avoid studying abroad. elissa harrington is looking

into concerns that president-elect donald trump could end protection for the undocumented students program. today mr. trump appointed two strong women to his cabnent who didn't support him on the campaign trail. abc news reporter lana zach says this could be the first sign of a shift in his transition team. president-elect donald trump released a thanksgiving message. >> it's my prayer that on this thanksgiving we begin to heal our divisions and move forward as one country. >> reporter: earlier he named additional members of his administration, betsy devos, the nominee for education secretary and nikki haley, the nominee for u.n. ambassador are strong republican leaders, but their selection to join the president's cabinet selects a departure from the previous nominees. not only are the two the first female appointees and in the case of nikki haley the first person of color to join his administration, but neither were supporters of mr. trump on the campaign trail. >> marco rubio. >> other state of the union response considered an indictment of mr. trump.

will leave office as one of the most popular two-term presidents in recent history. a new cnn/orc poll shows 57% of those surveyed approve of his work as president, the highest number since early in his presidency in september of 2009. an east bay political leader is now on front lines of the protest against the dakota access pipeline. oakland city councilwoman rebecca kaplan tweeted this picture today from the site with the caption at standing rock with the water protectors. water isly. the protesters are trying to stop the final phase of the nearly $4 billion 1,200 mile pipeline that will carry north dakota to illinois. standing rock sioux believe that project could harm the tribe's drinking water as well as cultural sites. >> south lake tahoe police are investigating another possible case of food tampering, this time making a 12-year-old boy sick. the boy got sick on saturday after eating at a baja fresh salsa bar.

police were alerted after smelling a strong odor similar to beach. police fear a connection to a nearby incident at a nearby grocery store where a man was seen putting something on food. >> it's left a foamy white presence on the food. >> police are now looking for a man by the surveillance cameras. heads up to anybody who is getting gravy from the store this thanksgiving. heinz is recalling 12-ounce jars of its homestyle bistro au jus gravy and 500 cases may be mislabeled as heinz pork. the au jus contains milk or soy that could pose a life-threatening risk to those with allergies to either ingredients. >> despite concerns that sacred heart community service might not collect turkeys to feed families in need, the agency

says it's exceeded its goal. >> melan woodrow live from the distribution center. >> reporter: while volunteers say they don't have the exact turkey tally just yet, what they can say with great certainly is that they have exceeded their goal of 4,200 turkeys. take a look at some video from earlier today. you can see it was extremely busy here this afternoon. this is what it looked like as families were dropping off turkeys and some other families were picking up thanksgiving food boxes. all of this made possible not only because of donations but with the help of, are you ready for this, guys, 900 volunteers over four days. as of monday, sacred heart was short more than 3,600 turkeys that changed this afternoon. >> after the morning we got a lot of donations and yesterday, too, were about very close to

facebook is building a censorship tool in an attempt to gain a foothold in china where it's now blocked. according to the "new york times" facebook would install software that would block certain posts from users' news feeds in some parts of the world. the company isn't denying the report saying the china strategy is only a work in progress. the rash of fake news stories on the internet has made people more curious about news sources and which you can trust. a helpful video highlights the

colder around midnight with a few clouds around. maybe a north bay sprinkle early friday morning and then by 7:00 friday morning we'll be looking at increasingly cloudy skies. chilly inland and the clouds are increasing because the storm is on its way. here's the storm impact scale. the storm arriving friday night ranks 1 on the scale, a scale of light intensity which will produce periods of moderate rainfall. forecast animation starting at 11:00 friday morning. notice the nighttime hours and the early overnight or early morning hours on saturday and we'll see the rain intensifying and spreading across the north bay and later in the day it will spread across the entire bay area. that storm will break up and be followed by another storm which also ranks one of the impact scale. that will bring us light rain and showers overnight saturday and into sunday morning and we get some partial clearing after that storm and here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. each of these approaching systems rank one on the storm impact scale and let's focus on tomorrow. sunny, chilly in the morning and fair in the afternoon and then

now to the very public and unusual fight between the 49ers and city of santa clara. the 49ers tell abc 7 news they are willing to work with the mayor and city but they don't want it to hurt business. abc 7 news reporter matt keller has more on the city's threat to take over control of levi stadium. ch. >> the 49ers are fired up, not over something on the field but the battle they are having with the city. the frustrating part is that it's public. >> last night city council members voted to breach of agreement meaning the 49ers have 30 days to show the profits and losses of non-nfl events at levi stadium like concerts where city leaders say other avenues will be pursued. >> if they are delivered, we don't have a problem.

if they are not. we have a problem. >> reporter: the team says the city and its you had aors are welcome to come to the stadium and look at all the documents but bringing the information to city hall and making them public could be disastrous for the stadium's and city's success. if a concert promoter was able to go to city hall and collect this information and take that information and compare it to what the stadium is charging other acts, they could essentially negotiate out the profit margins and pretty much erasing the revenues that would go to the general fund. >> and i believe once do you live up to your responsibilities, then and only then can we have a very close working relationship, but we have to set it straight. we have to set it right. >> the 49ers say they have yet to receive the letter from the city, but once they get it, they will review it. they are scheduled to meet with the auditors next thursday. at levi stadium, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> and time for ask finney, michael finney is here to answer

well, it's been a tradition for several years, a retail experiment, if you will. that is starting black friday shopping on thursday which happens to be thanksgiving day, and while some retailers are sticking with it, others are bailing out, like minnesota's mall of america which will close for the first time in five years. while many large retailers like nordstrom's will keep their doors shut this thanksgiving others will try to take advantage of what some are calling a new tradition, that is shopping on thanksgiving. and in the case of jc penney, the start time is 3:00 p.m. >> families come out. >> reporter: for the fourth year concord sun valley mall will open on thanksgiving day from 5:00 to midnight. santa will start his shift at 8:00. >> it was a decision that we made based on consumer interest and demand. the department stores are all open. >> it's a big day, and i like that it kind of separates out instead of that big black friday now we get to spread it out a
