own. there are no easy answers either. good evening. i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. the video is titled when did shooting a cop become okay? san jose rolled it out hoping to spark attention to a sharp increase in recent killings of officers. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at police headquarters with more on the story. vic? >> well, the police union president says he and his members will not be quiet as long as officers across this country are being ambushed just because they wear a badge. here's how the video starts. take a close look. the minute long online video asks police union president paul kelly unveiled the web ad next to had a mock thanksgiving table and dressed with the pictures of law enforcement officers who were killed recently in the line of duty.

these heros will not be with their families tomorrow celebrating thanksgiving. >> the police union video says so far this year 56 officers have been killed by gunfire, a 70% increase over last year. the video comes on the heels of an incident earlier last week when a gunman shot at two officers in east san jose. neither was hit, but it's the second time this year when someone fired at san jose police officers. >> he wasn't threatening nobody. that man took care of his kids. >> reporter: kelly says the only public expression of anger and indignation comes when there's an officer-involved shooting. >> there ought to be anger and outrage when our society begins to accept that cop killing is the new normal. >> a san jose community-based activist group silicon valley debug calls the video divisive. >> i think it's ludicrous. at a moment like this, they really should be building with community, gaining more trust and they are doing the complete

opposite. >> as a testimonial to what the police union is saying the flag and its offices have been flying half staff for months. there's been too many cop killings to raise t.vic lee, abc 7 news. >> several police agencies ran a prostitution sting that left nine suspected johns being arrested in heywood. you're looking at images showing eight of the suspects nabbed at a motel. investigators set up a sting in part to rescue underaged prostitutes. one of the men arrested kevin taguchi is an attorney in private practice. taggy linkedin profile says he began his career prosecuting criminals for the alameda county district attorney. some bay area colleges are warning undocumented students to avoid going abroad. they are concerned when president-elect trump takes office they might not be allowed in the country. abc 7 news reporter elissa harrington it live in santa clara with the story tonight. alissa. >> well, these are students on deferred action status. mr. trump plans to eliminate

this program which provides work permits and deportation protection. university officials want students to be prepared so they don't end up stranded outside the country. studying abroad is a rite of passage for many college students, but some universities, including san jose state and santa clara are now urging undocumented students to avoid traveling outside the country when president-elect donald trump takes office. >> we are asking our students to keep in mind that if they are undocumented it might be best to stay in the country until we learn more about the future of the dhaka program. >> reporter: dhaka or deferred action for childhood arrivals allows some undocumented immigrants who came to the u.s. when they were under 16 protection from deportation. mr. trump has pledged to end the program. >> many of the families in our communities have mixed families where there's citizens and then some members are undocumented. the fears are really intense.

>> reporter: call state university's chancellor sent an e-mail to administrators urging them to share the reality of this threat with their students. part of it reads if they are outside the united states as of january 20th, 2017, there is no assurance they will be allowed to return to the u.s. there are about 600 undocumented students at san jose state. spokesperson pat lopez harris says the college of international studies is working to create other opportunities. >> opportunities that are on our campus, in our state or in our country that do dwreeyield some the same benefits one can get from traveling abroad. >> reporter: fork, international business programs without having to travel internationally. elissa harrington, abc 7 news. >> joined forces today and other than that they will stand as one. a large group of supporters joined officials on the steps of city hall. the southern poverty law center

reports more than 400 incidents of hate-based intimidation harassment in the two weeks since the election. several in the bay area. some are calling it the trump effect. >> the support that we're seeing today in san francisco from the city leadership is critical, but they can only serve us if people are coming forward and providing the data about what they are experiencing. otherwise it looks like there is no trump effect. >> the city will start education and outreach campaigns to try to solve intolerance and prejudice. firefighters tell us tonight that a battery-powered toy car is what sparked a house fire nor san leandro today. the alameda county fire department shared this video on instagram and smoke just pouring from a home on birch street just before 11:00 this morning. here's the aftermath from sky 7. you can see it's pretty bad. a grandmother did get out safely thank goodness with two young grandchildren when the smoke detectors started going off. a quick thinking antioch

police officer helped save a man from frigid water in a canal. you're looking at a picture tweeted from the showing a man safe and back on dry land. a canine officer used his dog leash to reach him this morning near sutter delta hospital. firefighters pulled him from the water with a long pole. it appears the man jumped into the canal and he's getting psychiatric care. all right. if you are planning on driving somewhere for thanksgiving tonight, be careful, of course, and take a look at this. >> yeah. all these drivers are headed south on 101 out of san jose right now. >> just a mess. let's take a live look at our traffic maps where you see a lot of red around san jose, oakland and san francisco. >> okay. now let's head over a live look from our walnut creek camera which shows 6 will 80 packed about traffic right now. >> even worse on 80 heading north of emoryville and thanksgiving, this shows traffic crawling around. and this is the san francisco skyway which is also busy. packed at this time, of course, and looks definitely slightly

worse today. >> and for those flying out of sfo this is historically one of the busiest travel days of the year but there are some changes. >> abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom is live at the airport to show us how it's looking right now. jonathan? >> well, there are a lot of people here, but not nearly as many as last friday. if you grew up knowing this as the craziest time to be at the airport, well, times have changed. what do you think of the crowd? >> not that bad. >> lifelong travelers are being caught off guard. >> quite surprised as we came in because i was expecting big long lines. >> and the newspaper don't lie. the day before thanksgiving is not what it used to be. >> we think because a lot of schools give kids the entire week off, we see the friday before and the sunday after thanksgiving as the peak days. >> who is this? >> this is lady. >> reporter: lady's owner works for an airline. >> sunday traveling home is going to be horrendous. every flight is pretty much oversold. >> but her canine companion can take comfort. sfo has been adding more relief areas for pets and soon there will be one inside security.

you probably spend most of your time post-security at the airport. >> reporter: technology is credited for that with key of course and ticket on smartphones, the line to check in is shorter each year and the same is starting to happen with line at security. >> i have tsa pre-check-in. >> reporter: that costs money and some say it's worth it. >> all the people on the bridge that don't have fast track, you laugh at them and it's the same thing at the airport. >> i actually had to park at a friend's. usually park at b.a.r.t. but it was sold out. >> reporter: parking around the airport is packed. >> they are all knocked there so they need valets. it's not like you can park it yourself. >> reporter: and that, too, is letting up and, again, credits technology like lyft and unier. >> today is the first day our parking garages have reached capacity. normally that happens days in advance of this thanksgiving travel period. >> reporter: at sfo, jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. >> and if you're flying out of sfo or mineta san jose, look at this.

some say today's teens care only about themselves. today a high school football team proved that wrong as they

helped prepare thanksgiving meals for the needy. abc 7 news reporter lieian melendez is live in oakland with those teens and other good deeds in the bay area today. lieian. >> well, i have to say, you know, different communities in the bay area really showed their compassion today, and it was nice to see some of the more experienced volunteers and some newcomers to the game. >> i need a small dice on these, okay. >> reporter: it took a few good young men to make thanksgiving dinner a reality from one oakland community center. the cattlement football team diced potatoes and showed compassion for those who don't have a place to spend the holidays. >> it shows that we're giving back to our community and we're practicing what we preach. >> reporter: all of this food will be served tomorrow at the community center at campbell village in oakland. ♪ >> reporter: music seemed to fuel the hearts of these homeless people in richmond invited by the bay area rescue mission.

the organization which also helps families in need had a long line of volunteers serving lunch to more than 1,000 people. >> the great thanksgiving banquet is our way of sharing a great hot nutritious thanksgiving meal to people who are truly in great need. >> reporter: sherwin harris was himself homeless but in 1994 his life changed and now works for the rescue mission. he tells others to never give up on themselves. >> just take a chance. invest in yourself. >> let the carving begin. >> reporter: across the bay in san francisco, the mayor along with the fire and police chiefs served as turkey carvers. 1,200 pounds of turkey ready to be delivered by the salvation army tomorrow to those san franciscans unable to leave their homes. chief joanne hayes white shared her vast knowledge when cutting up a bird. >> you remove both the legs and then you carve from the top, the breast down and separate the breast and then slice it up. >> it really is a great way to begin the holiday season by

serving others. >> reporter: today's efforts will help feed 4,000 home-bound people in the city. lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> now if you like to help feed the hungry which would rather just give money, you can help with our annual give where you live thanksgiving food drive. text the word feed to 80077 to make an automatic $10 donation to help those in need this holiday season. >> well, new at 5:00, it's going to be another tough year, unfortunately, for crab fishermen. today state health fishermen wanted to delayed the start of the crab season due to the toxin that can cause food poisoning. dungeness crab south of the area are still safe to eat. tourists heading to san francisco this thanksgiving weekend may be a little disappointed to see fewer sea lions. abc 7 was at pier 39 as about 100 sea lions soaked up the sun. that may seem like a lot but

it's really a far cry from the thanksgiving of 2009 when about 1,700 sea lions crowded the docks. experts say sea lions are leaving in search of fish which are saying away from the bay because of warmer sea temperatures. >> this isn't really a permanent home for them. it's a place where they rest. they find food. if there's a lot of food, great. if not they will leave and they will go find it somewhere else. >> there are some promising signs for sea lions. a survey of breeding areas of peps are health they are last year when many were found starving along the coast. a federal judge blocked a new rule that would have made millions of workers eligible for overtime pay. >> that rule was supposed to take effect next week and now it's on hold. >> abc 7's michael finney is here. >> hurting so many people this time of year, absolutely amazing. this rule would have helped 5 million white collar workers collect overtime pay in december. currently workers earning

$24,000 less per year are entitled to overtime pay and the new rule would have doubled the salary limit. those earning up to $47 per year would be entitled to overtime. 21 states sued to stop that increase saying it would hurt economic growth. the judge blocked the new eligibility ruling until he can decide whether it's legal. before you hit the black friday sales a consumer group is warning about unsafe toys still out in the marketplace. the california public interest research group offered its annual trouble in toyland report. it's urging parents to watch for toys with small pieces. also, call prg found websites are selling some of the 44,000 toys recalled this year. >> we found that 16 of the recalled toys were available online. >> and they include the sky rover, arrow cruise and the green monkey which has lead paint and the bud and skip it pull toy which has small pieces.

call prg says check the federal government recall list before you buy. shipping companies are expecting a record year for holiday deliveries and urge customers to arrange delivery to a safe place. ups, fedex and amazon are gearing up to deliver a record $94 billion worth of merchandise. now, that's up about 12% over last year. shipping companies also hope to deter theft of packages from your doorstep. if you won't be home, have your packages delivered to a workplace, a neighbor or the shipper's safe drop location. well, parents don't know about their children's child care facility may be disturbing. most child care facilities at health clubs and retailers don't have licenses. one local family found that out after their child suffered a head injury. >> the i saw blood running all over and right under his cheeks and running into his mouth. >> i'm taking a look at what

going to be bright and brisk. crisp afternoon at 4:00 p.m. and looking at the sun going down at 7:00. cool, low to mid-50s. now, if you're traveling thursday, here's a look at what it's going to be like in terms of the weather, i-5 north of reading, green light north of los angeles and east to the central valley or to tahoe so you're going to be just fine because we're not expecting any unsettled weather for thanksgiving. live doppler 7 showing nothing but a few clouds out there and we're tracking the next storm. for friday, this one is going to come out of gulf of alaska and it will bring us some rain and not until late. kicking up the waves and a beach hazard is up until thursday evening. current wave heights 12 to 14 feet and generally between 11 and 13 feet and the biggest thing is to watch out for rip currents and sneaker waves especially if you're spending part of your day at the beach tomorrow. past 24 hours, got a good soaking, .05 in san jose and in san francisco half an inch of

rain and if you recall yesterday it was light and moderate in intensity and this morning we did have a few lingering showers. a lovely crew from our santa cruz cameras. temperatures mid to upper 50s from san francisco and oakland and san jose. sfo, no weather-related issues. low to mid-50s from santa rosa to livermore and our golden gate bridge camera, a wind is not a problem. bright and sunny for your thanksgiving and next storm friday night into saturday afternoon and another storm coming saturday night into sunday morning tomorrow morning, make sure you dress warmly. it's going to be a cold one. mid-30s to mid-40s and for the afternoon a few clouds and otherwise thanksgiving is looking bright. mid-50s to low 60s and as we head into tomorrow night, some of you braving the crowds after having a nice meal. hour by hour forecast for your shopping needs. upper 40s to the low 50s. if you're going to be out and about at midnight, grab a jacket or a cold. north bay sprinkle not out of the question at 4:00 a.m. and at
