>> stay with us for "good morning america." making news in america this morning, breaking overnight, an out-of-control wildfire destroying dozens of structures forcing evacuations in tennessee. people trapped inside a hotel filled with smoke as flames reach the windows and now dolly parton's dollywood in one fire's path. also breaking right now, investigators on the scene of a plane crash. a soccer team on board. new details about what the pilot reported before the crash and word of survivors just in. and campus attack. a student at ohio state university ramming his car into a group and going on a stabbing spree. what we're learning about the suspect, his social media post moments before that attack and the hero police officer who took him out.

and we do say hello on what is turning out to be a busy tuesday morning. i'm kendis gibson. and i'm adrienne bankert in for diane macedo. we start with breaking news. fast-moving wildfires forcing evacuations in a popular resort area of tennessee. >> and this video from inside one popular hotel, you can see the flames surround the building. the dry and windy weather there fueling the fires overnight. one fire now on the edge of dollywood where people are being brought to safety. overnight, fierce flames and blinding smoke racing across the tennessee mountains. >> oh, my god. we need to leave. >> reporter: the wildfires engulfing the resort towns of gatlinburg and pigeon forge, home to dolly parton's theme park, dollywood. >> we relocated 19 families that were staying with us in our cabin properties and then

relocated about 50 of our guest room guests here at dollywood's dream world resort. >> reporter: officials ordering everyone to leave calling the fire unpredictable. >> we're dealing with a situation here that is very dynamic. it's changing every moment. >> reporter: dramatic video posted online showing people evacuating. the roads barely visible from the smoke and the flames creeping closer to the road. 15-year-old logan baker inside a gatlinburg hotel stuck because the only road out of town was closed. >> we're on the first floor because they had to break the windows on the upper floors because we were suffocating from the smoke like so bad like we were on the ground suffocating, like we were flat because you had to lay perfectly flat on the ground or the smoke was like just too thick. we had masks, but it was even too thick for the masks. >> reporter: baker says the fire moved faster than anyone expected. >> ten minutes after they told

us that we had time to evacuate, the fires were coming up over the hills, the flames came up into the parking lot. so then they told us we had to all stay inside. >> reporter: the sous chef at that same hotel posting this terrifying video on facebook, flames surrounding the building as smoke fills the room. he later wrote, they're all safe. and we should point out logan told us moments ago that he and his family have been evacuated from that hotel. a bit of relief there and a bit of relief for the firefighters. the first of two storm systems is bringing heavy rain to the area right now. the second system moves in tonight. the other breaking story we're following dozens killed in a plane crash overnight. >> the charter aircraft carrying a brazilian soccer team went down overnight in a mountainous area near the colombian city of medellin. we have a look at the flight radar right now, and you can see the plane circling around several times before crashing. >> new images show the dark crash scene and low visibility. the pilot reported an electrical

failure before the crash. now there is a silver lining. there are survivors. at least five people out of the 81 on board. >> a facebook video showed the team preparing for the flight earlier monday in brazil before they left. they were supposed to play in a final match tomorrow. the mayor of their town says everyone is in tears. fans have been posting many of their support for the team. we're going to continue to stay on top of this breaking news story. >> so sad. this morning, classes resume at ohio state university after a violent attack on campus. a student plowed his car into a group of pedestrians and started slashing people with a butcher knife. he was killed by police. >> investigators are looking into the life of this somali born student who is responsible trying to see if the attack was terrorism. abc's kenneth moton is in columbus. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and adrienne. the crime scene tape is down but the active investigation continues here at ohio state university. local and federal authorities

believe the suspect acted alone but they are working to figure out if his motive was terror related. [ sirens ] >> reporter: confusion and chaos on the campus of ohio state university. >> fire department, this is osu. we have a vehicle that struck several pedestrians. >> reporter: investigators say monday morning a driver jumped a curb and plowed into several people near the school's engineering building. he got out armed with a butcher knife and started slashing. >> don't go to campus. there's an active shooter. >> reporter: a heroic campus cop, 28-year-old alan horujko, two years on the force opened fire killing the suspect. >> and he was yelling and the guy wouldn't stop and the guy charged the cop and the cop was forced to shoot him. >> reporter: there was no active shooter but the terrifying scene and the officer's shots sparked panic. osu students barricaded themselves in classrooms, the university tweeted active shooter, run, hide, fight. >> i ran into a bathroom. luckily it was just a single stall and was able to lock myself in there. >> the attacker identified as

osu student 18-year-old abdul razak ali artan, the school newspaper says this is the photo of the somali immigrant and legal u.s. resident. investigators say on social media he was upset about the treatment of muslims posting on facebook minutes before the attack, i can't take it anymore. >> certainly the authorities need to treat this as a potential terrorist attack. >> reporter: police and the fbi are searching the suspect's home for more clues on his motive, but leaders in the muslim community spoke out urging people not to jump to conclusions and falsely link this tragic incident to the faith of islam. kendis and adrienne. >> kenneth, we've learned a little bit more about the hero cop who killed the attacker. 28-year-old ohio state officer alan horujko was at the right place at the right time. in order to end this threat quickly, he was in the area where the attack took place because of a gas leak. horujko saw the entire incident play out and shot the driver less than a minute after his car jumped the curb. >> certainly could have been much worse for those students there. meantime, donald trump's

transition team is promising a number of important announcements. one of them is expected to be the appointment of georgia congressman tom price to secretary of health and human services. price is a surgeon and vocal critic of obamacare. he believes the law interferes with the ability of patients and doctors to make wise medical decisions. for secretary of state, mr. trump also considering retired general david petraeus. the former cia director was forced to resign for leaking classified information to his mistress. petraeus may also be a contender to lead homeland security. as he left trump tower yesterday, he said the president-elect has a great grasp of the challenges facing the u.s. and the world. and the president-elect also holding a second meeting today with mitt romney, also in the running to lead the state department. members of trump's inner circle including kellyanne conway have publicly voiced opposition to romney because of his recent harsh criticism of mr. trump. a massive rally is planned for today to honor fidel castro,

thousands of cubans continue to pay their respects to the former leader, schools and government offices remain closed. tomorrow castro's ashes will begin a three-day procession across cuba before they are laid to rest on sunday. the white house says president obama will not be attending the funeral. still ahead, some major websites couldn't handle cyber monday, several crashing overnight. and a stunning site for people at an airport. a woman opens the door of a moving passenger plane and jumps out. what police are now saying this morning. plus, the breaking news we've been following in tennessee. a raging wildfire threatening dollywood. images just in of a chapel burning. we'll have the latest.

the strange sight on an australian highway. the driver of that suv you saw there is actually unconscious after a minor collision. two other drivers are trying to rescue him. finally one manages to open a door, get in and stop the vehicle. police aren't sure if the 30-year-old driver had a medical issue before the collision or after. >> wow. the man charged with killing nine people at a historic black church in south carolina is now acting as his own attorney. a judge in charleston agreed to allow dylann roof to be his own counsel. roof dressed in his prison garb, sat at the defense table and participated in jury selection. some family members of those who died now worry that the trial will become a spectacle. also in charleston a white former police officer charged with killing an unarmed black man is set to take the stand in his own defense. michael slager is expected to provide explanation for shooting

walter scott at least seven, no, rather eight times as he ran away. video of that shooting shocked the nation. prosecutors arguing that slager shot in self-defense. workers are expected to walk off the job today at 20 airports including chicago's o'hare airport. they're holding a so-called day of disruption to call for a $15 minimum wage. janitors, security guards and baggage handlers are among the airport workers protesting. despite a weekend full of online deals, cyber monday sales still soared rising more than 10% from last year. but some websites couldn't keep up with the traffic including nordstrom. reports on twitter said websites for banana republic, the gap and old navy also had issues. all of those sites were back up and running within a few minutes so it's good that they bounced back in time to make more of those billions we're expected to tally later on in the week. well, it's about to become safer to post a negative review on sites like yelp and tripadvisor without the backlash. a bipartisan bill protecting the rights of unhappy customers now awaits president obama's

where fires are burning as you can see there on our map. know in the rockies and northern plains will make things slippery. wet roads also in the northwest. if you're flying airport delays are possible along the northeast corridor from boston to washington, as well as in atlanta and new orleans. now to a bizarre incident at houston's airport. a passenger pulled open the emergency exit on a moving plane and jumped onto the tarmac. >> she was quickly captured by police. but it's not the first time that someone has misused those exits. here's abc's david kerley. >> reporter: passengers on this jet were stunned. >> a lady on this flight just opened the door and jumped out of the plane. >> reporter: landing in houston from new orleans but not at the gate yet, the emergency door is gone, as well as a passenger. spotted on video obtained by kprc, she is seen running across the tarmac towards the terminal but authorities quickly realize this is not a threat, but a medical case. >> psychiatric problem, airport response team 92. >> reporter: the woman

hospitalized overnight. but this is not the first time in the past few years we've seen flight attendants who decided to quit by deploying the emergency chutes and bailing out of the aircraft and their jobs. david kerley, abc news, washington. delta air lines has banned for life a passenger who was recorded on a flight shouting his support for donald trump and insulting hillary clinton supporters. the airline will also refund fares of all of the other passengers. delta says it would not have allowed the man on board that flight if they had known how he was behaving. >> some freedom of speech issue there too. texas reporting its first case of homegrown zika virus. health officials say the woman who got sick is a resident of brownsville near the border with mexico. she reported no recent travel to any other country with ongoing zika outbreaks. until now florida was the only state with people sickened by local mosquitoes. a charity thanksgiving dinner may be linked to three deaths and five illnesses in the san francisco bay area.
