in my car just talking, you know, shooting the breeze and just out of nowhere i'm like, oh, my god. i had to swing my door open and i started throwing up. >> reporter: officials say they have 21 confirmed cases of food-borne illness related to the thanksgiving feast. three of those people from two assisted living centers died. >> we have tested for a number of common food-borne illnesses, like e. coli, norovirus and salmonella. so far the samples that we have tested, they did not find any of these. >> they will be sent to the centers for disease control for further testing. golden hills put this statement on their website. "we continue to do what we can to help with the investigation that is ongoing. evidence that once pointed away from the meal that we provided to so many now seems to point back that direction." laura brought home leftovers for his 16-year-old chihuahua mix. >> she's doing better but i almost lost her.

she was so sick, she could barely move. >> reporter: laura anthony, abc 7 news. there's been a shooting on the same east bay freeway for the second day in a row. it happened on westbound 580. the chp shut down the canal on ramp. no one was hit. two people were hurt on a shooting on eastbound 580 in oakland. and traffic is still a mess in san francisco's marina district after a deadly accident closed lombard street for more than four hours today. the crash happened around noon. police say a car was speeding downhill on divisadero street. it ran a red lilt aght and slam into a white prius. one man later died. a woman remains in critical condition. new details tonight in the capture of two escaped santa clara county inmates. authorities caught rogelio

chavez. he tried to hide the tattoo on his face to avoid being recognized. vic lee is live where he was caught. >> reporter: actually, that's the jail where they escaped. they are back again tonight, including the one who narrowly escaped the clutches of the s.w.a.t. team not once but twice. after a 7 1/2 hour standoff, the sheriff s.w.a.t. team arrested rogelio chavez. he had been hiding in an apartment in the south san jose neighborhood. also arrested, karla fernandez, a friend who lives in the unit. she was charged with being an accessory. reports had chavez hiding in the attic. sheriff deputies asked for equipment to crack holes in the ceiling. >> i looked over and it was destroyed. the ceiling is just completely destroyed. >> reporter: this is the aunt of karla fernandez. this is how the apartment looks

like today. the ceiling drywall was gone and installation piled up on the floors of this two-bedroom unit. you could see the extent of the damage. the width of hot incendiary gas fired by s.w.a.t. remained evening this morning. >> there's no attic left. the ceiling has been torn down to apprehend the suspect. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. was apparently taking no chances. chavez has a long rap sheet with violent offenses. martinez said that they searched the home for guns and drugs two weeks ago and came again yesterday morning. >> they said they were here for a yeah who didn't live here, somebody named manuel, said he was associated with somebody who escaped from jail. martinez told us her niece is a recovering drug addict who has been clean and has a job. as for ties to chavez, martinez says she knows nothing about

that. vic lee, nbc 7 news. an investigation is under way into the death of an 8-month-old baby boy in napa. authorities were called to the facility on oxford street about 3:00 on a report of an unconscious and unresponsive child. there are no signs of trauma. paramedics announced the baby dead at the scene. in fremont, take a look at this violent end to a police chase. a man wanted for burglar crashed into an innocent driver with so much force it actually tore the wheel right off their car. eric thomas is live near walnut avenue and guardino drive. police arrested that guy, right? >> tased and arrested a few yards from where i'm standing, the car landed there and you can see the foliage knocked down. if that's all there was to, it wouldn't have been so bad. someone was badly injured in a

collision in that intersection. >> the driver got out and fled on fut and officers captured him down there. >> reporter: this suspect was taken into custody but not before he was sent to the hospital. >> i was curious because i kept seeing more and more coming. i thought it was bigger than a crash. >> reporter: the crash marked the end of a mile-long police chase of a suspect wanted for possibly two burglaries, one last night and one today that was interrupted. >> the resident informed our officers that they had just followed a suspect who had been in his apartment complex burglarizing it when he came home. >> reporter: the suspect crashed into this vehicle which was trying to make a left turn on to walnut avenue. the force of the collision threw pieces of the innocent victim's car dozens of feet away like this wheel and the muffler. it left the car the suspect was driving with major front-end damage.

the car's real owner will soon get the bad news. >> this is a stolen vehicle. it was taken last night during the commission of a residential burglary here in fremont. >> reporter: police say they found what appears to be stolen property in the suspect's vehicle. charges are pending in today's burglary and investigators are looking for more evidence tieing the 21-year-old to last night's burglary. in fremont, eric thomas, abc 7 news. a fremont p.e. teacher faces fel felony charges for having a sexual relationship with a student. police arrested corine audiat. she began the communication with the student earlier this year. they say those conversations grew more inappropriate over time until she allegedly had sex with the student. palo alto police want you to take a close look at a suspect's sketch. a man exposed himself to a woman walking her dog and then drove

off in the car you see on the left. it happened around 11:20 yesterday morning near oregon expressway. the suspect first stopped next to the victim asking for directions. if he looks familiar to you, call palo alto police. san francisco police have arrested the man they say killed a city worker. jermaine jackson is a public works employee who died on the job yesterday morning. melanie woodrow spoke with the suspect's family and talked about his criminal past. >> reporter: outside san francisco's city hall, flags are at half-staff for public works employee jermaine jackson jr. he was painting over graffiti at 25th and vermont streets when he was shot and killed yesterday morning. jackson was a father of two. >> he was a young man and had a lot to live for. >> reporter: the same day jackson was shot and killed, san francisco along with vallejo police arrested another man and booked him for murder.

somebody wrote bark next to a picture. this coyote plays fetch. she comes down here to the road and goes up to car windows in search of food. a lot of humans are interacting with her and people who work closely say it's causing a whole lot more harm than good. she's become a neighborhood icon. the coyote regularly spotted at the park. >> she comes out to play early in the morning. >> reporter: neighbors say she seems friendly and tame. >> people are leaving food for her so she's coming down to cars and walking up to people's cars. >> people are killing the coyote with kindness. >> reporter: janet, who runs several websites about co-existing with coyotes, although intentions are good, this attention is bad for the animal. she took these pictures showing the animal playing fetch, walking along the road and chasing cars. she says people are leaving food on the trails and are even feeding her from car windows.

the u.s. food and drug administration announced today two types of hummus sold at trader joe's are being recalled over a possible listeria contamination. it's the mediterranean hummus and white bean and basil hummus. they have the use by code through and including december 15th. listeria can cause serious and fatal infections in children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. throw out the items or return them to the store immediately. the federal rail authority has shut down a possible holiday train in santa cruz. it runs from the boardwalk and six miles of track needs to be repaired. they expect to have the repairs finished and the train up and running by december 10th.

a popular low-cost airline is ending its flight from santa rosa to phoenix. a spokesman for allegiant air says there was not enough demand to continue the route from the sonoma county airport. the service began only eight months ago. american airlines will offer daily nonstop service starting in february. allegiant will continue to fly from santa rosa to las vegas. on the ground, some of the worst drivers in the country are right here in the bay area. that's according to online insurance comparison website. it found that california is the second worst state to drive in. that's right behind utah. oakland has the distinction of having the worst drivers of the state followed by sacramento and anaheim. they looked at traffic deaths, speeding and dui to come up
