>> now at 11:00, a hitchhiking college student was kidnapped and held hostage. tonight, police say she made a daring escape. good evening and thank you for joining us. >> this terrifying or deal happened this morning at 1245 heller and mclauughlin drive. >> it ended with the college student jumping out of the moving car. katie? >> reporter: this is the intersection where she made that escape. a university spokesman tells me she's doing okay, all things considered. students tell me hitchhiking is common, and they're shocked that this happened. >> she's really lucky. >> reporter: students can't believe what happened to one of their own. they don't bat an eye at the fact that she was hitchhiking. >> i was kind of terrified, because, you know, you put a lot of trust, and i see people hitchhiking all the time. >> a student would be counting

on another student to be in that car, and there's like some camaraderie here. >> reporter: police say the victim was hitchhiking at this bus stop at heller and mclaughlin drive at 12:45 thursday morning. a man picked her up. he was smoking marijuana behind the wheel. when they got to where she wanted to stop, he kept moving. the then jumped from the moving car. >> i give her props, because i would not know what to do. hopping out of the car like that, that was really smart. >> reporter: she suffered minor injuries. there are nighttime shuttles and other safer ways to get around. >> we have a police escort service that can help students during the evening. hitchhiking comes with its own set of dangers and you don't know who you're getting a ride from. >> reporter: the suspect is in his mid 20s, driving a four-door

sedan with a red paper license plate from a dealership. new details involving the teenager accused of sexually assaulting a fellow high school student after a football game. the district attorney's office says tonight their investigation is ongoing and it has not decide wld to press charges against the 15-year-old high school student. the father of the high school student making the accusations told "abc7 news" yesterday his daughter was raped after a football game on november 18th. however, in a new interview today with our media partners at the bay area news group, the father of the 15-year-old boy now accused -- defended his son, calling the act consensual. on the peninsula tonight, police are looking for a man accused of exposing himself to a woman walking her dog. this is a sketch of the suspect. it happened yesterday morning on luis road near oregon expressway.

police say he stopped to ask for directions. the woman managed to take a picture of the man's car, an older model four-door mazda. a man was shot multiple times and rushed to a nearby hospital. police haven't set his condition or if they're looking for suspects. tonight, a driver is dead after a four-car crash on one of san francisco's busiest streets. this was the wreckage that was left behind on lumbard street and now we're learning a stuck accelerator pedal may be to blame. >> reporter: two people are still in the hospital tonight, one with critical injuries following this terrible crash, which shut down this intersection and most of lumbard street, costing one man his life. >> i just heard a really loud bang.

>> reporter: cynthia won't forget the sound of cars colliding at this intersection. >> a lot of people scrambled to the front to the window to see what was going on. >> it was crazy. i didn't really couldn't imagine how many people got hurt. >> reporter: this white prius was hit broadside by a marine ford suv. paramedics tried to save the life of the man in the prius. >> they pried the door off and were giving him cpr for maybe 15 minutes until four ambulances showed up. >> reporter: but the man did not survive. several other drivers were sent to the hospital. police say the driver of the maroon suv was going about 60 miles an hour down the road, possibly due to a stuck accelerator pedal, which caused the suv to run a red light. >> the car coming down just totally turned and knocked the other car about 30 feet, kept going. they were a pretty elderly couple. >> reporter: john says this intersection is dangerous.

>> that is an intersection i've seen maybe three accidents before while i was here. >> reporter: the intersection was closed nor hours, creating traffic gridlock on many side streets. an investigation into the crash is underway. in san francisco, cornell bernard, "abc7 news." for the second straight night, police are investigating a shooting on interstate 580. around 2:30 this afternoon, witnesses say there was a shooting between two vehicles in richmond. the west bound onramp was closed for more than two hoarurs. two people in their 20s remain in the hospital after another shooting on 580 in oakland. police believe this was not a random act. that shooting shut down old east bound 580 for more than an hour and caused a huge, as you can see here, traffic mess. tonight, we are learning more about the second escaped inmate that was caught after -- last night after an hour's long

standoff in san jose. today, the sheriff's office released two new photos. the one on the left of your screen shows the lengths chavez went to do conceal the tattoo on his face. and this is the aftermath inside the san jose apartment where s.w.a.t. teams caught chavez holed up last night. notice the ceiling dry wall is gone and insulation is piled up on the floor. >> it's destroyed. i mean, the ceiling is just completely destroyed. >> the sheriff's office says it is stepping up security after the two inmates escaped last week. county supervisors will vote next week for money to install cameras at the jail. a man is in jail accused of the murder of a public works employee. michael higginbottom was killed. they say he shot and killed a

walker watch program. >> this program is designed to have you guys identify suspicious activity and report it to us. >> reporter: dog walkers are out day and night and can now act as the eyes and ears of the police department. in south san francisco, car break-ins and residential burglaries are the most common crimes. if dog owners are paying attention, they might even catch someone in the act. >> this is a strictly reporting to the police department. we don't want them endangering themselves or anybody else. >> reporter: tonight, they learned what to look for and what to do about it. >> you have to be aware of what's going on, in order to stay safe. and it's kind of -- which is nice to have the people who are out walking their dogs be in this program. >> i know some neighborhoods have had a lot of break-ins, so those -- and i don't want it to happen to ours. so i think i's great. >> reporter: a second and final dog walker watch training class is scheduled for next thursday. in south san francisco, lisa

amin, "abc7 news." tonight, the husband of a kidnapped mother in redding is revealing new details about the moments when his wife was released by two female kidnappers. since sherri patini's kidnappers are still out there, her husband sat down with abc new reporter matt gutman, but only if abc couldn't reveal their location. there he described the details of the ordeal. >> pushed her out of the vehicle, and she has no idea where she's at at this point, and then ran to the freeway. she's screamed so much, she said she was coughing up blood from the screaming, trying to get somebody to stop. >> you can watch the full exclusive interview with keith papini tomorrow night on "20/20." people around the world and here in the bay area are raising awareness and showing support for people with hiv-aids.
