collective. he said about 50 people were inside last night during an event when the fire started. he was treated on the scene for some minor injuries. i tells us he's unsure if one of his friends made it out safely. >> i haven't seen him and there's been flames shooting out of the building for the past 30 minutes. so i hope, i hope he's okay. >> at this point it is unclear if anyone was seriously hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation this morning. san francisco police say there's an important clue that may help them track down the driver in a violent hit-and-run crash. it happened earlier this week right next to san francisco general hospital. sergio quintana has the story.

>> at first glance dana fernie looks like she's recovering from her injuries pretty well, but you take a closer look and she has a bruised eye and a pretty significant head injury. >> i don't remember anything except getting on my bike and then waking up in the hospital. >> tuesday night at about 10:15 she was bicycling home on portera avenue near 22nd street when she was hit by a vehicle. the driver left the scene. her boyfriend says a few good samaritans found her and walked her to the hospital. >> the negative thing is some person did something horrible and selfish but four people did something fantastic. >> unfortunately investigators don't have any clues because no witnesses have come forward and there aren't many surveillance cameras on the stretch. but there is an important piece of evidence. a sideview mirror found at the scene that may have come from the suspect's car. >> we believe the vehicle that struck her is a dark color mini, would be the make. we believe that the model is the cooper. >> dana had been an avid bicyclist.

she's thankful to those who helped her get to the hospital. >> it's very rare nowadays that people stop and help other people and i'm thankful they stopped and helped me. >> this is an ongoing investigation so anyone with information can call san francisco police. sergio win takenna, abc7 news. >> in los angeles investigators believe a fatal stabbing on the university of southern california campus was not the a random attack. a faculty member was killed yesterday. police arrested a student with the murder. paramedics arrived and found professor bosco tjan dead. it was near the psychology building. and in the north bay, firefighters rescued several dogs from a burning home. it was about 7:00 last night. it took firefighters about 90 minutes to get the flames under control. no one was hurt. >> also in the north bay, deputies believe a gunman shot himself in the head while driving away from a crime scene. it all started in kenwood

yesterday afternoon. sky 7 was over this home on adobe canyon road where a man had several gunshot wounds. he's expected to survive. officers followed a black s.u.v. to east santa rosa. the press democrat reports he pulled out a gun and appears to have shot himself into the head. he crashed into this home. investigators have not announced his condition. the police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a young girl on adrian drive. it was be around 3:00 p.m. the girl was walking home when a car stopped and offered her a ride home and she declined. the man ended up getting out, grabbed the girl by the arm, pulled her across the street, hugged her, kissed her and then bit her. the girl was able to break away. the two inmates who made a daring escape from jail were arraigned yesterday. the mug shot after the capture appeared he applied makeup.

both men, plus a woman, charged with hiding chavez, have court dates next week. president-elect donald trump did something that hasn't been done in nearly 40 years. he talked with the president of taiwan. now the chinese government is reacting. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has details. >> china, i promise, will be really, really mad. >> the robert wood is a professor of strategic management and global business at san jose state university. he said by talking to taiwan, president-elect trump is sending a message to china. >> what he is clearly saying is we are going to have a different relationship than we've had through republicans and democrats since 1979. >> that's the year the united states broke diplomatic ties with taiwan. some agree, this is mr. trump setting himself apart. >> china is the second largest economy in the world, the major

security competitor, and making them happy is probably not his priority. >> he said the president of taiwan called me to wish me congratulations on winning the presidency. an east bay congressman is not concerned with who called who. >> november 19th the trump organization was in taiwan trying to close a real estate deal. here we have not only the issue of international diplomacy going on, but you also have that issue of are there conflicts here. >> despite a lack of diplomacy, the u.s. has maintained a security relationship with taiwan. donald trump said in a tweet interesting how the u.s. sells taiwan millions of dollars of military equipment but i should not accept a congratulations call. abc news. hundreds of people were feeling the burn in north bay last night. abc7 news was at the university where a democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders spoke.

reservoirs and aqua firs are filling enough for the city to rise probably half an inch or less. it's measurable using new technology to scan these satellite images of the bay area from the european space agency. >> it's a combination of conservation of water by our residents and our businesses of that allowed our reservoirs to stay fuller. >> city officials don't think anything bad is happening with the rising and falling water table, and they are thankful for people using 45% less water than before the drought but they don't want them acting as if the drought is over. >> it appears we are emerging ou of the drought, but conservation is still a way of life and we are encouraging all of our residents to still conserve. >> meanwhile scientists are still marveling over the new technology that is also being used to track seismic activity in the bay area. it promises to be much more detailed and accurate than ever before. >> in order to be able to analyze this data, you need repeated measurements over a period of time. they are collecting these measurements much more frequently than has been done before. >> and in earthquake territory,

properly because i was in the process of fighting for my own life. >> investigators are still trying to figure out what the shooters did immediately following the shooting. they were later gunned down by police. a man who provided them with assault rifles will face trial next year. take a look at this surveillance video. san francisco police looking for thieves who rushed an apple store, grabbing expensive iphones and ipads not once, but twice. people in hoodies ran in and ripped the devices from the display tables. this is the marina district store on chestnut street. thieves targeted the store on black friday and then again the past tuesday. a similar incident happened at another store. >> and two people were arrested for a pair of belmont burglaries in october and november. officers recovered stolen jewelry and electronics.

investigators say the three may also be responsible for other home burglaries on the peninsula. this woman is arrested for stealing packages from porches. the 24-year-old was arrested at her san jose home. officers were able to track her down after releasing pictures and video to the public showing the theft of the packages. she confessed to the trial. the stars of "full house" are now immortalized in cement. >> one, two, three, go! >> check out the cast members casting their handprints yesterday at the san francisco homemade famous by the '90's tv sitcom. the show's creator is the new owner. but as abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez tells us, not everyone is happy with the arrangements. >> who says the tanners don't live at 1709 broderick street? the creator of the "full house" series is the new owner and he brought part of the cast to

san francisco to kick off the next season of the netflix revival "fuller house." >> there's a connection with fans. they connect with this house. it's become iconic. i understand 500 people a day stop by here. >> it goes without saying that residents here are not feeling the love for the hollywood cast and the creator of the series, jeff franklin, who now owns the home. this is what infuriates neighbors. the double parking while people get out of their cars to take pictures, and the total disregard for the people who live on that street. it's especially bad on weekends. >> it's unpleasant to live here with all of this going on and it's an attractive nuisance. and it's going to get worse because the word is out that he's brought it back. >> a few months ago franklin took a picture of himself sitting on the steps of the house and posted on twitter that he was in the market for a home. that was after the show's revival on netflix. now more tourists than ever drop by.

muni lost about $50,000 in fares when it was hacked last weekend. the hack forced muni to shut down ticket machines and open up the gates for anyone to ride for free. "the chronicle" reported muni did stop the spread of the cyberattack and stop the personal information. they decided not to the pay the hackers after consulting homeland security. we are getting reports that good people are helping san jose mercy mobile get restocked after burglars picked it clean. thieves broke the windows of the rv yesterday, or early yesterday, and helped themselves to warm clothes, utensils, even a hot plate. the mercy mobile distributes donated items for those less fortunate. >> i am upset that someone would violate such a vehicle, but i guess this is a sign of the times we live in. people are desperate and maybe they thought something valuable was in here. what they can't steal is the heart of the people that gave the stuff. >> the mercy mobile visits homeless camps to get a list of what's needed and puts out the

back to our breaking news in oakland. investigators remain on the scene of a three-alarm fire where there are reportedly multiple casualties. it started last night around 11:30 on 31st avenue and international boulevard. one person who was inside tells us the building is home to about 18 people who use it as an artists' collective. they were having an art event last night when the fire started. no word on any serious injuries. thank you to abc7 news viewer, rory, who shared his view of the fire in oakland. if you see news where you live, share it on social media with the #abc7now and you might see it on air or online. oh, my god, drop it! >> a woman's screams followed by gunshots that ended the life of mario woods that happened one year ago yesterday. woods was shot about an hour after he reportedly stabbed a stranger in the arm.

police confronted him, fired beanbag rounds, and then fired gunshots he was shot about 20 times. he had drugs in his system, including meth and marijuana. his death sparked months of protests, but no officers have been charged in the case. abc7's melanie woodrow spoke with woods' mother and the san francisco district attorney to get an update on the case. >> reporter: one year ago mario woods' shooting death by the police was captured on cell phone video. his mother, gwen, said the support she's received that is brought her a sort of calm, but what is missing is justice. >> i don't think any grieving mother should have to beg for some type of justice. i just don't. >> san francisco police shot woods 20 times. he was armed with a knife. police said he had just stabbed someone, that he refused to drop the knife and was acting erratically. >> the knife wasn't a threat to the officers, and in many ways it just started the current reform movement in the city of san francisco.

defending the city against a lawsuit by the family of kate steinle. she is the woman who was killed on pier 14 last year by an undocumented immigrant, juan lopez san schedules. the wrongful death lawsuit said the city is responsible for her death because the sheriff, did not hand him over for deportation. >> san francisco harbor is not a safe harbor for felons. , felons who are undocumented citizens. >> they are trying to use our sanctuary city policy to suggest this wouldn't have happened except for the sanctuary city policy, which is not the case. >> the wrongful death lawsuit also names the bureau of land management. steinle was killed with a blm's agent's gun that was not properly secured inside his car.

the judge will decide if the case can proceed in two weeks. happening today, the san francisco-san is hose police -- is hosting -- the san jose police department is hosting a gun buy-back to help reduce gun violence. they are offering $100 target gift cards for handguns, rifles and shotguns and $200 for assault weapons. they won't collect any personal information. it's all anonymous. the event runs from 9 to 1 today on great oaks parkway in south san jose. >> bart quickly took down posters that grabbed the attention of a lot of riders. yesterday with a bold statement. it said racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination are not allowed and get your -- expletive -- together. bart said the signings were not authorized and they were removed. >> this is not acceptable behavior. >> i think it's a pretty interesting line. i think it's on message. >> bart is working on its own anti-hate campaign.

for now it's not clear who put up those posters. the election is not over for san francisco agency that wants the city to take over maintenance of street trees. this is a letter the executive director, friends of the you are urban forest, sent to supporters yesterday. it warns that mayor ed lee is considering not funding caring for street trees. >> it stops the crazy policy of relinquishing street trees back to adjacent property owners. people who are inheriting a 30-foot tree and don't have the money to take care of it. >> it includes a clause that allows the mayor to suspend funding for tree maintenance if the city faces budget problems. the mayor has until the end of the year to decide. an east bay 14-year-old with a very rare medical condition is about to leave for the mayo clinic. abc7 news has been following kayla's journey, and today you

today's bike-building event runs from 10:00 a.m. until noon. >> also happening today, the holiday train will make its way down to the peninsula. the glittering show train has been a favorite holiday tradition for 14 years. the train is decorated with thousands of lights. this is video from last year's truck. it will visit nine caltrain stations this weekend. people can join in the singing with carolers and santa and mrs. claus will be on board to take pictures with. it kicks off this afternoon at 4:00 at the san francisco caltrain station. >> if you still want a christmas tree and are willing to think outside the planter box, check this out. friends of the open forest renting the live trees for christmas. they aren't pines and may look a little skrawny, like the charlie brown tree, but it's for a good cause.

so from mount cam, nice glassy looking bay and nice colors for the sunrise this morning. yesterday we saw plenty of 60s. everyone was in the 60s. but today a few degrees warmer. in fact up in santa rosa, some of the outlying locations and sonoma and parts of the south bay could see numbers near 70. but average highs notice just in the upper 50s. 57 livermore. forecasting a high of 65 today. that's 8 degrees above average. 9 degrees above average up in san rafael. enjoy it. if you like it mild, today is the mildest day of the week. a beautiful start in san francisco. mild days this weekend. winter-like chill early next week and that's because the coldest air of the season will be heading south from canada, encompassing much of the western third of the nation. a chance of rain hopefully by next friday. as we check out our sky forecast

girls on the run, an after school program that meets twice a week for ten weeks with the ultimate girl of running a 5k. it is a fete that manny adults don't always accomplish. >> i love running so it makes me feel so happy that i can just run. >> this is ruby's second season. she's somewhat of an expert. she will tell you it's not all about running. >> it's like you make new friends and you learn about all this cool stuff. >> the cool stuff, as ruby calls it, is part of the curriculum to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confidence. >> in each lesson there's a certain theme. sometimes it's about inner beauty, sometimes it's about self-confidence. and then they have a game that ties it all together. >> in this lesson the game was a trust circle. there were lots of things. we talked about teamwork and community. and these girls are part of the bigger community. girls on the run is a national program that celebrates their 20th anniversary this year.

it's part of the reason ruby's parents support the program >> she can you run with her friends and meet with her friends and discuss difficult issues with them. i just think it's awesome for them to have this activity together. >> i'm lucky to have met ruby on a certainly level since i'm one of four volunteer coaches at garfield elementary school. there are 2,000 volunteers across the bay area. ruby tells me she's not nervous at all for the season-ending 5k. >> when i started this, i thought 5k would be really long but when it came, i realized it was pretty short because i had fun. >> girls are ready, girls are fun! >> in san francisco, coach jessica, abc7 news. >> thanks, jessica. girls on the run also provides shoes to kids in need. this year they gave away 400 pairs to girls. the 5k they have been training for all season is coming up tomorrow. jessica castro will be the emcee of the event.
