collective. he said about 50 people were inside last night during an event when the fire started. he was treated on the scene for some minor injuries. i tells us he's unsure if one of his friends made it out safely. >> i haven't seen him and there's been flames shooting out of the building for the past 30 minutes. so i hope, i hope he's okay. >> at this point it is unclear if anyone was seriously hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation this morning. san francisco police say there's an important clue that may help them track down the driver in a violent hit-and-run crash. it happened earlier this week right next to san francisco general hospital. sergio quintana has the story.

>> at first glance dana fernie looks like she's recovering from her injuries pretty well, but you take a closer look and she has a bruised eye and a pretty significant head injury. >> i don't remember anything except getting on my bike and then waking up in the hospital. >> tuesday night at about 10:15 she was bicycling home on portera avenue near 22nd street when she was hit by a vehicle. the driver left the scene. her boyfriend says a few good samaritans found her and walked her to the hospital. >> the negative thing is some person did something horrible and selfish but four people did something fantastic. >> unfortunately investigators don't have any clues because no witnesses have come forward and there aren't many surveillance cameras on the stretch. but there is an important piece of evidence. a sideview mirror found at the scene that may have come from the suspect's car. >> we believe the vehicle that struck her is a dark color mini, would be the make. we believe that the model is the cooper. >> dana had been an avid bicyclist.

she's thankful to those who helped her get to the hospital. >> it's very rare nowadays that people stop and help other people and i'm thankful they stopped and helped me. >> this is an ongoing investigation so anyone with information can call san francisco police. sergio win takenna, abc7 news. >> in los angeles investigators believe a fatal stabbing on the university of southern california campus was not the a random attack. a faculty member was killed yesterday. police arrested a student with the murder. paramedics arrived and found professor bosco tjan dead. it was near the psychology building. and in the north bay, firefighters rescued several dogs from a burning home. it was about 7:00 last night. it took firefighters about 90 minutes to get the flames under control. no one was hurt. >> also in the north bay, deputies believe a gunman shot himself in the head while driving away from a crime scene. it all started in kenwood

yesterday afternoon. sky 7 was over this home on adobe canyon road where a man had several gunshot wounds. he's expected to survive. officers followed a black s.u.v. to east santa rosa. the press democrat reports he pulled out a gun and appears to have shot himself into the head. he crashed into this home. investigators have not announced his condition. the police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a young girl on adrian drive. it was be around 3:00 p.m. the girl was walking home when a car stopped and offered her a ride home and she declined. the man ended up getting out, grabbed the girl by the arm, pulled her across the street, hugged her, kissed her and then bit her. the girl was able to break away. the two inmates who made a daring escape from jail were arraigned yesterday. the mug shot after the capture appeared he applied makeup.

back to our breaking news in oakland. investigators remain on the scene of a three-alarm fire where there are reportedly multiple casualties. it started last night around 11:30 on 31st avenue and international boulevard. one person who was inside tells us the building is home to about 18 people who use it as an artists' collective. they were having an art event last night when the fire started. no word on any serious injuries. thank you to abc7 news viewer, rory, who shared his view of the fire in oakland. if you see news where you live, share it on social media with the #abc7now and you might see it on air or online. oh, my god, drop it! >> a woman's screams followed by gunshots that ended the life of mario woods that happened one year ago yesterday. woods was shot about an hour after he reportedly stabbed a stranger in the arm.

police confronted him, fired beanbag rounds, and then fired gunshots he was shot about 20 times. he had drugs in his system, including meth and marijuana. his death sparked months of protests, but no officers have been charged in the case. abc7's melanie woodrow spoke with woods' mother and the san francisco district attorney to get an update on the case. >> reporter: one year ago mario woods' shooting death by the police was captured on cell phone video. his mother, gwen, said the support she's received that is brought her a sort of calm, but what is missing is justice. >> i don't think any grieving mother should have to beg for some type of justice. i just don't. >> san francisco police shot woods 20 times. he was armed with a knife. police said he had just stabbed someone, that he refused to drop the knife and was acting erratically. >> the knife wasn't a threat to the officers, and in many ways it just started the current reform movement in the city of san francisco.

>> reforms that include de escalation training and less lethal force. the incident is still being investigated by the san francisco district attorney's office. no officers have been charged. protesters outside the hall of justice wants george gas con to take action. >> we can't wait any longer. >> we know it's taken time. >> he said once a new unit is in place within his office, the goal by the end of 2017 is for officer-involved is shooting investigations to take between 90 and 180 days to complete. >> anyone looking at that video can say -- see what happened. we need the district attorney to say that. >> woods agrees it's a necessary step toward healing. >> it sends a message that our children's lives, they matter. they matter. >> in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> attorneys for san francisco were in federal court yesterday

defending the city against a lawsuit by the family of kate steinle. she is the woman who was killed on pier 14 last year by an undocumented immigrant, juan lopez san schedules. the wrongful death lawsuit said the city is responsible for her death because the sheriff, did not hand him over for deportation. >> san francisco harbor is not a safe harbor for felons. , felons who are undocumented citizens. >> they are trying to use our sanctuary city policy to suggest this wouldn't have happened except for the sanctuary city policy, which is not the case. >> the wrongful death lawsuit also names the bureau of land management. steinle was killed with a blm's agent's gun that was not properly secured inside his car.

the judge will decide if the case can proceed in two weeks. happening today, the san francisco-san is hose police -- is hosting -- the san jose police department is hosting a gun buy-back to help reduce gun violence. they are offering $100 target gift cards for handguns, rifles and shotguns and $200 for assault weapons. they won't collect any personal information. it's all anonymous. the event runs from 9 to 1 today on great oaks parkway in south san jose. >> bart quickly took down posters that grabbed the attention of a lot of riders. yesterday with a bold statement. it said racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination are not allowed and get your -- expletive -- together. bart said the signings were not authorized and they were removed. >> this is not acceptable behavior. >> i think it's a pretty interesting line. i think it's on message. >> bart is working on its own anti-hate campaign.

so from mount cam, nice glassy looking bay and nice colors for the sunrise this morning. yesterday we saw plenty of 60s. everyone was in the 60s. but today a few degrees warmer. in fact up in santa rosa, some of the outlying locations and sonoma and parts of the south bay could see numbers near 70. but average highs notice just in the upper 50s. 57 livermore. forecasting a high of 65 today. that's 8 degrees above average. 9 degrees above average up in san rafael. enjoy it. if you like it mild, today is the mildest day of the week. a beautiful start in san francisco. mild days this weekend. winter-like chill early next week and that's because the coldest air of the season will be heading south from canada, encompassing much of the western third of the nation. a chance of rain hopefully by next friday. as we check out our sky forecast

girls on the run, an after school program that meets twice a week for ten weeks with the ultimate girl of running a 5k. it is a fete that manny adults don't always accomplish. >> i love running so it makes me feel so happy that i can just run. >> this is ruby's second season. she's somewhat of an expert. she will tell you it's not all about running. >> it's like you make new friends and you learn about all this cool stuff. >> the cool stuff, as ruby calls it, is part of the curriculum to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confidence. >> in each lesson there's a certain theme. sometimes it's about inner beauty, sometimes it's about self-confidence. and then they have a game that ties it all together. >> in this lesson the game was a trust circle. there were lots of things. we talked about teamwork and community. and these girls are part of the bigger community. girls on the run is a national program that celebrates their 20th anniversary this year.

it's part of the reason ruby's parents support the program >> she can you run with her friends and meet with her friends and discuss difficult issues with them. i just think it's awesome for them to have this activity together. >> i'm lucky to have met ruby on a certainly level since i'm one of four volunteer coaches at garfield elementary school. there are 2,000 volunteers across the bay area. ruby tells me she's not nervous at all for the season-ending 5k. >> when i started this, i thought 5k would be really long but when it came, i realized it was pretty short because i had fun. >> girls are ready, girls are fun! >> in san francisco, coach jessica, abc7 news. >> thanks, jessica. girls on the run also provides shoes to kids in need. this year they gave away 400 pairs to girls. the 5k they have been training for all season is coming up tomorrow. jessica castro will be the emcee of the event.
