>> we begin with the latest on the deadly warehouse fire in oakland. at least ten people are now confirmed dead. abc7 news reporter vic lee saw the tenth body being removed from the building late last night. >> dozens are still unaccounted for. officials expect the death toll to rise. crews have been working throughout the night to reach victims and stabilize the buildings. >> if there's any good news involved, the sheriff's office said several people thought to be missing have been found safe. >> the next time we hear from an investigator is at 8:00 this morning. we will take it live here on abc7. >> the fire broke out utah out

around 11:30 friday night at the 31st avenue and international boulevard. good morning. i'm carolyn tyler. >> and i'm reggie akee. >> it's been a grim task for crews trying to recover the bodies. it's happening near 31st 31st avenue and international boulevard in east oakland, close to the bart station. we are joined live from the scene. good morning, amy. >> good morning, carolyn. behind me you can hear and somewhat see that there is still a lot of activity going on. crews still hard at work trying to gather evidence, trying to get in there. but they are protect the by these tents and tarps the sheriff's office has put up. they have set that up out of respect for the victims and their families to keep it out of

sight. they are also using those tents as an area to gather and sort through what they are getting here. there are, though, people who have come to the scene to leave flowers here at the spot to remember those who lost their lives. this building was known as the ghost ship and artist colony and there were several reports people were living here even though it was not permitted for that, it was permitted as a warehouse. neighbors complained about the place and all the debris around it. there was a concert going on when the fire started. when one watched the building burn, he couldn't believe what he didn't see. >> i didn't see many come out at all. just the people that were already outside. that was what really, really bothered me. just not seeing anybody come out and the way that building was burning. it was scary. a scary sight, just thinking

about the people trapped in there. >> recovery crews have filled dump trucks from inside the building as they try to clear everything out so investigators can get in and take a look. they have confirmed that ten people died here, but do expect to find more victims. you will see here behind me live there's a podium set up here and a stand for all the microphones for all the crews who are out here. this is where they will be holding press conferences to brief us and give us any more information and we are expecting our next briefing at 8:00 this morning. live in oakland, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. we will, of course, take that news conference live. sky 7 got a shot showing the patchwork of wooden framing and debris that rescuers have been forced to work through and around. a closer shot shows firefighters inside. a lot of the debris has melted and firefighters said they would actually have to cut bodies from

the wreckage before they could be identified. >> it was no doubt a long and sleepless night for the families still missing relatives. they expect once again they will show up to wait for any information they can get. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo live for us on east 12th street in oakland. reggie, this is where family and friends waited until late last night hoping for answers. but when we got on scene i went inside and talked to sheriff's deputies but once it became known there weren't going to be updates until 8:30 this morning, everyone left. it's empty now. into the night people came and went. a very emotional time. they came from out of the area. some came straight from the airport yesterday. one wouldn't who talked with us and desperate to find her sister-in-law, 35-year-old jennifer. she's from oakland but spends a lot of time in merced. she's married and many close

family members are looking for her. >> please just call us. we are all looking for you, your mom, your dad, everybody, your husband. please, can you just call any of us. if you are around, something happened, we don't care, we just want to know if you are alive or not. >> we understand the sheriff's department did start making notifications to families last night. also, oakland mayor, libby eff was here. she said the 13 people living in the building made it out and are in the hospital. they are doing everything they can to help the families. they are providing travel expenses, hotel rooms, food and certainly counseling, as well. we want to remind people, this office here is open to anyone who feels the need to be here and there is that phone number that families can call for

informaion. area code 510- >> as you mentioned, the missing people are not just from the bay area, they are from all over the state and outside the country. many of their families are fearing the worst. we spoke to a man whose niece is still missing. >> she was a loveable kid. everybody loved her. even we talk about like she will just pop out of nowhere and say hello, guys, i'm here. >> his niece is 20 years old. she's a pager. she lives in oakland. her uncle said it's unlike her to not keep in contact with the family. >> certainly hoping for the best there. we spoke to a woman who said she was inside the so-called ghost ship days before the fire broke out. she described to us what is it looked like before the tragedy.

>> it was pretty junky, and lots of boxy -- like weird boxes with curtains, and like people lived in there, like art space. and there's like a staircase in the middle. just made out of -- no structure, it's like a pile of stuff up to the top floor. >> oakland city council member nolan guyer represents the neighborhood and lives just a block away. guyer was there early yesterday morning watching this emotional scene unfold. >> stood on the corner at 3:00 in the morning crying because i lost some friends. they went to the party because it was posted online. they were in the party. they ran on the stage because of smoke, and they stood there crying because their friends are there. >> part of what made it so difficult is that officials say it was very difficult for people

to get out and difficult for firefighters the to get in and help. >> they called this warehouse a maze. now we are getting a better look inside. the bay area news group posted this floor plan of the warehouse. you can see the first floor is just a large open area. in the corner it's being called a makeshift kitchen. that's near the main entrance. you take a look at the second floor, looks like there's four rooms. from all the pictures we've seen the entire warehouse was full of clutter. the artists would call it art. they were doing everything from woodworking to painting. you can imagine what it was like with dozens and dozens of people inside. officials tell us there was another exit on the second floor but at some point after the fire broke out all the exits or the two exits were blocked. >> we talk to people who say they were artists actually living in the building but the planning department never issued live-in permits.

>> we know the last designated use of the property was as a warehouse. we had received recent complaints about blight and unpermitted construction at the property. we opened an investigation and that investigation is ongoing. >> we have pictures from google earth shown how much debris has grown in the building side yard over the years. first picture back in june, to 13 and the next several were taken over a two and a half year period. by 2015 the empty yard was packed with cars and debris. >> people that were at the party say it was like a tinderbox. obviously there's no much material to burn inside. dan noyes has been looking into this, particularly the man who ran the artist collective inside the warehouse. >> dan has more from the abc7 newsroom. >> fire officials who were briefed on the investigation underway tell abc news this doesn't look like a case of arson but criminal charges are still a possibility. one key person is this man,

derek ian. he rented that warehouse location and started the foundation. he was warned about the fire hazard but he laughed off the warnings. on his facebook page he posted something getting a lot of attention. confirmed, everything i worked for is gob. blessed that my children and micah, his wife, who were hat at a hotel safe and sound, said i am now standing in poverty of self worth. people people blasted him for focusing on his own situation instead of the terrible loss of life. there were frequent parties at the warehouse. flyers promoting them is still on his website, as is a video from this past june. ian should have requested a special permit for last night's event, but he didn't. it clearly wouldn't have been

approved. and for the i-team, abc7 news. >> that was very interesting. a lot of people are stunned by the tragedy and they are turning to social media to chair their feelings with everyone. here's a sample what have we were watching. ed lee tweeting out the oakland fire and the loss of so many young people is heartbreaking. the niners sent thoughts and prayers out to everyone affected bit oakland fire. #bayanita night. and this one, sending prayers for everyone suffering. >> the gray area foundation for the arts has set up a ucaring fund. they have seen lots of support. it now tops $920,000. of the original goal $10,000. donors quickly surpassed that yesterday morning in just about an hour. >> definite lit an outpouring

from throughout the bay area. everyone affected. >> we will get back to the fire in a moment but we want the to take a quick check at the weather. >> good morning. we are looking at a clear start again. numbers have dipped into the 30s in the south bay. 38 in campbell, 39 in sunnyvale. the rest of the bay area clear and cool. we are looking at a little bit of patchy fog for the north bay. 39 in half moon bay. so temperatures are cool. they are going to get even cooler. but we still have a pretty nice day on the way. some sunshine, and with a partly cloudy sky numbers will be above average. so we will talk about the rest of the work week coming up, which includes some rain headed our way. i'll have it in a few minutes. >> thank you. >> still ahead, much more on the tragic fire in oakland. we have a live look at the scene where work is continuing to clear debris and search for missing victims. >> and we will share with you

>> now back to the fire coverage. investigators have been at the scene all night long. they are there now assist through the debris and searching for the two dozen people still missing. >> this is a live look right now. we know that ten people are now dead. this is the recovery effort that you see near 31st avenue and international boulevard. hard to see because of the carps there. but you do see the one movener the background. >> it has been many hours since the last update from the county and city officials. we expect another one to happen at 8:00 a.m. this morning. abc news reporter lauren lister

is live outside the warehouse. lauren. >> good morning. you minutes the the death toll. officials say they expect the number to go up with the dozens still unaccounted for. take a look at the recovery effort. we showed it from one view there from where i stand down the street. all night long we've seen heavy machinery just trying to get through. any aspects of the budding and debris to aid in the recovery efforts. as we know, it is expected to be a long one. >> crews working through the night, trying to recover bodies from the wreckage of this fire. the down efforts but police differing some good news overnight. >> we have been able to put some families' fears at ease by locating loved ones that were believed to be inside here that

were actually found to be alive. >> yet, with dozens unaccounted for, others who believe their loved ones may have been in this place, fearing the worst. >> these were beautiful, inspirational, awesome, intelligent, creative people with great futures ahead of them. >> officials believe victims became trapped on the second floor and the only way out an apparent makeshift stairwell constructed by pallets was quickly overcome with flames. hampered by the debris inside the building. >> this is a devastating scene. this is complicated and it is going to take us time to do the methodical, thorough and professional investigation that these families deserve. >> officials say they see no

evidence of sprinklers inside the warehouse which may have played a huge role in the death toll and the recovery process of bodies from the scene. it is expected to be slow. it will go into monday, at least. live from the scene in oakland, abc7 news. carolyn and reggie. >> thank you. some families are in an unimaginable state of limbo this morning not knowing what happened to their loved ones. they know they were at that warehouse party when the fire broke out. other families are already in mourning. abc news reporter lilian kim spoke with people dealing with the tragedy. >> there's a lot of mourning going on inside the legion their's saloon. some of the people in this bar newsome of the victims and a handful were there at the warehouse when it broke out. 3-d j as witnessed the fire and decided to go on with their show to help other people grieve through the music.

they say the warehouse is a venue they knew had the fire risks but it was a place they liked to perform because it gave them the artistic freedom they were looking for. one lost six friends in the fire and from what he can tell there may be dozens more. he was outside and tried to help but there was nothing anyone could do. the smoke was overwhelming. >> we are djs, but we are also survivors. all three have played there. it's a tribute to our friends that we lost in part and we are also putting space where people can come and talk to other survivors tonight. you know, the music that was played last night was, you know, celebrating the people and their sound as well. >> a portion of the bar sales is

going to the victims and their families. legionnaire's is also collecting donations. in oakland, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> if you want to show your love for the people who have been affected by the oakland fire we have a special badge on our facebook page. go to abc7 news bay area. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning. we have patchy fog in the north bay. but live doppler 7 picking up on the core conditions for the most part. it's cool out there. here's a look from our east bay hills camera. we are looking at numbers ranging from the upper 40s in san francisco. 36 gilroy, 43 san jose. at the coast 41 degrees. and certainly chilly but cooler air to come. napa 37, as well as novato. numbers about freezing by livermore. we look at temperatures to still be on the mild side today but with increasing clouds you

notice the cool down. wet the weather is likely to return on thursday and friday, as well. as we go through the afternoon hour by hour, notice the clouds in the north bay. there's the possibility of even a few sprinkles throughout the afternoon. other than that you will enjoy sunshine and once again temperatures above average. we are highlighting the cooler a days to come. notice the widespread 40s but the darker shade of blue starts to invade the bay area wednesday. that means the coolest day of the week, the morning on wednesday, the afternoon. then by thursday with the increasing clouds we will get a little milder. we have this to hook forward to with the clouds, rain headed our way thursday. it looks to be a rainy afternoon and this carries over right on into friday. so getting back into a wet pattern. that's some good news. highs today underneath partly cloudy skies, 62 in san francisco, 64 san mateo, 60 on the coast, santa cruz.

from chase, so you can. >> we will continue to bring you the latest information on the deadly oakland fire that killed at least ten people. here's a recap what have we know. it started at 11:32 friday night with smoke and flames pouring out, as you can see, from the windows. firefighters were still putting out hotspots at 4:00 a.m. yesterday morning. >> by yesterday morning at 2:00 we learned the building was so badly damaged it was dangerous for firefighters to get inside to look for victims. >> and then by 4:00 p.m. we found out they were cutting holes in the building because the warehouses two entrances were blocked by all the burned debris. >> and abc7 news last night reported vic lee said there was a tenth body removed from the building. crews expect to stay on the scene through today, maybe even into tomorrow searching for

victims. >> there are dozens still missing right now. almeda county set up a family assistance center and opened a hotline for families to call for information. it's no doubt an anxiety-filled night and we are wishing them the best this morning. >> the bay area unites as we offer a moment of silence in honor of the victims, their family members and friends. >> the team held a moment of silence at the oracle arena. head coach steve kerr spoke for the entire team expressing sympathy and hope that perhaps for a few hours the warriors can take people's minds off that tragedy. >> i don't know if it means a whole lot. i should say i know it can't kill the pain, but we're thinking of you and we are all

with you out there and we are all devastated. >> and beyond just thinking about it, the warriors are donating $50,000 to support families affect the bit the fire. the warriors are going to donate their half of the proceeds from last might and tomorrow's game of the 50-50 drawing to the district. >> the a's and raiders are teaming up to help victims and their families. each team is going to match $30,000 from fans make in donations to the ucaring.com page which was first belched by the a's. the raiders will hold a moment of silence before today's game at the oakland coliseum. >> the next half-hour we continue with the heartbreaking fire out of oakland. up next, a look at work being done this morning in the search for victims. >> also the i-team has uncovered more about the warehouse and it's owner.

>> welcome back, everyone. good morning. thank you for joining us, i'm carolyn tyler. >> and i'm reggie akee. crews worked throughout the night trying to recover more bodies from the air house where at least ten people are confirmed dead. the fire started around 11:30 friday night. dozens this morning are still officially missing. family and friends have been looking for those unaccounted for. crews have also had a tough time from the very start because, as we've been telling you, this place was full of debris in and around the building. it was known as the ghost ship. they are expected to search the rest of the day and possibly into tomorrow. and search teams, as i mentioned, had been working throughout the night looking for victims. all taking place at 31st 31st avenue and international boulevard. this is close to the fruitvale

bart station. abc7 news reporter amy was there at this 24 hour operation. amy. >> yeah, reggie. look behind me, you see they are doing their work behind tents shielded with tarps. it looks like they are trying to be respectful to the victims and keep this out of view. we can tell you they are still at work at this hour using what looks like every now and then we can see a backhoe as they try to sort through all of the debris here. outside the police perimeter there's a memorial. people brought flowers to remember those who died here. this was a huge warehouse where artists gathered to do their work and share ideas. some said there were people living here too. it wasn't permitted for residential use. those inside describe it as a place where individual living spaces were section be -- sectioned off with partitions. there there was a lot of fuel for a fire.

>> there were a lot of wooden elements to the space. there were little rooms that were kind of constructed out of antique wood. it was very clear the space was very much constructed of wood. very much kind of, you know, prime for something -- if a tragedy were to happen, there were the elements in place for it to happen. >> here's a look at the dump trucks being used to haul stuff out of here so investigators can get in there and do their work. they confirmed ten people died here and they expect to find more victims. they plan to give a public update very soon this morning. we are expecting a press conference at 8:00 this morning. live in oakland, abc7 news. >> amy, thank you so much. the i-team is uncovering more about the warehouse and an investigation that was already open because of ongoing issues. dan has the story from the abc7 newsroom. >> at the time of the fire the planning and building department had an open investigation into

problems at that warehouse. just three weeks ago a neighbor complained about a ton of garbage piling up on the property but the main building was remodeled for residential. it created heather ishimaru out and a health official took these pictures of deet bring outside the budding and tried to go in but was not able to gain access. he started an investigation into illegal interior structure. at this point we know people were living there, and those familiar with the ghost ship artist collective say people have lived there for years even though it's zoned only as a warehouse. we've been unable to reach the owner. her daughter told the l.a. times multiple people lived there. they said some people worked through the night but that is all. on the ghost ship website you see evidence of people living there, including beds. you also see a collection of art and junk, makeshift railings

from scraps of wood. people who escape the fire report having to climb down an uneven makeshift staircase. wooden pallets inside the house fueled the horrible blaze. dan noyes. abc7 news. >> it has been a painful waiting period for families and friends. the party goers who are still missing. officials had advised them to head to a sheriff's substation on east twelve street if they need to get updates. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo is there live. i imagine many will come back there later this morning? >> carolyn, that's exactly what we expect. i talked with the sheriff's deputies inside this morning. nobody is here right now. but because we do expect the new information, the update at 8:00 this morning, family members could very well be returning ahead of that update. they, as we can only imagine, just desperate for information, for answers. they were here last night, faced only with the running list who have is missing.

and wend the sheriff's office did begin making notifications to families last night. also mayor libby shaft was here. she said the 14 people who actually live inside the ghost ship did get out and were taken to the hospital. but dozens of families still don't know if their loved ones are alive or dead. >> she's not answering her phone, he's not answering his phone. no one can get in contact with them. i tried calling and it's not like her to not respond to a text. >> i'm just more infuriated that i'm not able to help. i want to be there. give me some gloves. i have work shoes. i'm ready. let me find my brother. >> dan, who you just heard from, he's looking for his brother, alex. and alex's girlfriend, mckayla gregory. they have been together four years. they worked together at a mortuary in daly city. her car was found in san bruno.

60 people or more in there. and they were the last two that they know that got out and they were worried about their friends that might be in there. they come from somewhere. they are not from here. they had never been to that building before. they said that the fire started and there was smoke everywhere and they were coming out, it was pitch-black. they told us the only reason they got out, they heard voices and they followed the voices to get out. they were upset. he just said there were a lot of people behind him and he didn't see anybody come out of the building after he left. >> he said it was chaotic. the two were lucky to get out. >> on the scene yesterday morning we saw the technology being used from the firefighters. a drone. it's equipped with a thermal imaging camera. it can find hotspots inside the building and help determine where it's safe to remove debris. almeda county firefighters use a thermal imaging drone that burned a church in september.

>> we wanted to show you what the building look like over the years. first picture was taken by google earth back in june of 2013. the next several pictures were taken over a two and a half year period. you can see the piles are debris and some cars accumulating in the yard to the left of the warehouse. and there's also graffiti that appears on the roof of the warehouse. the last picture was taken about a year ago in october, 2015. >> compare what we just showed you there to this. this is from sky 7 yesterday. to explain how it all worked, the fire caused the roof to collapse that. collapsed on to the second floor. then the second floor collapsed on to the first floor. investigators say the building is unstable. it has made this very dangerous for their crews so they are going methodically throughout the building. >> we saw them trying to shore up the building all last night. for more about the fire recovery, head to our website. we have photos of people

reported missing by their loved ones. we have information about how to help the families of the victims. that's abc7 news.com or the free abc7 news app. >> right now we will take a break from our coverage of the fire to go to lisa argen and look at the weather. lisa. >> good morning, reggie and carolyn. it's certainly chilly out, feeling like december and more cold air is on the way for the week ahead. as we check out live doppler 7, we have fog that's been around the north bay, around petaluma and around santa rosa. a quarter to half-mile visibility. napa down to 2.5 miles. five miles by the coast and the delta. temperatures in the 30s. half moon bay, 37. 36 santa rosa, 34 in livermore with low 40s from mountain view, 60 around fremont. as we go through the next several hours we are going to see the fog give way to a sunny afternoon but increasing clouds in the north bay. it's a chilly start, a crisp midday, and by the afternoon upper 50s to mid-60s.

thomas tells us some college students are officially still missing this morning. >> there are a couple of links to u.c. berkeley and the deadly fire. one involves three people who were at the party who were former journalists for the campus newspaper. and one is vanessa plotkin. her family posted her picture on twitter. she was a freshman. her family has not heard from her yet. also on twitter there's been posted a picture of this man, 25-year-old jason mccarty. he has not been heard from, as well. his picture was posted by a writer to are the daily californian a couple years ago. went to the party with two former colleagues from the daily cal, who all shared stories, not on camera with us, but have taken to social media to share

what happened. one posted and he two friends went to the party, they went inside, hung out for a couple of minutes, saw what was going on. went back outside, went to a liquor store to get beer and when they came back the place was fully engulfed in flames. they were in disbelief and taking the pictures you are seeing now, alongside people who were crying and screaming in disbelief. michael rosen, who was a staff writer at the californian, a sports columnist, shared a first person account in the delay beast. he talked about his place, in his words, was a tinderbox on the inside with clutter and lots of food. he tried to go up to the second floor on a steep board that was very slippery. the only way he could get up there whose was to put his feet into the notches cut into the board or otherwise it was so steep he would have fallen down. it is a very devastating time

hopefully you can stay in touch throughout your busy sunday with what is happening in oakland. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning. patchy fog up in petaluma, santa rosa. otherwise it's the another clear and chili start. right now it shows the clear sky. that will be changing in the north bay later on today with increasing clouds. 49 san francisco, 44 in oakland with 30s at the coast. 36 gilroy, 43 san jose. from the east bay hills camera you see also the bay is pretty glassy, meaning the winds of light. but the dewpoints are low. the air temperature definitely cold out there. 34 in livermore, and fairfield. 36 napa, novato and concord at 38. the coldest temperatures are near sunrise, that's after 7:00. these could drop another degree or too. then we will be on a recovery where we look for more sunshine today except we see high

clouds around later on. that's the change for today. a couple degrees cooler in spots. we will see dry and cold conditions through thursday with wet weather returning likely into thursday and even friday. so statewide you will notice that the increasing clouds in the north bay bringing the numbers down here in the north coast, i should say. southern california still a nice, 71 degrees. hour by hour notice as we start out clear, you notice the high clouds here from santa rosa, clear lake, in through marin. by the afternoon it's still a pretty nice afternoon with filtered sunshine and temperatures above average by just a few degrees. by tuesday we've been talking about the canadian air mass that will not only bring the temperatures down but allow for the frosty overnight lows and the cooler highs. we are still mild today in the 60s. it's tomorrow. numbers dropping into the mid-50s san francisco, 56 redwood city. by tuesday, not only are we still chilly, but we will see increasing clouds that will not only modify our temperatures but also bring in a different air
