>> now from abc7, live breaking news. >> it was quiet. it was heartbreaking. to get through what we were able to accomplish in twelve hours was a phenomenal feat. >> you can see it on her face and her voice. the battalion chief and the most seasoned firefighters with her out there can hardly believe what they are finding in oakland this morning n the last few minutes an update on the number of lives lost. >> and it is staggering. we now know 24 people are confirmed dead, up from ten last night. officials say that number is likely to rise. >> firefighters say they have searched through only one-fifth of that warehouse. they plan to be there for at least a few more days to

complete their search. investigators are working to identify right now those recovered bodies. >> good morning, i'm reggie. >> and i'm carolyn tyler. it has been a grim around-the-clock task for crews trying to recover the bodies. the battalion chief described it as a quiet, respectful search. this is all happening near 31st avenue and international boulevard in oakland. it's very close to the fruitvale bart station. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us live from the scene. this morning, amy. >> hi, carolyn. the sheriff's office announced 24 people have been found dead. we knew the number was going to go up, but you could feel everyone slumped inside when they heard it officially confirmed 24 dead and more expected. we are told the first responders are exhausted. they are very emotional. and they still have a long ways to go. >> at this point we have

approximately 80% left to search. so within twelve hours of our operational briefing we made it through one-fifth of the building. this will be a long and arduous process, but we want to make sure that we are respecting the victims, their families, and our firefighters' safety to work slowly and carefully through the building. they are taking things out bucket by bucket and taking it to an off-site location. they had to move huge rafters that had fallen and they were in the middle of the building. once they got them out of the way they found four victims together and ten feet away six

more. so that's the grim work they are doing in there. the coroner's office has to identify the victims and have only made official notification to three families. one goal important to them is being respectful to the victims' memories. you see the tarps blocking the recovery effort and protecting the dignity of the victims. they are working twelve hour shifts around the clock. they worked all night long. they tell us they will give us another update at 11:00 this morning. reporting live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you so much. up just heard amy say only a few of of the families have been officially notified that they lost someone in this fire. a lot of these other families are still waiting for official word. and hoping that theirs was the person who somehow got out and just hasn't reported back yet. katie marzullo is back at the sheriff's substation on east 12th street. good morning, katie. >> good morning. we've seen a handful of family

members arrive this morning and the looks on their faces speak to the horror of what they are going through. this substation here is a location not only where families can come to get mr. information, but also where they might be notified as the next-of-kin. as we learned in this morning's news conference, the notifications are coming quite slowly. >> we've located 24 deceased victims of the fire. we've only been able to do three official notifications to families. so this is going very slow for us because we have to go back to our coroner's bureau and try to identify these people. >> families did gather here last night as many as 50 were still here after 11:00 p.m. there are counselors here to help them and this morning we've seen the counselors return. there are several inside. members of the red cross, as well. oakland and the city is doing

everything they can for the victims and in some cases providing hotel rooms and food and support. these doors are open. they have been open all night. i've talked extensively with people who are inside, the sheriff deputies and counseleors alike. they are doing everything they can. >> i'm sure the counselors will be needed to the. thank you, katie. the missing are not just from the bay area, they are from across the state and even outside the country. many families are fearing the worst. we spoke to a man whose niece is still missing. >> she was a loveable kid. everybody loved her. her personality, even we talked about she will just pop out of nowhere and say hello, guys, i'm here. but let's go home. >> he tells us his niece is 20 years old. she's a painter and lives in oakland. her uncle said it was unlike her to not keep in contact with her

family. >> there have been a lot of questions about the state of the building that housed the so-called oakland ghost ship. we spoke to a woman who was inside days before the fire broke out. here is what she described. >> it was pretty junky and location of boxy -- like weird boxes and curtains and people lived in there like spaces, i guess, art space. and a staircase in the middle just made out of no art -- no structure whatsoever. just like piled stuff up to the top floor. >> oakland city council member represents that neighborhood. he actually lives just a block away. he was there early yesterday morning watching an emotional scene unfold. >> stood on the corner at 3:00 in the morning crying because i lost some friends. they went to the party because it was posted online.

they were in the party. they ran down the stairs because of smoke and they stood there crying because their friends are gone. >> a lot of people are wondering who was in charge? who is responsible for this? the i-team dan noyes has been looking into the fire, specifically the man who ran the artist corrective inside the warehouse. >> fire officials have been briefed underway tell abc news this doesn't look like a case of arson, but criminal charges are city a possibility. one key person is this man, derek ion. he found the ghost ship artist collective and rented at that warehouse location. people who used to work for them said police and fire warned him about the fire hazard at the building but he laughed off the warnings. we reached out to him but he has not posted back. he said everything i've worked for is gone, blessed that my children and micah, his wife, who were at a hotel safe and

sound. it's like i've awoken from a dream filled with opulence and worth, now in poverty. a lot of people blasted him for focusing on his own situation rather than the loss of life. there are flyers still on the website about parties, one from last june. they said ion should have requested a special permit but he did not. it clearly would not have been approved. so many people crowded into that small space so cluttered with what would have become fuel for that inferno. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc7 news. >> our top priority this morning is covering the fire and we will continue to do so but right now we will take a look at the forecast. >> here's lisa. >> good morning. we are looking at a few high clouds outside. a pretty morning. but you are noticing a couple of changes probably. in fact, with the high clouds from our roof, it will be a slightly cooler day and the breeze will kick up along the shoreline. mountain view, a big improvement

understand the families and the victims, the victims' friends and the crews working on this, they are all having a difficult time process being the news we just learned. >> our team coverage on this tragedy continues with abc news reporter lauren lyster who is live outside the warehouse. good morning. >> lauren, i wanted to ask you -- >> good morning. >> the top priority here is for families to find out the information they have been waiting for for so many hours and for the firefighters to find the victims inside. but it's not as if people weren't warning others that there was a problem in this warehouse in the weeks before. >> no. in fact, looking at social media and hearing a number of statements made by members of the community, whether they are friends of the collective or people who say they have lived there as residents in the past, they say they have been warning about this sort of thing and worrying that the conditions or feared that the conditions would result in something lake we have

seen. some even referring to it as a death trap. or a house of morors. we should point out the owner of the warehouse, family members were quoted saying that they did not believe anybody was living in this warehouse but according to officials and a number of people that we are hearing from, this was a place that some people called home. and that's just one of the safety violations or potential safety violations is what i are a really should say that are surfacing or people are concerned about. something officials were asked about at the press conference a short time ago. you mentioned they kind of said right now they are squarely focused on the victims and their families. but we have different incites into the slew of complaints of that launched against the building from everything from safety to appearance. just three weeks ago one was made about junk piling up, and in addition to that, concerns

about blight, concerns about illegal construction going back as far as ten years back to 2005. and in addition to that, there's the people living there illegally and then the pictures that are posted on the website of this artist collective. you can see the array of art. old carpets along the floor and the walls, old furniture, collections piled up just a staircase made of wood pallets leading to the door and a number of reasons why people have referred to it as a tinderbox. >> thank you, lauren. >> we know also, as you mentioned, about three weeks ago that there were complaints lodged and city officials tell us that they were unable to gain access at that time. so all of this would be investigated in the coming days and weeks. thank you for joining us this morning. some families are in an unimaginable state of limbo this morning. they don't know exactly what happened. >> despite the crowds and music there's a lot of mourning going

on inside the legion their's saloon. some of the people inside knew some of the victims and a handful there were at the warehouse when the flames broke out. 3-d js performing at the legionnaire witnessed the fire and decided to go on with their show in order to help other grief through music. the same type of music that was celebrated at the ghost ship warehouse. they say the warehouse is a venue they knew had its fire risks but it was a place they liked to perform because it gave them the artistic freedom they were looking for. one dj we talked to loft six friends in the fire and from what he could tell from talking to other people, there may be dozens more. he was outside when the fire started and tried to help but there was nothing anyone could do. the smoke was overwhelming. >> we are djs who are going to play here anyway, but we are survivors. all three of us are playing in honor of last -- tribute to our friends we lost, and we are

putting space where people can come and talk to other survivors tonight. you know, the music that was played last night was music -- you know, celebrating the sounds as well. >> a portion of bar sales is going to the victims and their families. the legion their and also collecting donations. abc7 news. >> take a look at this, this facebook page more than underscores the overwhelming outpouring of support because of this fire. a group called rave of remembrance announce add candlelight vigil for the victims tomorrow night at lake merritt. so far more than 980 people have rsvped. that ceremony is schedule today kickoff at 8:00 p.m.. >> if you would like to show your love for oakland and the people who have lost people in the tragedy, we have a special badge on our facebook page. search for abc7 news bay area.

there are people turning to social media to share their feelings and here's a look at some of their messages. the oakland mayor said the loss of so many young people is heartbreaking. and the niners tweeting out thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the oakland fire, #bayareaunite. >> and this one. >> the foundation for the arts has set up a ucaring fund to support those affected by the fire. that's seen incredible support with donations toppin $112,000. we've seen the donations grow throughout the morning. the original goal was just $10,000. but donors quickly surpassed that yesterday morning in about an hour. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good sunday morning to you. watching some high clouds invade the north bay. but it's getting a little warmer

out there. finally out of 309's in most locations. here's live doppler 7. we are looking at a pattern change as we go through the next couple of days. here's a live look from the golden gate bridge. it looks nice and sunny. the temperatures ranging from 50 at the coast, san francisco, mount take view low 40s. and 48 in san jose. another sunny and mild afternoon for most. but a few higher clouds already invading the extreme north bay. 41 in santa rosa. the fog clearing there. 45 novato. mid-40s in concord and livermore. at the beach today once again low 60s return. it's been pretty nice along the shoreline. a little breezier today. partly cloudy and cool to mild today. you could see a passing shower on tuesday. and we will see several impulses bringing that leading edge of cooler air and then the wet weather looks likely to return overnight on wednesday into thursday. so as we go through the next several hours, you can see the high clouds here. sonoma, marin.

overall it should be a nice day and maybe a few sprinkles throughout the later evening hours in sonoma county. we talked about the cooler days ahead. how about tomorrow? we are out of the 60s for most. mid-60s san francisco and half moon bay. as we get into tuesday, below average temperatures tumbling a little more. overnight lows in livermore, the coolest will likely be tuesday morning where temperatures will be in the 30s. hopefully you have covered the plants, most of the vegetation and the animals because it has been chilly. we wake up thursday morning and we have sprinkles by thursday afternoon. it's rain and then it moves on out of here through the overnight hours. maybe a passing shower leftover on friday. so highs today the low 60s in the city. 63 in oakland and if you are headed to the game, go raiders. looking at upper 50s to the mid-50s by the fourth quarter. the accuweather seven-day forecast, a few sprinkles north maybe today. cooler air arrives tomorrow and we chip away a couple degrees. the mornings will be frosty.

>> we're back at 9:25, continuing to bring you updates on the deadly oakland fire that killed at least 124 people. here's a recap of what we know. it started at 11:30 friday night with smoke and flames pouring out from the windows. firefighters were still putting out hotspots at 4:00 a.m. yesterday morning. by yesterday afternoon at 2:00 we learned the budding was so badly damaged it was too dangerous for firefighters to get inside and look for victims. by 4:00 p.m. we found out they were cutting holes in the building because the warehouses two entrances were blocked by burned debris. crews expect to stay on scene for several days to complete their search of the building. there are many more people missing. at this point we don't even know a number. almeda county set up a family assistance center and opened a hotline to call for information. >> the bay area unites as we offer a moment of silence in honor of the victims, their

family members and friends. >> steve kerr spoke and said perhaps for a few hours the warriors could take people's minds off the tragedy. >> i don't know if it means a whole lot. i should say i know it can't kill the pain. but we're thinking of you and we are all with you out there and we are all devastated. >> and beyond just thinking about it, the warriors are donating $50,000 to support families affect the bit the fire. the warriors are going to donate

>> emotions running high during this morning's news conference. the warehouse fire. we've learned some grim new details. good morning, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us. >> i'm reggie. the two number this morning, 24 people were found dead inside the oakland warehouse fire. we've learned from the sheriff's office that number will rise. the fire started around 11:30 friday night. dozens right now are still missing. family and friends have been looking for those unaccounted for. crews have had a tough time from the very start of this because of all the debris in and around the building called the ghost ship. firefighters industry work that's painstaking and painful. search crews are working on twelve-hour shifts. in fact the group that just got off-duty cleared 20% of the budding overnight. what they found to the 31st 31st avenue and international boulevard was overwhelming even for seasoned professionals. amy hollyfield is there right now at this around-the-clock

operation. amy. >> they are saying it is an emotional follow on the first responders. the crew getting off right now they found 14 bodies overnight. they are carrying out buckets of debris. they had to move out heavy rafters that fell. they are describing intense, tough work that's going on. but they say they are doing everything they can to be respectful. >> and i can tell you when i was in there throughout the evening, the somber approach that our firefighters and almeda county sheriff's department members took to the search. it was quiet. it was heartbreaking. >> they have only searched 20% of the building. and that was in a twelve-hour period. that is how slow this process is going. they think they will be here for days. they also think they will find more victims. right now the death toll is at

24. they have only officially notified three families of the 24. the coroner said it is taking a while to identify these victims. first responders are working twelve-hour shifts. they are working around the clock. we are told we are going to get another briefing at 11:00 this morning. live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. i-team's dan noyes is uncovering more about that warehouse. it's 4,000 square feet. he's looking into an investigation that was already open because of ongoing issues. dan has the story from the abc7 newsroom. >> at the time of the fire, the planning and building department had an open investigation into problems at that warehouse. just three weeks ago a neighbor complained about a ton of garbage piling up on the property. but the main building was remodeled for residential. the change caused the neighborhood to look very bad and creates a heather ishimarua. an inspector issued a notice of

violation. took these pictures outside the building and tried to go in but was not able to gain access. he started an investigation. those familiar with the ghost ship artist collective say people have been living there for years even though it's zoned solely as a warehouse. we've been unable to reach the building owner, a 62-year-old woman. her daughter told the l.a. times they thought nobody lived there. they said sometimes some people worked through the night, but that is all. on the interior photographs posted on the ghost ship website, you can see evidence of people living there, including beds. you can also see a collection of art and junk, makeshift railings from scraps of wood. people having to climb down a makeshift staircase. wooden palets inside the house they said fueled the horrible blaze. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc7 news. >> as dan mentioned, there was plenty of evidence people were living there and people told us they were living there.

however, the planning department said they shouldn't have been. >> we know the last designated use of the property was as a warehouse. we had received recent complaints about blight and uncommitted construction at the property. we opened an investigation and that investigation is ongoing. >> sky 7 got this revealing shot from above showing the patchwork of wooden framing and debris rescuers were forced to get through a closer shot shows some firefighters inside that framing. a lot of the debris inside has melted and firefighters said they would actually have to cut bodies from the wreckage before they can be identified. >> as you can imagine, this has been a painful waiting period for family and friends of the party goers who are still missing. as we've been noting, officials this morning said only three families have been notified and officials are asking everyone else to head over to a sheriff's substation on east 12th street for updates. abc7 news reporter katie

marzullo is there. katie, we know counselors are there to help those who are grieving. >> there are. we saw the oakland police department chaplain arrive to join them. and volunteers with the red cross. but the counselors inside, i have seen them and talked to them. they are wearing green vest that say counselor across the back to avoid confusion for people coming here in distress looking for help. family members coming here are doing so under the worst of circumstances. it means they have not made contact with a loved one and it's possible they could be notified as next-of-kin anytime. >> we will begin to release names of the victims. and that's going to be very hard. we want to do that in a respectful manner. we want to make sure that the families are prepared for the names of their loved ones to be public. so in the coming hours we will be releasing victims' names. >> of course, we know now this morning that list of names will be at least 24 people long. and as sergeant kelly said, only

three notify indications have been made so far. he acknowledges that it is a slow process today. we are looking at video right now from yesterday when dozens of families gathered at the sheriff's substation. so many people looking for answers and holding out hope. and while this is a place for families to come for information, it is also where the sheriff's department is asking for information, as well. they tweeted this morning, asking anyone who has since made contact with someone who was previously thought to be missing that they would contact the core nor's office so they can keep the list updated. abc7 news. >> thank you have. one of the people still miss, vanessa plotken. she just started at u.c. berkeley in august. she is from los gatos county. she was been missing since the fire started. another man, jason mccarty, also hasn't been heard from. a writer for the california

daily post said mccarty went to the party with two former colleagues. >> one witness said he saw young people running from the building. he said they were in a daze lacking for their friends. >> they said they were in that party, it was an online party, underground. and there was about 60 people or more in there. they were the last two that they know that got out and they were worried about their friends that might be in there. they are not from here. they had never been to that building before. and they said the fire started and there was smoke everywhere and they were coming out, it was pitch-black. and they told us that they -- the only reason they got out, they heard voices and they followed the voices to get out. and they were upset. he said there were a lot of people behind him and they didn't see anybody come out of the building after they left. >> he said it was quite chaotic and they were lucky to get out. >> we were on the scene when they were using a high-tech

tool. the thermal imaging camera than find where it's safe to search. and they used a drone to find hotspots in a fire that burned a church in berkeley in september. >> we want to show what you the building looked like over the years. the first picture was taken by google earth back in june of 2013. the next several pictures were taken over a two and a half year period. you see the piles of debris and some cars accumulating in the yard to the left of the warehouse. there's also graffiti that appears on the roof of the warehouse. the last picture was taken about a year ago, october, 2015. >> and compare that to what the building looked like yesterday from sky 7. again, the fire here caused the roof to collapse on to the second floor and then that second floor largely collapsed on to the first floor. investigators say the building is unstable. it's been dangerous for their crews and it's part of the reason it's taking so long to recover the victims.

>> the warehouse fire is on course to become the deadliest in oakland history with the follow amount standing at 24 and expected to rise. it is an agonizing time for family and friends of those still missing in this fire. >> abc7 news anchor eric thomas shows us that some college students are still missing this morning. >> there are a couple of links to u.c. berkeley and the deadly fire. one involves three people who were at the party who were former journalists for the dale by with californian, the campus newspaper. another involves three students from here who were thought to have been at the party and are unaccounted for. one is vanessa plotkin. her family posted her picture on twitter. they hope someone will come forward about her whereabouts. she was a freshman. her family has not heard from her yet. also on twitter there's been posted a picture of this man, 25-year-old jason mccarty. he has not been heard from, as well. his picture was posted by a

writer for the daily californian a couple years ago. he went to the party with two former colleagues from the daily cal, who all shared stories, not on camera with us, but have taken to social media to share what happened. one posted he and two friends went to the party, they went inside, hung out for a couple of minutes, saw what was going on. went back outside, went to a liquor store to get beer and when they came back the place was fully engulfed in flames. they were in disbelief and were taking the pictures you are seeing now, alongside people who were crying and screaming in disbelief. once again be, up to three students from u.c. berkeley unaccounted for. from the u.c. berkeley campus,

hearing thomas, abc7 news. >> and michael rosen was another person from u.c. berkeley, a staff writer at the daily cal who just spoke on "good morning america." he described the place as a tinderbox. >> when you walk in, there was a ton of kind of wooden elements to the space. there's literal rooms that were constructed oust of antique wood. it's clear the space was very much constructed of wood. that if a tragedy were to happen, there were the elements in place for it to happen. >> rosen said he and his friends stepped outside just before the fire erupted to go to the store, and when they got back, this is what they saw, that smoke and flames billowing from the building. >> there has been a lot of information come from the news conferences. the next one is at 1 11:00 a.m.

when it happens we will let you know on our news app and do a push alert so you are aware it's happening. from there you can watch it from your phone if you don't happen to be at your tv. we will also have it live and streaming on our website at 11:00 a.m. or when they start the news conference. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning. starting to warm up around the bay. live doppler 7. we overlaid the clouds. you will notice we do have clouds in the north bay. you see a few here from our sfo camera. looking at 51 degrees in oakland, the warmest spot with 50 mountain view. san francisco, half moon bay, and san jose 48 degrees. it's been chilly for everyone the past couple of morning. but colder arizona is on the way. we will add in cloud cover as well. 41 santa rosa and fairfield. mid-40s concord and livermore. no wind out there now but i think at the coast it will become a little breezy today. it will be on the cool side but comfortable for another day here

before things take a more dramatic change. partly cloudy and cool today. could see a passing shower on tuesday. so that will increase the cloud cover, but then wet weather returns late wednesday into thursday and we could see more of that beyond. assessment we look at high temperatures today we see clouds invading the northern half of the state. southern half it's been mild. the rains have dialed back in los angeles but still high surf. a few high clouds. if you go through the morning hours, you will notice from sonoma to marin and possibly a few sprinkles up toward sonoma but not a big deal. and still with mild afternoon highs. we take you to tomorrow. numbers coming down as much as 5 do 7 degrees. mid-to upper 50s. that's a change. and even into tuesday even cooler. so struggling to reach the low 50s in the city. then the overnight lows, of course, will be definitely dramatic cool down. we've had the 30s, but more like mid-and lower 30s for

wednesday morning. increasing clouds on thursday, it looks like it will be a slightly milder start but we will look at some rain arriving on thursday. so in the morning it should be light by the afternoon. it picks up a bit and then by the evening hours we still have some rain. looks like it's going to last into friday. a little too early to tell amounts, but hopefully getting back into a pattern where we can add the rainfall cumulative total so it will be impressive hopefully here and in the sierra nevada. we are looking at temperatures in the low 60s san francisco, 56 palo alto and san jose. with the mild afternoon it should be a nice day in oakland. kickoff 1:05, 55 degrees. fourth quarter we will see temperatures just a little cooler. the accuweather seven-day forecast, look at maybe a sprinkle far to the north and cooler air arrives tomorrow. he's in the mid-and upper 50s. whattic a possible shower on tuesday. we could see a freeze warning or advisory from the national weather service the next couple

>> okay. it's nice to see some 50s in the south bay. checking out numbers in and around sunnyvale, 51. 52 campbell. and looking at milder afternoon for pretty much everyone. right now calistoga, still some 40s. and from pablo. but san francisco today should see highs in the upper 50s. so looking at a mild afternoon for most of you. but as we go through the next several days, we should see highs in the upper 50s. we are above that for today. then by tuesday, wednesday and thursday, it's going to take all day long to make it into the mid-50s. starting off in the 30s. so the coolest morning of the week up in santa rosa should be on tuesday, when numbers will be in and around freezing. and that should be kind of a common thread in other parts of the bay area, as well. not just in our north bay valleys. rain chances. that's what everyone wants to know about. this forecast model looks like we are going to paint a wet
