abc's phillip menna has the story. >> reporter: along the great lakes, the first major snowstorm of the year is reeking havoc for drivers. the mangled mess of up to 70 tractor trailers and cars on interstate 90 just west of erie, pennsylvania. >> watched the guy climb out of his seat. >> reporter: tony pardele right there, as first responders raced to pull victims from the wreckage. roads going from clear to whiteout in an instant bringing wreck along the great lakes from ohio to western new york where snowfall was over 2 inches an hour made it hard to even walk. >> this is a skating rink. just saw two more go in the ditch. >> reporter: on interstate 9 6 east of lansing, michigan, at least three people were killed in this 40-vehicle chain reaction crash that left some of the injured trapped in their cars. this storm's fueled by the arctic blast moving over the great lakes.

could have a few flight delays there. over the south central, there's a chilly start, high pressure in control, but eventually, we'll warm things back up. kendis, eva, back to you. >> thank you, justin. now to john glenn, an american original tributes being paid to the former astronaut and senator who passed away attage 95. glenn was a fighter pilot in world war ii and korea and then became one of nasa's original seven astronauts, becoming a hero in 1962 becoming the first american to orbit the earth. that mission coined the phrase, god speed, john glenn. he coined another phrase he'd use for the rest of his life. >> 0g, and i feel fine, capsule is turning around, and that view is tremendous. and i could see the booster during turn around just a couple yards behind me. it was beautiful. >> after leaving the space program, glenn entered politics serving as senator for ohio for 24 years. then at age 77, he returned to

space as part of a space shuttle mission. another astronaut on that 1998 mission said flying with glenn was like playing basketball with michael jordan or doing astrophysics with albert einstein. funeral details are being arranged. glenn will be buried in arlington national cemetery. >> and as he set off on that last mission, they once again said, god speed john glenn. donald trump is expected to remain as executive producer of "celebrity apprentice" even after he takes office. the show kicks off next month after a two year hiatus. "celebrity apprentice" airs on nbc, but mgm holds a stake in the production, the company that created it. it's not clear how much trump will be paid. his spokeswoman said he'll reveal details next week during a news conference on his business interests. a farewell for harry reid, retiring after 30 years in the senate. politicians from both sides of the aisle paying tribute to the

the way down into florida. kendis, eva, back to you. >> all right, thank you, justin. turning overseas to some mixed messages this morning about the ongoing battle for the city of aleppo, syria. residents and rebels say the fighting in that city has not let up, despite the claims that government syrian forces suspended operations last night. a break in the fighting was intended to allow thousands of residents to leave the city. the pentagon is touting the effectiveness of the u.s. fight against isis. defense officials say the american air campaign and u.s. assistance to forces battling the terror group has led to the deaths of 50,000 isis fighters. a spokesman called that a conservative estimate. the u.s. effort against isis began in 2014. back in this country, we are learning new details from the death penalty trial of self-proclaimed white supremist dylann roof, including the fact that his mother suffered a heart attack in the courtroom during opening arguments.

on day two of that trial, jurors saw a screen grab from a snap chat video showing roof moments before the deadly attack. roof has admitted shooting and killing nine black people in a charleston, south carolina, church basement. this after they invited him into their bible study. roof's lawyers say they're hoping for life in prison instead of the death penalty. the reno, nevada, teenager who was caught on camera swinging a knife at his school terrifying his classmates is in critical condition this morning. a campus officer shot the boy and school officials say he averted what could have been a much more dangerous situation. but others, including the boy's lawyer, are critical saying the officer did have other options. >> this should have been a situation that was obviously subject to control by non-lethal means. you had a very mentally unhinged student attempting to keep people away from him by swinging knives in the air.

>> that lawyer went on to say the boy could lose a lung and suffer brain damage. no charges have been filed so far and school officials are asking the public not to jump to any conclusions until the investigation is completed. the person crammed into the airplane seat next to you may soon be able to spend the flight talking into a smartphone. how obnoxious would that be? federal regulators are considering allowing passengers to place calls during flights using wi-fi. however, the transportation department says there would be two important restrictions. it would be up to the airlines whether to provide the service and the airlines would have to inform passengers in advance if the flight allows calls. >> but i love the photos that they feature there. you have all the smiling, happy people on the flight, and using their phones -- >> rarely that way. >> that's not the case at all. man. let's hope we never get to that point. so we've done plenty of epic fail stories here on this show.

dividing it. >> we are going to be together. we're going to be a strong, strong together nation. you know, i was lucky enough to receive the "time" person of the year, and they talked about head's up a divided nation on the cover. they give me this, and then this stuff. a divided nation. i said, i have not been president. what are you saying that for? you know what, we're going to bring the nation together. >> before headinging to des moines, trump paid a visit to the victims of last week's attack at ohio state university. he met with 150 first responders including the police officer who shot and killed the student accused of driving into pedestrians before stabbing them, injuring 11. the second officer shot in a domestic violence call in georgia has died. officer jodi smith was critically injured in that shooting and underwent surgery, but he did not survive. smith and nicholas smarr, who died the at the scene, were lifelong friends. the two responding to the domestic dispute complaint when a gunman opened fire, taking off, triggering an all-out manhunt. that search ended when they found the suspect inside a home where he was hiding. police say he took his own life. new insight into why the trial of a former south carolina police officer accused of shooting an unarmed black man ended with a hung jury.

jury foreman, dorsey montgomery, the only african-american on the panel, said one of the jurors would not budge on acquitting michael slager. they said it was passionate, emotional, and heated, and said the final vote was 10-2 on conviction. well, a neighboring south carolina is expected to be another grueling day in the courtroom for the death penalty trial of dylann roof, confessing to gunning down nine people in the racially motivated attack. we're learning during opening statements, roof's mother suffered a heart attack in the courtroom. on day two, the jury saw disturbing images from the crime scene so graphic we're not able to show it on tv. abc's steve osunsami covering this trial. >> reporter: jurors got to see what parishioners now say was the evil quietly sitting at their bible study. this screen grab from a snap chat video shows dylann roof to the right, moments before police

say he killed nearly everyone in this room. in court, graphic images from the basement of this historic black church, too disturbing to show here, but looked like this with pools of blood. underneath the tables were dead bodies of parishioners who hid from the gunfire. police put down yellow markers. reverend pinkney was number one. he left behind these beautiful girls. >> i think i ought to give it my absolute best to try to make a difference for the lives for the people i represent. >> reporter: prosecutors say the accused killer hoped to start a race war. roof's lawyers are expecting to loose and hoping to argue against the death penalty, but the pictures seen in court may not help their case. steve osunsami, abc news, charleston. to michigan now and the westbound lanes of interstate 96 in the central part of the state opened once again after a deadly pileup east of lansing. three people were killed and 11

abc's phillip menna has the story. >> reporter: along the great lakes, the first major snowstorm of the year is reeking havoc for drivers. the mangled mess of up to 70 tractor trailers and cars on interstate 90 just west of erie, pennsylvania. >> watched the guy climb out of his seat. >> reporter: tony pardele right there, as first responders raced to pull victims from the wreckage. roads going from clear to whiteout in an instant bringing wreck along the great lakes from ohio to western new york where snowfall was over 2 inches an hour made it hard to even walk. >> this is a skating rink. just saw two more go in the ditch. >> reporter: on interstate 9 6 east of lansing, michigan, at least three people were killed in this 40-vehicle chain reaction crash that left some of the injured trapped in their cars. this storm's fueled by the arctic blast moving over the great lakes. >> look at it spin. >> guys, that's reaching. >> reporter: powerful enough to spawn a water spout over lake erie. that bitter cold air spreading

there. over the south central, there's a chilly start, high pressure in control, but eventually, we'll warm things back up. kendis, eva, back to you. >> thank you, justin. now to john glenn, an american original tributes being paid to the former astronaut and senator who passed away at age 95. glenn was a fighter pilot in world war ii and korea and then became one of nasa's original seven astronauts, becoming a hero in 1962 becoming the first american to orbit the earth. that mission coined the phrase, god speed, john glenn. he coined another phrase he'd use for the rest of his life. >> 0g, and i feel fine, capsule is turning around, and that view is tremendous. and i could see the booster during turn around just a couple yards behind me. it was beautiful. >> after leaving the space program, glenn entered politics serving as senator for ohio for 24 years. then at age 77, he returned to space as part of a space shuttle

mission. another astronaut on that 1998 mission said flying with glenn was like playing basketball with michael jordan or doing astrophysics with albert einstein. funeral details are being arranged. glenn will be buried in arlington national cemetery. >> and as he set off on that last mission, they once again said, god speed john glenn. donald trump is expected to remain as executive producer of "celebrity apprentice" even after he takes office. the show kicks off next month after a two year hiatus. "celebrity apprentice" airs on nbc, but mgm holds a stake in the production, the company that created it. it's not clear how much trump will be paid. his spokeswoman said he'll reveal details next week during a news conference on his business interests. a farewell for harry reid, retiring after 30 years in the senate. politicians from both sides of the aisle paying tribute to the
